Using AP2RC & P1RB micro-silica gels to improve concrete strength and study of resulting contamination

  • Today, application of additives to replace cement in order to improve concrete mixes is widely promoted. Micro-silica is among the best pozzolanic additives which can desirably contribute to the concrete characteristics provided it is used properly. In this paper, the effects of AP2RC and P1RB micro-silica gels on strength characteristics of normal concrete are investigated. Obtained results indicated that the application of these additives not only provided proper workability during construction, but also led to increased tensile, compressive and flexural strength values for the concrete during early ages as well as ultimate ones with the resulting reduction in the porosity lowering permeability of the micro-silica concrete. Furthermore, evaluation of microbial contamination of the mentioned gels showed the resultant contamination level to be within the permitted range.

  • The representative microorganism of autotrophic denitrification using sulfur granule, oxidizes the reduction from S and performs denitrification by reducing $NO_3{^-}-N$ to $N_2$ gas. The sampling of autotrophic denitrification microorganisms has been performed from foreshore sludge, condensed sludge, and active sludge, but the analysis of autotrophic denitrification microbial community characteristics has been lacking. Based on the separation and identification of each sample using the PCR and DGGE methodologies, many types of sulfuric microorganisms and autotrophic denitrification microorganisms were found.

Effect of Irradiated Red Pepper Powder on Kimchi Quality during Fermentation

  • Irradiated red pepper powder (IRPP) was tested for its ability to retard fermentation and to maintain a high quality of Kimchi by the reduction of the initial microbial load. Kimchi containing IRPP at the doses of 0, 5, 10, 15, or 20 kGy was prepared. Quality indices for Kimchi in this study were pH, titratable acidity, reducing sugar content, total microbial count, lactic acid bacterial load, and sensory evaluation. Based on the pH and titratable acidity, the Kimchi with IRPP showed a retarded fermentation until 15 days. The number of the total aerobes and lactic acid bacteria of the Kimchi with IRPP were lower by about 1 log CFU/mL compared to control at day 0, however, the counts increased to 8.5 log CFU/mL after 10 days, which was similar to the control group. Kimchi that was fermented with 5 kGy IRPP was better than control and other treatments in odor and color, whereas the control scored highest in taste. Addition of IRPP showed a limited retardation of Kimchi fermentation without other quality deterioration.

고춧가루 오염 미생물의 제어에서 방사선종별 조사 효과 (Comparison of Irradiation Effect of Different Radiation Types on Decontamination of Microorganisms in Red Pepper Powder)

  • This study investigated the reduction of microbial population and sensory properties in red pepper powders irradiated by gamma ray, electron beam, and X-ray. Populations of total aerobic bacteria and yeast & molds in red pepper powders were decreased by irradiation treatment in a dose-dependent manner. Gamma ray, electron beam, and X-ray at doses above 8 kGy caused 100% inhibition on growth of aerobic bacteria in red pepper powders. Inhibitory activity of X-ray on sterilization of red pepper powders was significantly equal to or higher compared to gamma ray and electron beam. Color and off flavor in red pepper powders were no significant difference among the control and samples irradiated with gamma ray, electron beam, and X-ray. As a result, the gamma ray, electron beam, and X-ray irradiation can be used to sterilize the microbial growth in red pepper powders without quality loss.

  • Synthetic antioxidants have shown adverse effects on consumers. The review, thus, aims to assess the effect of marinating broiler meat with plant leaves-derived antioxidants potential for improving shelf-life and human health. Broiler meat loss and waste due to spoilage is more than three million kg annually, thus, extending shelf-life by reducing initial microbial load and autoxidation is essential. Adding various antioxidants would reduce oxidation of protein and fatty acids improving nutritional shelf-life through synergic interactions. Antioxidant synergetic effects also improves reduction in microbiota proliferation leading to the delayed development of off flavours and deterioration of meat colour. To reduce initial microbial load and autoxidation effects, the inclusion of polyphenols and antioxidants from varying sources by mixing various antioxidants would lead to improved synergic effects.

