KIER has been developing a Ru-based preferential oxidation catalysts and a novel fuel processing system to provide hydrogen rich gas to residential PEMFCs system. The catalytic activity of Ru-based catalysts was investigated at different Ru loading amount and different support structure. The obtained result indicated that 2 wt% loaded Ru-based catalyst supported on ${\alpha}-Al_2O_3$ showed high activity in low temperature range and suppressed the methanation reaction. The developed prototype fuel processor showed thermal efficiency of 78% as a HHV basis with methane conversion of 92%. CO concentration below 10 ppm in the produced gas is achieved with separate preferential oxidation unit under the condition of $[O_2]/[CO]=2.0$. The partial load operation have been carried out to test the performance of fuel processor from 40% to 80% load, showing stable methane conversion and CO concentration below 10 ppm. The durability test for the daily start-stop and 8 h operation procedure is under investigation and shows no deterioration of its performance after 50 start-stop cycles. In addition to the system design and development.

Synthesis gas is commercially produced by a steam reforming process. However, the process is highly endothermic and energy-consuming. Thus, this study was conducted to produce synthesis gas by the partial oxidation of methane to decrease the energy cost. Supported Ni catalysts were prepared by the impregnation method. To examine the activity of the catalysts, a differential fixed bed reactor was used, and the reaction was carried out at $750{\sim}850^{\circ}C$ and 1 atm. The fresh and used catalysts were characterized by XRD, XPS, TGA and AAS. The highest catalytic activity was obtained with the 13wt% Ni/MgO catalyst, with which methane conversion was 81%, and $H_2$ and CO selectivities were 94% and 93%, respectively. 13wt% Ni/MgO catalyst showed the best $MgNiO_2$ solid solution state, which can explain the highest catalytic activity of the 13wt% Ni/MgO catalyst.

The effects of reaction temperature and flow rate of reactants on the methane conversion, product selectivity, product ratio, and carbon deposition were investigated with 13wt% Ni/MgO catalyst. Reaction temperatures were changed from 600 to $850^{\circ}C$, and reactants flow rates were changed from 100 to 200 mL/mim. There were no significant changes in the methane conversion observed in the range of temperatures used. It is possibly stemmed from the nearly total exhaustion of oxygen introduced. The selectiveties of hydrogen and carbon monoxide did not largely depend on the reaction temperature. The selectivities of hydrogen and carbon monoxide were 96 and 90%, respectively. Carbon deposition observed was the smallest at $750^{\circ}C$ and the largest at $850^{\circ}C$. It is found that the proper reaction temperature is $750^{\circ}C$. The best reactant flow rate was 150 ml/min.
Climate change problems occur during the use of fossil fuel and the process of biogas production. Research continues to convert carbon dioxide and methane, the major causes of climate change, into high-quality energy sources. in order to present the performance potential for the novel plasma-recuperative burner reformer, the reforming characteristics for each variable were indentified. The optimal operating condition of was an O2/C ratio of 1.0 and a total gas supply of 20 L/min. At this time, CH4 conversion was 64%, H2 selectivity was 39%, and H2/CO ratio was 1.13, which were the results applicable to the solid oxide fuel cell fuel stack for RPG, or Residential Power Generator. Recirculation of reformed gas increases the amount of H2 and CO, which are combustible gases, especially the amount of H2. As a result, the H2 selectivity is improved, and high-quality gas can be produced.
Pd catalyst have been used in hydrogenation, oxidation, and low temperature combustion reaction. Recently, it is candidated as a possible reagents in the partial oxidation of methanol reformers of the fuel cell. Pd catalysts, even though it is very precious and expensive, catalytic functioning is good, but it still need to be improved in the matter of durability and low catalytic activity after calcination. In this study, we synthesize the improved Pd catalyst and study their chemical functioning.

