Allow me to introduce the development of an FM transmitter. The transmitter uses millmeter waves at the frequency of 60 GHz, and it can produce as much as 20 mW power with the band width of 1 GHz. The great feature of the FM transmitter is that it has been created by the special technique of utilizing the NRD (non radiative dielectric) waveguide. The advantage of adopting the NRD waveguide is that it can significantly reduce transmission loss. We can construct a small-size NRD guide transmitter in a simple way that has superb transmission performance. The NRD guide transmitter is very useful for CATV transmission or transmission over a wide range. In addition, the transmitter has almost the same band width as optical communication, and the data transmission speed of the transmitter is faster than that of optical communication. A transmitter with these merits would be highly appreciated as a way of ultra-highspeed communication network over short distances.

In this paper, we have proposed and experimentally performed a polarization and phase control method of an optical signal which has same wavelength with the optical carrier to improve phase characteristics of a continuous wave(CW) generated by the double sideband-suppressed carrier(DSB-SC) as one of the famous photomixing technique for making sub-millimeter and terahertz waves. A polarization and phase controlled optical signal has been coupled with the general DSB-SC on an optical coupler. The output of the optical coupler is then photomixed by a photomixer. From our analysis and measurement results, we have found that the amplitude of the generated sub-mm and terahertz CW signal is higher 1.5 dB and the phase noise is lower about 3 dB@10 kHz offset frequency than the general DSBSC. Consequently, since our proposed method has improved the amplitude and phase noise of CW signals in the sub-mm and terahertz bands, it can be helpful results to make low cost CW generator in sub-millimeter and subterahertz bands.

This paper examines the feasibility of using periodically varying dielectric layers with dielectric constant ${\epsilon}_1$ and ${\epsilon}_2$ at millimeter wave frequency for implementing the frequency-selective reflectors that permit feed separation in large aperture reflecting antenna systems. For oblique incidence, it is found that the total reflection can be obtained at different frequencies for proper choices of ${\epsilon}_1$, ${\epsilon}_2$ and the geometric parameters. In the frequency-selective reflector designed, the bandwidth for 90% reflection is always found to be much narrower than that for 90% transmission.

In this paper, planar power dividers/combiners for millimeter waves K-band or bands which can be printed on the substrates of hybrid or monolithic IC by surface mounting are designed and studied. Power dividers/combiners, and the conductor loss of microstrip lines in particualr the existing Wilkinson power dividers/combiners is modified ad amployes by ist equivalent circuit. Microwave CAD program SUPEROMPACT is employed for the Wilkinson power combiner which is modified and analyzed to reduce the high frequency coupling between the branches of the combiner, and the method to diminish the sensitivity of the input reflection of $2^n$-way power dividers/combiners is studied employing the commerical microwave CAD program package SUPERCOMPACT.

Photomixing techniques beating two optical signals with different wavelengths and strong correlations are also very useful techniques to make a continuous wave(CW) signals in the range of millimeter(mm) and terahertz(THz) frequencies. An optical double sideband-suppressed carrier(DSB-SC) technique is one of the popular techniques to generate two optical signals with different wavelengths and strong correlations. DSB-SC signals with strong correlations are generated by a CW modulation of an optical carrier with a local oscillator and an optical modulator. In the previous parers related the DSB-SC for producing the CW signals within the range of mm and THz frequencies, there have been no reports why the optical carrier should suppress. In order to clear that, we have analyzed and measured the characteristics of the mm-wave CW signals made by the DSB-SC photomixing in this paper. From our analysis and measurement results, compared with the case of the DSB with the maximized optical carrier, the power and phase noise have improved about 23.9 dB and 21 dBc/Hz(@ 1 MHz offset frequency) in the case of the DSB with the minimized optical carrier (that is to say, the DSB-SC). Consequently, it is evident reason that the optical carrier should sufficiently suppress to obtain the mm-wave CW signals with the high power and low noise. This paper has given very helpful data to make mm- and THz-wave CW signals using photomixing techniques with the DSB-SC because the reason why the optical carrier should be suppressed is reported in this paper based on the numerical and experimental results.

