In this study, the relationship between strength and damping capacity of annealed magnesium alloys after hot rolling was investigated. The microstructure of hot rolled magnesium consisted of dendrite structure and $Mg_{17}Al_{12}$ compounds precipitated along the grain boundary. The dendrite structure was dissipated, $Mg_{17}Al_{12}$ compounds was decomposed by annealing, and then its dissolved in ${\alpha}$-Mg. With an increasing the annealing temperature and time, strength was slowly decreased and damping capacity was slowly increased by the growth of grain size and decreasing of defects induced by hot rolling. In annealing treatmented magnesium alloys after hot rolling, damping capacity was decreased rapidly with an increase of strength. There was on proportional relationship between tensile strength, and damping capacity.

Corrosion characteristic of the duplex Al-Mg-Si alloys with low, commercial and high solute contents were studied using an anodic polarization test in 1M NaCl solution at room temperature. Polarization range condition of the experiment were form .0.3V to .1.3V with a 0.2 mV scanning speed. The exchange current density means corrosion rate of the low solute alloy was low as about $16.29{\mu}A/cm^2$, and that of the high solute alloy was high as $84.92{\mu}A/cm^2$. The difference was mainly attributed to the inter-granular precipitates $Mg_2Si$ and Si which could make a galvanic corrosion on the aluminum base. The amount of precipitates was greater in high solute alloy at mainly in grain boundary. While, the extruded alloys had better corrosion resistance than the cast alloy because the silicon precipitates become coarse during the extrusion process.
The effects of alloying elements on the superplastic properties of Al-Li based alloys had been investigated. The intermediate thermo-mechanical treated (ITMT) Al-2.0wt%Li, Al-2.0wt%Li-1.0wt%Mg, Al-2.0wt%Li-0.12wt%Zr and Al-2.0wt%Li-1.2wt%Cu-1.0wt%Mg-0.12wt%Zr alloys were tested in tension at various temperature (400, 450, 500 and $550^{\circ}C$) and strain rate($6.7{\times}10^{-3}$, $1.0{\times}10^{-2}$, $1.6{\times}10^{-2}$ and $5.0{\times}10^{-2}/sec$). The results were as follows : The superplasticity in binary, ternary and pentanary alloys appeared at 500 to $550^{\circ}C$, and good strain rate for superplasticity. $1.6{\times}10^{-2}/sec{\sim}1.0{\times}10^{-2}/sec$ for a binary alloy and $1.0{\times}10^{-2}/sec{\sim}6.7{\times}10^{-3}/sec$ for ternary and pentanary alloys. A Zr-added ternary alloy had best value of elongation (730%) in four alloys at $550^{\circ}C$ of tension temperature and $1.0{\times}10^{-2}/sec$ of strain rate. The strain rate was greatly dependent on tension temperature and true strain rate was more than 1.0 at all test temperature and strain rate. In binary and Mg-added teranry alloys. the necks were slightly formed and their fracture surface had lips shape, but Zr-added ternary and pentanary alloy fractured along the grain boundary without necking. Their dislocations moved to grain boundary during superplasticity deformation and arranged perpendicular to grain boundary. Super plastic deformation was made by grain boundary slip of dislocation slip creep and model of core and mantle.

