  • This study tries to analyze the influence of IIT's educational system on the Jong Soung Kimm's Architecture. Architect Kimm was the first student in Korea who gained admission to the IIT and was directly learned from Mies van der Rohe. At IIT, he completed a university course from 1956 to 1961, and finished a degree of master under the direction of Professor Myron Goldsmith in 1964. After the graduation, he entered Mies's office and became the professeur of IIT from 1966 to 1978. In consideration with these facts, it is no exaggeration to say that Kimm's architecture was formed by the IIT's educational system and Mies's architectural principles. According to the synopsis of the 5-year curriculum 1944-45, the object of architectural work in IIT is the clarification of : 1)the structure as an architectural factor, its possibilities and limitations 2) space as an architectural problem 3) proportion as a means of architectural expression 4) the expression value of materials 5) the application of these principles by means of free creative work. Architect Kimm's works designed in Korea reflect well these objectives. But Kimm also knew well the problems of IIT's educational system. After the retirement of Mies, IIT's educational system had the tendency to overstress the technology of structure and simplify the complexity of Miesian architectural principles. In opposition to this tendency, architect Kimm continued to keep the spacial and formal subtlety which possess the Mies' original architecture. This shows very well the future direction of Kimm's architectural activities.

  • This paper attempts to interpret the meaning of Mies van der Rohe's famous aphorism that "less is more" in terms of space. From his assertion that the art of building is the spatial execution of spiritual decisions, one can presume that his art of building was revealed through his spatial execution consciously guided by creative principles. One of his spatial principles was less is more a representative motto for the creation of sparsely furnished space with few objects and little perceptible architecture. After his awareness of an open plan, Mies intended to create less architecture by designing a minimal form of structural frames and maximum openness of open plans and glazed walls. This study posits that Mies created more potential space, for which he intended his open plans and neutral frames to be viewed as less. His building was designed to serve as the background of works of art and the changing nature outside so restrained its own existential voice in favor of the achievement of total harmony.

  • This research examines pioneering works of two representative Western modern architects which played a significant role in constructing modernity in the early 20th century: Frank Lloyd Wright's Florida Southern College and Ludwig Mies van der Rohe's Illinois Institute of Technology. These two campuses were constructed and developed at the similar period by two named architects, and these were considered the collections of iconic modern buildings in the States. However, design approaches and principles of these buildings were totally opposite ways: Frank Lloyd Wright's Florida Southern College was in the roof of organic architecture drawn from a great Chinese sage, Laotze, which have more five hundred years history. On the other hand, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe's Illinois Institute of Technology was well embodied the International Style which originated from European tradition in the early 20th century, and Mies was one of the leaders of the International Style. These different approaches could be understood in the discussion of the meaning of the Greek concept of paradoxa which was mentioned by a German philosopher Martin Heidegger. Comparing the paradoxical gestures of these two campuses can reveal the truth of each campus master plans and expand the discourse of modern architectures.

  • Many theorists acknowledge that Modern architecture denied the architect's crafty gesture for the sake of pure formal and compositional status of a building. As well, modern technology in construction has been prevailing as the sole support for modern architecture. But there exists architects who proposed a dialectic development of traditional and modern techniques. This thought was prominent in Germanic circle where technological development was in advance. Throughout $20^{th}$ century, the works of Adolf Loos, Mies Van der Rohe, and Peter Zumthor are representatives in each period. A common point begins from their apprenticeships as craftsmen: Loos and Mies as stonemasons, Zumthor as a cabinetmaker. More than this fact, their craftsmanship is embedded in their works and express creativity of architects. While mass production system raises non-participatory practice that merely require assemblage of products, the adjusted techniques with craftsmanship brings forth a participatory practice that does not limit the creativity of architects.

  • This study aims to compare the Malevich's 'non-objectivity' and Mies van der Rohe's 'almost nothing'. K. Malevich who, as a painter, was a pioneer of abstract art and an initiator of Suprematism, was sought an ultimate value of art to non objective world, namely non of consciousness or a world of a non-being, In the same way, 'Mies van der Rohe was also sought for architectural space of non objectivity, as non of objective, being introduced 'less is more' or 'almost nothing' to architectural space.

