  • Canine sarcoptic mite (Sarcoptes scabiei var. canis) is ectoparasite which burrow usually in the stratum corneum of the skin of dogs. Antigens from the burrowing mites induce humoral and cellmediated immune responses in the hosts. The effect of antigenecity induced by somatic antigens of house dust mite (Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus) isolated by continuous elution has been evaluated in canine sarcoptic mites infestation. Continuous elution was carried out in 7.5% SDS-PAGE to isolate proteins of common antigens from somatic antigens of house dust mite. These eluted proteins from somatic antigens of house dust mite were confirmed by Western blotting in 7.5% SDS-PAGE, and eluted proteins (65, 60 kDa) were isolated. To evaluate the antigenetic effect of eluted proteins, eight dogs were divided as 4 groups such as non-vaccinated and non-challenged control (Group I), challenged control (Group II), vaccinated (Group III), and vaccinatedandchallenged (Group IV) groups. Group II and IV were artificially infested canine sarcoptic mites. Group III and IV were immunized with eluted proteins (65, 60 kDa). At the 6th week of the vaccination, the antibody titers of Group of IV were statistically significant higher than those of Group II (p<0.05). And antibody titers of Group III were also statistically significant higher than those of Group I (p<0.05). From these result, it is possible to replace somatic antigens of canine sarcoptic mites with eluted proteins from somatic antigens of house dust mites in order to diagnose and prevent the canine sarcoptic mite infestations.

  • A nationwide survey of chigger mites causing scrub typhus and an investigation of epidemiologic factors for chigger mites was conducted at 16 localities in 8 provinces in Korea during autumn 2009, 2012, and 2013. A total of 233 Apodemus agrarius were captured, and all were infested with chigger mites. The chigger index was highest in Chungcheongbuk-do in 2009 (358.3) and 2012 (290.1) and Chungcheongnam-do in 2013 (294.4). The predominant chigger mite species was Leptotrombidium pallidum in the northern and central parts and L. scutellare in the southern and western parts, Korea. L. pallidum was not found in Jellanam-do and Gyeongsangnam-do and the distribution of L. scutellare had been expanded in the northern parts of Korea. The chigger index of L. pallidum was positively correlated with temperature and negatively correlated with humidity. The incidence of scrub typhus is dependent on L. scutellare index. These findings could be helpful to monitor the distribution of chigger mites and to develop a preventive measures for scrub typhus in Korea.

  • This paper is to illustrate the infestation and related ecological characteristics of chigger mites on the Asian house rat (Rattus tanezumi). A total of 17,221 chigger mites were collected from 2,761 R. tanezumi rats, and then identified as 131 species and 19 genera in 2 families. Leptotrombidium deliense, the most powerful vector of scrub typhus in China, was the first major dominant species on R. tanezumi. All the dominant mite species were of an aggregated distribution among different individuals of R. tanezumi. The species composition and infestations of chiggers on R. tanezumi varied along different geographical regions, habitats and altitudes. The species-abundance distribution of the chigger mite community was successfully fitted and the theoretical curve equation was ${\hat{S}}(R)={37e^{-(0.28R)}}^2$. The total chigger species on R. tanezumi were estimated to be 199 species or 234 species, and this further suggested that R. tanezumi has a great potential to harbor abundant species of chigger mites. The results of the species-plot relationship indicated that the chig-ger mite community on R. tanezumi in Yunnan was an uneven community with very high heterogeneity. Wide geographi-cal regions with large host samples are recommended in the investigations of chigger mites.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the composition of soil microarthropods in pasture at the Unbong Area, to fulfil this purpose, samples were taken from National livestock research institute Namwon branch from 24. June, 1998 to 18. Setember. The results of this study were as follow. Collembola was hight in cattle and goat pasture, and Acarina was hight in wild and gathering pasture. Oribated mites were also hight in wild and gathering pasture more than cattle and goat pasture. Oribatid mites as a vectors of cestodes were identified 7 species of Carabodes peniculatus, Carabodes sp., Scheloribates laevigatus, Scheloribates latipes, Scheloribates rigidisetosus, Galumna cuneata and Galumna sp. The diversity indices showed hight in wild and gathering pasture. According to the MGP analysis I was type GP, and analysis II was type P.

  • Korean fauna mites in the family Parasitidae of Mesostigmata were reported as 6 genera, 22 species. Among those 20 species were recorded from Northern part of Korea by Athias-Henriot (1977; 1980), Daele (1975) and Tichomirov (1977), but two from Southern part of Korea by Choi (1994) and Korean zoological record (KSSZ, 1997). During the faunal study of soil predatory mites of diverse habitats in South Korea, four species of P. beta, P. fimetorum, P. insignis and Poecilochirus carabi are the new records to Korean peninsula. Taxonomic details and other biological characteristics are reported.

  • House dust mites play an important role in the pathogenesis of allergic diseases. Many factors may influence mite growth. The presence of mites is related to mean temperature and humidity as well as altitude. The aim of this study was to analyze the mite fauna in 5 regions of western Anatolia, Turkey, that have similar climatic properties with low mean temperature and humidity, but differ in altitude. During the period October-November 2004, house dust was collected from 290 homes in 5 different cities. House dust mites were isolated in 67 (23.1 %) of 290 samples. The family Pyroglyphidae (Astigmata) was present in all positive samples. This study suggests that the selected western Anatolian regions that share similar environmental conditions host similar dust mite populations.
