  • Unlike wired networks, broadcasting in wireless networks can transmit data to several nodes at a time in a single transmission. The omnidirectional broadcasting of node in wireless networks simultaneously reaches all neighboring nodes. In this paper, we propose a greedy algorithm to solve the minimum power broadcasting problem that minimizes the total transmission power when broadcasting in wireless networks. The proposed algorithm uses a neighborhood list which is a set of nodes that can transmit messages within the maximum transmission range of each node, and among the transmitting nodes that have received the data, the node having the largest number of the neighboring nodes firstly transmits the data to neighboring node. The performance of the proposed algorithm was evaluated by computer simulation, and was compared with existing algorithms in terms of total transmission power and broadcasting frequency for broadcasting to all nodes. Experiment results show that the proposed algorithm outperforms the conventional algorithms.

  • This paper focuses on algorithms based on the evolution, which is applied to various optimization problems. Especially, among these algorithms based on the evolution, we investigate the simple genetic algorithm based on Darwin's evolution, the Lamarckian algorithm based on Lamark's evolution and the Baldwin algorithm based on the Baldwin effect and also Investigate the difference among them in the biological and engineering aspects. Finally, through this comparison, we suggest a new algorithm to find more various solutions changing the genotype or phenotype search space and show the performance of the proposed method. Conclusively, the proposed method showed superior performance to the previous method which was applied to the constrained minimum spanning tree problem and known as the best algorithm.

  • When constructing various mobile networks including sensor networks, the problem of finding the layout or graph to interconnect the terminals or nodes of the network may come up. Providing a common scheme that can be applied to the kind of problems, and formulating the bounds of the run time and the result of the algorithm from the scheme, one may evaluate precisely the plan of constructing analogous network systems. This paper, dealing with EMST(Euclidean Minimum Spanning Tree) that represents such problems, provides the scheme for constructing EMST by parallel processing over distributed environments, and the ground for determining the maximum difference of the layout or the graph produced from the scheme: the difference from EMST. In addition, it provides the upper bound of the run time of the algorithm from the scheme.

  • The various natural disasters such as floods and localized heavy rains are increasing due to the global warming. If a natural disaster can be detected and analyzed in advance and more effectively, it can prevent enormous damage of natural disasters. Recent development in visual sensor technologies has encouraged various studies on monitoring environments including rivers. In this paper, we propose a method to detect water regions from river images which can be exploited for river surveillance systems using video sensor networks. In the proposed method, we first segment a river image finely using the minimum spanning tree algorithm. Then, the seed regions for the river region and the background region are set by using the preliminary information, and each seed region is expanded by merging similar regions to segment the water region from the image. Experimental results show that the proposed method separates the water region from a river image easier and accurately.

  • In WSN(Wireless Sensor Network) many routing algorithms such as LEACH, PEGASIS and PEDEP consisting of sensor nodes with limited energy have been proposed to extend WSN lifetime. Under the assumption of perfect fusion, these algorithms used convergecast that periodically collects sensed data from all sensor nodes to a base station. But because these schemes studied less energy consumption for a convergecast as well as fairly energy consumption altogether, the minimum energy consumption for a convergecast was not focused enough nor how topology influences to energy consumption. This paper deals with routing topology and energy consumption for a single convergecast in the following ways. We chose major WSN topology as MSC(Minimum Spanning Chain)s, MSTs, PEGASIS chains and proposed LECSEN chains. We solved the MSC length by Linear Programming(LP) and propose the LECSEN chain to compete with MST and MSC. As a result of simulation by Monte Carlo method for calculation of the topology length and standard deviation of link length, we learned that LECSEN is competitive with MST in terms of total energy consumption and shows the best with the view of even energy consumption at the sensor nodes. Thus, we concluded LECSEN is a very useful routing topology in WSN.

  • This paper presents a hybrid network model(HY-PIPENET) implementing a minimum cost spanning tree(MCST) network algorithm to be able to determine optimum path and constrained derivative(CD) method to select optimum Pipe diameter. The HY-PIPENET has been validated with the published data of 6-node/7-pipe network. Networking system and also this system has been optimized with MCST-CD method. As a result, it was found that the gas can be sufficiently supplied at the lower pressure with the smaller diameters of pipe compared to the original system in 6-node/7-pipe network. Hence, the construction cost was reduced about $40\%$ in the optimized system. The hybrid networking model has been also applied to a complicated domestic gas pipeline network in metropolitan area, Korea. In this simulation, parametric study was peformed to understand the role of each individual parameter such as source pressure, flow rate, and pipe diameter on the optimized network. From the results of these simulations, we have proposed the optimized network as tree-type structure with optimum pipe diameter and source pressure in metropolitan area, Korea, however, this proposed system does not consider the environmental problems or safety concerns.

  • The home network environment based on the power line communication has some unexpected events. The noise source from the home appliances makes the network impedance increased, and the transmission packets distorted. Therefore the packet transmission from the source node may not be delivered to the destination node directly. In this paper we propose a new self-healing mechanism which relays the packet to the directly unreachable destination automatically with the help of intermediate nodes. In order to choose the minimum required intermediate nodes our mechanism makes a spanning tree with both the directly reachable nodes and indirectly reachable nodes via the intermedia nodes. We developed the network simulator in order to compare its performance to the Echelon's repeater selecting mechanism. Though it required more packet relations than Echelon's but the reachable probability to the destination was highly increased about two times.

  • Cellular formation and layout problem has been known as a NP-hard problem. Because of the algorithm that can be solved exact solution within polynomial time has been unknown yet. This paper suggests a systematic method to be obtain of 2-degree partial directed path from the frequency of consecutive forward order. We apply the modified Kruskal algorithm of minimum spanning tree to be obtain the partial directed path. the proposed reverse constructive algorithm can be solved for this problem with O(mn) time complexity. This algorithm performs same as best known result of heuristic and metaheuristic methods for 4 experimental data.

  • This paper proposes a solution to the problem of finding a subgraph for a given instance of many terminals on a Euclidean plane. The subgraph is a tree, whose nodes represent the chosen terminals from the problem instance, and whose edges are line segments that connect two corresponding terminals. The tree is required to have the maximum number of nodes while the length is limited and is not sufficient to interconnect all the given terminals. The problem is shown to be NP-hard, and therefore a genetic algorithm is designed as an efficient practical approach. The method is suitable to various probable applications in layout optimization in areas such as communication network construction, industrial construction, and a variety of machine and electronics design problems. The proposed heuristic can be used as a general-purpose practical solver to reduce industrial costs by determining feasible interconnections among many types of components over different types of physical planes.

  • Routing schemes that service applications with various delay times, maintaining the long network life time are required in wireless sensor & actor networks. However, it is known that network lifetime and hop count of trees used in routing methods have the tradeoff between them. In this paper, we propose a Pareto Ant Colony Optimization algorithm to find the Pareto tree set such that it optimizes these both tradeoff objectives. As it enables applications which have different delay times to select appropriate routing trees, not only satisfies the requirements of various multiple applications but also guarantees long network lifetime. We show that the Pareto tree set found by proposed algorithm consists of trees that are closer to the Pareto optimal points in terms of hop count and network lifetime than minimum spanning tree which is a representative routing tree.
