Purpose. This study aimed to assess the influence of various micromechanical surface conditioning (MSC) strategies with or without coupling agent (silane) application on the micro-shear bond strength (µSBS) of resin- matrix ceramics (RMCs). Materials and Methods. GC Cerasmart (GC), Lava Ultimate (LU), Vita Enamic (VE), Voco Grandio (VG), and Brilliant Crios (BC) were cut into 1.0-mm-thick slices (n = 32 per RMC) and separated into four groups according to the MSC strategy applied: control-no conditioning (C), air-borne particle abrasion with aluminum oxide particles (APA), 2W- and 3W-Er,Cr:YSGG group coding is missing. The specimens in each group were further separated into silane-applied and silane-free subgroups. Each specimen received two resin cement microtubules (n = 8 per subgroup). A shear force was applied to the adhesive interface through a universal test machine and µSBS values were measured. Data were statistically analyzed by using 3-way ANOVA and Tukey HSD test. Failure patterns were scrutinized under stereomicroscope. Results. RMC material type, MSC strategy, and silanization influenced the µSBS values (P<.05). In comparison to the control group, µSBS values increased after all other MSC strategies (P<.05) while the differences among these strategies were insignificant (P>.05). For control and APA, there were insignificant differences between RMCs (P>.05). The silanization decreased µSBS values of RMCs except for VE. Considerable declines were observed in GC and BC (P<.05). Conclusion. MSC strategies can enhance bond strength values at the RMC - cement interface. However, the choice of MSC strategy is dependent on RMC material type and each RMC can require a dedicated way of conditioning.

This study were conduced experimentally to analyze the heat-generating performance, flexural strength, and microstructure of conductive mortar mixed with micro steel fiber and multi-wall carbon nanotube (MWCNT). In the conductive mortar heat-generating performance and flexural strength tests, the mixing concentration of MWCNT was selected as 0.0wt%, 0.5wt%, and 1.0wt% relative to the weight of cement, and micro steel fibers were mixed at 2.0vol% relative to the volume. The performance experiments were conducted with various applied voltages (DC 10V, 30V, 60V) and different electrode spacings (40 mm, 120 mm) as parameters, and the flexural strength was measured at the curing age of 28 days and compared and analyzed with the normal mortar. Furthermore, the surface shape and microstructure of conductive mortar were analyzed using a field emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM). The results showed that the heat-generating performance improved as the mixing concentration of MWCNT and the applied voltage increased, and it further improved as the electrode spacing became narrower. However, even if the mixing concentration of MWCNT was added up to 1.0 wt%, the heat-generating performance was not significantly improved. As a result of the flexural strength test, the average flexural strength of all specimens except the PM specimen and the MWCNT mixed specimens was 4.5 MPa or more, showing high flexural strength due to the incorporation of micro steel fibers. Through FE-SEM image analysis, Through FE-SEM image analysis, it was confirmed that a conductive network was formed between micro steel fibers and MWCNT particles in the cement matrix.

The total hip replacement (THR) has been used as the most effective way to restore the function of damaged hip joint. However, various factors have caused some side effects after the THR. Unfortunately, the success of the THR have been decided only by the proficiency of surgeons so far. Hence, It is necessary to find the way to minimize the side effect caused by those factors. The purpose of this study was to suggest the definite data, which can be used to design and choose the optimal hip implant. Using finite element analysis (FEA), the biomechanical condition of bone cement was evaluated. Stress patterns were analyzed in three conditions: cement mantle, procimal femur and stem-cement contact surface. Additionally, micro-motion was analyzed in the stem-cement contact surface. The 3-D femur model was reconstructed from 2-D computerized tomography (CT) images. Raw CT images were preprocessed by image processing technique (i.e. edge detection). In this study, automated edge detection system was created by MATLAB coding for effective and rapid image processing. The 3-D femur model was reconstructed based on anatomical parameters. The stem shape was designed using that parameters. The analysis of the finite element models was performed with the variation of parameters. The biomechanical influence of each parameter was analyzed and derived optimal parameters. Moreover, the results of FE A using commercial stem model (Zimmer's V erSys) were similar to the results of stem model that was used in this study. Through the study, the improved designs and optimal factors for clinical application were suggested. We expect that the results can suggest solutions to minimize various side effects.

In order to use limestone powder as a material for concrete, the mechanical and durability characteristics of cement matrices manufactured by varying the substitution rate were evaluated. In general, limestone powder did not contribute to the cement hydration reaction, so as a result of the compressive strength test of cement mortar using it, the compressive strength decreased as the substitution rate increased. However, as a result of evaluating the durability performance of cement mortar using limestone powder, such as chloride ion penetration resistance, carbonation resistance, and chemical attack resistance, small particles of limestone powder showed superior results compared to the unsubstituted control mortar due to the micro-filler effect of filling the fine pores inside the cement matrix. Therefore, limestone powder is expected to be used as an effective method for improving the durability of concrete. In this study, the durability was evaluated by changing the mixing amount of limestone powder to 0 %, 5 %, 10 %, and 15 %, but it is judged that it is necessary to study in more detail the effect on the durability by changing the end and mixing amount of limestone powder to various levels in the future.