During the past five years a very successful effort has been made to improve existing and develop new aluminium alloys. The progress achieved has been possible because of the development of new production methods, such as powder metallurgy and spray/deposition. These methods make use of rapid solidification process which alloys compositions other than those achieved by conventional ingot metallurgy. The ingot metallurgy of the 2000 and 7000 series used thus far, as well as the age hardening Al-Li alloys, show several disadvantages caused by the production process. Such problems are primarily coarse intermetallic constituent phases, coarse grains and macrosegregation, resulting in low fracture toughness. The present contribution reports results of an experimental investigation performed on a modern high strength spay deposited aluminium alloy of the Al-Zn-Mg-Cu (7075 and the modified 7150X) type. Results are given in terms of its microstructural characterization by using X-ray diffractomertry and transmission electron microscopic. The mechanical propierties of those alloys in the as-extruded and extruded+aged condition were evaluated by using microhardness Vickers, tensile test and fracture toughness measurements.
Effect of Fe and Mn contents on the castability of Al-4wt%Mg-0.9wt%Si system alloy has been studied. According to the analysis of cooling curve for Al-4wt%Mg-0.9wt%Si-0.3wt%Fe-0.3/0.5wt%Mn alloy, ${\alpha}-Al_{15}(Fe,Mn)_3Si_2$ and ${\beta}-Al_5FeSi$ phases crystallized above eutectic temperature of $Mg_2Si$. Therefore, these phases affected both the fluidity and shrinkage behaviors of the alloy during solidification. As Fe and Mn contents of Al-4wt%Mg-0.9wt%Si system alloy increased from 0.1 wt% to 0.4 wt% and from 0.3 wt% to 0.5 wt% respectively, the fluidity of the alloy decreased by 26% and 33%. When Fe content of the alloy increased from 0.1 wt% to 0.4 wt%, 23% decrease of macro shrinkage and 19% increase of micro shrinkage appeared. Similarly, Mn content of the alloy increased from 0.3 wt% to 0.5 wt%, 11% decrease of macro shrinkage and 14% increase of micro shrinkage appeared. Judging from the castability of the alloy, Al-4wt%Mg-0.9wt%Si alloy with low content of Fe and Mn, 0.1 wt% Fe and 0.3 wt% Mn, is recommendable.

Tnermomechanical treatment consisting of homogenizing, hot and warm rolling were introduced to Al-MgCu-Mn alloys for obtaining superplasticity. The factors affecting the superplasticity of the alloys were investigated by optical and transmission electron microscopy. Large particles which had not been decomposed during homogenizing treatments remained stable in the hot and warm rolling processes. These particles were a source of cavitation and poor elongation in superplastic deformation. On the other hand, fine precipitates were produced during thermomechanical processing, and resulted in improvement of superplasticity by stabilizing microstructure. Two-step homogenizing and air cooling process was more effective than onestep homogenizing and furance cooling process in removing microsegregations and producing fine particles.
Microstructure of aluminum alloys produced by the different mixing ratio of secondary ingot made by aluminum UBC (used beverage can) and virgin aluminum was investigated. The phase transitions of casted ingot by heat treatment were also studied. The alloys were melted at the electric resistance furnace, then casted using ceramic filter. Homogenization heat treatment was conducted at $615^{\circ}C$ for 10hrs to control cast microstructure. There were several kinds of phases, in as-cast condition, such as $\alpha$($Al_{12}$$((Fe,Mn)_3$Si), $\beta$($Al_{6}$ (Fe,Mn)), and fine $Mg_2$Si phases. Especially, the amount of $\beta$-phase which was harmful in forming process was large. The $\beta$-Phase formed was transformed to u-phase by heat treatment. The fine $Mg_2$Si in the aluminum matix was also transformed to $\alpha$-phase by this heat treatment. Impurities filtered during casting process were identified as intermetallic compounds of Fe, Cu, Si.

The purpose of this paper was to investigate the effects of solution treatment time and Sr-modification on the microstructure and property of the Al-Si piston alloy. It was found that as-cast microstructures of unmodified and Sr-modified Al-Si alloys consisted of a coarse acicular plate of eutectic Si, $Cu_3NiAl_6$ and $Mg_2Si$ phases in the ${\alpha}$-Al matrix but different in size and morphology. Both size and inter-particle spacing of Si particles were significantly changed by increasing of the solution treatment time. After a short solution treatment, the coarse acicular plate of the eutectic Si appears to be fragmented. Fully modified microstructure of Sr-modified alloy can reduce the solution treatment time to shorter compared to unmodified alloy. The maximum of a peak hardness value is found in the very short solution treatment of both Al-Si piston alloys. Compared to 10 h solution treatment, the solution treatment of 2-4 h is sufficient to achieve appropriate microstructures and hardness. The short solution treatment is very useful to increase the productivity and to reduce the manufacturing cost of the Al-Si piston alloys.

