Spectroscopic and Microstructural Analysis of Phase Transformation of Mg-PSZ/$Al_2O_3$ Fibers Prepared by Sol-Gel Method

  • The Mg-PSZ/$Al_2O_3$ fibers were fabricated by the sol-gel method. The added $Al_2O_3$ amounts were varied from 5 to 20 mol%. The phase transformation studies of a drawn Mg-PSZ/$Al_2O_3$ fibers were investigated by use of X-ray diffraction, IR and Raman spectroscopy. Microstructure and tensile strength of fibers were subjected to scanning electron microscopy and tensile strength tester. When $Al_2O_3$ was added to the Mg-PSZ fibers, it was found out from the analysis of XRD patterns and Raman spectra that a small amount of crystalline spinel($MgAl_2O_4$) started to form due to the reaction between $Al_2O_3$ and MgO, at $1000^{\circ}C$, and the phase transformation temperature of $ZrO_2$ crystal phase at different sintering temperatures increased. Also, the rapid grain growth with average size of 2.0 ${\mu}m$ shown in Mg-PSZ fiber at $1500^{\circ}C$ was considerably suppressed to 0.39 ${\mu}m$ by adding $Al_2O_3$ at the same temperature. When the Mg-PSZ/$Al_2O_3$ fibers containing 5 mol% $Al_2O_3$ were sintered $800^{\circ}C$ for 1 hr, average tensile strength of fibers was 0.9 GPs at diameters of 20 to 30 ${\mu}m$, but as the sintering temperatures was increased to $1000^{\circ}C$ for 1 hr, average tensile strength of fibers increased to 1.2 GPa in the same diameter range.

  • $K^+-{\beta}/{\beta}"-Al_2O_3$ in the ternary system $K_2O-MgO-Al_2O_3$ was directly synthesized by solid state reaction. The phase formation and phase relation were carefully investigated in relation to starting composition, calcining temperature and time, and dispersion medium. The optimal synthetic condition was also examined for the formation of ${\beta}"-Al_2O_3$ phase with a maximum fraction. As a composition range, the mole ratio of $K_2O$ to $Al_2O_3$ was changed from 1:5 to 1:6.2 and the amount of MgO used as a stabilizer was varied from 4.2 wt % to 6.3 wt %. The calcining temperature was selected between $1000^{\circ}C$ and $1500^{\circ}C$. At $1000^{\circ}C$, the ${\beta}/{\beta}"-Al_2O_3$ phases began to form resulted from the combining of ${\alpha}-Al_2O_3$ and $KAlO_2$ and increased with temperature rising. All of ${\alpha}-Al_2O_3$ phase disappeared to be homogenized to the ${\beta}/{\beta}"-Al_2O_3$ phase at $1200^{\circ}C$. Near the temperature at $1300^{\circ}C$, the fraction of ${\beta}"-Al_2O_3$ phase showed a maximum value with the composition of $K_{1.67}Mg_{0.67}Al_{10.33}O_{17}$. At temperatures above $1300^{\circ}C$, the fraction of ${\beta}"-Al_2O_3$ phase decreased gradually owing to $K_2O$ loss caused by a high potassium vapor pressure, and the appropriate calcining time was about 5 hours. Acetone was more effective than distilled water as a dispersion medium for milling and mixing.

  • The effect of the additives, $Y_2O_3$ and MgO, on the sintering and properties of $Al_2O_3-TiC$ composites was investigated. It is known that MgO is used as additive for improving densification and $Y_2O_3$ is applied as sintering aid. In this study, the amounts of TiC were varied in the range of 30-47 wt%. The 0.5 wt% MgO and also varied amounts of $Y_2O_3$ from 0.3 to 1 wt% were added into the composites. The sintering of $Al_2O_3-TiC$ composites was performed in a graphite-heating element furnace at different sintering temperature, 1700 and $1900\;^{\circ}C$, for 2 hr under an argon atmosphere. The results demonstrated that the properties of the composites sintered at $1700\;^{\circ}C$ were much better than those sintered at $1900\;^{\circ}C$. The comparisons on physical properties, mechanical properties and microstructure of composites with and without additives were reported. Comparing with other samples, $Al_2O_3-30wt%TiC$ composites with 0.5wt% MgO and $1\;wt%Y_2O_3$ exhibited the highest density of approximately 98% of theoretical and flexural strength of 302 MPa.

