The effect of hydrochlorothiazide on the pharmacokinetics of carteolol in rabbits was studied. Animals were divided into two groups (group I and group II). Group I received carteolol (12mg/kg) and group II received carteolol (12mg/kg) with hydrochlorothiazide (20mg/kg) orally. The carteolol concentration in serum was measured by spectrofluorometric method and its pharmacokinetic parameter values were calculated. The serum concentration of carteolol in group II was significantly increased when compared with those in group I at 10min (p<0.01), and at 30min (p<0.05) after p. o. administration. In addition, the absorption rate constant of carteolol in group II was slightly increased and Tmax of carteolol in group II was significantly shortened (p<0.05) and Cmax of carteolol in group II was significantly increased (p<0.02) when compared with those in group I. But elimination rate constant and biological half-life of carteolol were similar in both groups.
Solvent extraction of alkali metal and alkaline earth metal cations by mono-crown ether(benzo-15-crown-5) and bis-(crown ether)s(ethylenediamine bis(4'-formyl benzo-15-crown-5)) containing benzo-15-crown-5 moieties were investigated with water-chloroform system at $25^{\circ}C$. The order of the extraction equilibrium constants($K_e$) and the complexation constants($K_c$) for the alkali metal and alkaline earth metal cations with mono-crown ether and bis-(crown ether)s were Ca(II)>Na(I)>Sr(II)>K(I)>Mg(II)>Rb(I) and Sr(II)>Ca(II)>K(I)>Rb(I)>Mg(II)>Na(I) respectively. These results were explained in terms of the size effect of metal cation and electron density effect. Also, the bis-(crown ether)s was found to extract metal cations more effectively than the corresponding mono-crown ether.
Purpose : Several studies have suggested that hyperlipidemia might be a causative factor contributing to the progression of initial glomerular injury through the development of glomerulosclerosis. We examined the potential beneficial effect of atorvastatin - which blocks the rate limiting step of cholesterol synthesis by inhibiting HMG-CoA reductase - in PAN-induced nephrosis. Materials and Methods : Glomerulosclerosis was induced in Sprague-Dawley male rats by repeated administration of PAN. Sprague-Dawley male rats were divided into 3 groups : group I(control), group II(PAN 20 mg/kg, subcutaneous injection), group III(PAN 20 mg/kg subcutaneous injection and atorvastatin 50 mg/kg/day per oral). On the 11th week, upon sacrifice of the experimental animals, blood sampling, 24-hr urine collection and nephrectomy were performed. Results : Group III had significantly lower BUN and higher serum albumin($30.9{\pm}17.2\;vs.\;17.3{\pm}2.5\;mg/dL;\;2.3{\pm}0.1\;vs.\;2.5{\pm}0.2\;g/dL$, P<0.05) compared with group II. In the lipid profiles, group III was associated with a reduction in total cholesterol and LDL($291{\pm}173\;vs.\;167{\pm}72\;mg/dL:\;57{\pm}53\;vs.\;27{\pm}12\;mg/dL$, P>0.05) compared with group II. Atorvastatin administration lowered the glomerular sclerosing index significantly(26.2% vs. 13.3%, P<0.05). Conclusion : Puromycin-induced glomerulosclerosis could be ameliorated by the reduction of hyperlipidemia with atorvastatin. This suggests that hyperlipidemia contributes to the pathogenesis of glomerulosclerosis.
The extracts of Yukgunja-tang which has been used in some of gastroin testinal disorders were examined for secretion of gastric juice and movement of isolated stomach of rabbit. Experiments were performed with the dried extract of Yukgunja-tang (sample I) and the dried extract compound made of each drug of Yukgunja-tang (sample II). The secretion of gastric juice at the doses of 25.0 and 50.0mg/kg p.o. of sample I showed the decreases of 34.3 and 43.3%, respectively, as compared with control group, whereas the secretion at a dose of 76.8g/kg of sample II showed 43.1%. In gastric acid secretion, sample I showed 50.0% decrease at a dose of 50.0mg/kg and sample II showed 46.2% decrease at a dose of 76.8mg/kg. In pepsin output sample I showed 17.8 and 23.4% decreases at a dose of 25.0 and 50.0mg/kg, respectively, whereas sample II showed 22.5% decrease at a dose of 76.8mg/kg. The isolated stomach of rabbit showed dose-responsive contraction by addition of sample I, however the contraction was not observed by sample II.
The Mg II lines been extracted from the IUE archival spectra of 32 Cygni to investigate the effect of the atmospheric eclipse. The UV light curve has been reduced from the continuum flux at the center wavelength of 2807.5 ${\AA}$ in the IUE spectra. The equivalent width of the Mg II k absoption line has been measured for each spectra. The results of the light variation and flux tracing of the absorption line at the vicinity of the primary eclipse confirmed the atmospheric eclipse. The atmospheric effect lasted until the phase 0.06 in the absorptin line tracing, while it lasted until the phase 0.02 in the UV light curve, respectively.
To study environmental effects on the circumgalactic medium (CGM), we use the samples of redMaPPer galaxy clusters, background quasars and cluster galaxies from the SDSS. With 82,000 quasar spectra, we detect 197 MgII absorbers in and around the clusters. The detection rate per quasar is 2.70 times higher inside the clusters than outside the clusters, indicating that MgII absorbers are relatively abundant in clusters. However, when considering the galaxy number density, the absorber-to-galaxy ratio is rather low inside the clusters. If we assume that MgII absorbers are mainly contributed by the CGM of massive star-forming galaxies, a typical halo size of cluster galaxies is smaller than that of field galaxies by 30 per cent. This finding supports that galaxy haloes can be truncated by interaction with the host cluster.