This paper proposed a very simple method of extracting an effective permittivity from the data of scattering parameters measured on the transmission line of coplanar waveguides in the frequency range of microwave or millimeter waves. This is an extracting method of an effective permittivity $\varepsilon$$_{eff}$ in the case of $\beta$$\ell$ =n$\pi$ (n=integer), where the value of S$_{11}$ changes abruptly following the operating frequency. The experimental value of the effective permittivity $\varepsilon$$_{eff}$ on a dielectric substrate of Rogers 4003$^{TM}$ material of $\varepsilon$$_{r}$ =3.38 showed the value of 2.042, which differs in the error of -3.4% to 8% from those calculated from the previously reported formulae. This result showed that the measurement method was very simple, as well as applied directly to the fabricated circuit patterns, even though the circuit patterns might be complicated or on the substrate of different dielectric materials.s.als.

We analyze the self-pulsation(SP) characteristics due to mode beating of two modes emitted in a multi-section complex-coupled (CC) DFB laser composed of two DFB sections and a phase control section between them. SP frequency due to mode beating of the two modes is determined by the difference of grating periods in the two CC DFB regions. As the difference of grating periods in the two CC DFB regions increases, the SP frequency increases from very low frequency to the THz region. In the case of a mode which is not located in the stop band of the other DFB region, the mode propagates into the other DFB region without a high reflection, so that output powers emitted in a multi-section CC DFB laser have high modulation indexes due to the large interaction between the two modes.

Using ultrasonic standing waves, micro particles submerged or flowing in fluid can be manipulated. Due to acoustic radiation force of ultrasound, particles are forced to move to pressure nodal or antinodal lines. In this work, we propose a method to control the position of micro particle in a flow by adjusting the frequency of the standing wave. To this end, standing wave field generation system including a few millimeter thick micro channel was established using an immersible ultrasonic transducer. The present generation system works valid in a frequency range between 2.0 MHz and 2.5 MHz. We observed the SiC particles in water moved to pressure nodal lines by the standing wave. The effect of the channel thickness and operating frequency was also investigated. Interestingly, it was shown that the operating frequency have a close relation with the location of the pressure nodal line. Consequently, it fan be said that the position of particle movement rail be controlled by adjusting the ultrasound frequency. The maximum range of the controllable position was about 261 micrometers under the given condition. The resulted observations reveal the possibility of various applications of the ultrasonic standing wave to the manipulation of particles submerged in a fluid.

We have designed and tuilt the quasioptical system for the dual channel receiver which is used for the simultaneous observation of the cosmic radio with 100GHz band and 150GHz band. The quasioptical system has been widely used to guide the beam for the millimeter and submillimeter waves. A Gaussian distribution of field and power transverse to their axis of propagation allow the simple and elegant theory of Gaussian quasioptics. Using the theory of Gaussian beam, we introduced the analysis of image beam which is applied for a wide range of frequency. In order to guide two beams from the Cassegrain antenna simultaneously, the quasioptical system and its components for the dual channel receiver were designed by using the image beam method. We have checked the characteristics of the quasioptical components and the system by using the heam measurement system, which is made by us. The quasioptical system has been installed in the dual channel receiver on the Cassegrain antenna. The performance of this system has been finally confimed through the successful simultaneous observation with two bands of the cosmic radio.

As the number of compound cavity modes within the stopband of DFB sections decreases, the frequency of mode hopping decreases for the variation of $\Delta$λ$_{B}$, which represents the difference between the Bragg wavelengths of two DFB sections, so that the number of abrupt changes of pulsation frequencies decreases. In addition, the pulsation frequency varies continuously for the variation of the phase in a phase tuning section for a fixed $\Delta$λ$_{B}$. The number of compound cavity modes within the stopband decreases as the length of DFB sections increases and the length of a phase tuning section decreases. Thus stable self-pulsation operations for the variation of $\Delta$λ$_{B}$ and the phase in a phase tuning section could be obtained by proper selection of the coupling strength and the length of each section.ction.
