  • This paper presents results on dynamic analysis of the missile initial motion arising from the missile detent force. Using ADAMS (Automatic Dynamic Analysis of Mechanical Syatem) software, a non- linear46-DOF (Degree of Freedom) model is developed for the launcher system including missile and lunch tube contact problem. From the dynamic analysis, it is found that initial angular velocity of the missile incre- ases when the missile detent force increases and also when rocket exhaust plume is taken into account. To achieve the missile launching stability, it needs to reduce the missile initial detent force and exhaust plume area of the lancher. Results of the dynamic analysis on the system natural frequency agree well with those obtained from experimental modal tests. The overall results suggest that the proposed method is a useful tool for prediction of initial missile stability as well as design of the missile launcher system.

  • A Ballistic Missile(BM) is a missile that follows a sub-orbital ballistic flightpath with the objective of delivering one or more wardheads to a predetermined target and An Anti-Ballistic Missile(ABM) is a missile designed to destroy a ballistic missile before reaching its target. The main objective of this study is to assess the requirement of ABM by considering both flight characteristic of the SCUD-B/C, Nodong missiles and intercept performance of ABM in the Lower tier Ballistic Missile Defense(BMD). The Ballistic Missile's flight characteristics, such as trajectory, velocity etc., are estimated by simulation using the physical motion equations. The requirement of ABM is calculated by evaluating whether the BMD forces can defend those when the ballistic missiles attack prime facilities.

  • For a lower tier defense, the distance between a launcher and an engagement control station is quite important to estimate the proper defense area and to effectively arrange missile launchers. In this paper, we have analyzed an effectiveness of anti-ballistic missile launcher arrangement for the lower tier defense against the ballistic missile. The operation concept, specific configuration and aerodynamic characteristics of the ballistic missile such as SCUD-B/C, Nodong are considered in order to develop a realistic engagement simulation. The diverse engagement results through numerical simulations are provided to conduct the effectiveness analysis of anti-ballistic missiles.

  • Dynamic behavior of missile which is fired in canister is analyzed by flexible multibody dynamics. The bending elasticity of missile is very important in case that missile is fired in the inclined launcher. In this paper, the force element model for the missile launching stage and the finite element model of missile are developed. The FEA model of missile is condensed into five lumped mass element model and the consistence between FE model and lumped mass model of missile is verified by modal analysis. As a result of analysis, sabot reaction force and pitch rate of missile for the variation of gap size and force element are obtained.

  • In this paper, we have proposed a methodology which can test and evaluate on system level in development phase of command guided missile system. Test and evaluation play a significant role in the development of weapon system, providing the means for determining to what extent the weapon system satisfies its requirements, whether it functions normally in the operational environment. In case of command guided missile having seeker, the missile communications link provides data to allow the missile to fly an efficient trajectory toward target. Therefore, it is very important to test and evaluate for data link between missile and radar on whole system aspect. we introduce the concept and devices for system level test and evaluation of command guided missile system.

  • This study describes a range sensitivity of a canard controlled missile. An investigation was conducted into the relative importance of aerodynamic parameters on a guided missile. Also this study was analyzed by quantifying their effects on the missile range. To analyze the range sensitivity of a guided missile, a trajectory analysis program of a guided missile was developed. The range sensitivity analysis was conducted on a thrust, weight, drag and lift. The result of the range sensitivity analysis shows that the design parameters with the greatest effect on the missile range are thrust, drag, weight, and lift, in descending order of importance. The thrust on range extension is quite obvious to extend a range of a guided missile. In particular, the drag exhibited greater range sensitivity than lift at a guided flight. The result also shows that missile range could be maximized by applying the appropriate launch angle and canard pitch-up control.

  • This work presents a safety assessment of an underground tunnel subjected to a ballistic missile attack employing the numerical approach. For the impact simulation, a box shaped reinforced concrete (RC) structure with a cross section dimension of 8.0×10.0 m under a soil layer that was attacked by a SCUD missile was modeled using finite element (FE) software LS-DYNA. SCUD missile is one of a series of tactical ballistic missiles developed by Soviet Union during the Cold War, which is adopted for a short-range ballistic missile. The developed FE simulation for the penetration depth of the missile impacting into the soil structure was verified from the well-known formula of the penetration prediction. The soil-structure interaction, the soil type, and the impact missile velocity effects on the penetration depth of the missile into the different soil types were investigated. The safety assessment of the underground tunnel was performed with regard to the different depths of the underground tunnel. For each missile velocity and soil type, a specific depth called the unsafe depth was obtained from the analysis results. The structure beneath the soil beyond this depth remains safe. The unsafe depth was found to be increased with the increasing missile velocity.

  • In this paper, we proposed new solution procedure of the air defense missile allocation problem. In order to find the optimal location of missile, we formulated a simple mathematical model maximizing the kill probability of enemy air threat including aircraft and missile. To find the Kill probability, we developed a new procedure using actual experimental data in the mathematical model. Actual experimental data mean real characteristic factor, which was acquired when the missile had been developed through missile fire experiment. The result of this study can offer practical solution for missile allocation and the methodology in this study can be used to the decision making for the optimal military facility allocation.

  • In this paper, a thrust prediction method for a developing vertical launching missile is proposed through considering a verified vertical launching missile(a baseline missile) as a model. In order to predict thrust profile of a developing vertical launching missile, both Similarity law and Pi theory are applied to the model. By comparing prediction results based on the 6-DOF program of a baseline missile with simulation results of a developing vertical launching missile, the proposed method has been indirectly verified.
