  • Korea is the 11th largest energy consumption country and 96% of its total energy consumption depends on imports from overseas. Therefore it is a very important task to secure renewable energy sources which can reduce both the carbon-dioxide emission and dependency on overseas energy imports. Among the various renewable energy sources, organic wastes are important sources. In Korea, 113 million toe of methane is generated from organic wastes annually, but only 3.7% is effectively used for energy conversion. Thus, it is very important to make better use of organic wastes, especially for power generation. The goals of this project are to develope the fuel supplying system of Bio Gasturbine (GT) for 5MW-class co-generation system. The fuel supplying system mainly consists of $H_2S$ removal system, Bio Gas compression system, Siloxane removal system and moisture separating systems. The fuel requirement of 5MW-class GT is at around 60% of $CH_4$, $H_2S$ (<30 ppm), Siloxane(<10 mg/$nm^3$) and supply pressure (> 25 bar) from biogas compressor. Main mechnical charateristics of Bio Gasturbine system have the specific performance; 1) high speed turbine speed (12,840 rpm) 2) very clean emmission NOx (<50 ppm) 3) high efficiency of energy conversion rate. This paper focuses on the development of design technology for food waste biogas pretreatment system for 5MW-class biogas turbine. The study also has the plan to replace the fuel of gas turbine and other distributed power systems. As the increase of bioenergy, this system help to contribute to spread more New & Renewable Energy and the establishment of Renewable Portfolio Standards (RPS) for Korea.

  • Depending on the Bio-gas sources, main component gases of $CH_4$ and $CO_2$ are shown to be variously present in amounts. For the anaerobic digester, The concentration of $CH_4$ and $CO_2$ in the gases are 60~70 and 30~35 vol%. For the landfill gas, $CH_4$ and $CO_2$ are 40~60 and 40~60 vol%. For the food wastes, $CH_4$ and $CO_2$ are 60~80 and 20~40 vol%, respectively. In this study, maximum conversion rates of $CO_2$ were obtained from the variety of concentrations of $CH_4$ and $CO_2$ by the catalysts of reforming reactions. Moreover, in order to get maximum producing amount of synthetic gas, experimental studies were performed to optimize the reaction variables. On the basis of $CH_4$, 243 ml, R [$CH_4/(O2+CO_2)$] value were varied from 0.8 to 1.35, in the study of $CH_4$ and $CO_2$ reforming reactions. It was shown that the optimal results were obtained for 1.35 of R value. And also, at $850^{\circ}C$ and 1 atm, the production rate of synthetic gas was 90% and the conversion rates of $CH_4$ and $CO_2$ were higher than 99% and 90%, respectively.

  • For a natural gas steam reforming, comparative studies of the performance in a conventional packed-bed reactor and a membrane reactor, a new conceptual reactor consisting of a reactor with series of hydrogen separation membranes, have been performed. Based on experimental kinetics reported by Xu and Froment, a process simulation model was developed with Aspen $HYSYS^{(R)}$, a commercial process simulator, and effects of various operating conditions like temperature, $H_2$ permeance, and Ar sweep gas flow rate on the performance in a membrane reactor were investigated in terms of reactant conversion and $H_2$ yield enhancement showing improved $H_2$ yield and methane conversion in a membrane reactor. In addition, a preliminary cost estimation focusing on natural gas consumption to supply heat required for the system was carried out and feasibility of possible cost savings in a membrane reactor was assessed with a cost saving of 10.94% in a membrane reactor.