  • The cubist collagists proposed radically different ideas about the nature of order, and about the nature of artistic space. The collage substitutes an order which is constructed on relationships for the more rigid order of traditional art. Collage presents new theories of communication with the viewer, of relationships and of signs. This paper is an investigation of these ideas and how they have been applied to Mies Van der Rohe's making of architecture: Barcelona Pavilion and Tugendhat house. Collage in Mies' works has been executed in a limited manner. In Mies' works, one can begin to recognize some basic traits of collage. Textures, forms, and fragments begin to interact with each other and exploit those principles of contrast and juxtaposition that give collage a value as an expressive medium. Many of the formal aspects of collage are readily apparent in much of the work which we see around use today, but we should look at the attitudes and beliefs upon which collage is built for a further understanding of how its principles can be applied.

  • It was early in the $20^{th}$ century when the space was begun to say through the mutual circumstances of form and contents. Adrian Forty explained that the characteristics of space can be divided into three steps by the period: a space of enclosure, a space as continuum and a space as an extension of the body. And there is common condition that all three spaces are accompanied by the form. In the new thinking of architectural form in terms of text in modern society, architecture becomes to more complex to understanding. Saying that there is nothing outside text (Il n'y a rien en dehors du text.) in the world, Jacques Derrida insisted the world to be texted and not to be special centrality, where can be existed by difference and delay its meaning. Text is the structural meaning (sign), not a metaphorical one (symbol). Without the symbol, the architecture can be recognized as text with signing to the form. For that, there is a question how can be explained the space in terms of text extracting the meaning and the symbol. Absolutely not intended by Mies van der Rohe, but in his works of houses and pavilion, its characteristics and traces of text can be seen. If it is possible to analyse his works in the textual view, space of Mies will be found in the same direction of text. And it will be an important opportunity to re-evaluate the space of Mies works standing in the heart of Modern Architecture.

  • Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, one of the influential modernist architects in early 20th century, had an great effort to found the modern architecture through various kinds of works. Conceptually he tried to develop the trans-temporal architecture language by involving a reintegration of countermanding principles in both ideas and practices for designing buildings. The model for his striving to find such a synthesis or a dynamic form was the neo-classicism of K. F Schinkel, inasmuch as Schinkel endeavored to combine the classical rationalistic order with the creative act of construction and to make these two melt into his age. In the same horizon with that Mies van der Rohe attempted to express the industrialized civilization of his time as a given fact, though this phenomenal substance was the only authentic form that has been conceivable to the people. For him the modern technology was regarded as the manifestation of rationalistic transcendency, which can be interpreted always consequentially. Here In this context this study is purposed to consider through the analysis of the ground ideas of architecture and the designed chairs, how commensurable the tectonic value (in the architecture) that is constantly evident in his works and the various autonomous drives toward deformalization (in the furniture design) that is concerned with his interest for cultural situation and materiality of form are with each other. And then it will be tried to prove, that on the ground of the trans-temporal achitecture language the furniture design of Mies van der Rohe, which emphasizes curves as individual forms, could correspond to his architecture that lays priority to space and construction

  • In this study, the 163 edible plants that are permitted as foods by the Korea Food and Drug Administration, were extracted in methanol. Following extration, their macrophage immunostimulating effects (MIE) were examined using a macrophage from BALB/C mice at four different concentrations of plant extract, such as $10\;{\mu}g/mL$, $100\;{\mu}g/mL$, $500\;{\mu}g/mL$, and $1,000\;{\mu}g/mL$, in vivo. Forty-two samples significantly showed MIEs. Among them, 20 samples had increased MIEs at higher than 10%, as compared to the negative control group. Nineteen samples had increased MIEs at two of the plant extract concentrations, and 3 samples [Allium schoenoprasmum (chive), Aralia elata (fatsia), Capsosiphon fulvescens (seaweed fulvescens)] had increased MIEs at three of the concentration conditions. In particular, Dioscorea batatas (yam) showed MIEs at all concentrations, as well as slightly higher MIEs as compared to the positive control group. Therefore, Dioscorea batatas was evaluated to be an excellent MIE.
