Interfacial Properties of Electrodeposited Carbon Fibers Reinforced Epoxy Composites Using Fragmentation Technique and Acoustic Emission

  • Carbon fiber/epoxy composites using electrodeposited monomeric and polymeric coupling agents were compared with the dipping and the untreated cases. Treating conditions such as time, concentration and temperature were optimized. Four-fibers embedded micro-composites were prepared for fragmentation test. Interfacial properties of four-fiber composites with different surface treatments were investigated with simultaneous acoustic emission (AE) monitoring. The microfailure mechanisms occurring from fiber break, matrix and interlayer crackings were examined by AE parameters and an optical microscope. It was found that interfacial shear strength (IFSS) of electrodeposited carbon fibers was much higher than the other cases under dry and wet conditions. Well separated and different-shaped AE groups occurs for the untreated and ED treated case, respectively.

  • Interfacial and electrical properties for the carbon fiber reinforced epoxy-amine terminated (AT) PEI composites were performed using microdroplet test and electrical resistance measurements. As AT PEI content increased, the fracture toughness of epoxy-AT PEI matrix increased, and IFSS was improved due to the improved toughness and energy absorption mechanisms of AT PEI. The microdroplet in the carbon fiber/neat epoxy composite showed brittle microfailure mode. At 15 wt% AT PEI content, ductile microfailure mode appeared because of improved fracture toughness. After curing, the changes of electrical resistance (ΔR) with increasing AT PEI content increased gradually because of thermal shrinkage. The matrix fracture toughness was correlated to IFSS, TEC and electrical resistance. In cyclic strain test, the maximum stress and their slope of the neat epoxy case were higher than those of 15 wt% AT PEI. The results obtained from electrical resistance measurements under curing process and reversible stress and strain were consistent well with matrix toughness properties.

  • Interfacial properties and damage sensing for the carbon fiber/epoxy-amine terminated (AT)-polyetherimide (PEI) composite were performed using microdroplet test and electrical resistance measurements. As AT-PEI content increased, the fracture toughness of epoxy-AT-PEI matrix increased, and interfacial shear strength (IFSS) increased due to the improved fracture toughness by energy absorption mechanisms of AT-PEI phase. The microdroplet in the carbon fiber/neat epoxy composite showed brittle microfailure mode. At 15 phr AT-PEI content ductile microfailure mode appeared because of improved fracture toughness. The result obtained from electrical resistance measurements under curing process and reversible stress/strain was correspondence well with matrix toughness properties.

  • Interfacial and microfailure properties of the modified steel, carbon and glass fibers/cement composites were investigated using electro-pullout test under tensile and compressive tests with acoustic emission (AE). The hand-sanded steel composite exhibited higher interfacial shear strength (IFSS) than the untreated and even neoalkoxy zirconate (Zr) treated steel fiber composites. This might be due to the enhanced mechanical interlocking, compared to possible hydrogen or covalent bonds. During curing process, the contact resistivity decreased rapidly at the initial stage and then showed a level-off. Comparing to the untreated case, the contact resistivity of either Zr-treated or hand-sanded steel fiber composites increased to the infinity at latter stage. The number of AE signals of hand-sanded steel fiber composite was much more than those of the untreated and Zr-treated cases due to many interlayer failure signals. AE waveforms for pullout and frictional signals of the hand-sanded composite are larger than those of the untreated case. For dual matrix composite (DMC), AE energy and waveform under compressive loading were much higher and larger than those under tensile loading, due to brittle but well-enduring ceramic nature against compressive stress. Vertical multicrack exhibits fur glass fiber composite under tensile test, whereas buckling failure appeared under compressive loading. Electro-micromechanical technique with AE can be used as an efficient nondestructive (NDT) method to evaluate the interfacial and microfailure mechanisms for conductive fibers/brittle and nontransparent cement composites.
