  • Objectives This study aimed at proposing a hypothetical principle to add or abstract herbs for modifying Taeeumjowi-tang.Method Based on Jema Lee's literatures such as Dongyisusebowon and Dongyisasangsipyeon, we analyzed contents related to Taeeumjowi-tang and its modification. Moreover, we reviewed physiological and pathological pecularities of Taeeumin symptomatology and applied the theory to induce the principle of the modified Taeeumjowi-tang in Sasang medicine. Results and Conclusions 1) We have found 10 modified Taeeumjowi-tang from Dongyisasangsipyeon. 2) Mahwangjowi-tang (麻黃調胃湯), Gogijowi-tang (固氣調胃湯), Shingijowi-tang (腎氣調胃湯), Euiyiinjowi-tang (薏苡仁調胃湯), Gamijowi-tang (加味調胃湯), and Gyeongheomjowi-tang (經驗調胃湯) are modified for Taeeumin who have original symptoms of more severe cold tendency. Especially, Gogijowi-tang helps to circulate energy-fluid from esophagus to skin, while Shingijowi-tang directly aids the function of esophagus. 3) Seungjijowi-tang (升芷調胃湯), Seunggeumjowi-tang (升芩調胃湯), Seunggijowi-tang (承氣調胃湯), and Jowisokmyung-tang (調胃續命湯) are modified for Taeeumin who have originally cold symtoms, accompanied by heat tendencies. Especially, Seungjijowi-tang helps to eliminate mild heat existing throughout skin and flesh, while Seunggeumjowi-tang gets rid of severe heat swarming in the flesh parts. Seunggijowi-tang can take away the most severe heat symptoms in the whole body

  • Based on the data collected during January of 1963, 1964 and 1965, heat transfer from the sea to the air over the south-western part of the Japan Sea was evaluated by the formula of Jacobs. The mean sensible heat transfer and the rate of evaporation in the mild winter of 1964 were 360ly day$\^$-1/ and 8.1mm day$\^$-1/, respectively. However, these values increased as much as 690ly day$\^$-1/ and 14.4mm day$\^$-1/ in the severe winter of 1963. The heat hudget of the Japan Sea in January were related to the magnitude of cold water mass formed in August in the Korea Strait.

  • Purpose: The focal ossification of auricular cartilage is an unusual clinical entity in which the ear becomes partially or totally rigid and immalleable. This condition may result from cold injury, local trauma, inflammation, or various systemic diseases. Patients may feel mild discomfort, but there are usually no other serious symptoms. We present a case of focal ossification of auricular cartilage in which the cause is unknown. Methods: A healthy 58-year-old man presented with a 2-year history of hard mass of right posterior auricular area. He denied any precipitating historical events like cold injury and inflammation. Routine testing did not demonstrate systemic abnormalities. Ultrasonographic examination revealed a $22{\times}10{\times}11mm$ sized heterogenous isoechoic mass showing an acoustic shadow. Results: Excisional biopsy was performed under local anesthesia. Histological examination revealed the ossification with deposition of trabecular bone in normal elastic cartilage. The patient was healed without any problems and satisfied with the result. Conclusion: We report clinical experience of focal ossification of auricular cartilage, which is quite a rare clinical entity. It should be considered that there is the possibility of ossification of cartilage when it meets the benign mass of the ear.

  • The outbreak of haemorrhagic speticemia and dermal lesions in cultured Rock sea breem in Jeju Island are frequently associated with keratitis. Prolonged infection leads to the symptoms accompanied by necrosis of fin and skin and the fishes died. Present study aims to study the histopathological changes of diseased fish muscle tissue. The tissue at the initial stage of infection showed normal muscular texture, however in the late stages of infection, muscular lesion had been expanded and hence, necrosis had progressed deeply into muscle tissue. Mild tissue in caudal fin was found with more necrosis, and gill tissues were also collapsed. In Kidney, renal tubules were teared along with tissue destruction (Espada, J et al, 1993). Hence in the present study, we examined the histopathological variation of the infection fishes, and this basic data would be used for future research of in haemorrhagic specticemia and dermal diseases.

