  • In polished barley of 22 varieties protein content was correlated significantly with MgO of $P_2O_5$ content (at p=0. 01), $K_2O$ (at p=0. 05), but it was not related to CaO. Dye binding capacity was correlated significantly (at p=0. 01) with MgO or $P_2O_5$. Thus MgO could be used for mass screening of protein content. Carbohydrate content showed insignificant negative correlation coefficients with above four minerals. There were significant positive correlation (at p=0. 01) among $P_2O_5$, $K_2O$ and MgO. The mean contents of $K_2O$, $P_2O_5$, MgO and CaO were 0. 03, 0. 29, 0. 084 and 0. 043%, respectively.

Estimation on Chemical Water Quality Suitability Index for 4 Species of the Mayfly Genus Ephemera (Ephemeroptera: Ephemeridae) Using Probability Distribution Models (확률분포모형을 이용한 하루살이속(Ephemera) 4종에 대한 화학적 수질 적합도지수 평가)

  • Chemical water quality suitability for species (Ephemera strigata, Ephemera separigata, and Ephemera orientalis-sachalinensis group) of the mayfly genus Ephemera (Order Ephemeroptera) was analyzed with probability distribution models (Exponential, Normal, Lognormal, Logistic, Weibull, Gamma, Beta, Gumbel). Data was collected from 23,957 sampling units of 6,664 sites in Korea from 2010 to 2021. E. orientalis-sachalinensis occurred at the range of BOD5 0.3~11.1 mg/L (the best-fit Lognormal model); T-P 0.007~0.769 mg/L (the Gumbel model); TSS 0.4~142.2 mg/L (the Lognormal model). E. strigata occurred at the range of BOD5 0.4~7.4 mg/L (the Gumbel model); T-P 0.007~0.254 mg/L (the Lognormal model); TSS 0.4~17.1 mg/L (the Lognormal model). E. separigata occurred at the range of BOD5 0.4~2.6 mg/L (the R-Weibull model); T-P 0.007~0.134 mg/L (the Lognormal model); TSS 0.7~10.0 mg/L (the Lognormal model). Habitat suitability range of E. orientalis-sachalinensis was estimated to be 0.4~1.9 mg/L (BOD5), 0.024~0.086 mg/L (T-P), 2.5~22.4 mg/L (TSS); that of E. strigata was 0.4~0.7 mg/L (BOD5), 0.007~0.018 mg/L (T-P), 0.0~1.7 mg/L (TSS); that of E. separigata was 0.0~0.4 mg/L (BOD5), 0.000~0.015 mg/L (T-P), 0.5~3.1 mg/L (TSS). In a relative comparision, E. orientalis-sachalinensis was estimated to be eurysaprobic, and narrowly adapted in high levels of T-P and TSS, E. strigata was estimated to be oligosaprobic and adapted in low levels of T-P and TSS, and E. separigata was estimated to be stenooligosaprobic and widely adapted in low level of T-P and TSS.

Antihypertensive activity of Zingiber officinale and Korean ginseng in experimentally induced hypertension in rats

  • We investigated the antihypertensive effect of Pet ether extract (PE) of ginger rhizome; its toluene fraction (TF) and Korean ginseng extract (KGE) in deoxycorticosterone acetate (DOCA) - salt induced and fructose induced hypertensive rats. In DOCA model, DOCA (25 mg/kg, once a week; s.c) was administered in uninephrectomised animals for 4 w. PE (50 mg/kg/day; p.o), TF (10 mg/kg/day; p.o) and KGE (30 mg/kg/day; p.o) were evaluated for their antihypertensive effect. In the fructose model, drinking water was replaced with fructose (10%) for five weeks to induce hypertension. PE (50 mg/kg/day; p.o) and KGE (30 mg/kg/day; p.o) were assessed for its antihypertensive effect in fructose model. After completion of the treatment schedule, vascular reactivity to various agonists like 5-HT, noradrenaline, adrenaline, phenylbiguanide and acetylcholine were recorded in rats of both the models. A cumulative dose response curve (CDRC) of 5-HT was carried out in isolated rat fundus strip of the fructose induced hypertensive rats. Chronic administration of PE (50 mg/kg/day; p.o), TF (10 mg/kg/day; p.o), and KGE (30 mg/kg/day; p.o) significantly reduced the blood pressure in DOCA salt whereas PE (50 mg/kg/day; p.o) and KGE (30 mg/kg/day; p.o) reduced the blood pressure in fructose induced hypertensive rats. Treatment with PE (50 mg/kg/day; p.o) and KGE (30 mg/kg/day; p.o) in fructose model for five weeks shifted the CDRC towards the right on rat fundus. The mechanism of action may partly involve the serotonergic antagonistic property.

