  • Electrical contact property of the W-20wt%Cu contact materials manufactured by liquid phase sintering of nanocomposite W-Cu powders was investigated and discussed in terms of microstructural development during performance test. Nanocomposite powders were prepared by hydrogen reduction of ball milled W-Cu oxide mixture. They underwent complete densification and microstructural homogenization during liquid phase sintering. As a consequence, the W-Cu contacts produced from nanocomposite powders showed superior contact property of lower arc erosion and stable contact resistance. This might be mostly due to the fact that the arc erosion by evaporation of Cu liquid droplets and surface cracking remarkably became weakened. It is concluded that the improvement of anti-arc erosion of the composite specimen is basically attributed to microstructural homogeneity.

  • The microstructure of Ni-YSZ composite as an anode of SOFC was investigated as a function of Ni content(10-70 vol%) in order to examine the correlation between microstructural-and electrical property. Image analysis based on quantitative microscopy theory was performed to quantify the microstructural property. We could get the informations about the size and distribution, contiguity and interfacial area of each phase or between the phases from the image analysis. According to the image analysis, contiguity between the same phae was mainly dependent on the amount of the phase while the contiguity between different phases was additionally influenced by the microstructural changes, especailly by the coarsening of the Ni phase. The whole length of pores perimeter was increased as Ni content increased, which indicated the overall microstructural evolution was mostly related with the coarsening of Ni phase. Ni-Ni interfacial area was also gradually increased as Ni content increased but controlled by pore phase at low Ni content region and by YSZ phase at intermediate Ni content region. These quantified microstructural properties were used to characterize the electrical properties of Ni-YSZ composite.

  • The alumina dispersion-strengthened (DS) C15715 Cu alloy fabricated by a powder metallurgy route was annealed at temperatures ranging from $800^{\circ}C\;to\;1000^{\circ}C$ in the air and in vacuum. The effect of the annealing on microstructural stability and room-temperature mechanical properties of the alloy was investigated. The microstructure of the cold rolled OS alloy remained stable until the annealing at $900^{\circ}C$ in the air and in vacuum. No recrystallization of original grains occurred, but the dislocation density decreased and newly formed subgrains were observed. The alloy annealed at $1000^{\circ}C$ in the air experienced recrystallization and grain growth took place, however annealing in vacuum at $1000^{\circ}C$ did not cause the microstructural change. The mechanical property of the alloy was changed slightly with the annealing if the microstructure remained stable. However, the strength of the specimen that was recrystallized decreased drastically.

  • The effect of chemical composition on the microstructural change and tensile property in TRIP-assisted steels with different chemical composition was investigated by using SEM, TEM, XRD and UTM. As a result of microscopic observation, the morphology of retained austenite could be identified as two types; a granular type in a steel containing higher Si and a film type in a steel having higher C. For the case of higher C-containing steel with a tensile strength of 860 MPa and a total elongation of 38%, film-typed retained austenite could be observed between lath bainitic ferrite. Actually, metastable retained austenite was a requisite for the good formability, which means that chemical composition plays a significant role in the microstructure and tensile property of TRIP-assisted steels. With respect to tensile property, the steels containing suitable Si and Mn, respectively, showed a typical TRIP effect in stress-strain curve, while a steel containing higher Mn content exhibited the similar behavior shown in dual phase steel.

  • A boiler system transforms water to pressured supercritical steam which drives the running of the turbine to rotate in the generator to produce electricity in power plants. Materials for building the tube system face challenges from high temperature creep damage, thermal fatigue/expansion, fireside and steam corrosion, etc. A database on the creep resistance strength and steam oxidation of the materials is important to the long-term reliable operation of the boiler system. Generally, the ferritic steels, i.e., grade 1, grade 2, grade 9, and X20, are extensively used as the superheater (SH) and reheater (RH) in supercritical (SC) and ultra supercritcal (USC) power plants. Currently, advanced austenitic steel, such as TP347H (FG), Super304H and HR3C, are beginning to replace the traditional ferritic steels as they allow an increase in steam temperature to meet the demands for increased plant efficiency. The purpose of this paper is to provide the state-of-the-art knowledge on boiler tube materials, including the strengthening, metallurgy, property/microstructural degradation, oxidation, and oxidation property improvement and then describe the modern microstructural characterization methods to assess and control the properties of these alloys. The paper covers the limited experience and experiment results with the alloys and presents important information on microstructural strengthening, degradation, and oxidation mechanisms.

