  • This work deals with the electrical conductivity of dielectric on output parameters such as metal removal rate and surface roughness value of a carbon steel(SM25C) and sintered carbides cut by wire electrical discharge machining (WEDM). Dielectric has several functions like insulation, ionization, cooling, the removal of waste metal particles. The presence of minute metal particles(debris) in spark gap contaminates and lowers the breakdown strength of dielectric. And it is considered that too much debris in spark gap is generally believed to be the cause of arcing. Experimental results show that increases of cobalt amount in carbides affects the metal removal rate and worsens the surface quality as a greater quantity of solidified metal deposits on the eroded surface. Lower electrical conductivity of the dielectric results in a lower metal removal rate because the gap between wire electrode and workpiece reduced. Especially, the surface characteristics of rough-cut workpiece and wire electrode were analyzed too. Debris were analyzed also through scanning electron microscopy(SEM) and surface roughness tester. Micro cracks and some of electrode material are found on the workpiece surface by energy dispersive spectrometer(EDS).

  • The corrosion environments in a steel structure are significantly different depending on the individual parts of the members. To ensure the safety of weathering steel structures, it is important to evaluate the time-dependent corrosion behavior. Thus, the progress and effect of corrosion damage on weathering steel members should be evaluated; however, the predicted corrosion depth, which is affected by the corrosion environment, has not been sufficiently considered until now. In this study, the time-dependent thicknesses of the corrosion product layer were examined to quantifiably investigate and determine the corrosion depth of the corroded surface according to the exposure periods and corrosion environments. Thus, their atmospheric exposure tests were carried out for 4 years under different corrosion environments. The relationship between the thickness of the corrosion product layers and mean corrosion depth was examined based on the corrosion environment. Thus, the micro corrosion environments on the skyward and groundward surfaces of the specimens were monitored using atmospheric corrosion monitor sensors. In addition, the evaluated mean corrosion depth was calculated based on the thickness of the corrosion product layer in an atmospheric corrosion environment, and was verified through a comparison with the measured mean corrosion depth.

  • The components with the circular cross section have the symmetric combination parts for rotating balance and the crack emanates from the symmetric combination parts. The symmetric cracks from symmetric combination parts make a decrease in the component fatigue life more than single crack. In this study, to estimate the behavior of symmetric cracks, the fatigue test was performed using rotary bending tester on the specimen with a symmetric defects in circular cross section. The material used in this study is Ni-Cr-Mo steel alloy. Under the same stress, the result from the rotary bending fatigue test turned out that the symmetric cracks made a decrease in the fatigue life by 35% more than single crack and the relation between log a and cycle ratio $N/N_f$ obtained linearly.

  • In order to investigate the fracture behaviors(penetration modes) and resistance to penetration during ballistic impact of Titanium alloy laminates and nitrified Titanium alloy laminates which were treated by PVD(Physical Vapor Deposition) method, ballistic tests were conducted. Evaporation, sputtering, and ion plating are three kinds of PVD method. In this research, Ion plating was used to achieve higher surface hardness and surface hardness test were conducted using a Micro vicker's hardness tester. Resistance to penetration is determined by the protection ballistic limit($V_{50}$), a statistical velocity with 50% probability for complete penetration. Fracture behaviors and ballistic tolerance, described by penetration modes, are respectfully observed at and above ballistic limit velocities, as a result of $V_{50}$ test and Projectile Through Plates (PTP) test methods. PTP tests were conducted with $0^{\circ}$ obliquity at room temperature using 5.56mm ball projectile. $V_{50}$ test with $0^{\circ}$ obliquity at room temperature were conducted with projectiles that were able to achieve near or complete penetration during PTP tests. Surface hardness, resistance to penetration, and penetration modes of Titanium alloy laminates are compared to those of nitrified Titanium alloy laminates.