  • Continuous dry anaerobic digestion of organic solid wastes (30% TS, Total Solids) comprised of food waste and paper was performed under mesophilic condition. During the operation, hydraulic retention time (HRT) was decreased as follows: 150 d, 100 d, 60 d, and 40 d, which corresponded to the solid loading rate of 2.0, 3.0, 5.0, and 7.5 kg TS/$m^3$/d, respectively. Volumetric biogas production rate ($m^3$/$m^3$/d) increased as HRT decreased, and the highest biogas production rate of 3.49${\pm}$0.31 $m^3$/$m^3$/d was achieved at 40 d of HRT. At this HRT, high volatile solids (VS) reduction of 76% was maintained, and methane production yield of 0.25 $m^3$/kg $TS_{added}$ was achieved, indicating 67.4% conversion of organic solid waste to bioenergy. The highest biogas production yield of 0.52 $m^3$/kg $TS_{added}$ was achieved at 100 d of HRT, but it did not change much with respect to HRT. For the ease feed pumping, some amount of digester sludge was recycled and mixed with fresh feed to decrease the solid content. Recirculation volume of 5Q was found to be the optimal in this experimental condition. Specific methanogenic activity (SMA) of microorganisms at mesophilic-dry condition was 2.66, 1.94, and 1.20 mL $CH_4$/g VS/d using acetate, butyrate, and propionate as a substrate, respectively.

  • Dry reduction using natural gas was proposed to recover tin from waste tin oxide generated in a tin bath that was used for controlling the smoothness of architectural glass during production, and the reduction behavior was investigated. The utilized vertical natural gas dry reduction system is capable to process 4 L or 20 kg depending on input raw materials. The system was established by applying the upper intake and lower discharge method. The recovery rate was 97.2% at 800 ℃ and 4 sccm flow rate and increased with the amount of input gas. Hydrogen accounted for 23% of the discharge gas, showing a 16.6% hydrogen conversion rate. The reaction behavior of tin recovered via natural gas reduction provides basic data on the new waste resource reduction/recovery technology.

  • An efficient Pd-coated $La_{0.1}Sr_{0.9}Co_{0.2}Fe_{0.8}O_{3-{\delta}}$ (LSCF-1928) catalyst for total oxidation of methane under landfill gas at low tmeperature has been developed. Synergism was observed between Pd coating and LSCF-1928 substrate. When Pd coating on LSCF-1928, we used electroless plating method and conformed characteristic of catalyst through TPR(Temperature Programmed Reduction) analysis, XRD(X-ray Diffraction) analysis, SEM(Scanning Electron Microscope). The results demonstrated that the Pd coated LSCF-1928 catalysts showed higher performance than non-Pd LSCF-1928. Pd coated LSCF-1928 had low total oxidation temperature of methane (< $475^{\circ}C$) which is lower than total oxidation temperature of methane about non-Pd LSCF-1928 catalysts (= $475^{\circ}C$). Also, $O_2$ conversion rate was higher than non-Pd LSCF-1928 at same temperature.

  • The present experiment was designed to investigate the effects of extruded linseed supplementation on methane production in Holstein steers. Four Holstein steers fitted with permanent cannulas were assigned to two dietary treatments in a duplicated $2{\times}2$ Latin square design: a control diet consisting of tall fescue straw (65%) and concentrate (35%), and a treatment diet supplemented with 3.8% extruded linseed by replacing a part of ingredients in the concentrate of the control diet. The concentrates of the control and the treatment diet were isoenergetic and isonitrogenous. Extruded linseed supplementation did not affect dry matter intake but significantly (P<0.05) increased the intake of lipid. Rumen pH was significantly (P<0.05) lower for control than for treatment. Although there was no significant difference between treatments, the concentration of total VFA in control was 21% higher than in treatment. The concentrations of acetic acid, propionic acid and butyric acid were not different between treatments. Extruded linseed supplementation significantly (P<0.05) reduced methane output(g/d) and emission factor. Methane conversion rate was lower for treatment than for control but no significant difference was found. The results of the present study showed that extruded linseed supplementation in the diet of Holstein steers could reduce methane output.

