Many materials including cementitious concrete-type materials undergo material property changes during high-rate loading. There is a wealth of research regarding this phenomenon for concrete in compression and tension. However, there is minimal knowledge about how mortar material used in concrete masonry unit (CMU) construction behaves in high-rate shear loading. A series of experiments was conducted to examine the bond strength of mortar bonded to CMU units under high-rate shear loading. A novel experimental setup using a shock tube and dynamic ram were used to load specially constructed shear triplets in a double lap shear configuration with no pre-compression. The Finite Element Method was leveraged in conjunction with data from the experimental investigation to establish if the shear bond between concrete masonry units and mortar exhibits any rate dependency. An increase in shear bond strength was observed when loaded at a high strain rate. This data indicates that the CMU-mortar bond exhibits a rate dependent strength change and illustrates the need for further study of the CMU-mortar interface characteristics at high strain rates.

The advancement of autonomous driving technology has heightened the importance of Autonomous Mobile Robotics (AMR) within smart factories. Notably, in tasks involving the transportation of heavy objects, the consideration of weight in route optimization and path planning has become crucial. There is ongoing research on local path planning, such as Dijkstra, A*, and RRT*, focusing on minimizing travel time and distance within smart factory warehouses. Additionally, there are ongoing simultaneous studies on route optimization, including TSP algorithms for various path explorations and on minimizing energy consumption in mobile robotics operations. However, previous studies have often overlooked the weight of the objects being transported, emphasizing only minimal travel time or distance. Therefore, this research proposes route planning that accounts for the maximum payload capacity of mobile robotics and offers load-optimized path planning for multi-destination transportation. Considering the load, a genetic algorithm with the objectives of minimizing both travel time and distance, as well as energy consumption is employed. This approach is expected to enhance the efficiency of mobility within smart factories.
When the contractor does not receive payment for his work due to the client's funding default, he can take various legal measures against the client, in addition to refusing to transfer the building under construction to the client. To claim top payment priority and to demand the equal enforcement of the law by applying for compulsory auction or auction by exercising the right of lien, the contractor should know the construction phase or the point in time when he could exercise a lien or apply for a forced auction of the unregistered building. This study was conducted to examine qualification for lien and auction of an unregistered building. First, the general criteria for qualification for lien from qualification for ownership were examined. This means that an unregistered building can be subject to lien from a certain point in time in the construction phase, where the ownership is qualified as an independent real estate with minimal pillars, roofs, and walls. Second, the contents of the narrow and broad auction qualification were analyzed. As the contractor can select the appropriate legal means to reimburse the construction cost for the unregistered building, the results of this study are expected to provide the bases for qualification for lien on and auction of unregistered buildings.
Lumazine protein is a fluorescent protein isolated from the bioluminescent bacteria of Photobacterium species. To generate minimal size of lumazine protein with possessing fluorescent characteristic, the gene coding for the wild type N-terminal domain of lumazine protein (N-LumP 118) containing amino acids up to 118 from Photobacterium leiognathi was produced. In addition, the genes coding for the variant proteins of N-LumP 118, replaced with one tryptophan amino acid (N-LumP 118 V41W, S48W, T50W, D64W, and A66W), were also constructed by Polymerase Chain Reaction and Site Directed Mutagenesis. These proteins were expressed in Escherichia coli by transformation with recombinant plasmids and purified by 6X-His tagging system. Spectroscopic studies have show that the purified proteins are capable of binding to the fluorescent ligand 6,7-dimethyl-8-ribityllumazine, resulted in showing of fluorescent characteristic with the minimal size of protein. From these studies, the mutant proteins containing single tryptophan amino acid residue, possessing its own intrinsic flouophore character at the different position, will be able to the use as a probe for further studies to deduce their three dimensional structure and the binding modes.