  • The purpose of this study was to measure the Micro-Knoop Hardness of three commercial visible light-cured composite resins (Plurafil-super, He1iosit and Durafi) according to the difference of depth and shade. Specimens of the resin were prepapared in plastic tubes 5mm in diameter with height of 5mm, and the tubes were put into the columned holes in stone molds. The molds were exposed to the visible light through the hole 5mm in diameter in metal plate. Specimens were sectioned (longitudinally) with disk. Knoop Hardness measurements were made at the depth of surface, 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, 2.0, 2.5 and 3.0mm from the surface to the deep portion. Knoop Hardness numbers were taken on each depth under 20gm load for 10 seconds with Shimadzu Tester. The following results were: 1. The highest hardness value was measured at 0.5mm depth. Then the deeper the depth, the lesser the hardness was observed. 2. The value of hardness was directly propotional to the time of exposure to the light. 3. The hardness of light shade resin was higher than the that of the dark shade. 4. The pattern of hardness change at varying depth is similar to all the experimental materials with no relation to the shade nor exposure time.

  • Abrasive wear between piston ring face and cylinder liner is an extremely unpredictable and hard-to-reproduce phenomenon that significantly decreases engine performance. Wear by abrasion are forms of wear caused by contact between a particle and solid material. Abrasive wear is the loss of material by the passage of hard particles over a surface. From the pin-on-disk test, particle dent test and scuffing test, abrasive wear characteristics of diesel engine cylinder liner-piston ring have been investigated. Pin-on-disk test results indicate that abrasive wear resistance is not simply related to the hardness of materials, but is influenced also by the microstructure, temperature, lubricity and micro- fracture properties. In particle dent test, dent resistance stress decreases with increasing temperature. From the scuffing test by using pin-on-disk tester, scuffing mechanisms for the soft coating and hard coating were proposed and experimentally confirmed.

  • In order to investigate the effect of surface treatment in Aluminium alloy and Titanium alloy which are used to armor material during ballistic impact, a ballistic testing was conducted. Anodizing was used to achieve higher surface hardness of Aluminium alloy and Iron plating in PVD(Physical Vapor Deposition) method was used to achieve higher surface hardness of Titanium alloy. Surface hardness test were conducted using a Micro victor's hardness tester. Ballistic resistance of these materials was measured by protection ballistic limit(V-50), a statical velocity with 50% probability penetration. Fracture behaviors and ballistic tolerance, described by penetration modes, are respectfully observed from the results of V-50 test and Projectile Through Plates (PTP) test at velocities greater than V-50. PTP tests were conducted with 0$^{\circ}$obliquity at room temperature using 5.56mm ball projectile. V-50 tests were conducted with 0$^{\circ}$obliquity at room temperature with projectiles that were able to achieve near or complete penetration during PTP tests. Surface hardness, resistance to penetration. and penetration modes of surface treated alloy laminates are compared to those of surface non-treated alloy laminates. A high speed photography was used to analyze the dynamic perforation phenomena of the test materials.

  • Cold gas dynamic spray or cold spray is a novel manufacturing method for coatings. Cold spray is a high rate and direct material deposition process that utilizes the kinetic energy of particles sprayed at high velocity (300-1,200m/s). In this research, a technique to repair the damaged mold by cold spray deposition and mechanical machining was proposed. An aluminum 6061 mold with three-dimensional surface was fabricated, intentionally damaged and material-added by cold spray, and its original geometry was re-obtained successfully by Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machining. To investigate deformation of material caused by cold spray, deposition was conducted on thin aluminum plates ($100mm{\times}100mm{\times}3mm$). The average deformation of the plates was $205{\sim}290{\mu}m$ by Coordinate Measurement Machine (CMM). In addition, the cross section of deposited layer was analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). To compare variation of hardness, Vickers hardness was measured by micro-hardness tester.

  • SCM415 alloy was implanted with nitrogen ions using plasma source ion implantation (PSII), at a dose range of $1{\times}10^{17}\;to\;6{\times}10^{17}\;N^+cm^{-2}$ Auger electron spectrometry (AES) was used to investigate the depth profile of the implanted layer. Friction and wear tests were carried out on a block-on-ring wear tester. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used to observe the micro-morphology of the worn surface. The results revealed that after being implanted with nitrogen ions, the frictional coefficient of the surface layer decreased, and the wear resistance increased with the nitrogen dose. The tribological mechanism was mainly adhesive, and the adhesive wear tended to become weaker oxidative wear with the increase in the nitrogen dose. The effects were mainly attributed to the formation of a hard nitride precipitate and a supersaturated solid solution of nitrogen in the surface layer.
