Optical Characterizations of $LiNbO_{3}$ Single Crystals Doped with $MgO/TiO_{2}$

  • The applicability of $LiNbO_{3}$ as a substrate for fabrication of Ti-indiffused waveguide electro-optic devices is limited. Ti diffuses comparatively in congruently melting $LiNbO_{3}$; the Curie temperature of this material is too low to permit diffusion temperatures much above $1100^{\circ}C$ without the necessity of re-poling the crystal. Both of hese difficulties could be eliminated by incorporating certain dopants in $LiNbO_{3}$. Crystals of $LiNbO_{3}$ doped with Ti and Mg were grown and evaluated. The electroptic coefficients and birefringence of $LiNbO_{3}$ doped crystals were measured at ${\lambda}=.6328$ and $1.32\;$\mu{m}$. Curie temperatures were measured. The Curie temperature of both undoped and Ti-doped $LiNbO_{3}$ was $1130^{\circ}C$; that for Mg-doped $LiNbO_{3}$ was $30^{\circ}$ higher. From these data, a composition for the crystals was estimated. Thermogravimetric data confirmed this estimate and showed that the composition of Mg : $LiNbO_{3}$ was $49.3{\pm}0.2mole%\;Li_{2}O$ ; the composition of the undoped and Ti : $LiNbO_{3}$ samples was $48.6{\pm}0.2mole%$. Diffusion of Ti into both Mg-doped and Ti-doped $LiNbO_{3}$ crystals was studied as a function of $Li/NbO_{3}$ ratio and temperature.

  • Congruent $LiNbO_3$ crystals with doped Mg and codoped with Mn or Fe were grown by the Czochralski method. It is known that the physical properties of $LiNbO_3$ depend strongly on the addition of Mg and transition metals. This is established by studying the following properties; XRD patterns, the phase transition temperature, energy of the fundamental absorption edge, the shape of the absorption band of the $OH^-$ vibration and lines of the ESR of $Fe^{3+},\; Mn^{2+}$. The position of the UV absorption edge and the shape and peak point of the absorption band of the $OH^-$ vibrational band changed monotonously up to a critical concentration of $Mg^{2+}$ ions. The mechanism of the incorporation of Mg ions changes at this concentration. The transition temperature was estimated by measuring the dielectric temperature behavior up to $1230^{\circ}C$ in a frequency range of 100Hz to 10MHz. EPR of $Mn^{2+}\;and\; Fe^{3+}$ ions were employed to investigated the Mg doping effects in the $LiNbO_3$ crystal. The increase of linewidths and the asymmetry of signals were observed in all crystals. New signals of $Fe^{3+}$ arising from the new centers were observed I the heavily Mg-doped crystals.

  • The electrical and optical properties of the annealed $LiNbO_{3}$ single crystal with congruently melting composition and MgO or ZnO doped $LiNbO_{3}$ single crystal grown by the FZ method. The electrical and optical properties such as electrical conductivity, dielectric constant (Curie temperature), electro-mechanical coupling factor, optical transmittance and refractive indices of the grown crystals were measured and the nonlinear refractive indices of the grown crystals were calculated theoretically. The doping effects of MgO and ZnO were investigated by comparing the electrical and optical properties of the undoped $LiNbO_{3}$ single crystal and those of the $LiNbO_{3}$ single crystals doped with MgO or ZnO.

  • Bulk properties of single crystals $KMnCl_3$ undoped and Mg- doped $LiNbO_3$ were examined by using the neutron scattering technique. This study shows that the good -looking samples by polarized light have to be examined by the. neutron scattering to ensure the bulk properties of single crystal. Large mosaic spread in KMnCb indicated the crystal is not in a single domain. Many parts are relatively randomly directed against crystal axis with close angle each other. For the small mosaic spread of Li~ in the scattering pattern, it is found that some large domains have close orientations. Mg doped Li~ is turned out to be a well grown one.

  • The 5 mol% ZnO doped $LiNbO_3$ film and the 2 mol% MgO doped $LiNbO_3$ film were grown on the $LiNbO_3$ (001) substrate by liquid phase epitaxy (LPE) method with $Li_2CO_3-V_2O_5$ flux system. The crytsallinity and the lattice mismatch between $Zn:LiNbO_3$, film and $Mg:LiNbO_3$, film were analyzed by x-ray rocking curve (XRC). In addition, the ZnO and MgO distribution in the cross-section of the multilayer thin films was observed using electron probe micro analyzer (EPMA).

  • The doping effects of Mg and/or Fe ions on congruent LiNbO$_3$ single crystal growth were studied in order to clarify the roles of MgO in Fe doped LiNbO$_3$ single crystals. The effective distribution coefficienct of Fe was found decreased drastically from 0.85 to 0.5 by the addition of MgO into the LiNbO$_3$ melt. M ssbauer spectra revealed that the addition of MgO reduces the occurrence of Fe2+ ions during growth in air. Therefore, it is likely that there would be two important roles of MgO in Fe doped LiNbO$_3$. One is to suppress the incorporation of all Fe ions, and the other is to reduce the concentration of Fe2+ ions among the total Fe ions.

  • High-quality $Er^{3+}$ doped Mg : $LiNbO_3$single crystal fibers were grown by a micro-pulling down ($\mu$-PD) method. Single crystal fibers were pulled down through the nozzle, at a pulling down rate of 0.5 mm/min and using a Pt crucible with a nozzle 1 mm in diameter in air atmosphere. Defects such as bubbles, cracks and inclusions were not detected in any of the grown crystals. The optical transmission of Er : Mg : $LiNbO_3$crystal was measured and the energy levels of $Er_2O_3$ ion could be calculated. The photoluminescence spectrum of crystal fibers showed an energy band emission with the strongest line corresponding to the $^4I_{3/2}{\to}^4I_{15/2}$transition. The concentration dependence of the entire wavelength region emission intensity upon excitation intensity measured emission intensity for the 3 mol% MgO doped fibers was larger than that for the 1, 5 mol% MgO doped fibers.

Efficient Second Harmonic Generation of Pulsed Nd-YAG Laser Radiation with Noncritically Phase-Matchable $LiNbO_3$ in Room-Temperature

  • 0.65 mol% MgO-doped LiNbO$_3$single crystals were grown by CZ method. The obtained single crystals were colorless and transparent. Noncritically phase-matched second harmonic generation (SHG) of 532-nm radiation from 1064-nm in MgO-doped LiNbO$_3$has been investigated by using pulsed Nd:YAG laser. The phase-matching temperature was room temperature. SHG conversion efficiencies were typically achieved higher than 50% at the phase-matching temperature with no photorefractive damage in the region of fundamental power density which was used in this experiment. The thermo-birefringence coefficient and the electro-birefringence coefficient of SHG were calculated from the temperature phase-matching profile with the electric field.

  • $LiNbO_{3}$ single crystals (undoped, 5 mol% MgO-doped and 5 mol% ZnO-doped) were grown by the floating zone method which has the characteristics of a compositional homogeneity and uniform distribution of the dopants. The optimum growth condition was established experimentally and the defect structures such as domain structure, dislocation structure, slip band, and microtwins were characterized using a microscopic method.
