  • Ion exchange resins have been synthesized from chloromethylated styrene-1,4-divinylbenzene (DVB) with 1%, 2%, 5% and 15%-crosslinkage and macrocyclic ligand of $OenNdien-H_4$ by copolymerization. The adsorption characteristics of uranium (${UO_2}^{2+}$), potassium ($K^+$) and neodymium ($Nd^{3+}$) metallic ions have been investigated. The synthesis of these resins was confirmed by content of chlorine, element analysis, and IR-spectrum. The effects of pH, time, and crosslinkage on adsorption of metallic ions were also studied. The uranium ion showed the fast adsorption on the resins above pH 3. The optimum equilibrium time for the adsorption of metallic ions was about two hours. The adsorption selectivity determined in methanol solution was in increasing order uranium (${UO_2}^{2+}$) > potassium ($K^+$) > neodymium ($Nd^{3+}$) ion. Moreover, the adsorption was increased with the crosslinkage concentration in order of 1%, 2%, 5% and 15%-crosslinkage resin.

  • Direct preparative method of 2,6-diformyl-p-cresol and 2-hydroxy-3-hydroxy-5-methylbenzaldehyde from 2,6-bis(hydroxymethyl)-4-methylphenol using activated $Mn(IV)O_2$ was described. Hexadentate compartmental Iigands, $H_4L[A]\;and\; H_4L[B]$ were prepared by condensation reactions of 2-hydroxy-3-hydroxy methyl-5-methylbenzaldehyde with ethylenediamine and 1,3-diaminopropane respectively. By the reaction of macrocycle($H_4[20]DOTA$) with Ln(III) nitrate {Ln(III)=Pr, Sm, Cd, Dy }, discrete mononuclear Ln(III) complexes of the type $[Ln(H_2[20]DOTA)(ClO_4)(H_2O)]\;{\cdot}\;3H_2O$ were synthesized in the solid state. $[Ln([20]DOTA)(NO_3)(H_2O)](NO_3)_2\;{\cdot}\;xH_2O$ was placed in methanol for 2 days, and $[Ln([20]DOTA)(NO_3)(CH_3OH)]^{2+}$ was formed. The equilibrium constants(K) for the substitution of coordinated $CH_3OH$ in the Ln-[20]DOTA complexes by various auxiliary ligand, $L_a$(=salicylic acid, p-chlorobenzoic acid, benzoic acid, acetic acid, 4-bromophenol) were determined spectroscopically at 25$^{\circ}C$ and 0.1M $NaClO_4$. The K values calculated were in the order of salicylic acid > p-chlorobenzoic acid > benzoic acid > acetic acid > 4-bromophenol, while pKa of auxiliary ligands was in the opposite trend.

  • The chemical compositions and stability constants, thermodynamic parameters for the neodymium(Ⅲ) complexes of substituted benzo-1,4,7,10,13-pentaoxacyclopentadecane(B15C5) have been determined by spectrophotometry and conductometry in methanol solution at various temperatures. As substituents, CH3, Br, CHO, NO2, and 3,4-(NO2)2 were used. In methanol solution the ratios of neodymium(Ⅲ) to the ligands in the complexes are 1 : 1. The stability constants were increased in order of B15C5-3,4-(NO2)2 < B15C5-NO2 < B15C5-CHO < B15C5-Br < B15C5 < B15C5-CH3. This observation can be explained in terms of the substituent effect. The order of stability constants was dimethylsulfoxide < acetone < acetonitrile in solution and the magnitudes were found to be inversely proportional to the solvents donicities. These results could be understood in terms of solvent basicity, ligand basicity, solvation of the cation, and entropy changes of complex formation.

