  • A wide field-of-view (FOV) image contains more visual information than a conventional image. This study proposes a new type of hyperbolic mirror for wide FOV image acquisition. The proposed mirror consists of a hyperbolic cylindrical section and a bowl-shaped hyperbolic omnidirectional section. Using an imaging system with this mirror, it is possible to achieve a $213.8^{\circ}$ horizontal and a $126.94^{\circ}$ vertical maximum FOV. Parameters of each section of the mirror are designed to be continuous at the junction of the two parts, and the resultant image is seamless. The image-acquisition model is obtained using ray-tracing optics. To rectify the geometrical distortion of the original image due to the mirror, an image-restoration algorithm based on conformal projection is presented in this study. The performance of the proposed imaging system with the hyperbolic mirror and its image-restoration algorithm are verified by experiments.

  • Aerodynamic characteristics, such as drag and lift, play an important role in automobile design under certain speed conditions. Such characteristics are essential to design an automobile since they are directly related to automobile's performance such as passenger safety and fuel consumption. There is a huge demand for the automobile to have safe performance at high speed. Reduction in drag is also important and it could lead to the solution of air flow induced noise and dust problems. The objective of this research is to find out the aerodynamic differences between conventional side mirror and a modified one using CFD. Although drag generated around a side mirror is only about 7% of the total drag when a car runs, it is very closely related to driver's field of vision and noise generation. CFD simulation of the flowfield around a car side-view mirror was performed using a commercial code; Gambit and FLUENT.

  • In order to satisfy customer's requirements of ride comfort and high performance, it is necessary for designers to fully understand vehicle aerodynamics and wind noise of newly produced cars because characteristics of flow and wind noise are heavily dependent on each other. In this study numerical and experimental study have been carried out to analyse the effect of flow characteristics at around of rear view mirror on wind noise and soiling on the front S/W. As a result, it's found that the spiral flow mear the front pillar is weakened and spreaded because rear view mirror obstructs the flow. It is also shown that there is abrupt change of gradient of separa- tion line, separation area, intensity of spiral flow and turbulent kinetic energy with varying shape of neck and housing of rear view mirror.

  • In this paper, we propose a blind spots elimination system using three cameras. A wide-angle camera is attached on trunk for eliminating blind spots of a rear-view mirror and two cameras are attached on each side-view mirror for eliminating blind spots of vehicle's sides. In order to eliminate blind spots efficiently, we suggest a method to build a panoramic mosaic view with two side images and one wide-angle rear image. First, we obtain an undistorted image from a wide-angle camera of rear-view and calculate the focus-of-contraction (FOC) in undistorted images of rear-view while the car is moving straight forward. Second, we compute a homography among side-view images and an undistorted image of rear-view in flat road scenes. Next, we perform an image registration process after road and background region segmentation. Finally, we generate various views such as a cylinder panorama view, a top view and an information panoramic mosaic view.

  • An unobstructed off-axis two-mirror system is presented in this paper. First a suitable initial configuration is established based on third-order aberration theory. In order to achieve a wide field of view (FOV) with high image quality , the diffractive mirror is adopted in the two-mirror system to increase the optimization freedom and the aberration relationship between diffractive phase coefficients and Zernike coefficients is derived. Furthermore, a complete comparison design example with a focal length of 1200 mm, F-number of 12, and FOV of 40° × 2° is given to verify the aberration correction ability of the diffractive mirror. The system average wavefront error is 0.007 λ (λ=0.6328 μm) developed from 0.061 λ when the system didn’t adopt the diffractive mirror. In this system the phase modulation function of the diffractive mirror is established as an even function of x, so we could obtain a symmetrical imaging quality about the tangential plane, and the symmetric aberration performance also brings considerable convenience to alignment and testing for the system.

  • This paper described an off-axis five-mirror-anastigmatic telescope. It is composed of three aspheric surfaces and one spherical surface while the third mirror and fifth mirror have the same parameters at the same place. This configuration is useful for having wide field of view. The strip full field of view for the near infrared telescope is $20^{\circ}{\times}0.2^{\circ}$. The entrance pupil is located in front of the first mirror. There is an intermediate image between the second mirror and the third mirror. The entrance pupil diameter is 100 mm and the effective focal length is 250 mm. The spectral range is $0.85-1.75{\mu}m$. The pixel pitch is $15{\mu}m$. The image quality is near the diffraction limit. Some methods were used to restrain the stray light such as a field stop near the intermediate image, the baffle, the narrow-band pass filter and a stop in front of the focal plane.

  • In this paper based on geometric optics and geometric modeling aspheric surface of the side mirror mold with dead angle reduced have been designed and machined in a CNC machining center, Surface roughness of the mold was evaluat-ed by usin the surface shaping system. Surface generating simulation of a ball endmill process is investigated. Through the simulation based on the surface-shaping system 3-D engineered surfaces and properties of engineered surfaces are obtained, Computer simulation provides the effective working conditions through the prediction of geometric properties of engineered surfaces. The rear view mirror and room mirror play important role on the safe driving condition as a observation of environment but the rear view mirror can not provide complete information of driving environments due to the existence of the dead angle. The analysis on the shape of formed mirror shows that the proposed me? improves range of a driver's sight.

  • A visual sensor consisted of polygonal mirror, laser, and CCD camera was proposed to measure the distance to the weld joint for recognizing the joint shape. To scan the laser beam of the sensor onto an object, 8-facet polygonal mirror was used as the rotating mirror. By locating the laser and the camera at axi-symmetrical positions around the mirror, the synchronized-scan condition could be satisfied even when the mirror was set to rotate through one direction continuously, which could remove the inertia effect of the conventional oscillating-mirror methods. The mathematical modelling of the proposed sensor with the optical triangulation method made it possible to derive the relation between the position of an image on the camera and the one of a laser light on the object. Through the geometrical simulation of the proposed sensor with the principal of reflection and virtual image, the optical path of a laser light could be predicted. The position and direction of the CCD camera were determined based on the Scheimpflug's condition to fit the focus of any image reflected from an object within the field of view. The results of modelling and simulation revealed that the proposed visual sensor could be used to recognize the weld joint and its vicinity located within the range of the field of view and the resolution. • This paper describes the analysis of flow and aeroacoustic field around a car-like body. The governing equations, 3-D unsteady incompressible Navier-Stokes equations, are solved with the iterative time marching scheme. The Chimera grid technique has been applied to efficiently simulate the flow around the side-view mirror, After the flow field analysis has been converged, the aerodynamic noise analysis of the side-view mirror has been performed by solving Ffowcs Williams and Hawkings equation. From the present numerical simulation, the A- and C-pillar vortex are evidently shown and the aerodynamic noise level induced by the side-view mirror is predicted to about 100dB.
