  • The purpose of this study was to investigate culinary arts and hospitality students' food safety practice behaviors, intentions, attitudes, and barriers to food safety compliance. This descriptive study used the self-report questionnaire. The convenience sample was composed of 266 college students majoring in culinary arts and hospitality. The students indicated that they never or rarely use a thermometer to determine if meats have been adequately cooked. Examples of positive food handling behaviors were hand washing, sanitation of fruits and vegetables, discarding of food past its expiration date, counter top sanitation, and proper food storage. Students strongly agreed it is their responsibility to practice food safety and to educate their employees about food safety. The primary barrier to proper food safety as ranked by student respondents is the misunderstanding about food labeling. Previous food safety education and internship experience appeared to improve the student respondents' perceived attitudes toward following the principles of food safety practices (p < 0.05), although behaviors and intentions to use the correct food safety practices were not affected. The findings of this study suggest that programs should consider integrating information and experiential learning opportunities in their courses that would be enhance student understanding about food safety. The outcomes of this study can be applied to develop food safety education materials and programs for culinary arts and hospitality students.

  • Spoken dialog tasks incur many errors including speech recognition errors, understanding errors, and even dialog management errors. These errors create a big gap between the user's intention and the system's understanding, which eventually results in a misinterpretation. To fill in the gap, people in human-to-human dialogs try to clarify the major causes of the misunderstanding to selectively correct them. This paper presents a method of clarification techniques to human-to-machine spoken dialog systems. We viewed the clarification dialog as a two-step problem-Belief confirmation and Clarification strategy establishment. To confirm the belief, we organized the clarification process into three systematic phases. In the belief confirmation phase, we consider the overall dialog system's processes including speech recognition, language understanding and semantic slot and value pairs for clarification dialog management. A clarification expert is developed for establishing clarification dialog strategy. In addition, we proposed a new design of plugging clarification dialog module in a given expert based dialog system. The experiment results demonstrate that the error verifiers effectively catch the word and utterance-level semantic errors and the clarification experts actually increase the dialog success rate and the dialog efficiency.

  • This study aims to investigate the changes in the Wedding costume for Paebak(Hyunkugorye) in Westernizing Korean society of the twentieth century. For this study, I analyzed the related literature for the first half of the twentieth century due to the lack of relevant photographs, while I used the method of content analysis of 116 photographs for the second half of the twentieth century. It is obvious that bridegroom and bride wore the same clothes for Hyunkugorye and the formal wedding ceremony in the early twentieth century. According to the analysis of photographs, wonsam was rather more widely used than hwalot as the bride's wedding costume in the late twentieth century. But there were many changes starting from the early 1970s. The changes were deviated from the traditional style and became more decorative and somewhat crude: that is, people began to embroider wonsam and the piping was added to the collar of danryung. All these changes resulted from the pursuit of commercial interests with the misunderstanding of and the indifference to traditional beauty, while Korean society had experienced the Japanese rule of Korea, the Korean War and the industrialization during the 1960s and 1970s. Therefore, to establish appropriate wedding culture and costume in Korea, it is important to educate people who get involved in wedding business for traditional wedding culture and clothes, because nowadays . most of bridegrooms and brides borrow ceremonial costume for Hyunkugorye.

  • In the event of a fire and a disaster, prompt and accurate alarms inside and outside the building are directly related to the minimization of damage and the success of life evacuation. However, due to unwanted fire alarms in automated fire detection systems, the number of dispatches by misunderstanding in the 119 service is increasing. This causes the insensitivity to the safety of building managers and the waste of the fire-fighting power. Therefore, in this study, the statistical databases and literature on unwanted fire alarms in Korea and abroad (USA, UK) were identified and the management systems for unwanted fire alarms were compared and analyzed to identify problems of statistics in the management systems for unwanted fire alarms.

  • This study investigates the effect of misplacement in a written Computer-delivered ESL Placement Test (CEPT) context. The study aims to address the following two research questions: a) which scoring rubric features cause the misplacement of ESL learner's writing scores? and b) which scoring rubric features improve ESL learner's writing scores? Thirty-four international examinees took the test and participated in surveys at the University of Illinois. Twelve examinees of them attended the CEPT workshop test. In the workshop test, they carried out self-evaluation on their first essays using a scoring rubric and compared with expert raters' results. After the workshop, the examinees responded to a survey and interview. For the first research question, the results of the survey and interview addressed that the majority disagreed with the raters' rating results. The self-evaluation results also indicated that their misunderstanding of organization feature caused the misplacement. For the second question, the CEPT workshop scores were improved due to the score improvement in the organization feature while the contribution of other features to the total scores was little. Most of the examinees pointed out that a lesson on the scoring rubric enhanced their understanding of the writing features of the rubric so that their placement scores were generally improved.

  • As the usage of sun tracking system in solar energy utilization facility increases, requirement of more accurate computation of sun position has also been increased. Accordingly, various algorithms to compute the sun position have been proposed in the literature and some of them insist that their algorithms guarantee less than 0.01 degree computational error. However, mostly, the true meaning of accuracy argued in their publication is not clearly explained. In addition to that, they do not clearly state under what condition the accuracy they proposed can be guaranteed. Such ambiguity may induce misunderstanding on the accuracy of the computed sun position and ultimately may make misguided notion on the actual sun tracking system's sun tracking accuracy. This work presents some comments related to the implementation of sun position computational algorithm for the sun tracking system. We first introduce the algorithms proposed in the literature. And then, from sun tracking system user's point of view, we explain the true meaning of accuracy of computed sun position. We also discuss how to select the proper algorithm for the actual implementation. We finally discuss how the input factors used in computation of sun position, like time, position etc, affect the computed sun position accuracy.

  • Basically, diagnosis is a comprehensive judgement of the biochemical data which were collected from the patient directly. Therefore, no matter what kinds of well-managed data control are there, if data sample itself is not perfectly appropriate for any reason. we can not rule out high possibility of misunderstanding or wrong diagnosis. Among many possible reasons inadequate sample were collected maybe three situation and circumstances could be assumed as follows. 1. Client did not know what they are supposed to do for sampling 2. Technicians are to qualified or less-experienced on the job 3. Wrong managing or careless treat of the biochemical data sample If it is true, we could manage these problems to be solved through the information sharing and education. In order to verify this hypothesis, actually 5,800 cases were studied from January to August this year. Owing to the thorough education the rate of unappropriated samples reduced to 0.4% from 1.2%. This outcome strongly support the hypothesis of the mutual relation between the proper sample and well-designed education in advance. The importance of information sharing on right process of sample collection should be emphasized.

  • "Online Alternative Dispute Resolution" can refer to the use of online methods of dispute resolution to resolve disputes arising either online or offline. The range of disputes covered by online ADR has been broad : from family law to internet domain name disputes : from small transaction to insurance disputes. Online and offline consumer disputes have been a major focus of online ADR sites. This article propsed that the mediator should explain the process and the mediator's role so as to forestall misunderstanding on that score. And mediators should consider including in either usual mediation agreements additional provisions applicable to communications by email. Online ADR sites should be designed 1) to provide a simple, easily understandable process, 2) to provide detailed information on process, cost and speed, 3) to enable users to move between online and offline processes, 4) to have authentication processes for parties and documents, 5) to have automatic translation system for language barriers. And Government should play an important role in assisting people to adapt technically and emotionally to new technology through information, training and ongoing support. The days of live online television-quality videoconferencing have not yet arrived. Until then, we must hone our skills with the written word.