To improve transformation efficiency, the callus of Lilium lancifolium Thunb. were bombarded by particles coated with pIG 121 Hm which include NPT II and GUS genes, and then cocultivated with Agrobacterium tumefaciens EHA101 which contain pIG121Hm binary vector, carrying neomycin phosphotransferase (NPT II) and $\beta$-Glucuronidase (GUS) genes. Three days after cocultivation with Agrobacterium tumefaciens and particle bombardment, the callus clusters were transferred to MS medium containing 1mg/L 2,4-D, 0.1mg/L BAP, 100mg/L kanamycin and 200mg/L carbenicillin. Four weeks after transfer to the selection medium, GUS expression was detected and PCR analysis revealed the presence of NPT II fragment of the expected size (700 bp) in the transformed callus. The GUS expression from Agrobacterium-mediated transformants after particle bombardment increased to over 3-folds compared with that of callus cocultivated with Agrobacterium tumefaciens without particle bombardment. The callus clusters containing kanamycin resistant gene were transferred to MS medium containing 1mg/L NAA and 1mg/L BAP. Somatic embryos were developed in four weeks and microbulbs expressing GUS were formed.

Korean pine(Pinus densiflora) bark was evaluated for its adsorption capacity of Cu(II) ions from aqueous solution by running a series of batch experiments. Prior to the tests, the milled barks were treated with 1 N NaOH or 1 N HCl to examine the effect of surface modification. For comparison, untreated bark was tested under same condition. Within the tested pH range between 3 and 6, NaOH treatment increased Cu(II) adsorption capacity by $139\sim184%$, while HCl treatment decreased it by $37\sim42%$. Maximum copper ion uptake by bark was observed at pH $5\sim6$, but pH of solution was not a potent influence. A pseudo second-order kinetic model fitted well for the sorption of copper ion onto bark. For NaOH-treated bark, the calculated sorption capacity$(q_e)$ increased from 6.58 to 12.77 mg/g, while the equilibrium rate constant$(k_2)$ decreased from 0.284 to 0.014 g/mg/min as initial Cu(II) concentration doubled from 100 mg/L. A batch isotherm test using NaOH-treated bark showed that equilibrium sorption data were represented by both the Langmuir model and the Freundlich model. It was confirmed that carboxylic acid of bark was involved in the Cu(II) adsorption. For NaOH-treated bark, in particular, carboxylate ion produced by hydrolysis or saponification appeared to be a major functional roup responsible for the enhanced Cu(II) sorption.
This study was conducted to improve commercial quality of a cut spray chrysanthemum 'Ilweol' bred in Korea by foliar application of daminozide, suppressing excessive elongation of peduncle caused by high temperature in summer season production. Applications were made at three floral bud developmental stage (I, II, and III), and concentrations used were 0, 500, 1000, and $2000mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$. Cut flower length and peduncle length showed the greatest repression of elongation through daminozide treatments at stage III and stage II, respectively. Daminozide also gradually reduced values of those in a concentration-dependant manner. Flower diameter increased compared to control as daminozide was sprayed at later stage but decreased in daminozide concentration-dependant manner. Angle of flower cluster on apical part of whole plant showed the best results when sprayed with $2,000mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ at stage III. Among all combinations, $2,000mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ daminozide at stage II recorded the highest angle of flower cluster and showed 31.3% increment as compared to control. The number of fully expanded flowers showed the highest values using $2,000mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ daminozide at stage III than the other treatments and total floral buds also showed the highest values using $2,000mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ daminozide at stage I than the other treatments. In cut spray chrysanthemum cultivar 'Ilweol' bred in Korea, foliar-applying with $2,000mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ at stage III most effectively suppressed excessive peduncle elongation, angle of flower cluster, and increased the number of flowers in summer. However, this combination affected negatively the other commercial qualities, reducing cut flower length and flower diameter. Therefore, we recommended that foliar application stage and daminozide concentration was stage III and $500mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$, respectively, in a practical culture and cut flower quality for 'Ilweol'.
These experiments were conducted to investigate general enzymatic characteristics of two forms(glucoamylase I and glucoamylase II) of the purified glucoamylase produced by Rhizopus oryzae. Molecular weights of glucoamylase I and glucoamylase II estimated by Sephadex G-100gel filtration, were approximately 101,000 and 115,000, respectively, and those estimated by SDS-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis being 120,000 and 127,000, respectively. Isoelectric points of the above enzyme were pH 7.25 and pH 7.75. The optimum temperature was $50^{\circ}C$ and the enzyme was stable below $45^{\circ}C$. Optimum pH of both glucoamylase I and glucoamylase II was about pH 5.0. The stable pH range of them were pH 3.5-8.0 and 4.5-8.0, respectively. Michaelis constants of glucoamylase I and glucoamylase II toward souluble starch were 4.545 mg/ml and 5.560 mg/ml, respectively. $Hg^{++}$, $Pb^{++}$, p-CMB and IAA were inhibitors of glucoamylase I and $Hg^{++}$, $Mn^{++}$, p-CMB and IAA were inhibitors of glucoamylase II.
