  • In this study, comparison of corrosion properties of the Mg-1.5Ge-1Zn (GZ21) alloy and Mg-9Al-1Zn (AZ91) alloy were investigated. The studied alloys were fabricated by permanent mold casting method. And the potentiodynamic test, hydrogen evolution test, immersion test and A.C Impedance test were carried out in a 3.5% NaCl solution with pH7.2 at room temperature to measure the corrosion properties. The microstructure of GZ21 alloy was composed of ${\alpha}-Mg$ and $Mg_2Ge$ phases and AZ91 alloy was composed of ${\alpha}-Mg$ and $Mg_{17}Al_{12}$ phases. From the test results, the corrosion property was improved by adding Ge. It seemed that the corrosion mechanism was changed from galvanic corrosion (AZ91) to filiform corrosion (GZ21).

  • The magnesium-base AZ61 alloy was cast while adding 1% CaO powder into the melt. It was hot extruded, and oxidized at $550-650^{\circ}C$ in air in order to study its microstructure and oxidation behavior. Initially added CaO powder reacted with Al in the melt to $Al_2Ca$ particles that aligned along the extrusion direction. The formed $Al_2Ca$ particles increased the oxidation resistance through forming the superficial CaO scale at the upper part of the thin MgO oxide scale.

  • This study was performed to investigate types and formation mechanism of cracks in two Al alloy welds, A5083 and A7NO1 spot-welded by pulse Nd: YAG laser, using SEM, EPMA and Micro-XRD. In the weld zone, three types of crack were observed: center line crack($C_{C}$), diagonal crack($C_{D}$), and U shape crack($C_{U}$). Also, HAZ crack($C_{H}$), was observed in the HAZ region, furthermore, mixing crack($C_{M}$), consisting of diagonal crack and HAZ crack was observed.White film was formed at the hot crack region in the fractured surface after it was immersed to 10%NaOH water. In the case of A5083 alloy, white films in C crack and $C_D crack region were composed of low melting phases, Fe₂Si$Al_8$ and eutectic phases, Mg₂Al₃ and Mg₂Si. Such films observed near HAZ crack were also consist of eutectic Mg₂Al₃. In the case of A7N01 alloy, eutectic phases of CuAl₂, $Mg_{32}$ (Al,Zn) ₃, MgZn₂, Al₂CuMg and Mg₂Si were observed in the whitely etched films near $C_{C}$ crack and $C_{D}$ crack regions. The formation of liquid films was due to the segregation of Mg, Si, Fe in the case of A5083 alloy and Zn, Mg, Cu, Si in the case of A7N01 aooly, respectively. The $C_{D}$ and $C_{C}$ cracks were regarded as a result of the occurrence of tensile strain during the welding process. The formation of $C_{M}$ crack is likely to be due to the presence of liquid film at the grain boundary near the fusion line in the base metal as well as in the weld fusion zone during solidification. The $C_{U}$ crack is considered a result of the collapsed keyhole through incomplete closure during rapid solidification. (Received October 7, 1999)

  • Al1050 and Al7075 alloy specimens were exposed to atmospheric conditions for 24 months and analyzed by Transmission Electron Microscopy to characterize their corrosion behavior and oxide film characteristics, especially focusing on intergranular corrosion or oxidation. In general, the intergranular oxygen penetration depth of Al1050 was deeper than Al7075. Since O and Si signals were overlapped at the oxidized grain boundaries of Al1050 and Mg is not included in Al1050, it is concluded that Si segregated along the grain boundaries directly impacts on the intergranular corrosion of Al1050. Cr-Si or Mg-Si intermetallic particles were not observed along the grain boundaries of Al7050, but Mg-Si particle was barely observed in the matrix. 10-nm size Mg-Zn particles were also found all over the matrix. Mg was mainly observed along the oxidized grain boundary of Al7075, but Si was not detected due to the Mg-Si particle formation in the matrix and relatively low concentration of Si in Al7075. Therefore, it is thought that Mg plays an important role in the intergranular corrosion of Al7075 under atmospheric corrosion conditions.

