This study investigated variations of micro-structures and mechanical properties of Ti / STS321L joint with various bonding temperature and time using brazing method. According to increasing bonding temperature and time, it was observed that the thickness of their reaction layer increased due So increasing diffusion rate and time. From the EPMA results, Ti diffused to the STS321L substrate according to increasing bending time to 30min. Hardness of bonded interface increased with increasing bonding temperature and time due to increasing their oxides and intermetallic compounds. XRD data indicated that Ag, Ag-Ti intermetallic compounds, TiAg and $Ti_3Ag$ and titanium oxide, $TiO_2$ were formed in interface. In tensile test, it was found that the tensile strength had a maximum value at the bonding temperature of $900^{\circ}C$ and time of 5min, and tensile strength decreased over bonding time of 5min. The critical thickness of intermetallic compounds was observed to about $30\mu\textrm{m}$, because of brittleness from their excessive intermetallic compounds and titanium oxide, and weakness from void.
The requirements of orthodontic wire should include chemical stability, non-discoloration and non-corrosion in oral environment. Ability to be soldered, ease of fabrication and elasticity should be also considered. The purpose of this study was to compare and analyze the physical properties of Tru-chrome wire and manufactured E.S.S. (Experimental Stainless Steel) wire similar to Tru-chrome. The results were as follows: 1. Tru-chrome wire and E.S.S. wire were SUS 304 which was 18 Cr-8Ni austenite stainless steel. There was not significant difference in each composition between two wires. 2. There were not significant differences in ultimate tensile strength, yield strength, elongation and modulus of elasticity between Tru-chrome and E.S.S. wires. 3. There was not significant difference between flexuree modulus of elasticity of Tru-chrome and E.S.S. wires. 4. Micro-hardness value of E.S.S. wire was more than that of Tru-chrome wire and they were softened significantly by solution heat reatment. 5. Micro-structure of Tru-chrome and E.S.S. wires showed fibrous interlocking grains, and an austenite structure after solution heat treatment. 6. There was significant difference between corrosion rate of Tru-chrome and E.S.S. wires.
This study investigates the properties of light weight foamed concrete designed with various incorporating ratios of CKD and adding ratios of PS. Test showed that increase of CKD and PS decreased fluidity of fresh concrete, which need more addition of superplasticizer to secure proper fluidity. As for the sinking depth of specimens, using more CKD or PS decreased the value, due to the improvement of viscosity by micro particles of CKD and reduction of air loss by PS. Those methods are very effective to solve the sinking problem of light weight foamed concrete, which has been highly concerned. For the hardened concrete, compressive strength of specimens exhibited that using around 10% of CKD or 0.02% of PS increased the strength value, but decreased when incorporated or added more amounts of that, due to reduction of the sinking depth, caused by filling effect of the micro particle and improvement of the viscosity.
Liquid-phase-sintered (LPS) SiC materials were briefly examined with their microstructure and mechanical property. Especially, effect of high-temperature exposure on the tendency of fracture toughness of LPS-SiC were introduced. The LPS-SiC was fabricated in hot-press by sintering powder mixture of sub-micron SiC and sintering additives of Al2O3-Y2O3. LPS-SiC represented dense morphology and SiC grain-growth with some amount of micro-pores and clustered additives as pore-filling. The strength of LPS-SiC might affected by distribution of micro-pores. LPS-SiC tended to decrease fracture toughness depending on increasing exposure temperature and time.

Concrete is highly non-linear material which is originating from the transition zone in the form of micro-cracks, governs material response under various loadings. In this paper, the constitutive models published by many researchers have been used to generate novel stiffness parameters and constitutive curves for concrete. Following such linear material formulations, where the energy is conservative during the curvature, and a nonlinear contribution to the concrete has been made and investigated. In which, nonlinear concrete elastic modulus modeling has been developed that is capable-of representing concrete elasticity for grades ranging from 10 to 140 MPa. Thus, covering the grades range of concrete up to the ultra-high strength concrete, and replacing many concrete models that are valid for narrow ranges of concrete strength grades. This has been followed by the introduction of the nonlinear Hooke's law for the concrete material through the replacement of the Young constant modulus with the nonlinear modulus. In addition, the concept of concrete elasticity index (${\varphi}$) has been proposed and this factor has been introduced to account for the degradation of concrete stiffness in compression under increased loading as well as the multi-stages micro-cracking behavior of concrete under uniaxial compression. Finally, a sub-routine artificial neural network model has been developed to capture the concrete behavior that has been introduced to facilitate the prediction of concrete properties under increased loading.
