  • In this paper, we propose a new system which captures real depth and color information from natural scene and implemented it. Based on it, we produced stereo and multiview images for 3-dimensional stereoscopic contents and introduced the production of a digital hologram which is considered to the next-generation image. The system consists of both a camera system for capturing images which correspond to RGB and depth images and softwares (SWs) for various image processings which consist of pre-processing such as rectification and calibration, 3D warping, and computer generated hologram (CGH). The camera system use a vertical rig with two paris of depth and RGB camera and a specially manufactured cold mirror which has the different transmittance according to wavelength for obtaining images with the same view point. The wavelength of our mirror is about 850nm. Each algorithm was implemented using C and C++ and the implemented system can be operated in real-time.

  • Buddhist image engraved on the bronze mirror in the Goryo period were conserved in 1986 and 1996, respectively. As the time passed, re-conservation was required that powdered copper corrosion product on the mirror image occurred. Accordingly, additional conservation including stabilization and consolidation were carried out to prevent further corrosion. The powder filled in the line of the buddhist image and the chasing techniques were examined using microscope and portable X-ray fluorescence analyzer. The result showed that composition of powder were gold, silver and calcium(calcite or gypsum). The main chasing techniques used to engrave pattern seemed to be dotted-line, hairline and the kicking-line engraving.

  • The Joint Bayesian[1] method was published in 2012. Since then, it has been used for binary classification in almost all state-of-the-art face recognition methods. However, no improved methods have been published so far except 2D-JB[2]. In this paper we propose an improved version of the JB method that considers the features of both the given face image and its mirror image. In pattern classification, it is very likely to make a mistake when the value of the decision function is close to the decision boundary or the threshold. By making the value of the decision function far from the decision boundary, the proposed method reduces the errors. The experimental results show that the proposed method outperforms the JB and 2D-JB methods by more than 1% in the challenging LFW DB. Many state-of-the-art methods required tons of training data to improve 1% in the LFW DB, but the proposed method can make it in an easy way.

  • Smart mirror is an IoT device that attaches a display and an embedded computer to the mirror and provides various information to the user along with the mirror function. This paper presents performance evaluation of the CoMirror system as an extension of the previous research in which proposed and implemented the CoMirror system that connects Smart Mirrors using a network. First, the login performance utilizing face recognition was evaluated. As result of the performance evaluation, it was concluded that the 40 face images are most suitable for face learning and only one face image is most suitable for face recognition for login. Second, as a result of evaluating the message transmission time, the average time was 0.5 seconds for text, 0.63 seconds for audio, and 2.9 seconds for images. Third, as a result of measuring a video communication performance, the average setup time for video communication was 1.8 seconds and the average video reception time was 1.9 seconds. Finally, according to the performance evaluation results, we conclude that the CoMirror system has high practicality.

  • After prolonged viewing of a moving pattern, a stationary pattern can appear to move in the opposite direction, a phenomenon known as motion aftereffect (MAE). Unlike the classical explanation MAE was not confined to an adapted region; instead it can spread to an adjacent region, which was not adapted previously. In order to examine the relative locus of the mechanism responsible for MAE spreading, a rotating harmonic spiral pattern was presented as an adapting stimulus within an annulus window, and then the duration of MAE was measured in both the adapted annulus region and the non-adapted inner region. Two different kinds of test patterns were used: the same and mirror images of the original adapting pattern. An interesting characteristic of a harmonic spiral is that the orientation of a contour at a given location is different from thar of its mirror image by 90 degrees, and consequently the adapting effect of local motion detector is not expected to occur in the mirror image. The results showed that MAE duration in an adapted region was longer in the same image condition than in its mirror image condition, while MAE duration in an non-adapted region was not found to be different between those two different image conditions. These results suggest that MAE spreading might be produced by the adaptation of global motion detectors, not by local motion detectors.

  • Physics based fluid animation schemes need large computation cost due to tremendous degree of freedom. Many researchers tried to reduce the cost for solving the large linear system that is involved in grid-based schemes. GPU based algorithms and advanced numerical analysis methods are used to efficiently solve the system. Other groups studied local operation methods such as SPH (Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics) and LBM (Lattice Boltzmann Method) for enhancing the efficiency. Our method investigates this efficiency problem thoroughly, and suggests novel paradigm in fluid animation field. Rather than physics based simulation, we propose a robust boundary handling technique for procedural fluid animation. Our method can be applied to arbitrary shaped objects and potential fields. Since only local operations are involved in our method, parallel computing can be easily implemented.

  • Recently, as the wide spread of smart phone, pico projector which is used at the smart phone is appeared as a portable display device. In this paper, among several pico projectors, laser beam scanner module is dealt with in which laser is used as light source, and mems-mirror is used as optical panel. In this device, screen image quality is a special issue, and blur effect is a typical adverse effect to the quality of this device. So the enhancement of this blur effect has an important factor of the quality of the device. The definition of the blur and the main source of the blur are studied and the simulation results and way of improvement are also suggested.

  • A 43-year-old woman was admitted with the chief complaint of progressive visual disturbance and her brain radiological studies disclosed well demarcated tumor at tuberculum sellae area and bilateral mirror image paraclinoid internal carotid artery saccular aneurysms. A larger left side aneurysm was pointing medialy and almost encased by the tumor. Although a brain tumor and intracranial aneurysm can be simultaneously treated by surgery, the high risk of intra-operative aneurysm rupture should be considered. Therefore, the author secondly performed tumor resection after the endovascular embolization of the aneurysm which was embedding the tumor using a Guglielmi detachable coil. After successful treatment of the patient with tuberculum sellae meningioma associated with bilateral mirror image paraclinoid aneurysms using endovascular and surgical techniques, the authors present the case with a review of the related literatures.

  • A new method for the catadioptric omnidirectional stereo vision with single camera is presented in this paper. The proposed method uses a concave lens with a convex mirror. Since the optical part of the proposed method is simple and commercially available, the resultant omnidirectional stereo system becomes versatile and cost-effective. The closed-form solution for 3D distance computation is presented based on the simple optics including the reflection and the reflection of the convex mirror and the concave lens. The compactness of the system and the simplicity of the image processing make the omnidirectional stereo system appropriate for real-time applications such as autonomous navigation of a mobile robot or the object manipulation. In order to verify the feasibility of the proposed method, an experimental prototype is implemented.

  • We have realized the swept source optical coherence tomography(SS-OCT) by using the self-fabricated wavelength swept laser(wavelength tuning range : 80nm, line-width : 0.12nm, wavelength sweeping rate : 50Hz). In addition, we have used the dual balanced detector that could make a mirror image in OCT display suppressed. We can also fabricate the comb filter of Michelson interferometer type for fast-signal processing in OCT. Using this SS-OCT system for measuring an mirror, a 1mm-depth glass and an onion, we confirmed that the in vivo epidermal cross-sectional images for them can be obtained appropriately.