Fabrication and Characteristics of $Al_2O_{3p}$/AC8A Composites by Pressureless Infiltration Process (무가압함침법에 의한 $Al_2O_{3p}$/AC8A 복합재료의 제조 및 특성)

  • The fabrication Process of $Al_2O_{3p}$/AC8A composites by pressureless infiltration technique and the effects of additive Mg content and volume fraction of particulate reinforcement on mechanical and wear properties were investigated. It was found that the bending strength decreased with increasing volume fraction of $Al_2O_{3p}$ particles. Whereas hardness increased with volume fraction of $Al_2O_{3p}$ particles. The decrement of strength in case of high volume fraction of $Al_2O_{3p}$ particles was attributed to high porosity level. In terms of additive Mg content, $Al_2O_{3p}$/AC8A composites containing around 5~7wt% of additive Mg indicated the highest strength, and hardness values increased with additive Mg contents. Wear resistance of AC8A alloy were improved by reinforcement of $Al_2O_{3p}$ particles especially at high sliding velocity. Wear property of $Al_2O_{3p}$/AC8A composites and AC8A alloy exhibited different aspects. $Al_2O_{3p}$/AC8A composites indicated more wear loss than AC8A alloy at slow velocity region. However a transition point of wear loss was found at middle velocity region which shows the minimum wear loss and wear loss at high velocity region exhibited almost same value as at slow velocity region, whereas wear loss of AC8A alloy almost linearly increased with sliding velocity. It was found that $Al_2O_{3p}$/AC8A composites containing $Al_2O_{3p}$ volume fraction of 20% exhibited abrasive wear surface regardless of sliding velocity and $Al_2O_{3p}$/AC8A composites containing $Al_2O_{3p}$ volume fraction of 40% showed slightly adhesive wear surface at low sliding velocity, and it progressed to severe wear as increasing the sliding velocity.

  • 본 연구에서는 AC-PDP의 MgO박막의 특성을 개선하기 위하여 MgO재료에 $Al_2O_3$, CaO, BaO도핑을 하여 MgO 박막을 증착하였다. $Al_2O_3$, CaO, BaO가 도핑된 MgO 박막의 기초특성을 실험하였고 AC-PDP에서 면방전 구동시 휘도 및 효율의 개선과 대항방전 구동에서의 방전지연을 개선하였다. 특히, $Al_2O_3$ 200ppm, CaO 200ppm 일때 효율의 상승, CaO 200ppm, BaO 100ppm 일 때 방전늦음이 개선되었다. 이는 MgO재료에 $Al_2O_3$, CaO, BaO등 여러가지 재료의 도핑시에는 적정의 도핑함량이 있는 것으로 보여진다.

  • Abstract The growth and dissolution behaviour of reaction phase was studied during dissolution reaction between sintered alumina and $CaMgSiO_4$ at $1600^{\circ}C$ for various times. The formation of $CaO{\cdot}6Al_2O_3$ an intermediate reaction phase, and $CaMgSiO_4$ spinel, the final reaction product were observed during dissolution reaction of alumina into $CaMgSiO_4$ liquid phase. The growth and dissolution shape of $CaO{\cdot}6Al_2O_3$, an intermediate phase, was quite different.

  • Nanopowders of MgO, $Al_2O_3$ and $SiO_2$ were made by high-energy ball milling. The fast sintering of nanostructured $Al_2O_3-MgSiO_3-SiO_2$ composites was investigated from mechanically activated powders of MgO, $Al_2O_3$ and $SiO_2$ by a pulsed-current activated sintering process. Nanocrystalline materials have received much attention as advanced engineering materials with improved physical and mechanical properties; in particular greater strength, hardness, excellent ductility and toughness. Highly dense nanostructured $Al_2O_3- MgSiO_3-SiO_2$ composites were produced with simultaneous application of 80 MPa and pulsed output current of 2800A within 2 minutes. The sintering behavior, grain size and mechanical properties of $Al_2O_3-MgSiO_3-SiO_2$ composites were investigated.

