The present research is an experimental study of subcooled flow boiling behavior using flat, microporousenhanced square heater surfaces in pure FC-72. Two $1-cm^{2}$ copper surfaces, one highly polished (plain) and one microporous coated, were flush-mounted into a 12.7 mm square, horizontal flow channel. Testing was performed for fluid velocities ranging from 0.5 to 4 m/s (Reynolds numbers from 18,700 to 174,500) and pure subcooling levels from 4 to 20 K. Results showed both surfaces' nucleate flow boiling curves collapsed to one line showing insensitivity to fluid velocity and subcooling. The log-log slope of the microporous surface nucleate boiling curves was lower than the plain surface due to the conductive thermal resistance of the microporous coating layer. Both, increased fluid velocity and subcooling, increase the CHF values for both surfaces, however, the already enhanced boiling characteristics of the microporous coating appear dominant and require higher fluid velocities to provide additional enhancement of CHF to the microporous surface.
Breathable waterproof PET fabrics were prepared by the UV coating of UV-curable polyurethaneacrylate(PUA) formulation mixed with polyethyleneglycol(PEG) as a water soluble pore former. The dispersed PEG in the UV-cured coating was extracted by warm water, which can generate individual circular pores uniformly distributed all over the coating instead of pore channels. Accordingly the moisture permeability of the microporously coated fabrics increased substantially with increasing PEG addition without significant reduction of hydrostatic pressure. Also the silicone diacrylate addition in the formulation was beneficial in increasing the hydrostatic pressure. The UV-based microporous coating can be an alternative to conventional thermal curing of solventborne polyurethane coating owing to the enhanced environment friendliness and energy saving.

The flow boiling heat transfer of water was experimentally investigated on plain and sintered microporous surfaces in a mini-channel. The effects of microporous coating on flow boiling heat transfer of subcooled water were investigated in a 300 mm long mini-channel with a cross section of $20{\times}10mm^2$. The test section has sufficiently long entrance length of 300 mm which provides a fully-developed flow before the channel inlet. The bottom side of the channel was heated by a copper block assembled with a high-density cartridge heater and other sides of the channel were insulated. The microporous surface was fabricated by sintering copper particles with the average particle size of $50{\mu}m$ on the top side of the copper block. Heat transfer measurement was conducted at the mass flux of $208kg/m^2s$ and the heat flux up to $500kW/m^2$. Microporous coated surface showed an earlier boiling incipience compared with plain surface regardless of the mass flux. Microporous coating were significantly attributed to local wall temperature and local heat transfer coefficient for flow boiling.

Pool boiling heat transfer of a copper microporous coating was experimentally studied in borated water with a concentration of boric acid from 0.0 to 5.0 vol percent (vol%) to determine the effect of boric acid on boiling heat transfer in water. A high-temperature, thermally conductive microporous coating (HTCMC) was created by sintering copper powder with an average particle size of 67 ㎛ onto a 1 cm × 1 cm plain copper surface with a coating thickness of ~300 ㎛ within a furnace in a vacuum environment. The tests showed that the nucleate boiling heat transfer coefficient (NBHT) of HTCMC became slightly less enhanced as the concentration of boric acid increased but the NBHT coefficient values were still significantly higher than those of the plain surface. The critical heat flux (CHF) values from 0 to 1.0 vol% were maintained at ~2,000 kW/㎡, and then, they gradually decreased down to ~1,700 kW/㎡ as the concentration increased further to 5.0 vol%. It is believed that the micro-scale pores of the HTCMC were partially blocked by the high boric acid concentration during the nucleate boiling such that the small bubbles were not effectively created using the HTCMC reentrant cavities as the boric acid concentration increased.

Pool boiling heat transfer of water saturated at atmospheric pressure was investigated experimentally on Cu surfaces with high-temperature, thermally-conductive, microporous coatings (HTCMC). The coatings were created by sintering Cu powders on Cu surfaces in a nitrogen gas environment. A parametric study of the effects of particle size and coating thickness was conducted using three average particle sizes (APSs) of $10{\mu}m$, $25{\mu}m$, and $67{\mu}m$ and various coating thicknesses. It was found that nucleate boiling heat transfer (NBHT) and critical heat flux (CHF) were enhanced significantly for sintered microporous coatings. This is believed to have resulted from the random porous structures that appear to include reentrant type cavities. The maximum NBHT coefficient was measured to be approximately $400kW/m^2k$ with APS $67{\mu}m$ and $296{\mu}m$ coating thicknesses. This value is approximately eight times higher than that of a plain Cu surface. The maximum CHF observed was $2.1MW/m^2$ at APS $67{\mu}m$ and $428{\mu}m$ coating thicknesses, which is approximately double the CHF of a plain Cu surface. The enhancement of NBHT and CHF appeared to increase as the particle size increased in the tested range. However, two larger particle sizes ($25{\mu}m$ and $67{\mu}m$) showed a similar level of enhancement.