  • Aluminum alloys are widely known as non-ferrous metal with light weight and high strength. Consequently, these materials take center stage in the aircraft and automobile industry. The Al7075 aluminum alloy is based on the Al-Zn-Mg-Cu and one of the strongest wrought aluminum alloys. Aluminum nitride has ten times higher thermal conductivity($319W/m{\cdot}K$) than Al2O3 and also has outstanding electric insulation($1{\times}1014{\Omega}{\cdot}cm$). Furthermore, it has high mechanical property (430 MPa) even though its co-efficient of thermal expansion is less than alumina For these reasons, it has great possibilities to be used for not only the field which needs high strength lightweight but also electronic material field because of its suitability to be applied to the insulator film of PCB or wafer of ceramic with high heat conduction. This paper investigates the mechanical properties and corrosion behavior of aluminum alloy Al7075 deposited with aluminum nitride thin films To improve the surface properties of Al7075 with respect to hardness, and resistance to corrosion, aluminum nitride thin films have been deposited by pulsed DC reactive magnetron sputtering. The pulsed DC power provides arc-free deposition of insulating films.

  • Grain growth behaviors of hot-rolled AZ31 (Mg-3%Al-1%Zn) and AZ31-0.3%CaO alloys at elevated temperatures have been investigated in order to clarify the effect of CaO addition on grain stability of Mg-Al-based wrought alloy. The grain size of CaO-free alloy increased steeply from 673 K with an increase in annealing temperature from 573 to 773 K, whereas the grains of CaO-containing alloy were relatively stable up to 723 K. The activation energies for grain growth ($E_g$) were 12.2 and 18.3 kJ/mole between 573 and 673 K and 119.2 and 126.9 kJ/mole between 673 and 773 K in the AZ31 and AZ31-0.3%CaO alloys, respectively. This result indicates that grains in the CaO-added alloy possess higher thermal stability than CaO-free alloy. SEM observations on the annealed alloy samples revealed that higher grain stability resulting from CaO addition would be associated with the suppression of grain growth by Ca-related precipitate particles distributed in the microstructure.

  • Magnesium alloy is a metal with high specific strength and light weight, and is attracting attention as a next generation metal for environmentally friendly automobiles and transportation equipment. However, magnesium alloys have a problem of degrading formability due to the basal texture developed during processing, and their application is limited. Although active researches on the control of textures have been conducted in order to minimize this problem, there is a lack of research on the formation of microstructures and textures according to elemental differences. In this study, AZ61 and AZ80 magnesium alloys were selected to investigate the effects of aluminum addition on the microstructure development of magnesium alloys. This research has proven that the increase of the rolling rate results in the decrease of the average grain size of the two alloys, the increase of the hardness, and the increase of the fraction of twins. As shown on this research below, the basal texture developed strongly as the rolling ratio increased. On the other hand, this research also has proven that the two alloys exhibited different texture strength and distribution tendencies, which could be due to the effects of aluminum addition on work hardening, grain size, and twin behavior.

  • This study investigated the corrosion rate of aluminum in alkaline solution. It was performed to observe the effects of alloy element, alkalinity (KOH concentration), solution temperature, and inhibitor and its concentration in the solution. Among species of aluminum, AA-1050 showed the lowest corrosion rate due to its high purity $(>199\%)$, whereas alloys containing Mg anuor Mn were highly corroded, relatively. The corrosion rate could be reduced over than $50\%$ by saturating the solution with ZnO, while ZnAc did not work as an inhibitor. The inhibition effect of ZnO increased with increasing the alkalinity and solution temperature. It was found that the corrosion rate linearly increased with the concentration of KOH in first order and exponentially decreased with the inverse of the solution temperature. An analysis of the corroded material covered the surface of aluminum was made by SEM and EDS. According to the analytical results by using XRD, it was confirmed that $Al(OH)_3$ was produced from the corrosion of aluminum in KOH solution.

