Content, swelling, concentration, drainage of clay are critical factors that could control rock failures as well as discontinuous geological structures like faults and joints. Especially, the proportional components of clay minerals can be one of few direct indicators to a rock failure caused well by rainfall. Criticality of the role of clay mineral contents gets bigger in the slope and tunnel design. This study, using a horizontal boring core of pelitic/psammitic phyllite from the OO tunnel construction site, aims to investigate mineral composition changes related to fault distribution and their mechanical effects to the activity of these discontinuous layers (i.e., clay-filled fault layers), and eventually to define correlation among rock compositions, weathering products and rock instabilities. Field survey and lab tests were carried out for the composition and strength index of fault clay minerals within the core samples and microscopic analysis of fresh and weathered rock samples.

This work describes highly efficient recovery and selective leaching of Zn from electric arc furnace dust (EAFD) with different physicochemical properties, induced by acid leaching at ambient conditions. The chemical compositions, mineralogical phases, and particle sizes of the EAFDs were analyzed and compared. The effects of leaching time, liquid/solid ratio, acid type, and acid concentration on the selective leaching of Zn were also studied. The EAFD with high Fe/Zn ratio (> 1, EAFD3) was richer in ZnFe2O4 and exhibited larger particle size than samples with low Fe/Zn ratio (< 1, EAFD1,2). ANOVA analysis revealed that the Fe/Zn ratios of the EAFDs also have a significant effect on Zn extraction (p < 0.005). Selective leaching of Zn with minimum Fe dissolution was obtained at pH > 4.5, regardless of other parameters or sample properties. The maximum Zn extraction rate obtained by the pH control was over 97% for EAFD1 and EAFD2, 76% for EAFD3, and 80% for EAFD4. The present results confirm that the Fe/Zn ratio can be used to identify EAFDs that permits facile and high-yield Zn recovery, and pH can be used as a process control factor for selective leaching of Zn regardless of any differences in the properties of the EAFD sample.
Mineral that is included to wild ginseng rhizomes that is assumed that is born at X-ray diffraction(XRD) analysis result 20 appears as is different according to each part by whewellite. Whewellite is accumulated much on rhizomes in wild ginseng, but do not exist hardly from mail body of root. The 6 years that in rhizomes of ginseng yet whewellite decision unobserved. This is considered by thing associated with ingredient of growth period of mineral and soil of plantation. Paleosol layers lying on top of the terrace in Jeongdongjin area appear to have been deposited under generally well-drained condition with periodic waterlogging. From a 4.5m-long profile observed, a total of 6 stratigraphic units were identified. Grain-size analysis indicates the dominance of silty and clay materials with some portions with high sand content. Major mineralogical elements are quartz, feldspar, mica and chlorite. Geo-chemical composition shows little change throughout the stratigraphy with some fluctuation in chemical weathering index. Marked increase in magnetic susceptibility is recognizable where stratigraphic unit changes. Soil- wedge layer is developed around 50cm below the surface with concentration of grains of AT tephra (c. 25,000 BP). An OSL date of c. 110,000 BP was obtained from a sand layer lying below the paleosol.
Gwangjueupseong (Gwangju Town Wall) has been found in the site of the Asian Culture Complex (former Provincial Government of Jeonnam) by archaeological field survey. The length of the remaining wall is 85.1m, and the Town Wall consists of ten kinds of rock type. The major rock types are dacite (41.1%) and andesite (35.7%). Dacite composes main rock blocks of the wall, and andesite is used to fill the cavity between main rock blocks. These rocks look very similar to basement rocks of the Mudeung Mountain on the basis of occurrence features, magnetic susceptibility, petrological, mineralogical and geochemical properties. Also, quarrying traces were found on the southwestern slope of the mountain along the Jeungsimsa Temple valley. Thus, it is probable that the rock materials of the Gwangju Town Wall were supplied from the Mudeung Mountain and that they were transported along the Gwangju river.
Farmers in highlands in South Korea pile up 20 to 30 cm of saprolites, mostly granite- or granite-gneiss-weathered materials, on surface of arable lands every three to five years to compensate eroded soil and sometimes to discontinue soil-borne diseases. Immediate increases of infiltration and percolation rates are expected with coarse textured saprolites while soil drainage becomes poorer in a long-term. In this study, we analyzed mineralogical characteristics and micro-morphology of plow pan to investigate processes making impermeable layers. Soil samples were collected from plow pan, usually located at approximately 20 cm soil depth and at the lower part of piled saprolites, in arable lands in Hoenggye 5-ri, Daekwanryeong-myeon, Gangwon-do (N37.7, E128.7) in which saprolites were added 2, 4, and 8 years ago; saprolites were transported from similar areas. The saturated hydraulic conductivity decreased over time. Based on soil thin section pedography, quartz and feldspar accounted for a majority of minerals. The size of feldspar decreased and macropores became filled with clay or silt particles over time, which implies that macropores were packed with particles weathered from feldspar. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis indicated that intensity of feldspar decreased over time and the reverse was true for kaolinite and illite, indicating that feldspar and mica weathering induced formation of kaolinite and illite. Conclusively, deteriorated drainage by formation of impermeable layers in farms with piled saprolites was caused by accumulation of clay minerals such as kaolinite and illite in macropores; illite and kaolinite can be formed by weathering of mica and feldspar, respectively.
This study investigated the mineralogical properties of bentonite and illite and evaluated the Cs sorption at various concentrations (Cw≈1-105 ㎍/L). Bentonite samples, collected from South Korea and USA, majorly consisted of Ca- and Na-montmorillonite, showed large cation exchange capacity (CEC, 91.4 and 47.3 meq/100 g) and specific surface area (SSA, 46.1 and 39.7 m2/g). In contrast, illite sample (USA) had relatively low values for 14.4 meq/100g of CEC and 29.3 m2/g of SSA, respectively. Bentonite and illite had different non-linear sorption for Cs along with Cw. At low Cw<10 ㎍/L, illite showed higher sorption capacity than bentonite despite low CEC because of the existence of specific sorption sites at the weathered mineral edge. However, as Cw increased, bentonite represented high sorption capacity because the cation exchange between Cs and interlayer cations was effective at high Cw conditions. These results implicated that the Cs concentration is important to evaluate the sorption performance of bentonite and illite. Finally, the Cuadros' kinetic model for illitization using various K concentrations (2×10-5 and 1.7×10-3 mol/L) and temperature (100-200℃) showed that up to 50% of the montmorillonite in bentonite could be converted to illite, suggesting that the illitization should be considered to evaluate the sorption performance of the bentonite in deep geological disposal repository.
There are 82 volcanoes active during the 48 weeks of 2019 (January 30 to December 31, 2019; USGS data) Approximately 80~90 volcanoes are active on the Earth for a year. More than 91% of these volcanoes are took place in the circum-Pacific volcanic belt, which is commonly called 'Ring of Fire'. This status coincides with the distribution maps of active volcanoes on the earth: about 80 percent on subduction zone of the convergent plate boundaries; 15 percent on divergent plate boundaries; 5 percent on intra-plate zone. Typically five volcanoes are most active during the survey period (48 weeks); Dukono (Halmahera, Indonesia) 48 times, Aira (Kyushu, Japan) 47 times, Ebeko (Paramushir Island, Russsia) 46 times, Merapi (Central Java, Indonesia) 37 times, Krakatau (Indonesia) 33 times. The comparison of volcanic activity between 2018 and 2019 showed no significant difference. It is assumed that volcanic activity remains stable.

