  • Studies focusing on the constantly changing buying behavior and product preferences of a booming teen market are rare and this is particularly true in the Philippines. To address this gap in the literature, this study focused on the supermarket brands of cologne preferred by teens in the Philippines such as Lewis & Pearl (L&P), Johnson's Baby Cologne, Juicy, Bench, Ellips, Fiona, Bambini and Baby Flo which are manufactured by various competing companies. Essentially, this study presented and described the profile and buying behavior of cologne users and non-cologne users and determined whether preferential differences existed between these brands. The respondents consisted of 473 teens all over the Philippines stratified in terms of general location via the three major groups of islands in the Philippines: Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao. Respondents came from selected schools in Quezon City in Metro Manila, Sariaya in Quezon Province, Cebu City, and Digos City to represent the Greater Metro Manila Area, Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao, respectively. Findings showed that almost all of the respondents used cologne at varying degrees. In general, teens use several scents and brands of cologne and continually shift from one scent/brand to another scent/brand. This made it difficult for any company to capture loyal consumers. The most popular brands used by teenagers were Bench (61.7%), Lewis and Pearl (59%), Juicy (42%), Afficionado (32%), Fiona (19.3%), Penshoppe (18%), Bambini (12.6%), Ellips (11.3%) and Zen Zest (7.5%). Fragrance or scent is the top priority of teenagers in choosing a cologne brand, followed by brand name, affordability, bottle design and endorser. The spray bottle type of colognes is preferred even if cologne spray bottles are priced higher than the splash cologne bottle type. Managerial implications of these findings for market players, marketing scholars and prospective investors are presented.

  • This monographic study presents morphological descriptions of eight species of Padina collected from the Visayas and Mindanao regions of southern Philippines, including distributions of each species and a taxonomic key for all the species examined. Of these species, three are new records for the Philippines, namely: P. fernandeziana Skottsberg and Levring, P. jonesii Tsuda and P. moffittiana Abbott and Huisman. One species, P. antillarum (Kützing) Piccone, represents a new nomenclatural record, which is applied to a Philippine species for the first time. Four species previously reported in the Philippines are reconfirmed and described P. australis Hauck, P. minor Yamada, P. boryana Thivy and P. sanctae-crucis Borgesen. All eight species studied have distromatic thalli, except for P. antillarum which is tetrastromatic. Three of these have indusiate sporangia, namely: P. sanctae-crucis, P. moffittianaand P. fernandeziana.

  • AutoCor is a method for the automatic acquisition and classification of corpora of documents in closely-related languages. It is an extension and enhancement of CorpusBuilder, a system that automatically builds specific minority language corpora from a closed corpus, since some Tagalog documents retrieved by CorpusBuilder are actually documents in other closely-related Philippine languages. AutoCor used the query generation method odds ratio, and introduced the concept of common word pruning to differentiate between documents of closely-related Philippine languages and Tagalog. The performance of the system using with and without pruning are compared, and common word pruning was found to improve the precision of the system.

  • A subset S of V (G), where G is a graph without isolated vertices, is a double dominating set of G if for each $x{{\in}}V(G)$, ${\mid}N_G[x]{\cap}S{\mid}{\geq}2$. This paper, shows that any positive integers a, b and n with $2{\leq}a<b$, $b{\geq}2a$ and $n{\geq}b+2a-2$, can be realized as domination number, double domination number and order, respectively. It also characterize the double dominating sets in the Cartesian and tensor products of two graphs and determine sharp bounds for the double domination numbers of these graphs. In particular, it show that if G and H are any connected non-trivial graphs of orders n and m respectively, then ${\gamma}_{{\times}2}(G{\square}H){\leq}min\{m{\gamma}_2(G),n{\gamma}_2(H)\}$, where ${\gamma}_2$, is the 2-domination parameter.

  • Recently, import supply of glass eels from Philippines has been increased in South Korea, and the species distinction was very important to import traders and Anguilla marmorata and A. bicolor pacifica are major species at Philippines. In this study, the species distinction and the rate were researched targeting imported glass eels from the estuaries of North Luzon and the South Mindanao in May and July, 2014. Dorsal fin position and pigmentation pattern at caudal fin are the trait standard for species distinction. The results about morphological identification were coincide with the result of the genetic identification, and the regional distribution of A. marmorata rate was over 90% at North Ruzon in May. However, the rates of A. bicolor pacifica and A. mamorata were 63.3% and 36.7% in May, and were 53.3% and 46.7% in July respectively at South Mindanao.

  • The synergistic interactions of supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs) with ordinary portland cement (OPC) in multi-blended systems could enhance the mechanical and durability properties of concrete and increase the amount of cement that can be replaced. In this study, the characteristics of the hydration products as well as paste microstructure of blended cement containing 20% coal fly ash, 10% rice hull ash and 10% sugar mill lime sludge in quaternary blended system was investigated. Portlandite content, hydration products, compressive strength, pore size distribution and microstructural architecture of hydrated blended cement pastes were examined. The quaternary blended cement paste showed lower compressive strength, reduced amount of Portlandite phases, and higher porosity compared to plain hardened cement paste. The interaction of SCMs with OPC influenced the hydration products, resulting to the formation of ettringite and monocarboaluminate phases. The blended cement paste also showed extensive calcium silicate hydrates and calcium aluminate silicate hydrates but unrefined compared to plain cement paste. In overall, the expected synergistic reaction was significantly hindered due to the low quality of supplementary cementitious materials used. Hence, pre-treatments of SCMs must be considered to enhance their reactivity as good quality SCMs can become limited in the future.