This paper aims to investigate the axial compressive behavior of reinforced concrete (RC) columns strengthened with self-compacting and micro-expanding (SM) concrete-filled steel tubes (SM-CFSTs). Nine specimens were tested in total under the local axial compression. The test parameters included steel tube thickness, filling concrete strength, filling concrete type and initial axial preloading. The test results demonstrated that the initial stiffness, ultimate bearing capacity and ductility of original RC columns were improved after being strengthened by SM-CFSTs. The ultimate bearing capacity of the SM-CFST strengthened RC columns was significantly enhanced with the increase of steel tube thickness. The initial stiffness and ultimate bearing capacity of the SM-CFST strengthened RC columns were slightly enhanced with the increase of filling concrete strength. However, the effect of filling concrete type and initial axial preloading of the SM-CFST strengthened RC columns were negligible. Three equations for predicting the ultimate bearing capacity of the SM-CFST strengthened RC columns were compared, and the modified equation based on Chinese code (GB 50936-2014) was more precise.
While ultra-high performance concrete (UHPC) is commonly reinforced with micro straight steel fibers in existing applications, studies have indicated that the use of deformed steel macro-fibers leads to enhanced ductility and post-peak responses for UHPC structural elements, which is of particular importance for earthquake-resistant structures. However, there are potential concerns regarding the use of UHPC reinforced with macro-fibers due to the issues of workability and fiber distribution. The objective of this study was to address these issues by extensively investigating the restricted and non-restricted deformability, filling ability, horizontal and vertical velocities, and passing ability of UHPC containing macro hooked-end steel fibers. A new approach is suggested to examine the homogeneity of fiber distribution in UHPC. The influences of ultra-fine fillers and steel macro-fibers on the workability of fresh UHPC and the mechanics of hardened UHPC were examined. It was found that although increasing the ratio of quartz powder to cement led to an improvement in the workability and tensile strain hardening behavior of UHPC, it reduced the fiber distribution homogeneity. The addition of 1% volume fraction of macro-fibers in UHPC improved workability, but reduced its compressive strength, which is contrary to the effect of micro-fiber inclusion in UHPC.
This study presents the experimental results performed to evaluate the effects of Polyvinyl-alcohol (PVA) and Polypropylene (PP) fibers on the fresh and residual mechanical properties of the hybrid fiber reinforced SCC before and after the exposure of 250℃, 500℃ and 750℃ temperatures. The compressive and splitting tensile strength, modulus of rupture (MOR), ultrasonic pulse velocity (UPV) as well as toughness and weight loss were investigated at different temperatures. PVA and PP fibers were added into SCC mixtures having only macro steel fiber and also having binary hybridization of both macro and micro steel fiber. The results showed that the use of micro steel fiber replaced by macro steel fiber improved the fresh and hardened properties compared to the use of only macro steel fiber. Moreover, it was emphasized that PVA or PP enhanced the residual flexural performance of SCC, generally, while it negatively influenced the workability, weight loss, UPV and the residual strengths with regards to the use of single steel fiber and binary steel fiber hybridization. Compared to the effect of synthetic fibers, PP had slightly more positive effect in the view of workability while PVA enhanced the residual mechanical properties more.
This paper presents a review on the use of Silica Fume (SF) as a mineral admixture in the concrete. Distinctive outcome from several researches have been demonstrated here, particularly emphasizing on the fresh and hardened properties of concrete when blended with Silica Fume (Micro-silica or Nano-silica). The results showed a substantial enhancement in the mechanical properties of concrete when replaced with SF. The review also presented a brief idea of percentage replacement of SF in case of normal and high-strength concrete. A decreasing trend in workability (slump value) has been identified when there is a increase in percentage replacement of SF. It can be concluded that the optimize percentage of replacement with SF lies in the range of 8-10% particularly for compressive strength. However the variation of blending goes up to 12-15% in case of split tensile and flexure strength of concrete. The study also demonstrates the effect of silica fume on durability parameters like water absorption, permeability, sulphate attack and chloride attack.
This research deals with the prediction of compressive strength of normal and high strength concrete using neural networks. The compressive strength was modeled as a function of eight variables: quantities of cement, fine aggregate, coarse aggregate, micro-silica, water and super-plasticizer, maximum size of coarse aggregate, fineness modulus of fine aggregate. Two networks, one using raw variables and another using grouped dimensionless variables were constructed, trained and tested using available experimental data, covering a large range of concrete compressive strengths. The neural network models were compared with regression models. The neural networks based model gave high prediction accuracy and the results demonstrated that the use of neural networks in assessing compressive strength of concrete is both practical and beneficial. The performance of model using the grouped dimensionless variables is better than the prediction using raw variables.