하계 강화도 갯벌의 혐기성 유기물 분해능 및 황산염 환원력 (Anaerobic Mineralization of Organic Matter and Sulfate Reduction in Summer at Ganghwa Intertidal Flat, Korea)

  • 갯벌이나 연안습지의 생태구조 및 생지화학적 물질 순환을 이해하기 위해서는 유기물 분해기능 평가 및 분해경로에 대한 연구가 필수적으로 진행되어야 함에도 불구하고 국내에는 이에 대한 연구가 거의 없다. 본 논문에서는 하계 강화도 남단의 갯벌에서 미생물에 의한 혐기성 유기물 분해정도를 파악하고, 황산염 환원을 통한 유기물 분해경로의 정량적 중요성을 평가하고자 하였다. 유기물 분해율은 깊이 6 cm 이내에서 $41.9{\sim}89.4mmol\;m^{-2}d^{-1}$의 범위로 나타났으며, 이를 강화도 갯벌의 전체 면적(약 $300km^2$)으로 환산할 경우, 하루에 216 ton의 유기물이 혐기적 과정을 통해 분해되는 것으로 계산되었다. 이러한 결과는 하구갯벌인 강화도 갯벌의 유기물 분해능이 생산력이 높은 염습지의 유기물 분해능에 비해 결코 뒤지지 않음을 보여주는 결과이다. 한편, 인위적으로 유기물(acetate)을 공급하였을 경우 유기물 분해율이 약 2배~5배의 증가율을 나타냈다. 이러한 결과는 미생물의 유기물 분해가 이용 가능한 유기물의 공급 부족에 의해 제한되고 있음을 의미한다. 한편 깊이 6 cm 이내에서 적분한 황산염 환원율은 $20.7{\sim}45.1mmol\;SO{_4}^{2-}m^{-2}d^{-1}$의 범위로 나타났으며, 전체 혐기성 유기물 분해의 대부분을 차지하였다. 이러한 연구결과는 황산염 환원력의 과도한 증대가 향후 갯벌 주변 생태계의 생물 다양성 감소로 이어질 수 있음을 시사하는 것이다.

호기성소화에서 가용화가 슬러지 감량화에 미치는 영향 (Sludge Reduction by Mechanical Solubilization in the Aerobic Digestion)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of mechanical(ball-mill) solubilization of excess sludge especially focused on the TSS(total suspended solid) reduction during the conventional aerobic digestion of sewage sludges including primary and/or excess sludge, HRT was examined at the 10 days and 20 days. According to the results of this study, TSS removal efficiency of solubilized excess sludge was almost two times higher than that of non-solubilized excess sludge. And as the proportion of the primary sludge increased, TSS removal efficiency became worse because primary sludge rarely contained microbial cells which could be easily solubilized physically. It was also proved that by the application of proper solubilization techniques to the excess sludge, HRT for the aerobic digestion could be lessened(above 50%) dramatically keeping the same or better digestion performance. The fact that between primary and excess sludges, only the excess sludge is quite effective in the sludge solubilization and in it's reduction says that excess sludge releasing sources are key-point in the sludge cake reduction field as a source control.

광유도 ROS 발생장치의 세척용수 중 식중독 세균에 대한 불활성화 효과 (Effect of Light-Induced ROS Generation Unit on Inactivation of Foodborne Pathogenic Bacteria in Water)

  • 본 연구는 기존 기초 연구를 통해 효과가 확인된 '광에너지유도 활성산소'를 이용하여 세척용수를 소독할 수 있는 신개념의 순환형 물 소독 시스템에 대해 실증하는 것이다. 다양한 형태의 감광제 이용 광유도 ROS 발생장치를 이용하여 여러 종류의 병원성 세균을 1시간안에 3 log CFU/mL 이상의 밀도를 감소시키는 조건을 탐구하였다. PS-bead이용 광유도 ROS 발생장치의 밀도 감소 효과에 미치는 주요 요인을 분석한 결과, 세균의 종류에 따라 ROS에 대한 밀도 감소효과가 서로 상이 하였다. B. cereus와 P. carotovorum subsp. carotovorum에 대한 밀도 감소효과는 높았으나 대장균 등 식중독 세균들에 대한 밀도 감소 효과는 상대적으로 낮았다. 순환형 물 소독시스템에서 유속은 유속이 빨라질 수록, 초기 세균밀도가 낮을수록 밀도 감소효과가 증가하는 경향을 보였다. bead의 양이 증가함에 따라 밀도 감소 효과는 일부 대상세균에서 지수적으로 증가함을 알 수 있었다. 싱글 유닛 두 개를 연결한 더블원통유닛3280은 B. cereus 나 P. carotovorum subsp. carotovorum에 대한 실험에서 30 분 안에 약 3 log CFU/mL 이상의 균을 완전히 살균할 수 있었다.