The rheological properties of fresh concrete significantly influence its manufacturing and performance. However, the diversification of newly developed mixtures and manufacturing techniques has made it challenging to accurately predict these properties using traditional empirical methods. This study introduces a multiscale rheological property prediction model designed to quantitatively anticipate the rheological characteristics from nano-scale interparticle interactions, such as those among cement particles, to micro-scale behaviors, such as those involving fine aggregates. The Yield Stress Model (YODEL), the Chateau-Ovarlez-Trung equation, and the Krieger-Dougherty equation were utilized to predict the yield stress for cement paste and mortar, as well as the plastic viscosity. Initially, predictions were made for the paste scale, using the water-cement ratio (W/C) of the cement paste. These predictions then served as a basis for further forecasting of the rheological properties at the mortar scale, incorporating the same W/C and adding the cement-sand volume ratio (C/S). Lastly, the practicality of the predictive model was assessed by comparing the forecasted outcomes to experimental results obtained from rotational rheometer.

The present study assessed the micro structure and durability characteristics of ternary blended cement with different types of alkali activators. Ground granulated blast furnace slag(GGBS) and ferronickel slag(FNS) was replaced until 50 % of the weight of cement. In addition, potassuim hydroxide and sodium hydroxide were used for comparing the properties of different type of alkali activator. Ternary blended cement with alkali activators showed higher peak portlandite peak than that of OPC(Ordinary Portlande Cement) and non activated ternary blended cement. Also, there was no new hydration products in ternary blended cement or/and alkali activators. Based on the mercury intrustion porosimetry(MIP) test result, ternary blended cement increased macro pore while alkali activated ternary blended cement modified pore structure and increased microp pore as compared to OPC as control. Combination with alkali activators is desirable to enhance the compressive strength and freeze thaw resistance.

Purpose: This study examined the water sorption of commonly used dual-cure resin cements and compared the change in the micro-hardness among the cements. Materials and Methods: Five types of dual-cure resin cements (Maxcem, Duo-link, Panavia F, Variolink II, Rely X Unicem) were selected. Fifty specimens were classified into five groups containing ten specimens in each group. The water sorption of the five specimens in each group was evaluated after being immersed in distilled water (DDW) for seven days. The following results were obtained by comparing the specimens immersed in DDW with those not immersed in DDW. Results: 1. The water sorption of Maxcem showed the highest score, followed by Panavia F. These two cements were followed by Duo-link and Rely X Unicem. The water sorption of Variolink II showed the lowest score among the cements used in this study. 2. Among the specimens not immersed in DDW, the micro-hardness of Rely X Unicem showed the highest score followed by Panavia F and Variolink II. These cements were followed in order by Duo-link and Maxcem. 3. Among the specimens immersed in DDW, the microhardness of Rely X Unicem showed the highest score followed by Maxcem, Panavia F and Variolink II. Duo-link shoed the lowest score among the cements used in this study. 4. Maxcem, Duo-link, Panavia F and Rely X Unicem showed significant differences in micro-hardness due to water resorption but Variolink II was unaffected by immersion in water. Conclusion: Using the resin cement which has lower water sorption and higher micro-hardness is recommended.

Recently nano-materials are gaining more importance in the construction industry due to its enhanced energy efficiency, durability, economy, and sustainability. Nano-silica addition to cement based materials can control the degradation of the fundamental calcium-silicate-hydrate reaction of concrete caused by calcium leaching in water as well as block water penetration and therefore lead to improvements in durability. In this paper, the influence of synthesized nano silica from locally available rice husk on the mechanical properties and corrosion resistant properties of OPC (Ordinary Portland Cement) has been studied by conducting various experimental investigations. Micro structural properties have been assessed by conducting Scanning Electron Microscopy, Thermo gravimetry and Differential Thermal Analysis, X-Ray Diffraction analysis, and FTIR studies. The experimental results revealed that NS reacted with calcium hydroxide crystals in the cement paste and produces Calcium Silicate Hydrate gel which enhanced the strength and acts as a filler which filled the nano pores present in concrete. Hence the strength and corrosion resistant properties were enhanced than the control.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the mechanical and durability characteristics of latex-modified concrete using ultra rapid hardening cement : four types of mechanical tests including compressive strength, modulus of elasticity, flexural strength and bond strength were performed; and seven types of durability tests including resistance of concrete to chloride ion penetration, freeze-thaw resistance, scaling resistance, coefficient of thermal expansion, cracking tendency, abrasion resistance and drying shrinkage were performed. Required material performance of each test was determined in accordance with the Korea specification for repair of concrete and pavement repairing materials. The test results satisfied the required material performances, and presented a good mechanical and durability characteristics. In particularly, the materials showed early development of compressive strength, flexural strength and bond strength at 3 and 4 hours after curing. SEM photos were also taken to investigate the micro structures of the materials after chloride ion penetration test.
The use of ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBFS) from steel industries waste is showing perspective application in civil engineering as partial substitute to cement. Use of such waste conserves natural resources and minimizes the space required for landfill. The GGBFS used in the present work is of ultra fine size and hence serves as micro filler. In this paper strength and durability characteristics of ultra fine slag based high strength concrete (HSC) (with a characteristic compressive strength of 50 MPa) were studied. Cement was replaced with ultra fine slag in different percentages of 5, 10, and 15% to study the compressive strength, porosity, resistances against sulfate attack, sorptivity and chloride ion penetration. The experiments to study compressive strength were conducted for different ages of concrete such as 7, 28, 56, and 90 days. From the detailed investigations with 16 mix combinations, 10% ultra fine slag give better results in terms of strength and durability characteristics.