  • A numerical analysis on condensation and coagulation of the metallic species with fly ash particles pre-existing in an incinerator was performed. Waste was simplified as a mixture of methane, chlorine, and small amounts of Pb and Sn. Vapor-phase amounts of Pb- and Sn -compounds were first calculated assuming a thermodynamic equilibrium state. Then theories on vapor-to-particle conversion, vapor condensation onto the fly ash particles, and particle-particle interaction were examined and incorporated into equations of aerosol dynamics and vapor continuity. It was assumed that the particles followed a log-normal size distribution and thus a moment model was developed in order to predict the particle concentration and the particle size distribution simultaneously. Distributions of metallic vapor concentration (or vapor pressure) were also obtained. Temperature drop rate of combustion gas, fly ash concentration and its size were selected as parameters influencing the discharged amount of metallic species. In general, the coagulation between the newly formed metal particles and the fly ash particles was much greater than that between the metal particles themselves or between the fly ash particles themselves. It was also found that the amount of metallic species discharged into the atmosphere was increased due to coagulation. While most of PbO vapors produced from the combustion were eliminated due to combined effect of condensation and coagulation, the highly volatile species, PbCl$_{2}$ and SnCl$_{4}$ vapors tended to discharge into the atmosphere without experiencing either the condensation or the coagulation. For Sn vapors the tendency was between that of PbO vapors and that of PbCl$_{2}$ or SnCl$_{4}$. To restrain the discharged amount of hazardous metallic species, the coagulation should be restrained, the number concentration and the size of pre-existing fly ash particles should be increased, and the temperature drop rate of combustion gas should be kept low.

  • An obligatory type II methanotroph Methylosinus trichosporium OB3b was cultivated on methanol as a sole carbon and energy source. The effects of methanol concentration, pH, temperature, nitrogen source and phosphate concentration on cell growth were investigated and the results were compared with the growth on methane, which had been studied previously. When $(NH_4)_2SO_4$ was used as a nitrogen source, the maximal specific growth rate (${\mu}max$) on methanol was $0.20hr^{-1}$ and the carbon conversion efficiency(CCE) was 43%. In comparison, on methane, ${\mu}max$ and CCE were $0.08hr^{-1}$ and 32%, respectively. Ammonia was found to be a better nitrogen source for methanol-growing cells. Cell yield on nitrogen (YX/N) was the same regardless of nitrogen source as 7.14g dry cells/g N, but the yield on methanol(YX/N) was higher with ammonia(0.8g dry cells/g MeOH) than with nitrate(0.64g dry cells/g MeOH). Optimal pH and temperature were 7.0 and $30^{\circ}C$, respectively. Methanol inhibition on cell growth was observed at above 0.5%(v/v). Inhibition by phosphate was observed at above 60mM, although the inhibition on methanol dehydrogenase activity started at a much lower level of 20mM. Based on the experimental findings, the cellular physiology of M. trichosporium OB3b growing on the two closely-related carbon sources were discussed extensively.

  • Biogas is a carbon neutral energy and consists of mostly methane and carbon dioxide, with smaller amounts of water vapor, and trace amounts of $H_2S$, Siloxane and other impurities. Hydrogen sulfide and Siloxane usually must be removed before the gas can be used for generation of electricity or heat. The goals of this project are to develope the Fuel conditioning system of Land Fill Gas for 30kW-Micro Gas Turbine co-generation system. The fuel conditioning system mainly consists of $H_2S$ removal system, Land Fill Gas compressor, Siloxane removal system and many filtering systems. The fuel requirement of 30kW MGT is at least 32% of $CH_4$, $H_2S$ (<30 ppm), Siloxane (<5ppb) and supply pressure (> 0.6 MPa) from LFG compressor. Main mechnical charateristics of Micro Gas Turbine system by using LFG have the specific performance; 1) high speed turbine speed (96,000 rpm) 2) very clean emmission NOx (<9 ppm) 3) high efficiency of energy conversion rate. This paper focuses on the development of design technology for LFG fuel conditioning system. The study also has the plan to replace the fuel of gas turbine and other distributed power systems. As the increase of Land Fill Gas (LFG), this system help to contribute to spread more New & Renewable Energy and the establishment of Renewable Portfolio Standards (RPS) for Korea.
