The main objective of this study is to validate the performance characteristics of newly developed micro propeller turbine based on experimental model test. For this purpose, Measurements of efficiency and cavitation tests with variations on the guide vane opening, blade rotational speed, head and load are carried out according to the IEC standard for model testing. From the tests and scale up calculation, the maximum prototype and model efficiency of the runner blade reaches as high as 90.87 % and 90.27 % respectively. Test results show that good cavitation behavior is covered in the range of output 50kW and 100 kW.
This paper aims to develop a submerged propeller turbine for micro hydropower plant which allows to sustain high values of efficiency in a broad range of hydrological conditions (H=2~6 m, $Q=0.15{\sim}0.39m^3/s$). The two aspects to be considered in this development are mechanical simplicity and high-efficiency operation. Unlike conventional turbines that have spiral casing and gear box, this is directing driving and no spiral casing. A 10 kW class turbine which has the most high potential of the power generation has been developed. The most important element in the design of turbine is the runner blade. The initial blade is designed using inverse design method and then the runner geometry is modified by classical hydraulic method. The design process is carried out in two steps. First, the blade shape is fix and then other components of submerged propeller turbine are designed. Computational fluid dynamics analyses based on the Navier-Stokes equations have been used to obtain overall performance data for the blade and the full turbine, respectively. The results generated by performance parameters(head, guide vane opening angle and rotational speed) variations are theoretically analysed. The evaluation criteria for the blade and the turbine performances are the pressure distribution and flow's behavior on the runner blades and turbine. The results of simulation reveals an efficiency of 91.5% and power generation of 10.5kW at the best efficiency point at the head of 4m and a discharge of $0.3m^3/s$.

As the advance in technology requires micro mechanical systems, the production methods for micro parts are of a great interest of many researchers. Although MEMS is one of the most popular methods. it can only produce 2D microstructures. The micro manufacturing with micro-mill and micro-lathe has a great potential for producing arbitrary 3D shapes and are being researched. In this paper, a PC based 5-axis milling machine with high precision was developed. To evaluate the machine performance, micro ribs and micro columns were machined. The machining experiments of micro impeller and micro turbine blade confirmed the possibility of micro system manufacturing by using the developed milling machine.

The performance of MAV(Micro Air Vehicles) propellers is highly affected by the aerodynamic characteristics of a 2-D blade airfoil shapes. XFOIL is used to predict the lift and drag coefficients in low Reynolds Number flows. ARA-D 6%, which shows a good performance in low Reynolds Number regions, is selected as a blade airfoil. The 3-D propeller blade shape is optimized with the minimum energy loss condition, and the distribution of aerodynamic coefficients of ARA-D 6% is calculated. The designed optimal blade is compared with the Black Widow's propeller blade shape in the same conditions. The results indicate that the designed propeller installed in MAV can provide a good performance.
In this paper, we present early processing techniques for visual inspection of metallic parts. Since metallic surfaces give rise to specular reflections, it is difficult to extract object boundaries using elementary segmentation techniques such as edge detection or binary thresholding. In this paper, we present two techniques for finding object boundaries on micro bit images. First, we explain a technique for detecting blade boundaries using a directional correlation mask. Second, a line and angle extraction technique based on Harris corner detector and Hough transform is described. These techniques have been effective for detecting blade boundaries, and a number of experimental results are presented using real images.

Research during the past several years has established the effectiveness of acoustic emission (AE)-based sensing methodologies for machine condition analysis and process. AE has been proposed and evaluated for a variety of sensing tasks as well as for use as a technique for quantitative studies of manufacturing process. STD11 has been known as difficult-to-cut materials. For this study, the micro-grooving machine was developed. The experiments were performed using diamond blade and CBN blade f3r machining STD11. Evaluating the machining conditions, frequency spectrum analysis of acoustic emission (AE) signals according to each conditions were applied.

Plasma display panel (PDP) is a type of flat panel display utilizing the light emission that is produced by gas discharge. Barrier Ribs of PDP separating each sub-pixel prevents optical and electrical crosstalk from adjacent sub-pixels. Mold for forming barrier ribs has been newly researched to overcome the disadvantages of conventional manufacturing process such as screen printing, sand-blasting and photosensitive glass methods. Mold for PDP barrier ribs have stripes of micro grooves transferring stripes of glass-material wall. In this paper. Stripes of grooves of which width 48 um, depth 124um, pitch 274um was acquired by machining the material of WC with dicing saw blade. Maximum roughness of the bottom and sidewall of the grooves was respectively 120 nm, 287 nm. Maximum tilt angle caused by difference between upper-most width and lower-most width was 2$^{\circ}$. Maximum Radius of curvature of bottom was 7.75 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$. This results meets the specification for barrier ribs of 50 inch XGA PDP. Forming the glass paste will be followed by using mold in the near future.

A design method for a propeller type rim-driven axial-flow turbine for a micro-hydropower system is presented. The turbine consists of pre-stator, impeller and post-stator, where the pre-stator plays a role as a guide vane to provide circumferential velocity to the on-coming flow, and the impeller as a rotational power generator by absorbing angular momentum of the flow. BEM(Blade Element Method), which is based on the turbine Euler equation, is employed to design the pre-stator and impeller blades. NACA 66 thickness form and a=0.8 mean camber line, which is widely accepted as a marine propeller blade section, is used for the pre-stator and turbine blade section. A CFD method, derived from the discretization of the RANS equations, is applied for the analysis of the designed turbine system. The design conditions of the turbine is confirmed by the CFD calculation. Turbine characteristic curve is calculated by the CFD method, in order to provide the performance characteristics at off-design operation conditions. The proposed procedures for the design of a propeller type rim-driven axial-flow turbine are established and confirmed by the CFD analysis.

The spaceborne cooler is applied to cool down of the focal plane of the infrared detector of the observation satellite. However, this cooler induces unnecessary micro-jitter which can degrade the image quality of the high-resolution observation satellite. In this study, we proposed a multi-layered blade type vibration isolator to attenuate micro-vibration generated from a spaceborne cooler, while assuring structural safety of the cooler under severe launch loads without an additional launch-lock device. The blade of the isolator is formed with multi-layers in order to obtain durability against fatigue failure and an adhesive is applied between each layers for granting high damping capability under launch vibration environment. In this study, the basic characteristics of the isolator were measured using the free-vibration test. The effectiveness of the isolator design was demonstrated by launch vibration test at qualification level.