Inorganic iron is essential for various metabolic processes, including RNA synthesis, electron transport, and oxygen detoxification in microorganisms. Many bacterial pathogens compete for iron acquisition in diverse environmental condition such as host. Salmonella Typhimurium SL1344 also requires inorganic iron as a cofactor for growth. When a M9 minimal liquid medium was supplemented with ethylenediamine di-o-hydroxyphenylactic acid (EDDA) which acts as an iron-chelating agent, growth of Salmonella Typhimurium SL1344 in the supplemented medium was completely arrested by deficient of useful iron under iron-depleted condition. However, a number of siderophores, which are small, high-affinity iron chelating compounds secreted by microorganisms such as bacteria and fungi, were produced for utilization of restricted iron under iron-depleted condition. A M9 minimal liquid medium complemented with human transferrin (hTf)-iron complex turned completely off production of siderophores, but growth of Salmonella Typhimurium SL1344 maintained level similar to compare one complemented with iron (III) chloride (FeCl3). This means that human transferrin (hTf)-bound iron can utilize via directly interaction with Salmonella Typhimurium SL1344 without productions of siderophores. Through construction and analysis of negative mutant for utilization of human transferrin (hTf)-bound iron, we confirm that the bacterium can directly use human transferrin (hTf)-bound iron without extracellularly intermediated carriers such as siderophores.
This paper is written to suggest several recommendations for South Korea to deter and defend North Korean nuclear threat, when North Korea does not seem to give up its nuclear weapons and the US's extended deterrence including the nuclear umbrella could remain uncertain. For this purpose, it explains key options regarding nuclear deterrence and defense by non-nuclear weapon state. It evaluates the current status of South Korean non-nuclear preparedness against North Korean nuclear threat and provides some recommendations to improve the preparedness. As a result, this paper concluded that South Korean non-nuclear preparedness against North Korean nuclear threat was not that reliable. The preparedness has weakened since the South Korean effort to denuclearize North Korea through negotiations in 2018. In this sense, South Korea could have serious problems in protecting its people from North Korean nuclear threat if the US promise of extended deterrence is not implemented. South Korea should focus on its decapitation operation to North Korean highest leaders in case of North Korean nuclear attack based on a minimal deterrence concept. It should be prepared to conduct preventive strikes instead of preemptive strikes due to North Korea's development of solid fuel ballistic missiles. It should integrate its Ballistic Missile Defense with that of the US forces in Korea. South Korea should make a sincere effort for nuclear civil defense including construction of nuclear shelters.
Since 1964, HSR, which was opened in Japan, has had a hoge impact on the world. Historically, HSR has similar characteristics to the Roman Road, which promoted rapid movement and hada great influence on international society as transport infrastructure. Recently the development of HSR has become more rapid because of economic, environmental and external cost concern, emphasizing Environmentally Sustainable Transport(EST). In particular, the external cost has become more important factor for justifying HSR. The successful factors of HSR are high demand and cost minimal construction costs. There are two successful HSR models, the Japanese and the French. The former operates based on high demand oriented and the latter focuses on its minimizing costs. The demand orientated model means HSR carries over 100,000 passengers per day as in Japan and Far East Asian countries. The cost minimized model focuses on lower operation and construction costs as in France. In particular, Germany carries both passengers and freight on HSR. The construction costs in Germany are in between those of Japan and France. In future, Korea, Taiwan and China HSR will follow Japan's successful model because of high population density and concentration of economic activity along railway lines. This paper supports Vickerman's argument that HSR is justified where there is a demand of between 12 million and 15 million railway passenger a year(about 40thousand persons/day) between two urban center. This will be shown in the future in Korea, in Taiwan and China. Finally, this paper reviews that HSR activates at 250km/h for dedicated new lines and 200km/h for upgraded lines. In particular, it is successful in area of high population density and cost minimizing technology.

Facility Management (FM) phase in building lifecycle management is the most crucial phase concerning building value and life cycle cost management. Nevertheless, systematic and rational FM process is not yet constructed, leading to failure of facility value and cost management from accurate and proactive FM. This is because there has been minimal approach regarding construction of optimal FM process based on rational FM data analysis. The purpose of this study is to provide optimal FM process with quantitative FM data analysis method using spatial data. This study investigated existing FM data structure and derive the limitation of it from both expert interview and practical FM material analysis. As a solution for this limitation, this study provided optimal FM process with MTBF (Mean Time Between Failure), which is quantitative FM data analysis method. The effect of the provided process was validated with a case study. It is expected that this process allows rational and objective FM data analysis, resulting in accurate and proactive FM. And it is expected that it can be used as a useful basic data for developing an effective system for the FM process.

Due to rapid development of many cities in Korea, many public facilities are required to be built as well as complementary civil structures. Consequently, a number of tunnel constructions are currently carried out throughout the country, and many more tunnels are planned to be constructed in the near future. Tunnel excavation in a city often causes serious damage to above-ground structures and sewer system because of unexpected settlement. In order to prevent the destruction, the tunnel, which bypasses the center of a city, must be specially evaluated for its influence to other structure. In addition, since a slight disturbance of above-ground structure causes numerous public complaints and civil appeals, it must be approached with different method than the mountain tunnels. In this paper, the evaluation method using the Artificial Neural Network (ANN) has been studied. The method begins with an analysis of the minimal sectional area. If its result can be used to approximate the general influence of the whole section, the actual evaluation using ANN will take off. In addition, it also studies the construction management method which reflects the real time soil behavior and environment influence during construction using Geographic Information System (GIS).

In order to identify the change of tidal characteristics on average in the Asan Bay due to the construction of the Hwaong (Namyang Bay) tidal barrier (HTB), the tide data at Pyongtack (PT) and Anheung (AH) for the periods from 1993 to 2006 were analyzed using the harmonic analysis method, and major and shallow water tidal constituents were compared. The semidiurnal tidal amplitudes at PT increased while those at AH decreased after the tidal barrier construction. In particular, the amplitudes at PT increased abruptly during the period of $2002{\sim}2003$ when HTB was completed. On the other hand, the amplitudes of the diurnal tides at PT and AH showed minimal change. This suggests that the tidal characteristics change in the Asan Bay may be related to the construction of HTB. The cause of this change is different from either blocking the tidal wave propagation by the Keum River tidal barrier or removing 'choking effect' by the Yeongsan River tidal barrier. The $M_4/M_2$ ratio increased and their phase difference decreased after the completion of HTB. Accordingly, these changes may result in increase of tidal range, decrease of the flood duration and increase of the flood current velocity, inducing more sediments into the Asan Bay.