Lime stabilization has conventionally been listed amid the key techniques of chemical stabilization. Replacing lime with sustainable agro-based by-products have gained prominence in recent decades. Bagasse ash (BA) is one such potential alternatives, an industrial waste with abundance in production, and industries exploring sustainable solutions for its safe disposal. Supplementing BA with lime could be an ideal approach to reduce lime consumption. However, suitability of BA and lime for the stabilization of expansive clays, such as black cotton (BC) soil is yet to be explored. This paper therefore aims to investigate the suitability of BA-lime mixtures to stabilize BC soil with emphasis to compaction behaviors and unconfined compressive strength (UCS) using standard laboratory procedures. Suitability of BA-lime mixture is then assessed against addition of calcium sulphate which, from previous experience, is detrimental with lime stabilization. Experimental outcomes nominate 15% BA as the optimum value observed from both compaction and UCS data, while addition of 4% lime to 15% BA showed the best results. Mineralogical and microstructural analysis show the presence of cementitious compounds with addition of lime and calcium sulphate with curing periods. While, formation of Ettringite needles were noted with the addition of calcium sulphate in BA-lime mixtures (at optimum values) after 90-day curing, and UCS results showed a decrease at this point. To this end, addition of BA in lime stabilization showed encouraging results as assessed from the compaction and UCS results. Nonetheless usage of calcium salts, with utmost emphasis on calcium sulphate and equivalent should be avoided.

Daegokcheon Stream in Daegok-ri, Ulju-gun, is an area with a developed valley and bedrock from Gajisan Provincial Park to the confluence of the Taehwa River across the Yangsan Fault. To measure the rock of Bangudae petroglyphs, the mineralogical weathering, joints, and scours or cavities at the bottom were confirmed. The measurement was carried out for a short period of time on the joint of the bedrock on which the Bangudae petroglyphs were engraved. Compared to the measured value obtained using existing optical fiber (Ch4 150 ㎛), a displacement value of 300 ㎛ was obtained using the non-attached, non-contact type of measuring instrument. In the future, it is inferred that this instrument could be used for various cultural properties if the HSV-value suitable for illuminance and various measurement experiences are stored.
