  • An alternative to pump and treat groundwater remediation is the use of reactive barriers. Zero valent iron (ZVI) is particularly useful as a reductant of chlorinated hydrocarbons because of its low cost and lack of toxicity ZVI can drive the dechlorination of chlorinated organic compounds and the reduction of chromium from the Cr(Ⅵ) to the Cr(III) state. The contaminants in subsurface environment usually exist as the mixed compounds. Therefore, the objective of this research is to study the effect of the other compounds on TCE removal by ZVI. The removal mechanism of TCE by ZVI is separated the dechlorination and sorption. TCE removal by ZVI slightly increased in presence of naphthalene as the non-reduced compound. TCE removal by ZVI remarkable decreased in presence of carbon tetrachloride, nitrate, and chromate as the reduced compounds. This research suggests that the effect of the coexisted compounds on the removal chlorinated compounds by reactive barrier technology should be considered for practical application.

  • Silybin is the main component of Cardus marianus extracts originated from Silybum marianum and has a hepato-protective effect. It is a water-insoluble compound and poorly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract, resulting in very low oral bioavailability(BA). Polymeric mixed-micelle precursor formulation was made to enhance the dissolution rate of silybin, showing the results of pH-independent release profile with increased dissolution. Oral BA of different preparations in rats was evaluated, revealing that the new formulation showed increased BA more than 2-fold and 4-fold compared to the marketed product and Cardus marianus extracts itself, respectively.

Noise properties of the pyroelectric infrared sensor were investigated with particle size of the raw materials and gain size of the specimens. Particle size were decreased and sintered density, voltage resposivity were increased with increasing the ball-mill times. The specimen ball-milled for a 80[hr] showed a good pop-corn noise properties.

  • The scope of the research is investigation of immune-modulating activities of A. rugosa (Baechohyang) extract was preformed through the screening active constituents using in vitro assays and evaluating anti-inflammatory activity and anti-atherosclerotic activity of the extract and active compound (tilianin) in vivo. In addition, various functional foods using the extract and whole plant was developed. The extract showed strong anti-inflammatory activity in carrageenan-induced acute edema mouse model and anti-atherogenic lesion activity in LDLR (low density lipoprotein receptor) deficient mouse model. These activities were thought to be resulted from modulation activity of several pathways of inflammation process. Among the main constituents of Baechohyang, polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA), Phytosterols, oleanolic acid and rosmarinic acid showed anticomplement activity, and PUFA, acacetin and tilianin newly showed potent ICAM-1 expression inhibition activity. The processes of extraction, mixing ratio of additives and storage conditions were established for drinks, granule tea, leaf tea, mixed tea and furigake.

  • The bacteria which can biodegrade aromatic compounds were screened from soil and wastewater. The isolated Pseudomonas sp. HC107 had high removal rate of COD and phenol. And also this strain grew on m-cresol, salicylate, toluene, 2, 4-D and benzene. When the strain culture (2 ml/day) was treated on continuous reactor at mixed wastewater from chemical, pharmaceutical and dye industry, the treatment rate of COD, BOD and phenol was to be about 92.5%, 95.3% and 93.5%, respectively.

  • pKi values and sensitivity of acid-base indicators in the mixed solvent systems of water-alcohols and water-acetone at differential pH and in concentration media were determined by spectrophotometric method. When the concentration of the organic solvents were increased, the pKi values of sulfophthalein indicators, thymol blue and bromcresol purple, became larger whereas those of an axo indicator, methyl yellow, became smaller nad the pH values of the equivalent points of acids became smaller and the pH values of the equivalent points of acids became higher than those in the aqueous solution. potassium bicarbonate, a standard compound used in the organic solvent systems without a prerequisite procedure of expelling carbon dioxide by boiling.

  • 2,4-Dinitrophenol(DNP) is a metabolic uncoupler that prevents cells from creating energy for growth and it has been suggested that the availability of sodium ions may be important in mitigating the effects of uncouplers. Accordingly, the degradation of DNP was investigated using activated sludge which had been adapted to mineralize DNP. After the acclimation of the activated sludge, the effect of sodium ions on the toxicity of high concentrations(80 to 100mg/L) of DNP was investigated over a sodium ion concentration range of 9.3$\times$10-5 to 94mM. The concentration of sodium ions in the activated sludge mixed liquor seemed to have little effect on the DNP toxicity. However, a lack of sodium in the grwoth media resulted in a reduction of the DNP degradation rate by a bacterial isolate from the activated sludge culture identified as Nocardia asteroides.

  • The objective of this study was to develop bioactive ginseng yogurt, fermented by B. minimum KK-1 and B. cholerium KK-2, which showed transforming activity of ginseng extract to compound K. Among older people, 3% ginseng yogurt fermented by B. minimum KK-1 and mixed with Bifidobacterium KK-1, KK-2 showed the highest overall acceptability(6.80, 6.80) among 1%(3.87, 3.67), 2%(4.40, 4.53) and 3% ginseng yogurt. The pH of ginseng yogurt was lower than that of plain yogurt. During 9 days of storage, the pH of each yogurt slightly decreased and then increased until 15 days of storage. The 3 8.25 log CFU/g and B. cholerium KK-2; 7.78 log CFU/g). Therefore, ginseng might be used as a growth factor during the fermentation of yogurt. The L value of ginseng yogurt decreased, and the a and b values increased, with increasing ginseng concentration.