In-vessel retention by passive external reactor vessel cooling under severe accident conditions is a viable approach for retention of radioactive core melt within the reactor vessel. In this study, a new and versatile coating technique known as "cold spray" that can readily be applied to operating and advanced reactors was developed to form a microporous coating on the outer surface of a simulated reactor lower head. Quenching experiments were performed under simulated in-vessel retention by passive external reactor vessel cooling conditions using test vessels with and without cold spray coatings. Quantitative measurements show that for all angular locations on the vessel outer surface, the local critical heat flux (CHF) values for the coated vessel were consistently higher than the corresponding CHF values for the bare vessel. However, it was also observed for both coated and uncoated surfaces that the local rate of boiling and local CHF limit vary appreciably along the outer surface of the test vessel. Nonetheless, results of this intriguing study clearly show that the use of cold spray coatings could enhance the local CHF limit for downward-facing boiling by > 88%.
In order to develop a controlled-release oral drug delivery system (DDS) which sustains the plasma acetaminophen (AAP) concentration for a certain period of time, microporous membrane-coated tablets were prepared and evaluated in vitro. Firstly, highly water-soluble core tablet of AAP were prepared with various formulations by wet granulation and compression technique. Then the core tablets were coated with polyvinychloride (PVC) in which micronized sucrose particles were dispersed. Effect of formula compositions of core tablets and coating suspensions on the pharmaceutical characteristics such as drug release kinetics and membrane stability of the coated tablets was investigated in vitro. AAP was released from the coated tablets as a zero-order rate in a pH-independent manner. This independency of AAP release to pH change from 1.2 to 7.2 is favorable for the controlled oral drug delivery, since it will produce a constant drug release in the stomach and intestine regardless of the pH change in the GI tract. Drug release could be extended upto 10 h according to the coating condition. The release rate could be controlled by changing the formula compositions of the core tablets and coating suspensions, coat weight per each tablet, and especially PVC/sucrose ratio and particle size of the sucrose in the coating suspension. The coated tablets prepared in this study had a fairly good pharmaceutical characteristics in vitro, however, overall evaluation of the coated tablet should await in vivo absorption study in man.
The phospholipid-based MPCE(2-Methacryloxyethyl Phosphoryl Chlorine) copolymer was mixed with wet polyurethane for coating of nylon fabrics. The substitution rate of water in coagulation bath with DMF was changed under control of the size of formed hydrophilic microporous cell enable to manufacture excellent breathable, anti-bacterial and moisture control fabrics. Biocompatible property, vapor permeability, hydrostatic pressure, moisture management and anti-bacterial property were investigated for treated nylon fabrics. In result, increased moisture transmission rates, decreased water resistance and outstanding moisture control property could be confirmed by enhanced hydrophilicity of wet-coated nylon fabric with MPCE copolymer.
In order to develop a controlled-release oral drug delivery system (DDS) of theophylline (TP), microporous membrane-coated tablets were prepared and evaluated in vitro and in vivo. Rapidly water-soluble core tablets of TP (300 mg) were prepared by wet granulation and compression technique, Then the core tablets were spray-coated with polyvinylchloride (PVC) in which micronized sucrose particles were dispersed. Effect of formula compositions of coating suspensions on the pharmaceutical characteristics such as membrane strength and dissolution was investigated in vitro. The membranes remained unbroken in pH 1.2 buffer at $37^{\circ}C$ at least for 2 hours after the disintergration test. TP was released from the coated-released tablets at a zero-order rate over 8 hours. The release at pH 1.2 and 4.0 was similar in rate but a little more rapid than that at pH 6.8. The coated tablets were administered to three healthy male volunteers and their saliva profiles of TP were compared with those from the commercial sustained release TP tablets such as Slobid and Asconthin. Saliva TP concentrations from the coated tablets were successfully sustained over 48 hours after the dosing and were comparable to those of the commercial sustained-release tablets. The membrane-coating technique is very simple and does not need any sophisticated equipments. In this respect, the membrane-coated tablets may be superior to the commercial sustained-release tablets and this technique is worth adopting by the pharmaceutical industries.