Nanostructured high strength metastable Al-, Mg- and Ti-based alloys containing different amorphous, quasicrystalline and nanocrystalline phases are synthesized by non-equilibrium processing techniques. Such alloys can be prepared by quenching from the melt or by powder metallurgy techniques. This paper focuses on one hand on mechanically alloyed and ball milled powders containing different volume fractions of amorphous or nano-(quasi)crystalline phases, consolidated bulk specimens and, on the other hand. on cast specimens containing different constituent phases with different length-scale. As one example. $Mg_{55}Y_{15}Cu_{30}$- based metallic glass matrix composites are produced by mechanical alloying of elemental powder mixtures containing up to 30 vol.% $Y_2O_3$ particles. The comparison with the particle-free metallic glass reveals that the nanosized second phase oxide particles do not significantly affect the glass-forming ability upon mechanical alloying despite some limited particle dissolution. A supercooled liquid region with an extension of about 50 K can be maintained in the presence of the oxides. The distinct viscosity decrease in the supercooled liquid regime allows to consolidate the powders into bulk samples by uniaxial hot pressing. The $Y_2O_3$ additions increase the mechanical strength of the composites compared to the $Mg_{55}Y_{15}Cu_{30}$ metallic glass. The second example deals with Al-Mn-Ce and Al-Cu-Fe composites with quasicrystalline particles as reinforcements, which are prepared by quenching from the melt and by powder metallurgy. $Al_{98-x}Mn_xCe_2$ (x =5,6,7) melt-spun ribbons containing a major quasicrystalline phase coexisting with an Al-matrix on a nanometer scale are pulverized by ball milling. The powders are consolidated by hot extrusion. Grain growth during consolidation causes the formation of a micrometer-scale microstructure. Mechanical alloying of $Al_{63}Cu_{25}Fe_{12}$ leads to single-phase quasicrystalline powders. which are blended with different volume fractions of pure Al-powder and hot extruded forming $Al_{100-x}$$(Al_{0.63}Cu_{0.25}Fe_{0.12})_x$ (x = 40,50,60,80) micrometer-scale composites. Compression test data reveal a high yield strength of ${\sigma}_y{\geq}$700 MPa and a ductility of ${\varepsilon}_{pl}{\geq}$5% for than the Al-Mn-Ce bulk samples. The strength level of the Al-Cu-Fe alloys is ${\sigma}_y{\leq}$550 MPa significantly lower. By the addition of different amounts of aluminum, the mechanical properties can be tuned to a wide range. Finally, a bulk metallic glass-forming Ti-Cu-Ni-Sn alloy with in situ formed composite microstructure prepared by both centrifugal and injection casting presents more than 6% plastic strain under compressive stress at room temperature. The in situ formed composite contains dendritic hcp Ti solid solution precipitates and a few $Ti_3Sn,\;{\beta}$-(Cu, Sn) grains dispersed in a glassy matrix. The composite micro- structure can avoid the development of the highly localized shear bands typical for the room temperature defor-mation of monolithic glasses. Instead, widely developed shear bands with evident protuberance are observed. resulting in significant yielding and homogeneous plastic deformation over the entire sample.

To evaluate the applicability of dissimilar joining between Mg and Al alloys in automobile manufacturing process, solid state joining processes such as magnetic pulse welding(MPW), friction stir welding(FSW) and friction spot joining(FSJ) were attempted successfully. MPW process has been concentrated mainly on round section tube to tube and tube to bar welds. AZ31 Mg alloy has been successfully welded to pure Al A1070 as well as to Al alloy A3003. While, for friction stir welding of dissimilar sheet joints, AZ31B/A6061 with the thickness of 2mm were used and a square butt joint with a good quality was obtained at the conditions of 0.8mm/sec of travel speed and tool rotation speed of 850rpm. The maximum tensile strength of 179 MPa, which was about 80 % of the Mg base metal tensile strength, has been obtained. Finally, friction spot joining was attempted to make a dissimilar lap joint between AZ31(0.8mm) and A6061(1mm), while the joint exhibited the same level of tensile shear strength as that of similar Mg joint.
