  • Waterborne polyurethane dispersion (WPUD) was prepared from polycarbonate diol (PCD), isophorone diisocyanate (IPDI) and dimethylol propionic acid (DMPA) as starting materials. Then, waterborne acrylic polyurethane dispersion (AUD) was synthesized by reacting the WPUD with different types of acrylate monomers, such as methyl methacrylate (MMA), 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) and butyl acrylate (BA). Subsequently, the AUD was mixed with multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) to yield a conductive coating solution, and the mixture was coated on the polycarbonate substrate. The pencil hardness, abrasion resistance and chemical resistance of the coating films from AUD were improved than those from WPUD, while the electrical conductivity of the coating films from AUD was decreased than that of WPUD. Also, the effect of acrylate types on the properties of coating films was investigated. The AUD obtained from HEMA showed the strongest pencil hardness, while the AUD obtained from MMA exhibited the strongest abrasion resistance, chemical resistance and electrical conductivity among several types of acrylate monomers.

  • PURPOSE. The aim of this study was to appraise the some mechanical properties of polymethyl methacrylate based denture base resin polymerized by copolymerization mechanism, and to investigate the cytotoxic effect of these copolymer resins. MATERIALS AND METHODS. 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) and isobutyl methacrylate (IBMA) were added to monomers of conventional heat polymerized and injection-molded poly methyl methacrylate (PMMA) resin contents of 2%, 3%, and 5% by volume and polymerization was carried out. Three-point bending test was performed to detect flexural strength and the elasticity modulus of the resins. To determine the statistical differences between the study groups, the Kruskall-Wallis test was performed. Then pairwise comparisons were performed between significant groups by Mann-Whitney U test. Agar-overlay test was performed to determine cytotoxic effect of copolymer resins. Chemical analysis was determined by FTIR spectrum. RESULTS. Synthesis of the copolymer was approved by FTIR spectroscopy. Within the conventional heat-polymerized group maximum transverse strength had been seen in the HEMA 2% concentration; however, when the concentration ratio increased, the strength decreased. In the injection-molded group, maximum transverse strength had been seen in the IBMA 2% concentration; also as the concentration ratio increased, the strength decreased. Only IBMA showed no cytotoxic effect at low concentrations when both two polymerization methods applied while HEMA showed cytotoxic effect in the injection-molded resins. CONCLUSION. Within the limitations of this study, it may be concluded that IBMA and HEMA may be used in low concentration and at high temperature to obtain non-cytotoxic and durable copolymer structure.

  • In this study the cycloaddition of glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) and $CO_2$ using ionic liquid as catalyst was performed for the technology of $CO_2$ reduction. The structure of synthesized cyclic carbonate, [2-oxo-1,3-dioxolan-4-yl]methacrylate (DOMA) was analyzed and confirmed by FT-IR and $^1H$-NMR. The change in conversion with respect to reaction time was investigated using $^1H$-NMR. Interestingly, the ionic polymerization of vinyl groups and crosslinking reaction between cyclic carbonate rings of DOMA were observed following completion of cycloaddition.

  • Multi core-shell composite particles were prepared by the water-born emulsion polymerization of various core monomers such as methyl methacrylate (MMA), ethyl methacrylate (EMA) and shell monomers such as MMA, EMA, 2-hydroxyl ethyl methacrylate (2-HEMA), glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) and methacrylic acid (MAA) in the presence of different concentrations of sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate (SDBS). The following conclusions are drawn from the conversion, particle size and distribution, average molecular weight, molecular structure, glass transition temperature with DSC, contact angle after plasma treatment, tensile strength and isothermal decomposition kinetics. In the case of the concentration of 0.02 wt% SDBS, the conversion of MMA core-(EMA/GMA) shell composite particles was excellent as 98.5%. In the case of the concentration of 0.03 wt% SDBS, the particle size of EMA core-(MMA/GMA) shell composite particles was high as $0.48{\mu}m$. We confirmed that 3 points of glass transition temperatures appear for multi core-shell composite particles compared to 1~2 points of glass transition temperatures appear for general copolymer particles. Overall, the adhesion strength of shell composite particles was in the order of EMA/MAA > EMA/2-HEMA > EMA/GMA.