  • An eddy-resolving free-surface primitive-equation model with nonlinear terrain-following coordinates is established to study the exchange of water masses among the Asian marginal seas and their adjacent waters. A curvilinear coordinate system is used to generate the horizontal grid with a variable resolution for the regional oceans from $5^{\circ}$S to $45^{\circ}$N and $100^{\circ}$E to $155^{\circ}$E. The higher resolution region has about a 10 km by 10 km grid covering the complex geometry of the coastal marginal seas, while the lower resolution region has about a 30 km by 30 km grid covering the eastern Pacific. The model is initialized by the Levitus annual climitology and forced by the monthly mean air-sea fluxes of momentum, heat, and freshwater derived from the Comprehensive Ocean-Atmosphere Data Set. High-resolution and low-viscosity are identified as the key factors for a better representation of the exchange of waters through narrow straits and passages between the marginal seas and their adjacent waters. The dynamics of the loop currents and eddies in the South China Sea and Celebes Sea are examined in detail. It has found that the anticyclonic loop and detached eddies from the Kuroshio through the Luzon Strait play an important role in transporting warm and salty water into the South China Sea, while the cyclonic circulation of the Mindanao Current in the Celebes Sea plays a role in contributing cold water to the Indonesian throughflow. The deep undercurrent of the western Pacific is shown to provide fresher water to the South China Sea and Celebes Sea. These modeling results suggest that the exchange processes via the narrow straits and passages are of fundamental importance to the maintenance of water masses for the marginal sea region.

  • This study was conducted to determine some physical and chemical properties of the soil and their relationship to spectroscopic-based (visible range) analytical methods while evaluating soil organic matter fractions and soil quality in degraded and non-degraded soils in a wide range of environments. Soil samples were collected from the different landscape positions of cultivated and noncultivated soils, and the latter from the same landscape positions but with different vegetation, at Songco, Lantapan, Bukidnon. The physical and chemical properties of the soils were determined at the SPAL, CMU, Musuan, Bukidnon while the metagenomic properties were determined at the Laboratory of the University of Missourri, Missourri, USA. Bulk density and air dry soil strength values of the soils from the cultivated areas were generally higher than those of the uncultivated areas. Also, soils at the summit generally had lower bulk density and soil strength values than the other landscape positions. Moreover, soils planted to camote (Ipomoea batatas) had higher bulk density and soil strength values compared to soils grown to pepper under the trees. Exchangeable calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg), and potassium (K) and cation exchange capacity (CEC) of the soils were generally higher in uncultivated areas than those of the cultivated areas. A similar trend was observed for the potassium permanganate ($KMnO_4$)-oxidizable organic C contents determined by spectroscopic method and the total C contents determined by the Walkley-Black method. The $KMnO_4$-oxidizable organic C contents determined by spectroscopic method and the total C contents determined by the Walkley-Black method were closely related ($r=0.631^{**}$). Hence, the former method shows promise in assessing soil quality as it is a rapid test, relatively low cost and can be distributed as a field kit either with a portable spectrometer or with a color chart.

  • As the global demand for the carrageenophyte Kappaphycus is steadily increasing, its overall productivity, carrageenan quality, and disease resistance are gradually declining. In the face of this dilemma, wild Kappaphycus populations are viewed as sources of new cultivars that could potentially enhance production; therefore, assessment of their diversity is crucial. This study highlights the morphological and genetic diversity of wild Kappaphycus species obtained from two sites in the Philippines. Nucleotide alignments of available 5' region of the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI-5P) and cox2-3 spacer sequences of Kappaphycus confirmed the presence of K. alvarezii in Guiuan, Eastern Samar and K. striatus in Bolinao, Pangasinan. Based on the concatenated sequences of the COI-5P and the cox2-3 spacer, nine novel haplotypes were observed along with other published haplotypes. However, there was no relationship between haplotype and morphology. These newly recognized haplotypes indicate a reservoir of unutilized wild genotypes in the Philippines, which could be taken advantage of in developing new cultivars with superior traits. DNA barcodes generated from this study effectively expand the existing databank of Kappaphycus sequences and can provide insights in elucidating the genetic diversity of Kappaphycus species in the country.

  • Rice has always been the anchor of food security in the Philippines and the government is adamant about sustaining rice production by ensuring reliable irrigation water availability. Among the numerous irrigation schemes, the importance of the Pulangui River Irrigation System (PRIS) is undeniable, as it is the largest and primary irrigation source for rice production areas which are considered the food basket in Northern Mindanao. However, the ageing irrigation structures, unlined canals, long-standing water delivery systems, and climate change are compromising the performance of PRIS; and every year, during the dry and wet season, the maximum rice irrigable area is not achieved. From the field-scale water management perspective, untimely irrigation application, an unregulated roster of turn for irrigation among farmers, and the traditional practice of flooding the rice fields are the main causes of substantial water losses in conveyance, distribution, and farm application of irrigation water. Hence, proper irrigation scheduling is crucial to cultivate the maximum irrigable area by ensuring equity among the farmers and to increase the water use efficiency and yield. In this study, the FAO single crop coefficient approach was adopted to estimate rice water requirements, which were subsequently used to suggest appropriate irrigation schedules based on the recommended field-scale rice cultivation practices. The study results would improve the irrigation system management in the study area by facilitating in regulating the canal water flows and releases according to suggested irrigation schedules that could lead to increased benefited area, yield, and water efficiency without straining the available water resources.
