  • The hydriding and dehydriding properties of a Mg-10wt.%Ni mixture, mechanically-alloyed in order to improve the hydriding and dehydriding kinetics of pure Mg, were investigated. The $Mg_2Ni$ phase develops along with hydriding-dehydriding cycling. The principal effects of mechanical alloying in a planetary mill and hydriding-dehydriding cycling are considered to be the augmentation in the density of defects and the enlargement in the specific surface area. The mechanically-alloyed Mg-10wt.%Ni mixture is activated easily. It has much higher hydriding rate and hydrogen-storage capacity and relatively high dehydriding rate as compared with the pure Mg, the Mg-10wt.%Ni alloy, the Mg-25wt.%Ni alloy and the $Mg_2Ni$ alloy.

  • The hydrogen-storage properties of a mechanically-alloyed Mg-18wt.%Ni mixture were investigated. Among the mixtures mechanically alloyed for 1h, 3h, and 6h, the mixture mechanically alloyed for 6h(MA 6h sample) shows the best properties of activation, hydriding, and dehydriding. The $Mg_2Ni$ phase forms in the mechanically-alloyed Mg-18wt.%Ni mixture along with hydriding-dehydriding cycling. The MA 6h sample is relatively easily activated and has higher hydriding rate than the pure Mg, the Mg-10wt.%Ni alloy, and a little lower hydriding rate than the $Mg_2Ni$alloy. The MA 6h sample lower dehydriding rate than the $Mg_2$Ni alloy but higher dehydriding rate than the pure Mg and the Mg-25wt.%Ni alloy. The MA 6h sample has larger hydrogen-storage capacity than the pure Mg and the other alloys.

  • Samples with the compositions of Mg-10wt.%Ni and Mg-25wt.%Ni were prepared by mechanical alloying in a planetary mill. $Mg_2Ni$ phase was formed in the mixture with hydriding dehydriding cycling. The activation of Mg-10wt.%Ni and Mg-25wt.%Ni was completed after n=7 and n=6 around, respectively, at 583K, $0{\sim}8barH_2$. Mg-10wt.% Ni and Mg-25wt. %Ni are considered as excellent hydrogen-storage materials with very high hydriding rates, high dehydriding rates and relatively large hydrogen-storage capacity. The effets of mechanical alloying and hydriding dehydriding cycling are considered the augmentation in the density of active nucleation sites and the diminution in the particle size.

  • The variation of the hydrogen-storage properties of Mg contained in the mechanically-allyed mixture with the weight percentage of nickel in the sample is investigated. The weight percentage of nickel transformed into the Mg2Ni phase, on the basis of the nickel weight, is highest in the Mg-10 wt.%Ni sample. For the first hydriding cycle, the effect of mechanical alloying on the hydriding rate of Mg is highest in the Mg-25 wt.%Ni sample. After activation, the effects of mechanical alloying and hydriding-dehydriding cycling on the hydriding rate of Mg are highest in the Mg-10 wt.%Ni sample. After sufficient hydriding-dehydriding cycling, the effects on the hydrogen-storage capacity of Mg are highest in the Mg-10 wt.%Ni sample. The effects on the hydriding and dehydriding rates of Mg are highest in the Mg-25wt.%Ni sample. Mg-25wt.%Ni, followed by Mg-10 wt.%Ni, is the optimum composition which has the best effects on the hydrogen-storage properties of Mg contained in the sample. The mechanical alloying and the hydriding-dehydriding cycling produce many defects, which can act as active nucleation sites, and increase the specific surface area, shortening the diffusion distance of hydrogen.

  • Effects of the surface fluorination on the electrochemical charge-discharge properties of $Mg_2$Ni electrode in Ni-MH batteries fabricated by mechanical alloying were investigated. After 20h ball milling, Mg and Ni powder formed nanocrystalline $Mg_2$Ni. Discharge capacity of this alloy increased greatly at first one cycle, but due to the formation of Mg(OH)$_2$ passive layer, it showed a rapid degradation in alkaline solution within 10cyc1es. In case of 6N KOH +xN KF electrolyte (x = 0.5, 1, 2), a continuous and stable fluorinated layer formed by adding excess F$^{[-10]}$ ion, increased durability of $Mg_2$Ni electrode greatly and high rate discharge capability(90-100mAh/g). 2N KF addition led to the highest durability of all tested here. The reason of the improvement is due to thin MgF$_2$, which can prevent the $Mg_2$Ni electrode from forming Mg(OH)$_2$layer that is the main cause of degradation.