  • Objectives: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the polymerization shrinkage stress among conventional methacrylate-based composite resins and a silorane-based composite resin. Materials and Methods: The strain gauge method was used for the determination of polymerization shrinkage strain. Specimens were divided by 3 groups according to various composite materials. Filtek Z-250 (3M ESPE) and Filtek P-60 (3M ESPE) were used as a conventional methacrylate-based composites and Filtek P-90 (3M ESPE) was used as a silorane-based composites. Measurements were recorded at each 1 second for the total of 800 seconds including the periods of light application. The results of polymerization shrinkage stress were statistically analyzed using One way ANOVA and Tukey test (p = 0.05). Results: The polymerization shrinkage stress of a silorane-based composite resin was lower than those of conventional methacrylate-based composite resins (p < 0.05). The shrinkage stress between methacrylate-based composite resin groups did not show significant difference (p > 0.05). Conclusions: Within the limitation of this study, silorane-based composites showed lower polymerization shrinkage stress than methacrylate-based composites. We need to investigate more into polymerization shrinkage stress with regard to elastic modulus of silorane-based composites for the precise result.

  • The physical properties of graft polymerized silk fibre were investigated with various vinyl monomers. 1. The graft polymerization of styrene and methyl methacrylate onto raw silk reduced the tenacity and elongation of raw silk due to fixation of sericin covering silk fibre in, but the styrene grafting was more effective for sericin fixation of raw silk than the methyl methacrylate one. 2. The water absorbability of glycidyl methacrylate grafted silk increased 14.6% greater than that of methyl methacrylate grafted silk at the same degree of grafting polymerization. 3. The degree of grafting polymerization was increased mostly with ethylene glycol methacrylate. The water absorbability of ethylene glycol methacrylate grafted silk was higher than that of glycidyl methacrylate or ethyl acrylate grafted silk. But the grafted silk fabric increased the fabric flexural rigidity which was negatively related with the favorability of fabric hand-touch, as compared with that of nongrafted silk fabric. 4. The evenness of graft polymerization could be improved by agitating the polymerization bath at the fixed interval by reducing the inter size deviation of grafted silk skein and the thickness deviation of grafted silk fabric.

  • n-Paraffin and saturated fatty acid methyl esters in the diesel and bio-diesel fuel crystallize at low temperature. Many articles have addressed various solutions for the low temperature crystallization problem and one of them is the use of methacrylate copolymers. In this work, we synthesized a series of copolymers in the reaction condition of 70 : 30 molar ratio of lauryl methacrylate (LMA) (or stearyl methacrylate (SMA)) and alkyl methacrylates. The structures of the copolymers were characterized by $^1H$-NMR and FT-IR spectroscopy, and the molecular weight of copolymers were obtained from Gel Permeation Chromatography (GPC) method. The concentrations of additives were 500~1000 ppm and 1000~10000 ppm in diesel fuels and bio-diesel fuel (BD5 and BD20), respectively. The addition of copolymers changes the many properties of fuel such as the pour point (PP), cloud point (CP) and cold filtering plugging point (CFPP). For example, the low temperature properties of the copolymers containing SMA ($PSMAmR_2n$) were excellently improved about 15, 7, and $10^{\circ}C$ for PP, CP and CFPP, respectively.

  • A variety of techniques has been employed in order to reduce problems caused by the crystallization of paraffin and saturated fatty acid esters in diesel fuel containing biodiesels. Methacrylate copolymers are known as additives which reduce the pour point and cold filtering plugging point (CFPP) of diesel fuels. This paper describes the synthesis, characterization and low temperature properties, having as an initial step the synthesis of the alkyl methacrylate monomers by esterification of methacrylic acid with C12, C18, and C22 fatty alcohols. The copolymerization of these monomers with styrene was then performed, with molar ratios of 30:70, 50:50 and 70:30 for styrene:alkyl methacrylate. All copolymers were characterized by $^1H-NMR$, FT-IR, and gel permeation chromatography (GPC). The poly(styrene-co-alkyl methacrylate)s (PStmSMAn) leads to a large reduction in the pour point and CFPP of poly(styrene-co-alkyl methacrylate) in ultra low sulfur diesel (ULSD) and BD5 with treated 100~5000 ppm of poly(styrene-co-alkyl methacrylate). BD5 fuel containing 5000 ppm of the copolymer (PSt82SMA18) showed a $25^{\circ}C$ and $9^{\circ}C$ reduction in their pour points and CFPP, respectively.
