A study on Development of 300m Class Underwater ROV (300m급 수중ROV 개발에 관한 연구)

  • A 300 meter class ROV(CROV300) is composed of three parts : a surface unit, a tether cable and an underwater vehicle. The vehicle controller is based on two processors : an Intel 8097-16-bit one chip micro-processor and a Texas Instruments TMS320E25 digital signal processor. In this paper, the surface controller, the vehicle controller and peripheral devices interfaced with the processors are described. These controllers transmit/receive measured status data and control commands through RS422 serial communication. Depth, heading, trimming, camera tilting, and leakage signals are acquired through the embedded AD converters of the 8097. On the other hand, altitude of ROV and lbstacle avoidance signals are processed by the DSP processor and periodically fetched by the 8097. The processor is interfaced with a 4-channel 12-bit D/A converter to generate control signals for DC motors an dseveral transistors to handle the relays for on/off switching of external devices.

  • Onset voltage plays a crucial role in the design of a spray microthruster. This paper presents an analytical electrostatic model to predict the behavior of onset voltage in an array of emitters. The basic idea of this method is to superimpose the electric potentials obtained from each individual emitter in an array of emitters. The results show that if one emitter operates and the other neighboring emitters are dry, the potential required for cone-jet spraying generally increases as the emitter spacing decreases (due to electrical shielding). However at very close spacing the potential can decrease. If all emitters operate at the same time, the phenomenon that even at very close spacing the onset voltage required for cone-jet spraying increases merely as the emitter spacing decreases.

  • This paper presents the preliminary fabrication results of colloid thrusters which can provide thrust of the order of micro to milli-Newtons. MEMS technology has been used for fabrication, and four essential fabrication techniques - deep etching with nested masks, isotropic plasma etching, anisotropic reactive ion etching, and direct fusion wafer bonding - have been newly developed. Among diverse models which have been designed and fabricated, the fabrication results of 4-inch wafer-based colloid thrusters are presented.

  • In this article, in order to fabricate polymer based electrospray device with super hydrophobic nozzle we use PTFE(polyfluorotetraethylene) plate and PMMA(polymethylmethacrylate). To obtain the super hydrophobic surface nozzle, PTFE surface is treated by argon and oxygen plasma treatment process. And evaluate the treated surface, perform measuring contact angle, SEM(Scanning Electron Microscope) and AFM(Atomic Force Microscope). We compare the performance of the super hydrophobic PTFE surface nozzle with raw PTFE and PMMA surface nozzle. For the ion beam treated PTFE nozzle, the liquid doesn't overflow and it keeps initial position and meniscus shape. From these results, we expect in cease of superhydrophobic surface nozzle jetting becomes more stable and repeatable.

  • Hall thrusters are one of the electric propulsion, where ions are accelerated to generate thrust and are widely utilized in space missions due to their high specific impulses. Recently, as the utilization of small and micro satellites with the mass of similar or less than 100 kg is highly increasing, the importance of research and development of the low-power electric propulsion is also raised. In this study, we developed two sub-200 W or less class, laboratory model Hall thrusters and measured the thrust and analyzed the discharge characteristics. Consequently, we obtained 2.5-9.0 mN of thrust, 600-1,150 s of specific impulse, and 15-28% of anode efficiency at 50-175 W of anode power.

Characterization of a Micro-Laser-Plasma Electrostatic-Acceleration Hybrid-Thruster

  • As one of the concepts of the laser/electric hybrid propulsion system, a feasibility study on possibilities of electrostatic acceleration of a laser ablation plasma induced from a solid target was conducted. Energy distributions of accelerated ions were measured by a Faraday cup. A time-of-flight measurement was also conducted for ion velocity measurement. It was found that an average speed of ions from a pure laser ablation in this case was about 20 km/sec for pulse energy of 40 $\mu$J/pulse with pulse width of 250 psec. On the other hand, through an electrostatic field with a + I ,000 V electrode, the speed could be accelerated up to 40 km/sec. It was shown that the electrode with positive potential was more effective than that with negative potential for positive-ion acceleration in laser induced plasma, or pulsed plasma, in which ions were induced with the Coulomb explosion following electrons. In addition, the ion-acceleration or deceleration strongly depended on conditions of pairs of inner diameter and electrodes gap.

  • STSAT-2 will be launched on December 2007 by the first Korean launch vehicle KSLV-1, and its one of the main instruments is DREAM (Dual Channel Radio Frequency and Environment Atmosphere Monitoring) which detects a signal for atmosphere from the Earth by using micro-wave signal. The STSAT-2 has many units for technology demonstration such as FDSS (Fine Digital Sun Sensor) and DHST (Dual Head Star Tracker) including PPT (Pulsed Plasma Thruster) for attitude control and momentum dumping in the space. In this paper, the power budget analysis for STSAT-2 will be studied and provided for supporting the whole mission life time during the mission of its spacecraft.

Design and Performance Prediction of μN Level MEMS Thrust Measurement System of Piezoresistance Method (압저항 방식의 μN급 MEMS 추력 측정 시스템 설계 및 성능 예측)

  • In this study, an MEMS thrust measurement system was designed and a study on the performance prediction of system was performed to evaluate the performance of micro thruster. Thrust measurement system consists of beam, membrane, and piezoresistive sensor. An FEM analysis was carried out to verify the stability of the system, confirm the stress variation at the beam, and position the piezoresistive sensor. The stability of the designed system was verified by comparing the yield strength of the material with the maximum stress. The piezoresistive sensor was designed to be 20% of the length of the beam to obtain a high gauge factor. The size of the membrane and the beam of the reference model were designed to be $15mm{\times}15mm$, and $500{\mu}m{\times}500{\mu}m$, respectively.
