A Finite Element Model for Predicting the Microstructural Evolution in Hot Rolling (열간압연시 미세조직 예측을 위한 유한요소 모델)

  • A full three-dimensional thermo-coupled rigid-viscoplastic finite element method and the currently developed microstructural evolution system which includes semi-empirical equations suggested by different research groups were used together to form an integrated system of process and micro- structure simulation of hot rolling. The distribution and time histroy of the momechanical variables such as temperature, strain, strain rate, and time during pass and between passes were obtained from the finite element analysis of multipass hot rolling processes. The distribution of metallurgical variables were calculated on the basis of instantaneous thermomechanical data. For the verification of this method the evolution of microstructure in plate rolling and shape rolling was simulated and their results were compared with the data available in the literature. Consequently, this approach makes it possible to describe the realistic evolution of microstructure by avoiding the use of erroneous average value and can be used in CAE of multipass hot rolling.

  • A finite element-based, integrated process model is presented for a three dimensional, coupled analysis of the thermal and mechanical behavior of type 304 stainless slab during hot charge rolling (HCR) and cold charge rolling (CCR) processes. The validity of the proposed model is examined through comparison with measurements. The susceptibility on micro-crack initiation or propagation due to the thermal stress in these two different process conditions was examined. The model's capability of revealing the effect of diverse process parameters is demonstrated through a series of process simulation.

Elastic Wave Properties of STS316L with Different Rolling Temperature (가공 온도가 다른 STS316L의 탄성파 특성)

  • In this study, austenitic 316L stainless steel was rolled at three different temperatures (100℃, -50℃, -196℃) at five rolling degree (0, 16, 33, 50, 66 and 80%). The rolled specimen was examined for micro structure, and the volume fraction and mechanical properties were evaluated. In particular, the rolling specimen detected the elastic wave generated in tensile and investigated the relationship between the rolling degree and the dominant frequency. As the rolling degree increased, austenite decreased and martensite increased. The volume fraction of martensite more increased at lower temperatures, but increased rapidly at the rolling degree of 50% of all rolling temperature. Tensile strength increased rapidly with the increase of the rolling degree, and was larger at lower temperatures. The elongation decreased sharply to the rolling degree of 33%, but decreased gently thereafter. The dominant frequency highly appeared as the volume fraction of martensite increased, but the dominant frequency was higher at the low temperature rolling temperature. A similar trend was also observed in the relationship between tensile strength and dominant frequency.

Treatment of Hydrochloric acid from Regeneration and Scrubber system of Cold Rolling Mill Plant with Micro-bubble (마이크로버블을 이용한 냉연 산회수설비공정 발생 염화수소 가스 처리)

  • This work has performed to examine the operation status of regeneration and scrubber system of cold rolling mill plant and established the DIWS(Dip Injection Wet Scrubber) system for the removal of hydrochloric acid with micro bubble. When the initial 22.3 ppm of HCl gas was injected into the system, the average exhaust HCl gas was 0.59 ppm with the removal efficiency of 97.3%. Hydrochloric acid was effectively removed by DIWS system. In the long term monitoring for 10 hours by 5 minutes through TMS(Tele Monitoring System), the average exhaust HCl gas was stably kept 0.69 ppm, which was also verified by manual measurement.

  • Electrostatic micro-motors can be divided into three classes: (i) salient type side drive motor, (ii) radial gap type wobble motor, (iii) axial gap type wobble motor. The working mechanism, torque evaluation, fabrication, and operational characteristics of each micro motors are compared. It is proved that axial gap type wobble motor has the bigger generating torque than that of the other type. The gear ratio of wobble motors increases the driving torque at the cost of a decreasing angular speed and decreases the friction because of the rolling motion instead of sliding at the bearing. Techniques for characterizing micro-motors performance are presented.

  • This paper is concerned with the prediction of micro structural changes of Al alloys during cryogenic rolling using an Eulerian finite element analysis. The main objective of cryogenic rolling is to obtain ultra-fine grains by severe plastic deformation at the extremely low temperature. Thereby, this simulation focuses on micro structural developments - the texture development and the changes in the size and shape of grains. The former one may be modeled using a crystal plasticity theory while the other can be predicted by a streamline technique. Applications to three pass rolling are given.

  • Cross rolling process is one of incremental forming processes to form an axi-symmetric shaped metal component. It can be classified into two types according to the shape of dies, which are a drum type (roll type) and a plate type (straight type). It can also be classified into a wedge type and a ramp type processes according to deformation characteristics of a material. The ramp type die is applied to plate type cross rolling process in cold forming process for forming of teeth of gear or bolt, while the wedge type die is generally utilized to drum type and plate type cross rolling processes in hot forming process. A shape of the ramp type die is usually same as final shape of a product at every section of a progressing direction, while the shape of the wedge type die has different shapes in a progressing direction. In this paper, a rolling of neck part in a ball stud component has been carried out using the plate type cross rolling process with a ramp shaped die. Forming characteristics have been performed using finite element analysis in order to obtain a proper preform for the ramp type plate cross rolling process.

  • Recrystallization textures of ferritic stainless steel sheets of STS 430 were varied by means of different cold rolling procedures. The conventional normal rolling led to the evolution of strong through-thickness texture gradients in the final recrystallization texture, while the cross-rolling led to a decrease in texture gradients. Micro-texture observation by EBSD revealed that the formation of band-like orientation colonies formed close to the center layer was responsible for ridging. Modification of the recrystallization texture and microstructure by cross-rolling destroyed band-like orientation colonies and consequently reduced the ridging height.

  • This paper presents a development of the auxiliary power supply simulator for a electric rolling stock. An auxiliary power supplies are required for operating air conditioning units, ventilation fans, lighting and battery charging. Traditionally this function has been fulfilled by Motor-Alternator sets. In recent years, high performance of semiconductor and micro processor, availability and price have made three phase voltage source inverters as an attractive alternative to MA Sets. From the baseline model of the SIV(Static InVerter) for electric rolling stock, we designed the scale down model of the auxiliary power supply simulator consisting of an IGBT three phase voltage source inverter. The auxiliary power supply simulator can be used educatory purpose for training efficiently about operating principles of SIV.

Development of Continuous and Scalable Nanomanufacturing Technologies Inspired by Traditional Machining Protocols Such as Rolling, Pullout, and Forging (롤압연, 압출, 단조 등 전통 기계가공법의 모사 응용을 통한 다양한 나노패턴의 대면적 연속생산 기술 구현)

  • We present a series of simple but novel nanopatterning methodologies inspired by traditional mechanical machining processes involving rolling, pullout, and forging. First, we introduce roll-to-roll nanopatterning, which adapts conventional rolling for continuous nanopatterning. Then, nano-inscribing and nano-channel lithography are demonstrated, whereby seamless nanogratings can be continuously pulled out, as in a pullout process. Finally, we discuss vibrational indentation micro- and nanopatterning. Similarly to the forging/indentation process, this technique employs high-frequency vertical vibration to indent periodic micro/nanogratings onto a horizontally fed substrate. We discuss the basic principles of each process, along with its advantages, disadvantages, and potential applications. Adopting mature and reliable traditional technologies for small-scale machining may allow continuous nanopatterning techniques to cope with scalable and low-cost nanomanufacturing in a more productive and trustworthy way.