  • The author's theory for plastic deformation was applied to superplastic alloys (Zn-Al eutectoid, Al-Cu, Pb-Sn, Sn-Bi, Mg-Al eutectics). The plastic deformation of the superplastic alloys could be described by two Maxwell models connected in parallel which represent two grain boundary flow units. The flow units are characterized by the two parameters $X_{gj}/{\alpha}_{gj}\;and\;{\beta}_{gj}$ (j=l or 2, g signifies the grain boundary) the values of which were obtained by applying our flow equation [Eq. (5)] to experiment. We confirmed that our flow equation describes the superplasticity very well. The curve of strain rate sensitivity m (=${\partial}\;In\;f/{\partial}\;In\;\dot{s})\;vs.\;-In\dot{s}$, where f and s are stress and strain rate, respectively, showed two peaks corresponding to flow unit gl and g2, the separation of the two peaks is determined by the difference between ${\beta}_{g1}\;and\;{\beta}_{g2}$. The condition of superplasticity is also determined by ${\beta}_{gj}$, which satisfies $\dot{s}_{mj}{\leqslant}1.53}{\beta}_{gj}$ [Eq.(13)], where $\dot{s}_{mj}$ is the s of the jth unit at the peak. The grain size dependence of ${\beta}_{gj}$ is described by $ln({\beta}_{gj})^{-1}$=alnx+b [Eq. (16)], where x is the grain size, and a and b are constants. The activation enthalpy for each flow unit, ${\Delta}H_{gj}^{\neq}$ was also determined from the temperature dependence of ${\beta}_{gj}$ which is proportional to the relaxation time of the j th unit. Since the superplasticity is determined by Eq. (13), and since ${\beta}_{gj}$ and ${\Delta}H_{gj}^{\neq}$ are related, we obtained the conclusion that superplasticity occurs in the system having small ${\Delta}H_{gj}^{\neq}$ values. The Aej values were equal to the activation enthalpies of grain boundary self-diffusion of the component atoms of the alloys, this accords with our proposed flow mechanism. The ${\Delta}H_{gj}^{\neq}$ value increases with grain size as expected from Eq. (16).

  • In this study, the effects of two different casting methods (gravity casting and, diecasting) and various solid-solution conditions on the mechanical properties of ASC (Al-10.5wt%Si-1.75wt%Cu) and ALDC12 (Al-10.3wt%Si-1.72wt%Cu-0.76wt%Fe-0.28wt% Mn-0.32wt%Mg-0.9wt%Zn) alloys were investigated. A thermodynamic solidification analysis program (PANDAT) was used to predict the liquidus, solidus, and phases of the used alloys. In the results of an XRD analysis, ${\beta}$-AlFeSi peaks were observed only in the ALDC12 alloy regardless of the casting method or SST (solid-solution treatment) conditions. However, according to the results of a FE-SEM observation, both ${\theta}(Al_2Cu)$ and ${\beta}$-AlFeSi were found to exist besides ${\alpha}$-Al and eutectic Si in the gravity-casted ASC alloy at $500^{\circ}C$ after a SST of 120min. The ${\alpha}$-AlFeSi and ${\beta}$-AlFeSi phases including the eutectic phases were also found to exist in the ALDC12 alloy. The results of a microstructural observation and analyses by XRD, FE-SEM and EDS were in good agreement with the PANDAT results. The gravity-casted ALDC12 and ASC specimens showed the highest Y.S. and UTS values after aging for three hours at $180^{\circ}C$ after a SST at $500^{\circ}C$ for 30min. At longer solid-solution treatment times at $500^{\circ}C$ in the gravity-casted ALDC12 and ASC specimens, the elongations of the ASC alloys increased, whereas they decreased slightly in the ALDC12 alloys.