  • The $Mg_2Ni$ hydrogen storage alloys which have much higher theoretical discharge capacity than $AB_5$ and $AB_2$ type alloys were synthesized by mechanical alloying with some additives and subjected to the electrochemical measurements. Two different processes were employed to the synthesis of $Mg_2Ni$ alloys with using the high energy ball mill SPEX 8000. One was only ball milling, 12 hrs, the Mg and Ni powders for 12 hrs with additives such as $AB_5$, Ni, Co and Cu powders. In the other process the Mg and Ni powders were ball milled for 1 hr first and then heat treated at $300{\sim}400^{\circ}C$ for 1 hr to get $Mg_2Ni$ alloy, and finally the $Mg_2Ni$ alloy powders were ball milled with the additives for 12 hrs. The alloy powders prepared were compacted at room temperature under $7.64tons/cm^2$ into disk type electrodes for the electrochemical measurements. The experimntal results showed that the electrodes prepared with the heat treated alloy powders had a higher discharge capacities than those without heat treatment. The addition of Ni caused an increase of the discharge capacity and the addition of Co improved the cycling characteristics. The electrode prepared by ball milling of $Mg_2Ni$ and 10wt% Ni powders has showed the highest discharge capacity, 546mAh/g.alloy, which was 55% of the theoretical capacity.

  • The eutectic Mg-23.5%Ni alloy was casted by melting and solidification. The powders of Mg-23.5%Ni and (Mg-23.5%Ni)-10% iron oxide were prepared by mechanical grinding of casted Mg-Ni alloy and casted Mg-Ni alloy+oxide, respectively. As milling time increases, hydriding and dehydriding rates of Mg-Ni and Mg-Ni-oxide alloy powders increase. The additions of iron oxide to Mg-Ni alloy and Mg-Ni-oxide increase hydriding rates and slightly decrease dehydriding rates.

  • The optimum powder to ball ratio was examined, which is one of the important conditions in reactive mechanical grinding processing. Yttria (Y2O3)-stabilized zirconia (ZrO2) (YSZ), Ni, and graphene were chosen as additives to enhance the hydriding and dehydriding rates of Mg. Samples with a composition of 92.5 wt% Mg + 2.5 wt% YSZ + 2.5 wt% Ni + 2.5 wt% graphene (designated as Mg-2.5YSZ-2.5Ni-2.5graphene) were prepared by grinding in hydrogen atmosphere. Mg-2.5YSZ-2.5Ni-2.5graphene had a high effective hydrogen-storage capacity of almost 7 wt% (6.85 wt%) at 623 K in 12 bar H2 at the second cycle (n = 2). Mg-2.5YSZ-2.5Ni-2.5graphene contained Mg2Ni phase after hydriding-dehydriding cycling. Mg-2.5YSZ-2.5Ni-2.5graphene had a larger quantity of hydrogen absorbed for 60 min, Ha (60 min), than Mg-2.5Ni-2.5graphene and Mg-2.5graphene. The addition of YSZ also increased the initial dehydriding rate and the quantity of hydrogen released for 60 min, Hd (60 min), compared with those of Mg-2.5Ni-2.5graphene. Y2O3-stabilized ZrO2, Ni, and graphene-added Mg had a higher initial hydriding rate and a larger Ha (60 min) than Fe2O3, MnO, or Ni and Fe2O3-added Mg at n = 1.

  • A 76.5wt%Mg - 23.5wt%Ni (Mg-23.5Ni) sample was prepared by reactive mechanical grinding (RMG) and its hydriding and dehydriding properties were then investigated. Activation of the Mg-23.5Ni sample was completed only after two hydriding (under 12 bar $H_2$) - dehydriding (under 1.0 bar $H_2$) cycles at 593K. The reactive mechanical grinding of Mg with Ni is considered to facilitate nucleation and shorten diffusion distances of hydrogen atoms. After hydriding - dehydriding cycling, the Mg-23.5Ni sample contained Mg2Ni phase.

  • The charge-discharge characteristics of the $Mg_2Ni-x$ wt.%Nd (x = 0~3) electrodes were investigated. The electrodes were prepared by the mechanical grinding of the induction-melted $Mg_2Ni$ alloy powders with Ni and/or Nd using planetary ball mill apparatus. The discharge capacity of the $Mg_2Ni$ alloy increased with the increase in the nickel content. The electrode possessing 100 wt.% nickel powder showed the initial capacity of 760 mAh/g and the capacity decay with the cycle number was less than that of the 55 wt.% nickel powder. The Nd was added to this composition. It was found that the $Mg_2Ni-100$ wt.%Ni -0.2 wt.%Nd alloy showed an excellent charge-discharge cycle characteristics compared with the other reported Mg-Ni alloy system. The discharge capacity was 400 mAh/g after 70 cycles. Such an improved cycle life seems to be attributed to the improvement in the corrosion characteristics of the alloy. The anodic polarization curve of the $Mg_2Ni-100$ wt.%Ni-0.2 wt.%Nd alloy exhibited better passivating behavior than that of the $Mg_2Ni-100$ wt.%Ni.