The effect of grain shape on grain growth behavior of oxide system during liquid phase sintering (산화물계의 액상소결에서 입자 형상이 입자성장 거동에 미치는 영향)

  • The effect of grain shape on the grain growth behavior of oxide system was investigated as afunction of liquid content during liquid phase sintering. As a model system, the solid grains of $Al_{2}O_{3}$ and MgO were selected during liquid phase sintering, i.e. faceted shape of $Al_{2}O_{3}$ in $CaAl_{2}Si_{2}O_{8}$ liquid phase and spherical shape of MgO in $CaMgSiO_{4}$ liquid phase. The average grain size of MgO with spherical shape was decreased with increasing the liquid phase content, whereas that of $Al_{2}O_{3}$ with faceted shape was independent of liquid phase content. In the case of $Al_{2}O_{3}$ grains with faceted shape, which interfaces are expected to be atomically flat, are likely to grow by the interfacial reaction controled process. Whereas, in the case of MgO grains with spherical shape, which interface are expected to be atomically rough, are likely to grow by the diffusion controlled process.

  • Effect of the microwave dielectric properties and the microstructure on a mole fraction(x=0.1~0.9) of (1-x)Mg$_2$SiO$_4$-xZnAl$_2$O$_4$ ceramics was investigated. When (1-x)Mg$_2$SiO$_4$-xZnAl$_2$O$_4$(x=0.1~0.9) ceramics were sintered at 130$0^{\circ}C$, 135$0^{\circ}C$ and 140$0^{\circ}C$ for 2hr, the microwave dielectric properties were obtained $\varepsilon$r=6.8~8.3, Q.f$_{0}$=36000~77600. On the other hand, the temperature coefficients of resonant frequency($\tau$$_{f}$) were obtained in the properties of -62ppm/$^{\circ}C$ to -49ppm/$^{\circ}C$. In order to adjust the temperature coefficient of resonant frequency($\tau$$_{f}$), CaTiO$_3$was added in (1-x)Mg$_2$SiO$_4$-xZnAl$_2$O$_4$ceramics. 0.7Mg$_2$SiO$_4$-0.2ZnAl$_2$O$_4$-0.1CaTiO$_3$ceramics sintered at 135$0^{\circ}C$ for 2hr showed the excellent microwave dielectric properties of $\varepsilon$r=7.7, Q.f$_{0}$=32000, and $\tau$$_{f}$=-7.9 ppm/$^{\circ}C$.EX>.>.EX>.

Sintering Behavior of Al2O3-15v/o ZrO2(+3m/o Y2O3) Ceramics Prepared by Precipitation Method (침전법으로 제조한 Al2O3-15v/o ZrO2(+3m/o Y2O3)계 세라믹스의 소결거동)

  • Al2O3/ZrO2 composites were prepared by precipitation method using Al2(SO4)3.18H2O, ZrOCl2.8H2O and YCl3.6H2O as starting materials and NH4OH as a precipitation agent. Al2O3/ZrO2 composites(series A) were prepared by mixing Al2O3 powder obtained by single precipitation method with ZrO2(+3m/o Y2O3) powder obtained by co-predipitation method. Al2O3/ZrO2 composites (series B) were prepared by co-precipitation method using the three starting materials. In all cases, the composition was controlled as Al2O3-15v/o ZrO2(+3m/o Y2O3). The composites of series A showed higher final relative densities than those of series B and tetagonal ZrO2 in all cases was retained to about 95% at room temperature. ZrO2 particles were coalesced more rapidly in grain boundary of Al2O3 than within Al2O3 grain. ZrO2 particles were located at 3-and 4-grain junction of Al2O3 and limited the grain growth of Al2O3. It was observed that MgO contributed to densification of Al2O3 but limited grain growth of Al2O3 by MgO was not remarkable. In all Al2O3/ZrO2 composites, exaggerated grain growth of Al2O3 was not observed and Al2O3/ZrO2 composites were found to have homogeneous microstructures.