  • Bacillus stearothemophilus isolated from soil was identified to express multiple extracellular xylanases. Two HindIII restriction fragments of 5.4 and 6.4 kb from B. stearothermophilus genomic DNA were cloned into pBR322 to obtain recombinant plasmids pMG0l and pMG02, respectively, which enabled E. coli HBlOl cells to produce $\beta$-D-xylosidase activity. By subcloning into pUC18 and Southern blotting, the loci of the $\beta$-D-xyiosidase genes were elucidated to be on non-homologous DNA fragments of 2.2 kb from pMGOl(pMG1) and 1.0 kb from pMG02(pMG2), respectively. The two enzymes produced in E. coli cleaved xylobiose, xylotriose, xylotetrose and xylotetrose to produce xylose as a major end product. The gene on pMG1, distinct from that on pMG2 was observed to encode a bifunctional protein that displayed both P-D-xylosidase (EC.3.2.1.37) and a-L-arabinofuranosidase activities (EC.3.2.1.55).

  • A survey on nutrient recovery by rice plant was carried out countrywide in 1967 and 1968. The relationships between percent recovery of fertilizer nutrient and climatic zone or deposition mode, drainage grade, and texture of paddy soil profile, or chemical characteristics of surface soil were as follows. 1. The percent recovery of fertilizer nitrogen was highest in south and least in north, and that of potassium was highest in south and least in middle climatic zone. 2. Since the percent recovery of Phosphorus variates yearly with climatic zone, mode of deposition drainage grade or soil texture, it seemed to depend greatly on soil-weather interaction. 3. Nitrogen recovery was highest in alluvial colluvial (AC) and it was followed by alluvial (A), fluvomarine (FM) and old alluvial in decreasing order while potassium recovery was OA>AC>A>FM. 4. The greater the drainage was, the higher the nitrogen recovery. The recovery of potassium and phosphorus tended to show high in moderately well drain, and low in poorly and well drain. 5. Nitrogen recovery was highest in fine silty and gradually decreased with coarseness. That of potassium or phosphorus was greater in those below fine loamy than in those above coarse silty. 6. Nitrogen recovery was high in Jisan, Geugrag, and Sindab series, and low in Hwadong, Gyuam, Yongji and Hwabong series. 7. Nitrogen recovery showed significant positive correlation with the content of organic matter (OM), Ca, CEC of surface soil and only in the year of high phosphorus recovery it had significant negative correlation with soil phosphorus. Phosphorus recovery had significant posititive correlation with CEC, Mg or Ca. 8. Potassium recovery showed negative correlation with K/(Ca+Mg), P, OM or K while positive correlation with Ca, Mg, CEC but significant only with K/(Ca+Mg) in the year of low potassium recovery. In the year of high K recovery it showed positive correlation with P, OM, K/(Ca+Mg) or K while negative with CEC, Mg or Ca but significant only with P, OM or CEC. Soil potassium has significant positive correlation with soil OM and P only in the year of low potassium recovery. 9. The percent recovery of N, P or K showed negative correlation coefficient with pH without significant. 10. There was significant positive correlation between OM and P, K or K/(Ca+Mg), P and K or K/(Ca+Mg), K and K/(Ca+Mg), Mg or CEC, Ca and K/(Ca+Mg), Mg, CEC or pH, Mg and CEC while significant negative correlation between Mg and OM, P or K/(Ca+Mg), P and CEC, Ca and K/(Ca+Mg). 11. From the percent rcovery of fertilizer and soil chemical characteristics it was known that soil organic matter increase nitrogen uptake, that K uptake has closer relation to K/(Ca+Mg) than K, that Mg affects P ugtake, and that the annual difference of P and K recovery was partly explainable.

