A military tactical information communication network uses no base station and all mobile terminal are independent while mobile networks use an infra structure that a fixed base station supports many mobile terminals. A clustering system is more efficient than the existing one in small Ad-hoc network using a limited message size. The development of an adaptive clustering algorithm is necessary to maximize the network efficiency via a study on a clustering for military tactical information communication network.

Tactical Information Communication Network(TICN) is a concept-type integrated Military Communication system that enables precise command control and decision making by unifying the diversified military communication network and conveying diverse range of battle field information on real-time, at right place at right time. TICN is designed to advance into high speed, large capacity, long distance wireless relay transmission. To support mobility in battlefield environments, the application of Ad-hoc networking technology to its wireless communication has been examined. Ad-hoc network is consist of mobile nodes and nodes in the network depends on the cooperation of other nodes for forwarding of packets. In this context, some non-cooperating nodes may delay forwarding of packets or drop the packets. This may hamper the network as a whole and disrupt communication between the cooperating nodes. To solve this problem, we present a solution with a Node Weight Management Server(NWMS), which manages each node's weight according to its behavior in local area. When the NWMS detects misbehaving node, it increases the node's weight. If the node's weight exceeds a predefined threshold then the NWMS broadcasts the node's information into network to isolate the misbehaving node from the network. These mechanisms show that they are highly effective and can reliably detect a multitude of misbehaving node.

This paper proposes architecture of a cognitive radio engine platform and the allowable frequency channel reasoning method that enables acquisition of the allowable channels for the military tactical network environment. The current military tactical wireless communication system is increasing need to secure a supplementary radio frequency to ensure that multiple wireless networks for different military wireless devices coexist, so that tactical wireless communication between the same or different systems can be operated effectively. This paper presents the allowable frequency channel reasoning method based on cognitive radio engine for realizing DSA(Dynamic Spectrum Access) as an optimal available frequency channel. To this end, a case-based allowable frequency channel reasoning method for cognitive radio devices is proposed through modeling of primary user's traffic status and calculation of channel occupancy probability. Also through the simulation of the performance analysis, changing rate of collision probability between the primary users' occupancy channel and the available channel acquisition information that can be used by the cognitive radio device was analysed.

Recently, developments in the field of communication and network technologies induced new paradigm in the defense weapon system. As a consequence, military authorities develop the Tactical Information Communication Network(TICN) system to adapt to the changing paradigm. One of the most important functions of TICN is real-time communication. As a result, TICN system needs to receive real-time information from the battlefield, and the key technology to support these features is MANET(Mobile Ad-Hoc Network) routing protocol. In this paper, we analyze problems of the shortest path scheme in tactical Ad-Hoc networks, which is widely used in common Ad-Hoc networks. We propose efficient routing protocol for tactical MANET by considering the environment of small combat units, such as node position, speed and data size. The proposed algorithm shows reliable data transfer and low latency in battlefield.

Security has become one of the major concerns in mobile adhoc networks (MANETs). Data and voice communication amongst roaming battlefield entities (such as platoon of soldiers, inter-battlefield tanks and military aircrafts) served by MANETs throw several challenges. It requires complex securing strategy to address threats such as unauthorized network access, man in the middle attacks, denial of service etc., to provide highly reliable communication amongst the nodes. Intrusion Detection and Prevention System (IDPS) undoubtedly is a crucial ingredient to address these threats. IDPS in MANET is managed by Command Control Communication and Intelligence (C3I) system. It consists of networked computers in the tactical battle area that facilitates comprehensive situation awareness by the commanders for timely and optimum decision-making. Key issue in such IDPS mechanism is lack of Smart Learning Engine. We propose a novel behavioral based "Smart Multi-Instance Multi-Label Intrusion Detection and Prevention System (MIML-IDPS)" that follows a distributed and centralized architecture to support a Robust C3I System. This protocol is deployed in a virtually clustered non-uniform network topology with dynamic election of several virtual head nodes acting as a client Intrusion Detection agent connected to a centralized server IDPS located at Command and Control Center. Distributed virtual client nodes serve as the intelligent decision processing unit and centralized IDPS server act as a Smart MIML decision making unit. Simulation and experimental analysis shows the proposed protocol exhibits computational intelligence with counter attacks, efficient memory utilization, classification accuracy and decision convergence in securing C3I System in a Tactical Battlefield environment.

