  • Since returning to power in 2012, the second Abe administration has pressured Japanese mainstream media in various ways, from creating the Secrecy Act to forming close relationships with media executives and promoting anti-journalism voices on social media. This article focuses on the growth of a jingoist group called the 'Net-rightists' ('Neto-uyo' in the Japanese abbreviation) on the Internet, which has been supporting the right-wing government and amplifying its historical revisionist views of Japanese colonialism. These heavy Internet users deny Japan's war crimes against neighboring Asian countries and disseminate fake news about the past, which justifies Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's hostile diplomatic policies against South Korea and China. Over the past years, the rightist online discourses have become powerful to such an extent that the editorials of major newspapers and TV reports shifted to more nationalist tones. Who are the Neto-uyo? Why have they emerged from the online world and proliferated to the offline world? Two significant characteristics of new media are discussed to analyze their successful media manipulation: cultural transcoding and perpetual rewriting of collective memories. These characteristics have resulted in constructing and reinforcing the data loops of the 'Daily Us' versus Them, technologically raising current diplomatic tensions in East Asia.

  • Two pieces of comb-shaped jewelry which are made of animal bones were discovered in Daeseong-dong tomb No.88 in Gimhae. Foreign material was removed from the surface of the objects using ethanol and various small instruments. Fractures or cracks were repaired using cellulose-type synthetic resin and epoxy resin. Acrylic paint was applied repaired areas to match the color and finished conservation treatment. The two comb-shaped accessories, although differing in number of teeth and thickness, were produced by using the same method. A series of fine bone pieces, shaped like comb teeth, are placed between two long bones, assuming animal ulnas, and are fastened together by tying silk thread around them several times, then by placing a coat of lacquer.

  • Sensitized photolysis of two onium borates (diphenyliodoium and dimethylphenacylsulfonium tetrakis(pentafluorophenyl)borate, 1a and 2a , respectively) and cationic photopolymerization of an epoxy monomer by the photolysis were investigate. The onium borates were sensitized by the excited singlet of the athracenes(non-substituted, 9-methyl-and 9, 10-dimethylanthracene) and generated acid by decomposing teemselves. The quantum yields of photobleaching of the anthracenes($\Phi$-AH) and acid generatiion (øacid) by the onium borates were the same order as those of the corresponding onium salts in aerated solutions (methanol and acetoitrile) and in argon(Ar) saturated acetonitrile. However, in the photolysis of the iodonium borates 1a in Ar saturated MeOH , øacid was much higher than the corresponding ø-AH. The acid generated by the photolysis of the onium borates initiated cationic polymerization of an epoxy monomer. The values of both rate of polymerization (Rp) and degree of conversion on the photopolymerization for the iodonium borated 1a were higher than those of the sulfoium borate 2a. In the photopolymerization for the iodonium borate 1a, both the Rp value and the degree of conversinio increased upon the addition of glycerol as a hydrogen donor. It is suggested that the increase of both values may be caused with the increase of øacid by addition of glycerol.

  • A cationic water soluble porphyrin (5,10,15,20-tetrakis (l-methyl-pyridinium-4-yl)porphyrin, $H_2tmpyp^{4+}$) and its metalloporphyrins (MP) were easily extracted into acetonitrile separated by addition of sodium chloride ($4mol\;dm^{-3}$) in the presence of sodium perchlorate, where M denotes $Zn^{2+}$, $Cu^{2+}$, $Co^{3+}$, $Fe^{3+}$, and $Mn^{3+}$ and $P^{2-}$ is porphyrinate ion. The extracted ion-pair complexes were completely dissociated to $[MP(ClO_4)_3]^+$, and $[MP(ClO_4)_2]^{2+}$. The extraction and the dissociation constants were determined by taking into account of the partition constant of sodium perchlorate ($K_D=1.82{\pm}0.01$). The chemical properties of the separated acetonitrile phase as $E_{T(30)}$ and $D_{II,I}$ were determined and compared with other water miscible solvents (acetone, actonitrile, 1,4-dioxane, tetrahydrofuran, 1-propanol and 2-propanol). Furthermore, a sensitive and selective method was proposed for the determination of a subnanogram amount of copper(II) in natural water samples by using the present salting-out method and the porphyrins.

