The present study developed a computer simulation program to determine the optimum strategy and capacity of a micro combined heat and power(CHP) system. This simulation program considered a part-load electrical/thermal efficiency and transient response characteristics of CHP unit. The result obtained from the simulation was compared with the actual operation of 30 kW gas engine driven micro CHP system. It was found that the simulation could reproduce the daily operation behavior, such as operating hours and mean load factor, closely to the actual behavior of the system and could predict the amount of electrical/thermal output and fuel consumption with the error of less than 12%.
A Beta-type Stirling engine is developed and tested on the operation stability and cycle performance. The flow rate for cooling water ranges from 300 to 1500 ml/min, while the temperature of heat source changes from 300 to $500^{\circ}C$. The internal pressure, working temperatures, and operation speed are measured and the engine performance is estimated from them. In the experiment, the rise in the temperature of heat source reduces internal pressure but increases operation speed, and overall, enhances the power output. The faster coolant flow rate contributes to the high temperature limit for stable operation, the cycle efficiency due to the alleviated thermal expansion of power piston, and the heat input to the engine, respectively. The experimental Stirling engine showed the maximum power output of 12.1 W and the cycle efficiency of 3.0 % when the cooling flow is 900 ml/min and the heat source temperature is $500^{\circ}C$.
As a part of micro engine development feasibility estimation was done through fabrication and test of down scaled combustor and MEMS fabricated spark electrode. In an experimental observation of the down scaled combustion phenomena where flame propagation was observed by optical method and pressure change in combustor which gives the information about the reaction generated thermal energy was recorded and analyzed. Optimal combustor scale was derived to be about 2mm considering increased heat loss effect and thermal energy generation capability. Through the fabrication and discharge test of MEMS electrode effects of electrode width and gap was investigated. Electrode was fabricated by thick PR mold and electroplating. From the result discharge voltage characteristic in sub millimeter scale electrode having thickness of $40{\mu}m$ was obtained. From the result base technology for design and fabrication of micro engine was obtained.

A proform for engine valve was designed by finite element method. In the preform design of engine valve, various initial billets are simulated for better preform to get sound final product. Here a preform is design to get desirable metal flow in the forming so that the final product has more uniform strain distribution. after forming. The analysis of the micro-structure of the value formed through the designed process was also performed and result was compared with that of simulation.

The effects of applying the micro CHP system to the domestic sector in Korea were investigated using annual cooling and heating demand data. Four prime movers, micro gas turbine, PEMFC, gas engine and Stirling engine, were compared for three operational modes. Two way buy-back was assumed for both electricity and heat. The Stirling engine gave the lowest $CO_2$ emission per energy for 300kWh monthly electricity production. However, PEMFC became more effective when considering PURPA criteria. PEMFC generated the least greenhouse gas with higher electrical efficiency for cooling. The Stirling engine, however, became competitive for heating with higher total efficiency.

The metadata for urban meteorological observation is standardized through comparison with those established at the World Meteorological Organization and the Korea Meteorological Administration to understand the surrounding environment around the sites exactly and maintain the networks and sites efficiently. It categorizes into metadata for an observational network and observational sites. The latter is again divided into the metadata for station general information, local scale information, micro scale information, and visual information in order to explain urban environment in detail. The metadata also contains the static information such as urban structure, surface cover, metabolism, communication, building density, roof type, moisture/heat sources, and traffic as well as the update information on the environment change, maintenance, replacement, and/or calibration of sensors. The standardized metadata for urban meteorological observation is applied to the Weather Information Service Engine (WISE) integrated meteorological sensor network and sites installed at Incheon area. It will be very useful for site manager as well as researchers in fields of urban meteorology, radiation, surface energy balance, anthropogenic heat, turbulence, heat storage, and boundary layer processes.

Cogeneration is the simultaneous generation of heat and electricity in a single unit, and is a highly energy-efficient technology compared to the independent generation of both products. Therefore, cogeneration has been widely introduced in many countries for use in industrial, commercial and residential applications. However, there have been few models with an output of less than 100 kilowatt. In the present study, a spark ignited gas engine with electric generation output of 10 kilowatts was developed for micro cogeneration package. The gas engine shows 26.7% of electric generation efficiency, NOx emission less than 10 ppm at 13% oxygen, 82 dB of Noise level, and about 3 seconds of switching time from idling to nominal power.
The product to be developed in this study is a heat recovery device which generates steam or hot water at high temperature and high pressure by heating water using exhaust gas from diesel engine, gas engine, gas turbine, etc. as an exhaust gas boiler off heat boiler(EGB) type for ship and power generation. The steam vapor or the created warm water is used as the power source required for the steerage heating and hot water facility or the HFO heating of the ship, and the turbine drive. The principle of waste heat boilers serves to heat water as high temperature exhaust gas with heat pass through the tube of the boiler. The heated water is a structure that is sent to a cabin or turbine device in the form of steam. In this study, the objective of this study is to maximize the efficiency by increasing the heat transfer surface by replacing the tube which is the heat transfer part of EGB with the plate tube.

In this study, a 2W micro-gas turbine engine was designed using micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS) technology, and experimental investigations of its potential under actual combustion conditions were performed. A micro-gas turbine (MGT) contains a turbo-charger, combustor, and generator. Compressor and turbine blades, and generator coil were manufactured using MEMS technology. The shaft was supported by a precision computer numerical control (CNC) machined static air bearing, and a permanent magnet was attached to the end of the shaft for generation. A heat transfer analysis found that the cooling effect of the air bearing and compressor was sufficient to cover the combustor's high temperature, which was verified in an actual experiment. The generator performance test showed that it can generate 2W at design rotational speed. Prototype micro-gas turbine generated maximum 1 mW electric power and lasted up to 15 minutes.
Abrasive wear between piston ring face and cylinder liner is an extremely unpredictable and hard-to-reproduce phenomenon that significantly decreases engine performance. Wear by abrasion are forms of wear caused by contact between a particle and solid material. Abrasive wear is the loss of material by the passage of hard particles over a surface. From the pin-on-disk test, particle dent test and scuffing test, abrasive wear characteristics of diesel engine cylinder liner-piston ring have been investigated. Pin-on-disk test results indicate that abrasive wear resistance is not simply related to the hardness of materials, but is influenced also by the microstructure, temperature, lubricity and micro- fracture properties. In particle dent test, dent resistance stress decreases with increasing temperature. From the scuffing test by using pin-on-disk tester, scuffing mechanisms for the soft coating and hard coating were proposed and experimentally confirmed.