As tactical networks are gradually shifting toward IP-based flexible operation for diversified battlefield services, QoS(Quality-of-Service) coordination for service differentiation becomes essential to overcome the heterogeneous and scarce networking resources limitations. QoS coordination for tactical network traffic should be able to monitor and react the dynamic changes in underlying network topology and service priorities. In this paper, by adopting the emerging cloud-native service mesh concept into tactical network context, we study the feasibility of intelligent QoS coordination by employing tactical service mesh(TSM) as an additional layer to support enhanced traffic quality monitoring and control. The additional TSM layer can leverage distributed service-mesh proxies at tactical mesh WAN(Wide Area Network) nodes so that service-aware differentiated QoS coordination can be effectively designed and integrated with TSM-assisted traffic monitoring and control. Also, by validating the feasibility of TSM layer for QoS coordination with miniaturized experimental setup, we show the potential of the proposed approach with several approximated battlefield traffics over a simulated TSM-enabled tactical network.
With the rapid evolution of communication technology, it became possible to overcome the spatial and temporal limitations faced by humans to some extent. Furthermore, the quality of personal life was revolutionized with the emergence of the personal communication device commonly known as the smart phone. In terms of defense networks, however, due to restrictions from the military and security perspectives, the use of smart phones has been prohibited and controlled in the army; thus, they are not being used for any defense strategy purposes as yet. Despite the current consideration of smart phones for military communication, due to the difficulties of network configuration and the high cost of the necessary communication devices, the main tools of communication between soldiers are limited to the use of flag, voice or hand signals, which are all very primitive. Although these primitive tools can be very effective in certain cases, they cannot overcome temporal and spatial limitations. Likewise, depending on the level of the communication skills of each individual, communication efficiency can vary significantly. As the term of military service continues to be shortened, however, types of communication of varying efficiency depending on the levels of skills of each individual newly added to the military is not desirable at all. To address this problem, it is essential to prepare an intuitive network configuration that facilitates use by soldiers in a short period of time by easily configuring the strategy network at a low cost while maintaining its security. Therefore, in this article, the author proposes a Zigbee-based local strategic network by using Opnet and performs a simulation accordingly.

In the military field, according to the MIL-STD-188-220, which is an Ad-Hoc communication protocol used for sending out or receiving data and voice smoothly among nodes in the situation that wireless communication nodes move arbitrarily, data communication is cut off because nodes can not know topology changes perpetually in the link disconnection state due to node movement in the case that transmitters do not confirm whether data is delivered to receivers or not, and transmit only the data having routine precedence continuously. In order to solve this problem, we have proposed the technique that makes efficient data communication possible by achieving a rapid topology change detection and link information update using TEST frame. We have analyzed TEST frame application effects in the two aspects of the topology update delay time and the data transmission success ratio.
Recently, with the rapid development of video equipment and technology, tremendous video information is produced and utilized in military domain to acquire battlefield information or for effective command control. Note that the video playback devices currently used in the military domain ranges from low-performance tactical multi-functional terminals (TMFT) to high-performance video servers and the networks where the video information is transmitted also range from the low speed tactical information and communication network (TICN) to ultra-high speed defense broadband converged networks such as M-BcN. Therefore, there is a need for an efficient streaming technique that can efficiently transmit defense video information in heterogeneous communication equipment and network environments. To solve the problem, this paper proposes a Scalable Video Coding (SVC) and balanced selection algorithm based Peer-to-Peer (P2P) streaming technique and the feasibility of the proposed technique is verified by simulations. The simulation results based on our BitTorrent simulator show that the proposed balanced selection scheme outperforms the sequential or rarest selection algorithm.

Network robustness is one of the most important characteristics needed as the network. Over the military tactical communication network, robustness is a key function for maintaining attack phase constantly. Tactical Information Communication Network, called TICN, has mixed characteristics of lattice- and tree-type network topology, which looks somewhat weak in the viewpoint of network robustness. In this paper, we search articulation points and bridges in a current Tactical Information Communication Network using graph theory. To improve the weak points empirically searched, we try to add links to create the concrete network and then observe the change of network-based verification values through diminishing nodes. With these themes, we evaluate the generated networks through SNA techniques. Experimental results show that the generated networks' robustness is improved compared with current network structure.