  • The stability constants$(K_f)$ of the complexes of some transition and post-transition metal ions (Co(Ⅱ), Ni(Ⅱ), Cu(Ⅱ), Zn(Ⅱ), Cd(Ⅱ), Pb(Ⅱ), Hg(Ⅱ)) with $N_2O_3$-donor macrocyclic ligand, 1,15-diaza-3,4 : 12,13-dibenzo-5,8,11-trioxacyclooctadecane ($NtnOdienH_4$), have been determined by potentiometry in aqueous solution at $25^{\circ}C$. Log $K_f$ values of the complexes were : Co(Ⅱ): 3.83, Ni(Ⅱ) : 4.56, Cu(Ⅱ) : 7.74, Zn(Ⅱ) : 4.98, Cd(Ⅱ) : 3.91, Pb(Ⅱ) : 6.65, and Hg(Ⅱ) : 14.87. The order of stabilities of transition metal complexes was the same as the natural order of stability proposed by Williams-Irving. In post-transition metal complexes, the order of stabilities was Cd(Ⅱ) < Pb(Ⅱ) < Hg(Ⅱ), and the covalent character in metal ion-donor atoms bonds appeared a dominant factor in the stability. In methanol solution, each metal ion forms 1 : 1 complex, while Ni(Ⅱ) ion forms both 1 : 1 and 1 : 2 complexes. It was confirmed by $^1H-$ and $^{13}C-$NMR spectral study that the nitrogen atoms in the ligand were major contributors for the complexation of post-transition metal ions with the ligand. It was shown, by elementry analysis, electrical conductivity and magnetic susceptibility measurements, and spectral analysis, that solid Cu(Ⅱ)-and Zn(Ⅱ)-complexes have a distorted octahedral and a tetrahedral structure, respectively.

  • A new macrocyclic ligand 1,15,18-triaza-3,4;12,13-dibenzo-5,8,11-cycloeicosane (NdienOdien$H_4$ = $N_3O_3$) has been synthesized and identified by element analysis, NMR and IR spectrophotometry. Stepwise protonation constants of ligand are determined by potentiometry in 95% methanol solution(I = 0.1 mol $dm^{-3}$, $Me_4$NCl). log $K_1$;log $K_2$;log $K_3$ = 9.1;8.1;3.6.The kinetics of the acid-promoted dissociation reactions of complex cations of nickel(II) and copper(III) with NdienOdien and NdienOen macrocyclic ligands having, respectively, 17 and 20 ring members, have been studied spectrophotometrically in HCl$O_4$ NaCl$O_4$ aqueous solutions. From the temperature effect on kinetic constant ($k_{obs}$), the parameters of activation(${\Delta}H^{\neq}$, ${\Delta}S^{\neq}$) of dissociation reaction for $ML^{2+}$ with $H^+$ ion have been determined. We have proposed the possible mechanism of the reaction from the data obtained.

  • Saururus chinensis is a commonly used folk herb for the treatment of edema and liver diseases in Korea. To study the biological activity of Saururus chinensis in bone metabolism, we evaluated the effect of its extracts on osteoclast differentiation in vitro using primary mouse bone marrow-derived macrophages. Methanol extract (ME) from dried roots of Saururus chinensis was partitioned into methylene chloride (MF), ethyl acetate (EF), n-butanol (BF) and water fractions (WF). Tartrate-resistance acid phosphatase (TRAP) activity assay and western blot analysis were performed to determine the effect on osteoclast differentiation and mitogen-activated protein (MAP) kinases activation. ME, MF and EF dramatically inhibited receptor activator of ${NF-kB}$ ligand (RANKL)-induced formation of multinucleated osteoclasts and activation of MAP kinases. This study firstly demonstrated that ME, MF and EF of Saururus chinensis have the potential to inhibit the osteoclast differentiation, which results from the inhibition of MAP kinases activations in part.