미생물 농도에 따르는 Air-Cathode MFC의 전력발생과 유기물질제거 특성 (Characteristics of Power Generation and Organic Matter Removal in Air-Cathode MFC with respect to Microbial Concentration)

  • In order to improve applicability of a microbial fuel cell the laboratory-scaled study has been performed by adopting an air-cathode MFC system with high concentrated anaerobic slugies in this study. The concentrations of microbes are grouped into three types, Type A (TS 1.7%), Type B (TS 1.1%) and Type C (TS 0.51%). The open circuit voltage $(V_{oc})$ characteristics showed that the medium microbes concentration of 1.10% (Type B) kept a constant voltage of 1.0 V for 150 hours, which showed the longest time among three types (Type A and Type C). The discharge charge curves for a closed circuit with $500 \Omega$ also showed that Type B generated a stable discharge voltage of 0.8 V for a longer time as in the open circuit voltage case. This could be explained by the relatively large amount of the attached microbes. Under the $V_{oc}$condition the COD removal efficiency of Type B was found to be low for a long time, but those of Type A and C were found to be high for a short period of time. Therefore, the suspended microbes could decrease the coulombic efficiency. It was concluded that the high $V_{oc}$ was caused by low COD and the $V_{oc}$ became low after the COD removal. The COD reduction resulted in an unstable and low working voltage. From the polarization characteristics Type A was found to show the highest power density of $193\;mW/m^2$ with a fill factor of 0.127 due to the relatively high remaining COD even after the MFC reaction.

유치원 급식으로 이용되는 알팔파 새싹채소의 소독방법에 따른 미생물제어 효과 (Effect of Microbial Control on Alfalfa Sprout Vegetable by Depending on Sanitization Method in Kindergarten Foodservice)

  • Purpose : This study was designed to provide basic data of effective sanitization method of sprout vegetable for microbiological safety. Methods : Sanitization treatments were performed by dipping the sprout into chlorine and vinegar water. Microbial analysis were composed of the total plate count(TPC) and coliform group count(CGC). Result : Among chlorine water sanitization, the microbial reduction was largest in 100ppm chlorine water, and its TPC and coliform group count decreased to 6.01 log CFU/g and 5.06 log CFU/g. The effective dipping time in 100ppm chlorine water treatment was 5.97 log CFU/g and 5.91 log CFU/g for 30min and 60min, in which TPC were below the microbiological safety limits of 6.00 log CFU/g. Coliform group counts were decreased to 5.44, 5.46, 5.42 log CFU/g in the dipping the spouts for 30min, 60min and 90min. As a result of sanitizing alfalfa spout by vinegar water, a microbial counts tended to decrease with increasing concentration and the dipping time. The effective concentration of vinegar water was 2% for TPC(6.00 log CFU/g) and 1% for coliform group count(5.20 log CFU/g). With 1% vinegar water treatment, TPC became below the microbiological safety limits in all samples and in particular, the sample treated for 60min and 90min(4.93, 4.54 log CFU/g). While coliform group counts were decreased to 3.91 log CFU/g in the dipping the sprouts for 90min, those were still beyond the permitted limit. Conclusion : To secure the food safety of food service facilities including kindergarten feeding, it is considered that along with the systematic study of effective disinfection method for microbiological control at the preconditioning level of spout vegetable within the range of secured maleficence to human body, and the study regarding the measures to lower the initial microbiological pollution of spout vegetable.
