Micro features on the surface are well-known to have significant effects on optical or mechanical properties such as the optical interference, reflectance at the surface, contact angle, interfacial friction, etc. These surface micro features are increasingly employed to enhance the functionality of the applications in various application areas such as optical components for LCD or solar panel. Diverse surface features have been proposed and some of them are showing excellent efficiency or functionality, especially in optical applications. Most applications employing the micro features need manufacturing process for mass production and the injection molding and roll-to-roll forming, which are typical processes for mass production adopting polymeric materials, may be also preferred for micro patterned plastic product. Since the functionality or efficiency of the surface structures generally depends on the shape and the size of the structure itself or the array of the structures on the surface, it would be very important to replicate the features very precisely as being designed during the molding the micro pattern applications. In this paper, a series of research activities is introduced for roll-to-roll forming of micro patterned film including filling of patterns with UV curable resin, demolding of surface structures from the roll tool, control of surface energy and cure shrinkage of resin and dispose time and intensity of the UV light for curing of UV curable resin.
A four beam interference optical system for laser micro structuring using a pulse laser was demonstrated. The four beam interference optical system using a pulse laser(picosecond laser) can fabricate micro structure on mold material(NAK80) directly. Micro structure on the polymer can be reproduced economically by injection molding of the micro structure on the mold material. The four beam interference optical system was composed by the DOE(Diffractive Optical Element) and two lenses. The laser intensity distribution of four beam interference was explained by an interference optics point of view and by the image optics point of view. We revealed that both views showed the same result. The laser power distribution of a $1{\mu}m$ peak pattern was made by the four beam interference optical system and measured by the objective lens and CCD. A $1{\mu}m$ pitch dot pattern on the mold material was fabricated and measured by SEM(Scanning Electron Microscopy).

Recently, the micro end-milling processing is demanded the high-precise technique with good surface roughness and rapid time in milli-structure parts, micro machine parts and molding industry. The cutting conditions of micro end-milling has an effect on surface roughness of cutting surface. Therefore this study was carried out to cut stainless steel using high revolution air bearing spindle and micro end-mill and analyze the cutting condition to get the optimum surface roughness by design of experiment. From this study, surface roughness have an much effect according to priority on depth of cut, revolution of spindle and feed.
A micro-PIV(particle image velocimetry) measurement has been conducted to investigate flow fields in such microfluidic devices as microchannels and micronozzle. The present study employs a state-of-art micro-PIV system which consists of epi-fluorescence microscope, 620nm diameter fluorescent seed particles and an 8-bit megapixel CCD camera. Velocity vector fields with a resolution of $6.7\times6.7{\mu}m$ has been obtained, and the attention has been paid on the effect of varying measurement conditions of particle diameter and particle concentration on the resulting PIV results. In this study, the microfluidic elements were fabricated on plastic chips by means of MEMS processes and a subsequent molding process. Flow fields in a variety of microchannels as well as micronozzle have been investigated.

In this study, carbon/phenol composites were prepared from carbon fiber preform and phenol resin by RTM(resin transfer molding) process. And changes in the properties of the composite according to the pre-treatment of phenol resin was mainly studied. RTM process conditions were deduced from viscosity and thermal analysis of phenol resin which were rheometer and thermogravimetric analyzer(TGA). RTM process was performed under various injection and molding temperature. Characterization of the prepared C/P composites were evaluated by various analysis. Morphology of composites was analyzed by Micro-CT(MCT), Mechanical properties of composites were measured through the flexural properties. As results, volatile impurities of phenol resin were effectively removed at resin pre-treatment temperature of $100^{\circ}C$ and composite was sufficiently cured at molding temperature of $180^{\circ}C$.
Rapid mold heating has been recent issue to enable the injection molding of thin-walled parts or micro/nano structures. High-frequency induction is an efficient way to heat mold surface by electromagnetic induction in a non-contact manner, and has been recently applied to the injection molding due to its capability of rapid heating and cooling of mold surface. The present study covers a three-dimensional finite element analysis to investigate heating efficiency and structural safety of the induction heating process of an injection mold. To simulate the induction heating process, an integrated simulation method is proposed by effectively connecting an electromagnetic field analysis, a transient heat transfer analysis and a thermal stress analysis. The estimated temperature changes are compared with experimental measurements for various types of induction coil, from which heating efficiency according to the coil shape is discussed. The resulting thermal stress distributions of the mold plate for various types of induction coils are also evaluated and discussed in terms of the structural safety.

