Treatment of central diabetes insipidus with anemia in a dog

  • A 10-year-old, spayed female miniature schnauzer was referred to the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital of Chungnam National University due to evaluation of sudden polyuria (PU) and, polydipsia (PD) (540 mL/kg/day) with severe anemia and weight loss. Blood examination results were normal except for severe anemia (hematocrit, [HCT]: 11.8%). Urinalysis revealed a urine specific gravity (USG) of 1.003, whereas urine sediment was not specific. Urine osmolality was 90 mOsm (reference range: 800~2500 mOsm), and plasma osmolality was 303 mOsm. No specific lesions were found using diagnostic imaging including radiography, ultrasonography and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The serum cortisol level was normal in cosyntropin stimulation test. Plasma arginine vasopressin (AVP) concentration was <0.4 pg/mL (reference range: 3.49~5.45 pg/mL). Blood transfusion was initiated in addition to an oral prescription of desmopressin acetate (DDAVP, 0.1 mg/head) thrice a day for one week. The patient was rechecked for clinical signs, urine osmolality, and USG; the clinical signs of PU/PD were resolved, urine osmolality increased to 1106 mOsm, and, USG increased to 1.021. Considering the improved clinical signs, and increased urine osmolality, and USG after DDAVP treatment, the dog was diagnosed with central diabetes insipidus. USG and urine osmolality increased to >1.030 and 2200 mOsm, respectively. Anemia also gradually improved and HCT increased to >37%. DDAVP was tapered to 0.1 mg/head twice a day and all clinical signs in the patient have completely resolved.

  • 본 연구에서는 손 제스처를 이용하여 탐색 구조용 무인항공기의 카메라 스캐닝 경로를 입력하는 방법을 개발하여 가상현실 환경에서 시험하였다. 두 개의 임무영역 - 화재 발생 빌딩과 산악지역-에서 인명구조 탐색을 위해 관심 지역 빌딩과 산악 영역의 축소형 디지털트윈을 각각의 관심 지역 앞에 생성하고 디지털트윈 표면 상에 손 제스처로 비행경로를 정의한 후 무인항공기의 자동비행이 이루어지도록 하였다. 19명의 실험참가자로 이루어진 Human-in-the-loop 시뮬레이션 테스트에서 기존의 매뉴얼 비행 방식과 이 연구에서 설계한 경로 정의 후 자동비행 방식을 비교하였다. 테스트 결과, 객관적 결과는 새로운 방식이 임무의 정확성을 전반적으로 더 높였다고 보기는 어려웠으나, 주관적 답변은 산악지역 임무시 더 낮은 작업부하를 도출한다는 것을 보여주었다. 이러한 전문가의 특수한 업무능력에 의존하는 탐색구조 분야에서는 업무부하 감소가 필요한 부분에 선택적으로 적용하여 자동화로 보완해주는 것이 필요하다.

고결모래의 콘선단저항과 변형계수의 관계 (Relation between Cone Tip Resistance and Deformation Modulus of Cemented Sand)

  • 본 연구에서는 대형 챔버시험을 통해 결정된 고결모래의 콘선단저항과 고결모래의 횡방향구속 변형계수, 일축압축 강도, 전단강도와의 관계를 검토하였다. 시험결과 모래의 상대밀도나 연직구속압 뿐만 아니라 고결효과가 커질수록 콘선단저항과 횡방향구속 변형계수가 증가하였다. 모래의 횡방향구속 변형계수는 상대밀도나 연직구속압보다 고결의 영향이 더 크게 작용하며, 반면 콘선단저항은 변형계수보다 상대밀도나 연직구속압의 영향이 더 크게 나타났다. 고결결합 미파괴 상태로 간주될 수 있는 일축압축강도, 전단강도, 횡방향구속 변형계수와는 달리 콘선단저항은 고결결합을 파괴하며 측정되기 때문에, 고결모래의 변형계수를 $70{\sim}85%$ 정도 과소평가하였다. 또한 본 연구에서는 회귀분석을 통해 고결모래의 콘선단저항과 전단강도의 관계, 콘선단저항과 일축압축강도의 관계, 그리고 횡방향구속 변형계수와 콘선단저항, 일축압축강도의 관계가 표현되었다.