Low temperature plasma applied with partial oxidation is a technique to produce synthesis gas from methane. Low temperature plasma reformer has superior miniaturization and start-up characteristics to reformers using steam reforming or CO$_2$ reforming. In this research, a low temperature plasma reformer using GlidArc discharge was proposed. Reforming characteristics for each of the following variables were studied: gas components ratio (O$_2$/CH$_4$), the amount of steam, comparison of reaction on nickle and iron catalysts and the amount of CO$_2$. The optimum conditions for hydrogen production from methane was found. The maximum Hydrogen concentration of 41.1% was obtained under the following in this condition: O$_2$/C ratio of 0.64, total gas flow of 14.2 L/min, catalyst reactor temperature of 672$^{\circ}C$, the amount of steam was 0.8, reformer energy density of 1.1 kJ/L with Ni catalyst in the catalyst reactor. At this point, the methane conversion rate, hydrogen selectivity and reformer thermal efficiency were 66%, 93% and 35.2%, respectively.
As the single chamber SOFC(SC-SOFC) showed higher prospect on reducing the operation temperature as well as offering higher design flexibility of SOFCs, lots of concerns have been given to investigate the catalytic activity of perovskite-type oxide in mixed fuel and oxidant conditions. Hence we thoroughly investigated the catalytic property of various perovskite-type oxides such as $La_{0.8}Sr_{0.2}MnO_3(LSM),\;La_{0.6}Sr_{0.4}CoO_3(LSC),\;La_{0.6}Sr_{0.4}Co_{0.2}Fe_{0.8}O_3(LSCF),\;Sm_{0.5}Sr_{0.5}CoO_3(SSC),\;and\;Ba_{0.5}Sr_{0.5}Co_{0.8}Fe_{0.2}(BSCF)$ under the partial oxidation condition of methane which used to be given for SC-SOFC operation. In this study, powder form of each perovskite oxides whose surface areas were controlled to be equal, were investigated as functions of methane to oxygen ratios and reactor temperature. XRD, BET and SEM were employed to characterize the crystalline phase, surface area and microstructure of prepared powders before and after the catalytic oxidation. According to the gas phase analysis with flow-through type reactor and gas chromatography system, LSC, SSC, and LSCF showed higher catalytic activity at fairly lower temperature around $400^{\circ}C{\sim}450^{\circ}C$ whereas LSM and BSCF could be activated at much higher temperature above $600^{\circ}C$.
Hydrogen energy will be considered one of the most important energy carries for the future not only as raw material of petroleum chemical industry but also as the fuel of the fuel cell. The hydrogen production based upon the water electrolysis system combined renewable energy or atomic power energy is being watched as long-term hydrogen sources. Hydrogen from fossil fuel, especially natural gas steam reforming, is the economical mass production method at this time. But the cost of $CO_2$ reduction is added in the economic analysis of hydrogen production processes. Therefore many different results are suggested from these analyses about old processes, and modified schemes are studying for the efficient development. In this review, status for the technology of hydrogen production from natural gas are summarized.

Biogas is a byproduct after anaerobic digestion of organic materials and has been used as an energy source for heating and generating electricity. Demands of methanol for fuel mixed with gasoline and reactant in biodiesel production are steadily being increased. In this review, we summarized recent advancements in direct partial oxidation of methane to methanol with the brief history of methanol synthesis. The steam reforming and the catalytic oxidation of methane to methanol were compared, the former of which are mainly used in industrial scale and the latter in a stage of research and development. On the basis of this review, the possibility of methanol conversion from biogas was proposed in the aspects of the technological feasibility and the economical practicability.
A dense mixed ionic and electronic conducting ceramic membrane is one of the most promising materials because it can be used for separation of oxygen from the mixture gas. The $ABO_3$ perovskite structure shows high chemical stability at high temperatures under reduction and oxidation atmospheres. $BaCo_{1-x-y}Fe_xZr_yO_{3-{\delta}}$ (BCFZ) was well-known material as high mechanical strength, low thermal conductivity and stability in the high valence state. Glycine Nitrate Process (GNP) is rapid and effective method for powder synthesis using glycine as a fuel and show higher product crystallinity compared to solid state reaction and citrate-EDTA method. BCFZ was fabricated by modified glycine nitrate process. In order to control the burn-up reaction, $NH_4NO_3$ was used as extra nitrate. According to X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) results, BCFZ was single phase regardless of Zr dopants from y=0.1 to 0.3 on B sites. The green compacts were sintered at $1200^{\circ}C$ for 2 hours. Oxygen permeability, methane partial oxidation rate and hydrogen production ability of the membranes were characterized by using Micro Gas Chromatography (Micro GC) under various condition. The high oxygen permeation flux of BCFZ 1-451 was about $1ml{\cdot}cm^{-2}s^{-1}$. Using the humidified Argon gas, BCFZ 1-433 produced hydrogen about $1ml{\cdot}cm^{-2}s^{-1}$.