Miniaturization of lenses has been widely researched by various scientific and engineering techniques. As a result, micro scaled lens structure could be easily achieved from various fabrication techniques; nevertheless it is still challenging to make nano scaled lenses. This paper reports a novel fabrication method of silicon nanotemplate for nanolens array. The inverse structure of nanolens array was fabricated on silicon substrate by reactive ion etching (RIE) process. This technique has a flexibility to produce different tip shapes using different pattern masks. Once the silicon nano-tip array structure is well-defined using an optimized recipe, it is followed by polymer molding to duplicate nanolens array from the template. Finally, the nanostructures formed on silicon nanotemplate and polymer replica were investigated using FE-SEM and AFM measurements. The nano scaled lens can be manufactured from the same template, also using other replication techniques such as imprinting, injection molding and so on.

In the optical application demand for high quality lens is increasing. Plastics lenses are demanded more than glass lenses for large size lenses as well as micro-size lenses. It is difficult to apply typical straight cooling channels of injection mold to lens molding due to its non-uniform temperature distribution. In this study, we manufactured molds for plastic lenses with the conventional cooling channels and conformal cooling channels produced by the DMLS process. We evaluated cooling performance for the 2 molds by injection molding experiment. Also, uniformity of the temperature distribution was tested by infrared camera and temperature monitoring. We confirmed that the cooling performance and temperature uniformity with the conformal cooling channels is much improved from the ones with the conventional. The cooling time with the conformal cooling channels was reduced 30% compared with the conventional cooling channels.

In MEMS (Micro-Electro-Mechanical System), packaging induced stress or stress induced structure deformation becomes increasing concerns since it directly affects the performance of the device. In the decoupled vibratory MEMS gyroscope, the main factor that determines the yield rate is the frequency difference between the sensing and driving modes. The gyroscope, packaged using the anodic bonding at the wafer level and EMC (epoxy molding compound) molding, has a deformation of MEMS structure caused by thermal expansion mismatch. This effect results in large distribution in the frequency difference, and thereby a lower yield rate. To improve the yield rate we propose a packaged SiOG (Silicon On Glass) process technology. It uses a silicon wafer and two glass wafers to minimize the wafer warpage. Thus the warpage of the wafer is greatly reduced and the frequency difference is more uniformly distributed. In addition. in order to increase robustness of the structure against deformation caused by EMC molding, a 'crab-leg' type spring is replaced with a semi-folded spring. The results show that the frequency shift is greatly reduced after applying the semi-folded spring. Therefore we can achieve a more robust vibratory MEMS gyroscope with a higher yield rate.
The purpose of this study is to investigate the manufacturing feasibility of WC-Co milling inserts via Powder Injection Molding (PIM) process. WC-Co is used in a wide variety of cutting tools due to its high hardness, stiffness, compressive strength and wear resistance properties. WC-Co parts for a high stress application were conventionally produced by the press and sinter method, which were Iimited to 2 dimensional shapes. Manufacturing WC-Co parts for a high stress application by PIM implies that tool efficiency can be highly improved due to increased freedom is design. P30 grade WC powder (WC-Co-TiC-TaC system) was mixed with RIST-5B133 binder and injection molded into milling inserts (Taegu Tech. Model WCMX 06T 308). The mean grain size of the powder was about 0.8$\mu$m. Injection molded specimens were debound by solvent extraction and thermal degradation method at various conditions. The specimens were sintered at 140$0^{\circ}C$ for 1 hr in vacuum. Carbon content, weight loss, dimensional change, and macro defects of the specimen were carefully monitored at each stage of the PIM process. PIMed WC-Co milling inserts reached 100% full density after sinteing. Its mechanical properties and micro-structures were comparable with the press and sintered milling insert. Carbon content of the sintered WC-Co insert was mainly determained by the atmosphere of thermal debinding. By controlling powder loading and injection molding condition, dimensional accuracy could be obtained within 0.4%. We confirm that PIM can not only be an alternative manufacturing method for WC-Co parts economically but also provide a design freedom for more effieient cutting tools.