원심모형시험에 의한 준설지반의 압밀특성연구 (A Study on Consolidation Characteristic of Dredged Fill Using Geotechnical Centrifuge)

  • 현장실험의 경우 규모에 따라 시간이나 비용 등의 측면에서 많은 제약과 어려움이 따르지만, 실내모형실험은 현장 실험에 비해 매개변수에 따라 다양한 실험을 실시할 수 있다. 본 연구에서는 축소된 모형을 사용하여 경제적으로 현장 원형구조물의 지반공학적 거동을 재현하기 위하여 인위적으로 원심력을 가하여 현장의 응력상태를 재현시킬 수 있는 원심모형실험기법을 실시하여 준설지반의 압밀거동을 예측하고 분석하는데 이용하였다. 자중압밀단계의 간극비-유효응력-투수계수의 관계를 유추하기 위하여 저응력 침투압밀 시험을 실시한 결과를 Curve fitting 결과 누승함수 형태의 구성관계를 얻을 수 있었다. 구성관계식을 이용하여 대표단면을 프로그램으로 수치해석 한 결과 최종침하량은 원심모형 실험에 의한 자중압밀 실험결과와 유사한 경향의 결과를 보이고 있었으나 원심모형실험 결과보다 다소 작게 산정되었다.

Evaluation of porcine intestinal organoids as an in vitro model for mammalian orthoreovirus 3 infection

  • Background: Mammalian orthoreovirus type 3 (MRV3), which is responsible for gastroenteritis in many mammalian species including pigs, has been isolated from piglets with severe diarrhea. However, the use of pig-derived cells as an infection model for swine-MRV3 has rarely been studied. Objectives: This study aims to establish porcine intestinal organoids (PIOs) and examine their susceptibility as an in vitro model for intestinal MRV3 infection. Methods: PIOs were isolated and established from the jejunum of a miniature pig. Established PIOs were characterized using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and immunofluorescence assays (IFAs) to confirm the expression of small intestine-specific genes and proteins, such as Lgr5, LYZI, Mucin-2, ChgA, and Villin. The monolayered PIOs and three-dimensional (3D) PIOs, obtained through their distribution to expose the apical surface, were infected with MRV3 for 2 h, washed with Dulbecco's phosphate-buffered saline, and observed. Viral infection was confirmed using PCR and IFA. We performed quantitative real-time reverse transcription-PCR to assess changes in viral copy numbers and gene expressions linked to intestinal epithelial genes and antiviral activity. Results: The established PIOs have molecular characteristics of intestinal organoids. Infected PIOs showed delayed proliferation with disruption of structures. In addition, infection with MRV3 altered the gene expression linked to intestinal epithelial cells and antiviral activity, and these effects were observed in both 2D and 3D models. Furthermore, viral copy numbers in the supernatant of both models increased in a time-dependent manner. Conclusions: We suggest that PIOs can be an in vitro model to study the infection mechanism of MRV3 in detail, facilitating pharmaceutical development.