Enhanced Nimodipine Bioavailability After Oral Administration of Nimodipine with Morin, a Flavonoid, in Rabbits

  • The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of morin on the bioavailability of nimodipine after administering nimodipine (15 mg/kg) orally to rabbits either co-administered or pretreated with morin (2, 10 and 20 mg/kg). The plasma concentrations of nimodipine in the rabbits pretreated with morin were increased significantly (p<0.05 at 10 mg/kg, p<0.01 at 20 mg/kg) compared with the control, but the plasma concentrations of nimodipine co-administered with morin were not significant. The areas under the plasma concentration-time curve (AUC) and the peak concentrations $(C_{max})$ of the nimodipine in the rabbits pretreated with morin were significantly higher (p<0.05 at 10 mg/kg, p<0.01 at 20 mg/kg), but only the $C_{max}$ of nimodipine coadministered with morin 10 mg/kg was increased significantly (p<0.05). The absolute bioavailability $(A.B\%)$ of nimodipine in the rabbits pretreated with morin was significantly (p<0.05 at 10 mg/kg, p<0.01 at 20 mg/kg) higher $(54.1-65.0\%)$ than the control $(36.7\%)$. The increased bioavailability of nimodipine in the rabbits pretreated with morin might have been resulted from the morin, which inhibits the efflux pump P-glycoprotein and the first-pass metabolizing enzyme by cytochrome P-450 3A4 (CYP 3A4).

Teratological Evaluation of Azinphos-Methyl in Rat Fetuses (Azinphos-methyl이 랫트 태아에 미치는 기형학적 연구)

  • This study was carried out to investigate the teratological potential of azinphos-methyl in the rat fetuses and to establish the nature of the effects on organogenesis and intrauterine development. The Sprague-Dawley female rats (180-210g) without previous litter were used in this study. Azinphos-methyl dosages of 0.094mg/kg, 0.4mg/kg, 1.5mg/kg were selected based on the acute intragastric $LD_{50}$ of 15mg/kg in the rat. Azinphos-methyl in water (Treatment Group), non-treatment control (Negative Control), water control (Sham Control), were administered by oral route and aqueous solution of acetyl salicylic acid (Positive Control) was administered by gavage at rate of 10 ml/kg of body weight from day 6 through 15. The results obtained were summarized as follows. 1. Decreased body weight of dams was observed in animals treated with aspirin and azinphos-methyl 1.5 mg/kg from day 7 through 14. (P<0.01) 2. There was an apparent decrement in the absolute liver weight in the azinphos-methyl 1.5 mg/kg treated group (P<0.05). However, the absolute and relative kidney weight in aspirin group (P<0.05, P<0.01) and the absolute and relative ovary weight in aspirin, azinphos-methyl treatment groups (P<0.01, P<0.05) were increased. 3. Decreased protein contents of dam's liver was observed in the aspirin and high dose azinphos-methyl treated group of animals (P<0.01). 4. The number of male-female ratio per dam increased in azinphos-methyl 1.5 mg/kg group but there was an apparent decrement in the body weight of fetuses in aspirin and high dose azinphos-methyl group (P<0.01, P<0.05). Total immature and resorbed fetuses were increased in aspirin group and the number of dead fetuses were also increased in azinphos-methyl 1.5mg/kg treated group of animals. (P<0.01, P<0.05). 5. In soft tissue defects, diaphragmatic hernia in diaphragm, anophthalmia, enlarged olfactory bulb, hydrocephalus, absence of third and lateral ventricle in skull, hydronephrosis in kidney, atrophy of left ventricle wall, enlarged apex in heart were observed. Especially, defects of diaphragm, heart and eye ball showed peak incidences in the high dose azinphosmethyl and aspirin group. (P<0.01). 6. Variations in the ossification patterns of skull, sternebrae, tail, forelimbs and hindlimbs showed peak incidences in the aspirin and high dose azinphos-methyl group. (P<0.01). 7. In the developmental indices of offspring, the mortality of aspirin and azinphos-methyl 1.5mg/kg treated group was higher than that of negative control. And, there was an apparent decrement in the body weight of fetuses (P<0.01) and considerable differences were obtained in pivoting, development of fur, auditory function, vision, quadrupled muscle development and testes descent in aspirin and azinphos-methyl 1.5mg/kg group. Association of ionized magnesium, total magnesium, gestational age, and intraventricular hemorrhage in preterm babies (미숙아에서 이온화 마그네슘, 총 마그네슘과 재태 연령과의 관계 및 뇌실 내 출혈과의 관계)