  • This study was conducted to figure out the nutritional nature of seafoods categorized according to the medicinal effects and the usages introduced in Lim-Won-Sib-Rheuk.-Ji, one of the well-known encyclopedias published during the Chosun Dynasty. They were compared with those introduced in other cooking books in order to find out how they were used in the diet of real-life. The seafoods of the book were first categorized into the fish 20, the mollusk 5, the crustacea 4, and the shellfish 7, and reptile according to the biological taxonomy, and then each one was reviewed in terms of the taste and the food-nature. Generally, the fishes had the sweet taste; the crustacea and the shellfish the salty or sour in addition to the sweet taste; none of them were bitter or hot. Most of them had the mild nature; seven of them were regarded as warm; four as cool; one as cold from the standpoint of the traditional medicine. The food-nature of seafoods was closely related with the medicinal effects on the human body. These seafoods were characteristically used in daily dietary life as well as the medical applications; used as the side-dishes rather than the main-dishes. The cooking methods of boiling, steaming, and baking were preferred to drying and stewing. The preservation methods favored were the fermentation, drying and salting. These cooking and preservation methods were believed to reflect the nature of the seafoods to manifest the medicinal effects.

  • Levels of blister rust infection (from Cronartium ribicola) varied in western white pine(Pinus monticola Dougl.) seedlings grown in two nurseries in northern Idaho. This observation suggested the potential importance of environmental components operating on the blister rust pathosystem. In an experiment designed to test the influence of environmental conditions at two nurseries, seedlings of a single genetic source were unintentionally held in cold storage for 6 months longer at one nursery than at the other. Subsequently, these seedlings, which had been growing under nursery conditions for 7 months or 1 month, were inoculated with blister rust spores on September 9th, 1999. Infection efficiency measured on the seedlings with only 1 month of growth was 70X greater than on the seedlings that had 7 months for their new growth to mature. Results from this nursery test and infection levels of northern Idaho resistant selections in mild climates suggest that expression of genes related to rust resistance in western white pine can be manipulated by regulation of phonology. If so, several new molecular tools may be employed to enhance our understanding of environmental regulation of genes for blister rust resistance.

  • Human and animals are living by acclimation to environmental changes like high and cold temperature, nose, confinement, etc. If the above changes reach a defined levels, some physiological abnormal state could appear, which we call them as stress state. Catecholamines are excreted by the sympathetic-adrenomedullary system in free from in urine. Catecholamines are derived from the adrenal medulla and urinary epinephrine can be taken as a rough estemation of the activity of this gland. Many scientist reported the endocrinological change, excretion of catecholamine and its metabolites, stomach ulcer formation, etc. under the condition of the confinement and high temperature. In this study author gave restraint, electric shock and immersion stress to rats by administrating by HPLC and got the following results. 1. In the restriant experiment, epinephrine contents in control rat was 194.7 ng, but in Bohyulanshintang administered rat urine 198.9 ng of epinephrine was found. 2. In the electrical shock experiment, 199.5 ng of epinephrine was found in the control rat urine, but in Bohyulanshintang administered rat urine epinephrine content was 142.4 ng. 3. Dopamine contents in control rat urine the immersion environment was 118.9 ng, but in Bohyulanshintang administered rat urine only 55.2 ng of dopamine was found. 4. Incontrol rat stomach there appeared focal erosion and inflamatory exudate, but in experimental group these symptom were turned to mild condition.

  • The condition contrary to the physiological conditions obtained by the normal functioning of seven constituents of the body is defined as disease. The primary causes of the disease are emotional defilements of desire, hatred and delusion. The secondary causes of diseases are seasonal climatic changes, the agency of harmful demons, and improper diet or conduct. Once a disease occurs, it brings the disfunctioning of the three humors of wind, bile, and phlegm. Therefore all the disease should be examined and determined which of theses three humors effect its nature the most. There are five main techniques of external therapy, namely bloodletting, which extract the impure blood produced by disease of heat; moxibustion, which debilitates cold diseases, medicinal compresses, fomentation, massage with ointment, and minor surgery. Among these, the former three are the mild treatment and the latter three the severe ones because of the pain the patient has to suffer during the whole procedure.
