To check the feasibility of SMART(Steam Methane Advanced Reforming Technology) system, an experimental investigation was performed. A fluidized bed reactor of diameter 0.052m was operated cyclically up to 10th cycle, alternating between reforming and regeneration conditions. FCR-4 catalyst was used as the reforming catalyst and calcined limestone(domestic, from Danyang) was used as the $CO_2$ absorbent. Hydrogen concentration of 98.2% on a dry basis was reached at $650^{\circ}C$ for the first cycle. This value is much higher than $H_2$ concentration of 73.6% in the reformer of conventional SMR (steam methane reforming) condition. The hydrogen concentration decreased because the $CO_2$ capture capacity decreased as the number of cycles increased. However, the average hydrogen concentration at 10th cycle was 82.5% and this value is also higher than that of SMR. Based on these results, we could conclude that the SMART system can replace SMR system to generate pure hydrogen without HTS (high tempeature shift), LTS (low temperature shift) and $CO_2$ separation process.
In order to develop the carbonation process as a core technology of zero emission coal power plant, study on characterization of methane steam reforming (MSR) which is main reaction of this process was carried out. The effects of gas hourly space velocity (GHSV), steam/carbon (S/C) ratio and pressure in the MSR using reforming catalyst were investigated. The equilibrium composition of the gases produced in the MSR were obtained below GHSV 7,000 hr$\^$-1/. The operating conditions of carbonation process using hybrid reaction (MSR+CO$_2$ adsorption using CaO) were 700∼800$^{\circ}C$ and S/C ratio of 2.5∼3. The equilibrium mixture of gases composed of 75∼78% H$_2$ and 8∼9% CO$_2$ at atmospheric pressure and 60∼78% H$_2$ and 9∼l1% CO$_2$ at 1∼30 atm respectively under above operating conditions.

The intrinsic kinetic parameters of steam-methane reforming reactions over commercial nickel-based catalyst were determined. The reaction rate equations were derived from the reaction mechanism-based Langmuir-Hinshelwood chemisorption theory. As the experimental variables for the kinetic study, the reaction temperature ranged from 630 to $750^{\circ}C$ and the steam-to-carbon ratio also varied from 2.7 to 3.5. Based on the experimental data, the efficient optimization algorithm was used to determine the intrinsic kinetic parameters due to the high-dimensional objective function. It is confirmed that the parameter estimation results showed good agreement with the experimental values. Thus, this proposed mathematical reaction model can be used as the basic information to design a catalytic reactor and to optimize operating conditions.
Popular techniques for producing synthesis gas by converting methane include steam reforming and catalyst reforming. However, these are high temperature and high pressure processes limited by equipment, cost and difficulty of operation. Low temperature plasma is projected to be a technique that can be used to produce high concentration hydrogen from methane. It is suitable for miniaturization and for application in other technologies. In this research, the effect of changing each of the following variables was studied using an AC Glidarc system that was conceived by the research team: the gas components ratio, the gas flow rate, the catalyst reactor temperature and voltage. Glidarc plasma reformer was consisted of 3 electrodes and an AC power source. And air was added for the partial oxidation reaction of methane. The result showed that as the gas flow rate, the catalyst reactor temperature and the electric power increased, the methane conversion rate and the hydrogen concentration also increased. With $O_2/C$ ratio of 0.45, input flow rate of 4.9 l/min and power supply of 1 kW as the reference condition, the methane conversion rate, the high hydrogen selectivity and the reformer energy density were 69.2%, 36.2% and 35.2% respectively.
The chemical heat storage as the one way of utilization for high temperature solar energy was considered. The stram reforming reaction of methane was chosen for endothermic reaction. The reactor was made of stainless steel and the dimension was 6.25 mm I.D. and 30 cm long coiled tube because of the geometry requirement of solar receiver. The methane conversion was increased linearly with reaction temperature and nickel content of catalyst. The methane conversion was 60% at $600^{\circ}C$ and 90% at $900^{\circ}C$. The feasibility of steam reforming of methane as the conversion of solar energy to chemical heat storage was confirmed.
In this study, synthesized Ni/CexZr1-xO2 catalysts were coated on the surface of honeycomb metalic monoliths to investigate catalytic activity in steam reforming of methane reactions. Supports with varying Ce/Zr ratios were synthesized to observe their behavior in the reforming reaction, and catalysts with Ni contents ranging from 5 wt% to 20 wt% were prepared to analyze the effect of Ni loading contents on catalytic activity. The catalysts were characterized by XRD, BET, TPR, and SEM. The TPR analysis indicated the formation of Ni-Ce-Zr oxide with a strong interaction between the active metal Ni and CeO2-ZrO2 support. The 15 wt% Ni/Ce0.80Zr0.20O2 catalyst exhibited the highest activity and stability in the steam reforming of methane reaction. Catalysts with enhanced activity and stability were synthesized by manufacturing composite materials using excellent oxygen storage and donor properties of CeO2 and the thermal properties of ZrO2.
Numerical simulation of the natural gas steam reforming process for on-site hydrogen production in a $H_2$ fueling station was conducted on the basis of process material and heat balances. The effects of reforming parameters on the process efficiency of hydrogen production were investigated, and set-point values of each of the parameters to minimize the sizes of unit process equipments and to secure a stable operability of the reforming process were suggested. S/C ratio of the reforming reactants was found to be a crucial parameter in the reforming process mostly governing both the hydrogen production efficiency and the stable operability of the process. The operation of the process was regarded to be stable if the feed water(WR) as a reforming reactant could evaporate completely to dry steam through HRSG. The optimum S/C ratio was 3.0 where the process efficiency of hydrogen production was maximized and the stable operability of the process was secured. The optimum feed rates of natural gas(NGR) and WR as reforming reactants and natural gas(NGB) as a burner fuel were also determined for the hydrogen production rate of $27\;Nm^3/h$.
Nickel fiber mat was investigated as a potential structured catalyst for steam reforming of biogas in the temperature range of $600-700^{\circ}C$. The activity of as-received catalyst was very low owing to the smooth surface of fibers. Pretreatment of the catalyst by oxidation followed by reduction under methane partial oxidation condition significantly improved the catalytic activity, although degradation of the activity was found during the reaction due to oxidation and sintering. This deactivation was retarded by supplying additional hydrogen in the inlet gases or by coating $CeO_2$ over the catalyst surfaces.

The purpose of the research is to develop the high performance solar chemical reactor for producing hydrogen using steam reforming reaction of methane. A specific shape chemical reactor is suggested : spiral type reactor. The reactor is installed on the dish-type solar thermal system of Inha University. The temperatures, $CH_4$ conversion rates, and Hz proportion are measured. At specific condition, $CH_4$ conversion rates of the spiral type reactor are about 91%, and Hz proportion are about 66%. The spiral type reactor gives reasonably good performance without any problems caused by highly concentrated solar radiation.
