  • An experimental study has been conducted to investigate the effects of equivalence ratio on the propagation characteristics of $CH_4$-air premixed flame intervened by an ultrasonic standing wave. A Schlieren photography was used for the flame structure visualization, and the flame propagation behavior was investigated in detail throughout the post-processing analysis. It is found that the structural variation of methane/air premixed flame caused by the intervention of ultrasonic standing wave give rise to the enhancement of combustion reaction and flame propagation velocity. Effectiveness of the standing wave on the flame velocity decreases as the equivalence ratio increases. Larger flame velocity with the standing wave becomes undistinguishable in a specific range of equivalence ratios.

  • Strength of juvenile black seabream (Acanthopagrus schlegeli) produced in the different types of hatchery for wild stock enhancement was evaluated in terms of resistances against anesthetizing agent, tricaine methane sulfonate (MS-222), and dry exposure. The working dosages of MS-222 varied significantly with two different water temperature and hatchery populations. Namely, water temperature $22^{\circ}C$ populations were less resistant against the chemical over water temperature $12^{\circ}C$ ones. MS-222 effects also differed with the fish with different growth histories. The fish seeds in collected from wild showed stronger resistances, earlier recoveries, and lower mortalities, compared to those cultured in land-based tank. Similar results were achieved in the juveniles challenged to dry exposure. These results suggest that wild population of black seabream are more resistant against anesthetic stress, expressed as anesthesia, recovery, and mortality, and further that the population are "healthier" than others.

  • To obtain basic design criteria for underground anaerobic digestion and enhance biogas production from swine slurry, a $20m^3$ underground anaerobic digester (UGAD) was constructed and operated at mesophilic ($31{\sim}37^{\circ}C$) temperature with an organic loading rate (OLR) at $23.6kgVS/m^3/day$. The average biogas and $CH_4$ production rate were observed at 8.62 and $5.78m^3/day$, respectively. The mean percentile of $CH_4$ and $CO_2$ were also observed at 67.5% and 19.6%. The relative biogas yield was explored at $733L/kg\;VS_{added}$ and $CH_4$ yield was at $495L/kg\;VS_{added}$ respectively. The removal rate of biochemical constituents and pathogens were noticed considerably at 68%, 74%, 79%, 86%, 89%, 81%, 55%, 79%, 98% and 100% on TS, VS, TSS, $BOD_5$, $TCOD_{cr}$, $SCOD_{cr}$, $NH_3-N$, available P, fecal coliforms and Salmonella, respectively. This study suggested that, the modified UGAD system is a greatly desirable for anaerobic digestion for swine slurry with regards to high methane yield and biodegradability.

  • Laboratory-scale experiment using anaerobic fluidized bed reactor was carried out to investigate the prehydrolysis step with caustic soda on the treatment efficiency of anaerobic sludge treatment, since the overall rate-limiting step for the complete anaerobic digestion of sludge was the hydrolysis step by extracellular bacterial enzymes of insoluble polymeric molecules. Reactors received a sludge which had not been pretreated, a 50-50 mixture of pretreated and untreated sludge, and the fully pretreated sludge. Hydraulic retention time of 10, 5, 2.5 days and 1 day were applied with an respective equivalent organic loading rate of 1.17, 2.23, 4.17, 11.24 gCOD/L/d. Reactor with the untreated sludge did not archieve adequate digestion even at the HRT of 5 days, and reactor, which received the 50-50 mixture, operated well at the HRT of 5 days, but began to show signs of unstable digestion at the HRT of 2.5 days. While, reactor, which was fed the hydrolyzed sludge, operated reasonably well at the 2.5 days, but was showing somewhat decrease in removal efficiencies. Results, therefore, have substantiated that the limiting reaction in the anaerobic treatment process is hydrolysis. The soluble COD did not significantly accumulate in the reactor as organic acid form, even when they were highly stressed. It was believed that this resistance to a build-up of organic acids and soluble COD behavior was mainly due to the maintenance of the methane bacteria in the fixed-film system which prevents washout as the organic loading increased. The anaerobic fluidized bed reactor was therefore effective for the digestion of waste activated sludge at short HRT.

  • For a natural gas steam reforming, comparative studies of the performance in a conventional packed-bed reactor and a membrane reactor, a new conceptual reactor consisting of a reactor with series of hydrogen separation membranes, have been performed. Based on experimental kinetics reported by Xu and Froment, a process simulation model was developed with Aspen $HYSYS^{(R)}$, a commercial process simulator, and effects of various operating conditions like temperature, $H_2$ permeance, and Ar sweep gas flow rate on the performance in a membrane reactor were investigated in terms of reactant conversion and $H_2$ yield enhancement showing improved $H_2$ yield and methane conversion in a membrane reactor. In addition, a preliminary cost estimation focusing on natural gas consumption to supply heat required for the system was carried out and feasibility of possible cost savings in a membrane reactor was assessed with a cost saving of 10.94% in a membrane reactor.