  • Purpose:The pathophysiology of magnesium, the second highest common compound in humans, is still unclear, especially in preterm babies. We accessed the association between total magnesium (tMg), ionized Mg (iMg), and gestational age (GA) and that between serum magnesium (sMg) and intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH) in preterm babies. Methods:In all, 119 inborn preterm infants admitted between July 2006 and February 2008 were divided into the IVH group (19) and the control group (100) and were prospectively analyzed. TMg, iMg, pH, total calcium (tCa), and ionized Ca (iCa) levels were determined immediately after delivery or within 3 hours after birth, and their correlation with GA were investigated. Results:TMg was not correlated with GA, tCa, iCa, and pH. IMg was correlated with tMg (r=0.288, P=0.002) and iCa (r=0.212, P=0.021); however, it was not correlated with GA and pH. Mean GA and birth weight were significantly lower (P=0.002) and smaller (P=0.030) in the IVH group. Mean sMg was higher in the IVH group ($2.5{\pm}0.9mg/dL$) than in the control group ($2.1{\pm}0.6mg/dL$) (P=0.021). SMg was a risk factor even after logistic regression analysis (OR, 2.798; 95% C.I., 1.265-6.192; P=0.011). Conclusion:In less than 37-week-old preterm babies, tMg and iMg were similar, regardless of GA. High sMg may be a risk factor for IVH in premature babies, regardless of their exposure to antenatal magnesium.

The Chemical Composition of Barley and Wheat Varieties (용도가 다른 보리와 밀 3품종의 영양성분)

  • The chemical components of barley (Jinmichapssal, Seodunchal, and Dusan No.8) and wheat (Alchanmil, Tapdongmil, and Olgeurumil) varieties were determined in terms of proximate compositions, minerals, fatty acids, amino acids and vitamin. There are significant differences in protein and lipid (p<0.00l, respectively), fiber (p<0.05) of barleys. There are significant differences in lipid contents (p<0.00l) of wheats. The major minerals of barley were Ca 24∼31 mg%, P 117∼129 mg%, Fe 1.7∼2.9 mg%, Na 13∼18 mg%, K 227∼73 mg%, Zn 1.1∼1.2 mg%, and Mg 38∼45 mg%. The content of Ca in Jinmichapssal was significantly higher than those in the other varieties (p<0.00l). The mineral contents of wheat were Ca 39∼67 mg%, P 172∼270 mg%, Fe 3.7∼5.6 mg%, Na 15∼17 mg%, K 537∼558 mg%, Zn 2.1∼2.3 mg% and Mg 106∼127 mg%. There are significant differences in Ca, P, Fe and Mg of 3 kinds of wheat. The barleys contain vitamin B$_1$ 0.27∼0.36 mg%, vitamin B$_2$ 0.07∼0.11 mg% and niacin 1.21∼1.44 mg%. The content of vitamin B$_1$ in Jinmichapssal and Seodunchal was significantly higher than that in Dusan No.8 (p<0.0l). The content of vitamin B$_2$ in Seodunchal (0.11 mg%) was significantly higher than those in the other varieties (p<0.0l). The content of niacin in barleys was no significant differences. The wheats contain vitamin B$_1$ 0.41∼0.52 mg%, vitamin B$_2$ 0.29∼0.39 mg% and niacin 1.86∼2.81 mg%. The contents of vitamin B$_2$ in Olgeurumil (0.39 mg%) and niacin in Tapdongmil (2.81 mg%) were considerably higher than those in the other varieties. The contents of vitamin B$_1$, B$_2$, niacin in wheats were higher than those of barleys. Major fatty acids in barley and wheat varieties were linoleic acid, palmitic acid and oleic acid, which comprised of about 90%∼92% of total fatty acid. The contents of lysine, valine, and tryptophan in Dusan No.8 were significantly higher than those in the other varieties. The contents of lysine, isoleucine in Tapdongmil were significantly lower than those in the other varieties. The content of amino acid in wheat was higher than those of barleys.

The Study on the Wear-Corrosion Behavior of Al-Mg Alloy in the Coast (연안해안에서 Al-Mg 합금재 프로펠러의 마멸-부식거동에 관한 연구)

  • This paper reports the studies on the wear-corrosion behavior of Al-Mg alloy in various pH environments. In various pH of sea water, corrosion and wear-corrosion loss of Al-Mg alloy were investigated. Also, the polarization test of Al-Mg alloy using potentiostat/galvanostat was carried out. And the rubbed surface of Al-Mg alloy using scanning electron micrographs after wear-corrosion test was examined in various pH values of sea water. The main results are as following : The polarization resistance of Al-Mg alloy in pH 4 solution is higer than that in pH 6.7 solution, and the corrosion current density in pH 4 is controlled than in pH 6.7 solution. The wear-corrosion loss of Al-Mg alloy with lowering pH becomes sensitive. As the oxide product of Al-Mg alloy appears granular structure and exholiation phenomenon, wear-corrosion loss of Al-Mg alloy increases.