줄리언 반즈의 정체성, 민족성 그리고 역사의 재건축 -히스토리오그래픽 메타픽션으로서의 『잉글랜드, 잉글랜드』 (Julian Barnes' Reconstruction of Identity, Nationality and History: England, England as a Historiographic Metafiction)

  • Many recent British novels engage with the construction and deconstruction of history and identity; and in dealing with these historical, or historicised novels it seems to be an untouchable ground that truth is beyond grasp. Even when approached, its authenticity should be examined under the post-modern "incredulity toward metanarrative" discourses. Julian Barnes's 1998 novel England, England may be one of these. Yet, unlike others it achieves a complicated and controversial status as a new kind of historiographic metafiction by providing selfconscious reflections on the invention of innocence and the questionable notion of historical authenticity against the background of current postmodern historical, cultural, and literary explorations. The book, set in a near-future, namely post-post-modern England, starts with a story of a young girl, Martha Cochrane, whose first memory goes back to her early infantile years. Yet, the narrator comments that it is a lie, "her first artfully, innocently arranged lie," since memory, or history, is a product of identity, and vice versa. Her memory of the jigsaw puzzle is both a reminiscent and a significant component of who she is now, both a simulacrum and the original of herself. The correlation between her individual memory and identity parallels that of a region, England, in formation of its history and nationality. "England, England" is the replicated miniature of the former glorious Kingdom as well as a becoming der Ding an sich (the thing itself). In search of the English history and identity, the author satirizes the modern mind's perception of the unreliability and arbitrariness of memory and history, and further explores the alternative to the postmodern discourses by suggesting the probability of inventing innocence glimpsed in children's face "believing while disbelieving." In doing so, the author reconstructs not only the history of Englishness on the ground where nothing seems to be solid, but more importantly also the postmodern theme of relativity in relation to memory, history and identity.

A retrospective study of age-specific disease incidence in major popular breed dogs in Republic of Korea

  • Dogs exhibit patterns of health issues that vary by life stage. An understanding of disease incidence with respect to breed and age/life stage could be an important component of canine health management and welfare. This study aimed to describe the age-specific disease incidence of 3 small dog breeds that attended veterinary clinics in the Republic of Korea, based on data from electronic veterinary medical records (EVMRs). A total of 40,785 EVMRs from Maltese (n = 21,355), Miniature Poodle (n = 11,658) and Shih Tzu dogs (n = 7,772) were analyzed. Common health problems in 3 small dog breeds were 'diseases of the skin' and 'diseases of the ear,' respectively. Among dogs aged ≤ 3 years, 'preventive medicine' was the most common cause cited for veterinary clinic visits. Among dogs aged 4 to 8 years, the most frequent health problems were 'diseases of the skin.' Among dogs aged 9 to 13 years, 'heart diseases,' 'kidney diseases,' 'mammary gland tumor,' and 'neoplasia (unspecified)' were considerably more frequent, compared to the rates in dogs ≤3 years. Among dogs aged ≥ 14 years, 'heart diseases' and 'sneezing/cough' were the main health problems. In all breeds, the frequencies of 'diseases of circulatory system,' 'diseases of respiratory system,' 'diseases of the nervous system,' 'endocrine' and 'neoplasia' increased rapidly with aging. This surveillance could inform strategies for disease screening tests and management based on life stage in these dog breeds and enable more effective health management.

큰금매화(Trollius chinensis) 종자의 형태적 특성 및 발아조건 분석 (Morphological Characteristics and Germination Conditions of Seeds in Trollius chinensis)

