  • This study investigated changes of mechanical characteristics of the trabecular and cortical bone in the lumbar vertebrae of the ovariectomised (OVX) rat. In previous researches, there were many studies for morphology of osteoporotic bones based on Micro-Computed Tomography (Micro-CT). However, there were few studies for detecting and tracking changes of mechanical characteristics of the trabecular and cortical bone in the lumbar vertebrae of the OVX rat. For this study, the 4th lumbar of the OVX rat (female Sprague-Dawley) was utilized as a specimen. An OVX rat was scanned at week 0 (just before surgery), at week 4, and week 8 after surgery. Micro-finite element (${\mu}-FE$) analysis was used to investigate mechanical characteristics of the trabecular and cortical bone in the lumbar vertebrae for an OVX rat. When the OVX rat (at week 8) was compared with the OVX rat (at week 0), the structural modulus of cortical and trabecualr bone was decreased by 52% and 99%, respectively. This study showed the change of mechanical characteristics of cortical bone as well as trabecular bone of an OVX rat. Detecting and tracking changes of mechanical characteristics could greatly contribute to an experiment test for the trabecular and cortical bone in the lumbar vertebrae of an OVX rat by using In-vivo Micro-CT.

  • Surface roughness of mechanical components is an important factor which affects the tribological phenomena. Various surface patterns have been applied to surfaces to improve the tribological characteristics of mechanical components. In this work, the friction reduction effect of micropatterns on silicon was investigated. For this purpose, micro-dimple patterns were fabricated on silicon wafer by DRIE process. In the friction experiments silicone oil was used as lubricant. Also, the lubricant was cleaned to simulate a lubricant depleted condition. In depleted lubricated condition, friction coefficient of micro-pattern specimens was lower than specimens without micro-patterns. It was found that friction reduction effect of micro-pattern could be successfully maintained even after cleaning the lubricant on the surface.

  • In this paper, we analyzed the electrical characteristics with Micro-cracks in Photovoltaic module. Micro cracks are increasing the breakage risk over the whole value chine from the wafer to the finished module, because the wafer or cell is exposed to mechanical stress. And The solar cells have to with stand the stress under out door operation in the finished module. Here the mechanical stress is induced by temperature changes and mechanical loads from wind and snow. So, we experimentally analyze the direct impact of micro-cracks on the module power and the consequences after artificial aging. The first step, we made micro-cracks in PV module by mechanical load test according to IEC 61215. Next, PV modules applied the thermal cycling test, because micro-cracks accelerated aging by thermal cycling test, according to IEC61215. Before every test, we checked output and EL image of PV module. As the result of first step, we detected little power loss(0.9%). But after thermal cycling test increased power loss about 3.2%.

  • Several workers reported the relationship between osteoporosis and age-related reductions in the BV/TV (bone volume fraction) of vertebral trabecular bones. However, there were few micro finite element (micro-FE) models to account for the treatments of the osteoporotic trabecular bone. In the present study, micro-FE models of osteoporotic and hormone-treated bone models were constructed to analyze the effect of specimen location and boundary condition on mechanical characteristics of hormone treatment model for osteoporotic trabecular bone. Top and bottom sections of specimens were also investigated individually to study the effect of specimen location. Hormone-treated models were allowed to have the same relative BV/TV (13.4%) as that used in models of previous researchers. The present study reported the elastic and plastic characteristics of the osteoporosis and hormone-treated bone models. In the present study, in-situ boundary condition was applied to the simulated compression tests for in-vivo condition of vertebral trabecular bone. The present study indicated that the hormone therapy was likely to improve the mechanical characteristics of osteoporotic bones and the mechanical characteristics of vertebral trabecular bone specimen were dependent on the captured location and boundary condition.

  • Micro-EDM technology (or the manufacture of miniature parts is used to make a micro hole. Two electrode shaping methods, mechanical electrode grinding and WEDG technique, have been studied. In this study, an electrode shaping method by using previously machined hole is introduced in order to obtain an optimal hole-making condition. Key factors such as applied voltage, capacitance, feedrate, and hole-dimension have an influence on the fabricating error of electrode shaping, which are taper ratio of a hole, electrode form accuracy, and electrode surface. Therefore, we try to investigate the optimal fabricating of electrode shaping from various experiments. Results from experiments, it was able to minimize the electrode fabricating error as voltage increases, and also applied feedrate and capacitance decreases.

  • Recently, micro shock tube is being extensively used in various fields of engineering applications. The flow characteristics occurring in the micro shock tube may be significantly different from that of conventional macro shock tube due to very low Reynolds number and Knudsen number effects which are, in general, manifested in such flows of rarefied gas, solid-gas two-phase, etc. In these situations, Navier-Stokes equations cannot properly predict the micro shock tube flow. In the present study, a two-dimensional CFD method has been applied to simulate the micro shock tube, with slip velocity and temperature jump boundary conditions. The effects of wall thermal conditions on the unsteady flow in the micro shock tube were also investigated. The unsteady behaviors of shock wave and contact discontinuity were, in detail, analyzed. The results obtained show much more attenuation of shock wave, compared with macro-shock tubes.

  • Vacuum hot pressing has been used for the development of Ti-MMCs using foil-fiber-foil method, and subsequent micro-mechanical characteristics of the composites are evaluated by means of several experimental processes. As shown by the results, fiber strength degradation occurs during the consolidation, and particularly residual stresses results from the thermal expansion mismatch between fiber and matrix materials during cooling process are incorporated in the changes of mechanical properties of the composites. In industrial applications, the processing conditions avoiding micro-material failures are important together with the properties of finished products, and therefore should be included in the assesment of the material characterization.

  • As the track density of hard disk drives increases, there is a need for more precise actuation of the head. This can be accomplished by using a high band width micro-actuator. In this work, the flying characteristics of sliders with micro-actuators are investigated with the aim to optimize the head/disk interface performance of such sliders. Contact-start-stop, sweep, and flying height tests are performed and analyzed. The results show that the MEMS based micro-actuator mounted on a slider possess acceptable flying characteristics.

  • A micro-mixer with a quasi-active rotor was fabricated, and mixing characteristics were evaluated. The proposed micro-mixer combines an active type micro-mixer with a passive type micro-mixer. The micro-rotor, which is a moving part of an active type micro-mixer, is added in a micro-chamber of a passive type vortex micro-mixer. The rotor rotated by inflows tangent to a chamber, causing strong perturbations. The micro-mixers were fabricated using photosensitive glass. Mixing efficiency of the micro-mixers was measured using an image analysis method. Mixing efficiency and characteristics of the micro-rotor mixer were compared with the vortex micro-mixer without a rotor. Mixing efficiency was reduced as Reynolds number increased at a low Reynolds number due to decrease of residence time. Mixing efficiency at higher Reynolds number, on the other hand, was improved even though residence time decreased since the contact surface between fluids increased by twisted flow. The perturbation induced by rotating rotor at greater than Re 200 improved the efficiency of the rotor mixer.