  • Plate armour is an important cultural property that reflects the ancient weaponry and the manufacturing technology of ironware as they are. Among the kinds of iron armour, horizontal plate armour has been very rarely excavated, and there are a few artifacts in their unimpaired shape like the plate armour excavated from Mangisanseong. This report reviews the manufacturing technology of ancient plate armour through its radiograph using appliable nondestructive irradiation and scientific conservation treatment. The seven-tiered plate armour excavated from Mangisanseong has ring hinge to open and shut the right side neck guard. The readout result of radiograph proved iron safety guard of Godaepan (a plate that links neck plate and horizontal plate) and leather safety guard of the right armpit with plate overlap and perforation interval; perforations that seem to have linked shoulder strap on wearing the armour are also observed. In particular, it is identified that the perforation and riveting technique avoided the connection of more than three plates with a rivet. This is an important material to illustrate the best use of function of plate armour overcoming its limit.

  • The direction of scientific researches on tree improvement and forest management in several universities and research institutes in Japan can be summarized as follows: They put a great emphasis on sugi, Cryptomeria japonica and cypress, Chamaecyparus oblusa which are two major conifer species largerly planted in the Japanese forestry. In the research of sugi, a great concern has been made in evaluating inheritance of forest tree, quantitative characters and genetic parameter of growth, and in breeding for resistance to diseases and insects and to all the natural calamities. Interaction between environmental conditions and genetic nature of tree can be concerned factors in relation with forest damage, together with silvicultural conditions and pest infestation. Selfing hybrids of $F_1$ made from crossing twisted-leaf sugi, defomity leaf type and midori sugi, normal leaf type segregated the normal needle, twisted needle, green leaf and albino leaf type. It seemed that separation of many defomity individuals can be governed by two dominant complementary genes and from the near loci of which it was detected lethal genes. 52% of Japanese forestry is occupied by the small forest landowners like Korean forestry. This made difficulty for forest improvement such as progressive afforestation and for capital accumulation form forestry. The Forest Corporation was established at first in 1959 to aming at productive forestry structure and forest management, and afforestation. For these purpose, 35 Forest Corporations are at moment operating throughout Japan. However, investment in forestry business becomes less attractive since the wage in forest production duction increased in higher trend. than timber price. Therefore, an artifical afforestation becomes yearly decreased. At present. the self-sufficient rate of timber production in Japan is about 35%, and so a great effort is being made to increase self-sufficient rate of timber production.

  • This study presents an investigation into the conservation process of an iron dagger and scabbard, which are a lacquered scabbard and a dagger inserted in it, excavated in the Daho-ri relic of Changwon by Gimhae National Museum. The bronze dagger whose condition was poor due to corrosion was coated with Incralac, an intensifier, to reveal the surface patterns through a microscope. The lacquered scabbard was removed of foreign substances on the surface and coated with HPC 2%(in water) to protect the film. Applied onto the surface from which foreign substances were removed was Caparol Binder 5%(in water) two to three times to form a protective film and then faced with Korean paper. Once it was fixed in a polyurethane foam in a stable manner, it was turned over to receive the same process on the back. Three layers of Korean paper were attached to the back of the scabbard to support the thin artifact. HPC 2%(in water), which was applied to the scabbard, was also applied to the iron dagger inside for cementing effect. After all the processes were completed, the artifact was put in a transparent acrylic box for future display.

  • This paper presents an archaeological interpretation of the results of conservation treatment and scientific analysis of the ancient Chinese bronze coin known as Huo Quan(貨泉) coins excavated from Tomb No. 4 at the Madeung Archaeological Site in Heukcheon-ri, Haenam. Huo Quan coins were issued in China by Wang Mang(王莽) when he founded the short-lived Xin(新) Dynasty and were used in the Samhan(三韓) period in Korea. A total of thirteen Huo Quan coins were excavated from the Madeung Archeological Site with some coins fused to each other. They were classified as clusters A, B, and C. On a coin from the B cluster the classical Chinese characters "貨泉" are visible to the naked eye, but no characters are visually identifiable in the other coins. For conservation treatment, foreign substances attached to the surfaces of the coins were removed, weak materials were reinforced with protective coatings, and fragments were reattached to the main bodies of the coins. Next, Nano CT scanning was conducted to identify the exact number of coins within the clusters and examine the surface condition of the coins. It revealed the inscription "貨泉" on twelve out of thirteen coins. In addition to these coins excavated from Heukcheon-ri, a number of coins were excavated from a tomb in Bokryong-dong, Gwangju. This necessitates an investigation into the possible development of a monetary economy in this region.

