  • The purpose of this study is to verify learning components to be taught in each grade of middle schools, to propose hierarchical structures on algorithm content, and to resolve overlapping across related subjects. In order to verify learning components, four criteria were proposed. To evaluate practical application, they were implemented into The Proposal of Curriculum Revision on Computer Education in Middle School on MPE website. It was found that there was content overlapping between 'problem solving methods and procedures' in the middle school Informatics Curriculum and 'regulation and problem solving' in the Elementary Mathematics Curriculum. So it is needed to find a way to differentiate the contents of 'problem solving methods and procedures' from the other related subjects.

  • Purpose: To compare differences in BMI, body weight perception and satisfaction, and eating behavior by gender among middle school students. Methods: From 19 middle schools in W city four classes in two middle schools were selected by cluster sampling with multi-stage sampling. A structured questionnaire was answered by 143 adolescents. Results: Differences in BMI between boys and girls were significant (x$^2$=13.15, p=.00l). Boys reported higher ideal body weight than girls (t=6.33, p<.000l), and discrepancy between ideal body weight and body weight perception in girls was significantly greater than in boys(t=-5.0l, p<.0001). There was no significant gender difference in body weight perception but more boys were satisfied with their body weight(t=-4.48, p<.0001). Comparison of eating behavior showed that girls reported high scores in disinhibition (t=-2.29, p<.05) and hunger (t=-2.81, p<.01), while boys reported higher scores in cognitive restraints (t=3.22, p<.01). Conclusion: Interventions to help girls improve body image and satisfaction with body image are crucial. In order to establish proper diet habits and balanced nutritional status for adolescents, educational interventions should address characteristics of eating behaviors.

  • Despite a lot of efforts, school violence is getting severe nowadays and especially it seems remarkably occurring among middle school students. Many studies show that most school violence occur in classrooms where the students spend most of their time in studying and socializing for their everyday life. The purpose of this study is to identify design elements of middle school classroom and to suggest some design plans for preventing school violence, in the point of view of CPTED. For this objective, six middle schools were selected from Gangseo-gu, Seoul, and the questionnaire and survey were conducted to identify the status of school violence and the physical classroom environment in each schools. An analysis was carried using SPSS to identify the correlation between the school violence and the physical environmental design elements. The results are as follows : although each selected school shows different status of school violence and the physical environment in classrooms, commonly the occurrence and the fear of violence are related to the classroom environment. Therefore, In order to plan classroom for preventing school violence, 'the proper size of classroom avoiding overcrowd', 'elevation design for the sense of belonging and territoriality', 'improvement of deteriorated environment' should be considered for reduce the causes of violence. And 'maximization of natural surveillance from hallway', 'accessibility of teacher' should be considered for rapid management of violence.

  • Purpose : This study identified the patterns of smoking of students attending middle schools and high schools, and analyzed its related health risk behaviors. Methods: The data was based on the survey of 1,517 middle students and 911 high students residing in Kyung-Gi district. Results: The current smoking rates of male and female middle students are 5.3%, and 3.1% respectively. The rates of experiences in smoking are 21.4% and 16.0%(male/female). The current smoking rates of male and female high students are 17.9% and 8.5%, whereas the rates of experiences in smoking are 34.2% and 23.3% respectively. On the other hands, 14.1% of middle students and 12.0% of high students were exposed to smoking for at least 2 hours per day. The majority of middle and high school smokers started smoking when they were in middle or high school. And the most popular places to smoke were children's playgrounds, public open area., parks, and so on. Whether having a smoker as a friend or not and students' own perception towards smoking influenced the decisions to smoke for middle and high students. Both middle and high students, regardless of their gender, who have higher rates of drinking experiences and the hours of computer usage were found to have higher rates of smoking experiences. Meanwhile, the sleeping hours is in reverse proportion to the rate of smoking experiences. There was statistically significant difference in smoking experiences related to the degree of obesity only in the female high students: underweight and overweight students showed higher rates of smoking experiences than those falling in the normal weight range. Conclusion: For the effective prevention of adolescence smoking, it is necessary to adopt a comprehensive approach, which classifies the target population according to their age and sex and cover all health risk behaviors.