  • We investigated the corrosion behavior of commercially pure cold working processed (CP)-Ti with coarse-grained (CG) microstructure heat-treated at $400^{\circ}C$ and $600^{\circ}C$, respectively. It is observed that corrosion resistance of as-received CP-Ti heat-treated at $400^{\circ}C$, at which recrystallization proceeds, is largely improved. Interestingly, the mechanical property of CP-Ti sample at $400^{\circ}C$ was scarcely deteriorated. It is attributed to the decrease of the defects such as strain variance and dislocation density. On the other hand, the annealing treatment at $600^{\circ}C$ of CP-Ti plate causes to grain growth with the noticeable reduction of mechanical property. Hence, it is considered that defect density such as strain and dislocation density is important microstructural parameter for the improvement of corrosion resistance. The introduction of proper annealing treatment can help to improve corrosion resistance without scarifying mechanical property of CP-Ti.

  • In the periodic surveillance material test for the spacer component of fuel channel assembly in CANDU, a microstructural characterization analysis is required in addition to the mechanical property evaluation test. In this study, detailed microstructure analysis and simple mechanical property evaluation of archive spacer parts were conducted to indirectly support the surveillance test and assist in the study of spacer material degradation. We investigated the microstructural characteristics of the spacer garter spring coil through comparative analysis with the plate material. The main microstructure characteristics of the garter spring coil X-750 are represented by the fine grain size distribution, the ordering phase distribution developed inside the matrix, the high dislocation density inside the grains, and the arrangement of coarse carbides. In addition, the yield strength of the garter spring coil X-750 was indirectly evaluated to be approximately 1 GPa. We also established an analytical method to elucidate the microstructural evolution of the radioactive spacer garter spring coil X-750 based on Canadian research experiences. Finally, we confirmed the measurement technique for helium bubble formation through TEM examination on the helium implanted X-750 material.

  • Artificial aging was performed to simulate the microstructural degradation in 2.25CrMo steel arising from long time exposure at $540^{\circ}C$. The carbide morphologies were classified as acicular, pipe and globular type, and the number of carbides per unit area was measured for each type of carbides. The fine acicular carbides were found to diminish drastically in the initial stage of aging. An attempt was made to evaluate the microstructural degradation in artificially aging heat treated 2.25CrMo steel by the magnetic property measurements such as saturation magnetization, coercivity and remanence. The saturation magnetization showed no distinct trend with aging time. However, the coercivity and remanence were observed to decrease rapidly in initial 920 hours of aging time and then decrease slowly afterwards.

  • Fine ceramics have high strength, excellent wear resistance, chemical stability and high strength at high temperature and are receiving attention in various fields such as construction, engineering, aerospace and marine science. Finish machining process is required to obtain precise ceramics components because sintering process necessary for obtaining high strength and high quality ceramics reduces the dimensions of components and precision of shape. But high strength and brittleness of ceramics materials cause difficulty in processing. So a process for obtaining wanted dimensions is studying using high temperature which makes ceramics softened and thermal affected recently. Laser beam is a very useful optical device for these kinds of processes. Laser process such as laser cutting, laser machining, laser heat treatment and laser-assisted machining(LAM) is researching to manufacture practical ceramics components using intense laser source which can cause local softening and damage of workpiece. In this paper, microstructural and mechanical properties of silicon nitride heated are studied as a basic study for researching of ceramics process by laser beam. The surface variation of HIP and SSN-silicon nitride was analyzed with SEM and EDS. A processing at $1,300^{\circ}C$ or above causes N element to combine into $N_2$ gas and the gas busts from surface. These phenomena make bloat, craters and heat defects on the surface of silicon nitride. Also, oxygen content is largely increased to oxidize the surface and it causes changing of phases and reducing of hardness of surface.