  • Objective: The effect of environmental enrichment on the behaviour of piglets in the nursery phase was evaluated. Methods: A total of 450 hybrid pigs (21 day old), including both females and uncastrated males, weighing approximately 6 kg, were distributed in a completely randomised design with 3 treatments and 3 replicates of 50 animals each. The treatments were: i) pen without environmental enrichment (control), ii) treatment consisting of continuous environmental enrichment (CEE) with rubber balls throughout the experimental period, and iii) treatment consisting of environmental enrichment with washed balls (EEWB) during the whole experimental period which were removed daily for washing. For the behavioural evaluation, 10 animals were randomly selected per replicate. The behavioural assessments were performed once a week, from 8 am to 6 pm, using images captured with a video camera. The data were submitted to non-parametric analyses, the means were compared using the Bonferroni test, and Person's correlations were also calculated. Results: A statistical difference (p = 0.001) was observed in the B5 (playful) behaviour; the animals in the EEWB treatment group had a higher frequency of this behaviour than animals in the control treatment group. The animals in the control group showed a higher frequency of B7 behaviour (lying down) (p = 0.026) than those in the EEWB and CEE treatment groups. The animals in the control group had a higher frequency of the B9 (belly nosing) behaviour than those in the EEWB group (p = 0.015). There was a tendency towards a higher frequency of behaviour B3 (walking in the pen) (p = 0.067) when the animals received the control treatment than treatments EEWB or CEE. Conclusion: The use of an enriching object improved the animal welfare and altered the correlation between the evaluated behaviours compared to the animals that did not have environmental enrichment.

  • This experiment was carried out to compare the varietal differences of winter hardiness based on the values of winter hardiness index(W1) and the dry weight of plant per relative tiller appearance rate (DWIRTAR), and the evaluate the method of measurements for winter hardiness in 17 orchardgrass varieties grown under mountainous area of Tackwalyon, Kangwon-do. Korea. The results were summarized as follows: 1. Seedling vigours(SV) of plant before wintering indicated highly significant negative correlation with the dry weight of 1st cutting(DW) and the dry weight of plant per relative tiller appearance rates (DWIRTAR). 2. The dry weight of 1st cutting(DW) indicated significant positive correlations with the number of tillers per plant(NT). dry weight of a tiller(WT), lield survival rate(SR). heading rate(HR) and the dry weight of heading tillers(HDW). 3. Correlation coefficients of the dry weight of 1st cutting(DW) with winter hardiness index(W1) was 0.499(p<0.05), and the dry weight of plant per relative tiller appearance rates(DW/RTAR) was 0.895(p<0.001), respectively. 4. Between the winter hardiness index(W1) and field survival rate(SR) showed highly significant positive correlation(p<0.001). And, the dry weight of plant per relative tiller appearance rates(DW/RTAR) showed highly significant positive correlation(p<0.001) with the dry weight of a tiller(WT) and the dry weight of heading tillers(HDW). 5. The varieties were classified into 2 groups by winter hardiness index(W1). The 13 varieties of Hallmark. lna, Rancho, Amba, Filippa, Sparta, Hokuto, Kitamidori, Okamidori, Wasemidori, Shinyo, Potomac and Summer-green belong to the group of W1)100, and 4 varieties of Able, Juno, Napier and Jesper belong to the group of WI(100, respectively. 6. And, also classified into 2 groups by the dry weight of plant per relative tiller appearance rates (DWIRTAR). The 4 varieties of Amba, Okamidori, Wasemidori and Summer-green belong to the group of DW1RTAR)l.O and 13 varieties of Able, Hallmark, Ina, Juno, Napier, Rancho, Filippa. Jesper, Sparta, Hokuto, Kitamidori, Shinyo and Potomac belong to the group of DW/RTAR(1.0, respectively. The variety with DW/RTAR)I.O is belong to the group of high potential winter hardiness, and also obtained a high values over the 100 of winter hardiness index(W1). 7. The dry weight of plant per relative tiller appearance rates(DW/RTAR) may be a very useful ecological character to evaluate the potential winter hardiness of orchardgrass varieties grown under mountainous area of Taekwalyon(altitudinal ranges about 800m).