  • A new tetranuclear Mn(III) complex $[Mn^{III}{_4}(sae)_4({\mu}_3-O)({\mu}_{1,1}-N_3)(OH)(H_2O)_2]{\cdot}H_2O$ (1) ($H_2sae$ = 2-salicylideneamino-1-ethanol) has been synthesized by the reaction of $MnCl_2{\cdot}4H_2O$, $H_2sae$ and sodium azide in the mixed solvent of methanol, acetonitrile and water. The X-ray diffraction analysis shows that the four Mn(III) ions in complex 1 have a unique adamantine arrangement, whereas the coordination environment of each Mn(III) ions is different. Magnetic studies indicate that complex 1 manifests antiferromagnetic behaviors. The magnetic susceptibilities of complex 1 have been fitted by two magnetic models based on the suitable analysis of its magnetic structural topology.

  • The one-dimensional coordination polymers, $[Cu^{II}(L)(NO_3)_2]_n$ (1) and {$[Cu^{II}(L)(NO_3)]{\cdot}2H_2O}_{2n} (2), were synthesized from $Cu(NO_3)_2{\cdot}3H_2O$ and 2-[(pyridin-3-ylmethyl)amino]ethanol (L, PMAE) in methanol by controlling the molar ratio of copper(II) salt. Copper(II) ion in 1 has one pyridine group of PMAE whose an aminoethanol group coordinates adjacent copper(II) ion. As the pyridine group is bonded to neighboring copper(II) ion, 1 becomes a one-dimensional chain. Contrary to 1, the structure of 2 shows that the oxygen atom of ethoxide group is bridged between two copper(II) ions, which forms a dinuclear complex. Additionally, the pyridine group of PMAE included one dinuclear unit is coordinated to the other dimeric one each other, which leads to a one-dimensional polymer. Due to the structural differences, 1 exhibits weak antiferromagnetic interaction, while 2 shows strong antiferromagnetic interaction. Due to direct spin exchange via oxygen of PMAE 2 has a much strong spin coupling than 1.

  • The structure of [Cu(tpen)]$(ClO_4)_2$ (tpen = N,N,N',N'-tetrakis(2-pyridylmethyl)-1,2-ethanediamine) has been identified by X-ray crystallography. The copper(II) ion is surrounded by two amine N atoms and three pyridine N atoms of the ligand, making a distorted trigonal-bipyramid. Among the six potential N donor atoms (two amine N and four pyridine N atoms), only one pyridine N atom remains uncoordinated. We examined structural changes on addition of $Cl^-$ to $[Cu(tpen)]^{2+}$(1). The addition of $Cl^-$ in methanol resulted in the formation of a novel dinuclear copper(II) complex $[Cu_2Cl_2(tpen)](ClO_4)_2{\cdot}H_2O$. The structure of the dinuclear complex was verified by X-ray crystallography. Each copper(II) ion in the dinuclear complex showed a distorted square planar geometry with two pyridine N atoms, one amine N atom and one $Cl^-$ ion.

  • Dioxobis(sub.-salicylaldiminato) molybdenum (VI) complexes, $MoO_2\;(X-sal-N-R)_2,\;(X=H,\;5-CH_3,\;R=C_6H_5,\;p-F-C_6H_4,\;m-Cl-C_6H_4,p-I-C_6H_4\;and\;p-C_2H_5-C_6H_4)$, have been prepared by reactions of dioxobis(sub.-salicylaldehydato) molybdenum (VI), $MoO_2(X-sal)_2$ with primary amines, in which $MoO_2(X-sal)_2$ complexes were obtained by acidification of a mixture solution of ammonium paramolybdate in water and appropriate salicylaldehyde in methanol. All these complexes show two strong Mo=O stretching imodes in the 900-940$cm^{-1}$ and p.m.r. spectra exhibited only one signal for the azomethine group. These results confirmed that the complexes are six-coordinated octahedron with a $cis-MoO_2$ group and the geometrical configurations of the complexes possess a C2 axis of symmetry. From the mass analyses of the complexes, it found that the composition ratios of $MoO_2$ : ligand are 1 : 2. The charge transfer transition corresponding to N-Mo, and O-Mo occured at 29,000$cm^{-1}$ and 32,000$cm^{-1}$ respectively. Where, the complexes were found to be non-ionic materials by conductivity measurements in dimethylformamide.