  • 기온, 강수량 등 기후변화에 따른 식물 멸종이 증가함에 따라 기후변화에 민감한 북방계식물의 중요성이 증대되고 있는 실정이다. 본 연구 대상종의 큰금매화(Trollius chinensis)는 북한 및 북방계 식물로 고산 초지에서 자생하는 미나리아재비과 여러해살이풀이며, 기후변화에 직·간접적인 영향을 받고 있는 실정이다. 이에, 큰금매화의 발아조건을 규명하여 종 복원과 대량증식법 개발을 위한 기초자료를 확보하는 데 목적이 있다. 종자의 형태학적 특성은 원형~계란형(circular~obovate)에 작은 돌기가 겹겹이 있는(Colliculate) 형태였으며, 종피는 진갈색이다. 크기는 길이 1.37±0.741mm, 너비 0.81±0.531mm이었다. 종자의 단면을 확인한 결과, 배는 작은 선형태(Axial-miniature)이었으며, 종자는 91%의 충실도를 보였으며 TZ 테스트에서 모두 배가 전체적으로 붉은색으로 염색되어 양호한 활력을 보였다. 처리구별 발아실험 전 종자 소독은 파종 전 70% 에탄올 처리 후 2%의 NaOCl을 넣어 10분 동안 소독 후 멸균수로 5회 수세하고 멸균수를 제거하여 침지처리에 사용하였다. 발아실험 결과 종자의 최종발아율(FGP)은 15/6℃ GA3 1000mg·L-1 처리에서 40.0%로 가장 높았다. 평균발아일수(MGT)는 15/6℃ 무처리에서 22.8일로 가장 높았으며, 최종발아일의 평균은 약 9.5일로 확인되었다. 대부분 GA3 처리에서 최종발아율(FGP)이 20% 이상 높게 나타났으며, GA3 500mg·L-1 보다는 GA3 1000mg·L-1의 조건에서 3.3~5.5% 최종발아율(FGP)이 향상된 것으로 확인되었다. 한편, 온도 조건 25/15℃ 무처리에서는 발아가 확인되지 않았다.

넙치(Paralichthys olivaceus) 산소 소비율에 미치는 Pop-up Satellite Archival Tag (PSAT) 체외 부착과 수온의 영향 (External Attachment of Pop-up Satellite Archival Tag (PSAT) and Water Temperature Affect Oxygen Consumption Rate of the Olive Flounder Paralichthys olivaceus)

  • This study aimed to examine the effect of external pop-up satellite archival tags (PSATs) attachment and water temperature on the oxygen consumption rate (OCR) of the olive flounder (mean body weight 2281.7 g). The OCRs of fish were measured under conditions of three different water temperature conditions (15, 20, and 25℃) and two different tagging methods [non-tagging, control; bio-logger external attachment with a miniature PSAT (dummy mrPAT), BEA] using a closed flow-through respirometer. The OCRs of fish linearly increased with the increase in water temperature in both the control and BEA (P<0.001); however, the OCRs of BEA were approximately 1.8-1.9 times lower than those of the control at each water temperature (P<0.001). The Q10 values of the control and BEA were the highest in the water temperature range of 15 to 20℃, but sensitivity to water temperature changes was higher in BEA than in the control. The metabolic energy loss rate (MEL) of fish increased with increasing water temperature regardless of external tagging, but the MEL of the control was higher than that of BEA (P<0.001). These results demonstrate that OCR, thermal sensitivity, and energy expenditure are all affected in adult olive flounder with external PSAT attachment.

Computed Tomography for Diagnosing Chylothorax Associated with Cranial Vena Cava Thrombosis in a Dog

  • A 13-year-old male neutered Miniature Pinscher presented with coughing and dyspnea. The dog had been coughing for the past 4 weeks. The patient had mild dehydration on physical examination, and muffled heart sounds were detected. Thoracic radiographs revealed pleural effusion, which was consistent with chylous effusion based on cytological and biochemical evaluations. Computed tomography (CT) lymphangiography, which was performed via intrametatarsal pad injection, revealed no evidence of thoracic duct rupture or obvious leakage. On CT angiography (CTA), an intraluminal filling defect was identified in the cranial vena cava (CrVC). CrVC thrombosis with secondary chylothorax was diagnosed based on CT lymphangiography and CTA. Clopidogrel, rivaroxaban, and recombinant tissue-plasminogen activator were prescribed. The follow-up CTA, 4 months after diagnosis, revealed a decrease in the thrombus, and no pleural effusion was identified. Although CrVC thrombosis is an uncommon presentation in veterinary patients, thrombus in the CrVC should be considered as a differential diagnosis of chylothorax in dogs. CT lymphangiography and CTA could be helpful in identifying and differentiating the underlying etiologies of chylothorax.
