In this paper we have investigated latitudinal variations of the poleward boundary of the nightside auroral oval when the magnetosphere is hit by an enhanced solar wind dynamic pressure front. We used precipitating particle data obtained from Defense Meteorological Satellite Program satellites to identify the locations of the boundary before and after enhanced pressure impacts. The boundary locations are represented by a parameter called "b5e". After performing the analysis for a number of events, we found that the basic effect of the solar wind pressure increase impact is often (but not always) to move the poleward boundary of the nightside auroral oval poleward. However, this effect can be often modified by other factors, such as simultaneous variations of the interplanetary magnetic field with a pressure increase, and thus the boundary response is not necessarily a poleward shift in many cases. We demonstrate this with specific examples, and discuss other possible complicating factors.
Estimation of crop consumptive use is a key term of agricultural water resource systems design and operation. The 10-year return period drought has special aspects as a reference period in design process of irrigation systems in terms of agricultural water demand analysis so that crop evapotranspiration (ETc) about the return period also has to be analyzed to assist understanding of crop water requirement of paddy rice. In this study, The ETc of 10-year return period drought was computed using frequency analysis by 54 meteorological stations. To find an optimal probability distribution, 8 types of probability distribution function were tested by three the goodness of fit tests including ${\chi}^2$(Chi-Square), K-S (Kolmogorov-Smirnov) and PPCC (Probability Plot Correlation Coefficient). Optimal probability distribution function was selected the 2-parameter Log-Normal (LN2) distribution function among 8 distribution functions. Using the two selected distribution functions, the ETc of 10-year return period drought was estimated for 54 meteorological stations and compared with prior study results suggested by other researchers.
The purpose of this study was to analyze the characteristics of fine particles concentration and meteorological parameters, and long range transport of wintertime Asian dust at Busan. Also we studied occurrence frequency and tendency of wintertime Asian dust from 1961 to 2010 in Korea. Asian dust occurred most frequently in the spring, the next to winter in Korea. Wintertime Asian dust is steadily increasing recently. Asian dust in Busan was the most occurred in 2001 with 21 days, followed by 12 days in 2002, and 10 days in 2006. The annual mean frequency during the past 12 years(1999~2010) was 7.5 days, and it was two times more than that during the past 50 years(3.8 days). Wintertime Asian dust in Busan has occurred 6 episodes since 2008, and it all occurred in December except for 20 Feb. 2009. The highest concentration of wintertime Asian dust was recorded mostly at Hakjangdong and Jangrimdong which are industrial area. Maintenance time of Asian dust at Busan was from 1hr 30min to 9hr 20min, it was shorter than in the spring. It took from 10 to 15 hours move to Busan after Asian dust was first detected in Korea. Wintertime Asian dust originated from Gobi desert in Mongolia and inner Mongolia near China, except for 9 Dec. 2008 at Busan.
This paper addresses two types of uncertainty: stochastic uncertainty and subjective uncertainty in probabilistic accident consequence assessments. The off-site consequence assessment code OSCAAR has been applied to uncertainty and sensitivity analyses on the individual risks of early fatality and latent cancer fatality in the population outside the plant boundary due to a severe accident. A new stratified meteorological sampling scheme was successfully implemented into the trajectory model for atmospheric dispersion and the statistical variability of the probability distributions of the consequence was examined. A total of 65 uncertain input parameters was considered and 128 runs of OSCAAR with 144 meteorological sequences were performed in the parameter uncertainty analysis. The study provided the range of uncertainty for the expected values of individual risks of early and latent cancer fatality close to the site. In the sensitivity analyses, the correlation/regression measures were useful for identifying those input parameters whose uncertainty makes an important contribution to the overall uncertainty for the consequence. This could provide valuable insights into areas for further research aiming at reducing the uncertainties.
Cloud droplet activation process is well described by $K{\ddot{o}}hler$ theory and several parameterizations based on $K{\ddot{o}}hler$ theory are used in a wide range of models to represent this process. Here, we test the two different method of calculating the solute effect in the $K{\ddot{o}}hler$ equation, i.e., osmotic coefficient method (OSM) and ${\kappa}-K{\ddot{o}}hler$ method (KK). To do that, each method is implemented in the cloud droplet activation parameterization module of WRF-CHEM (Weather Research and Forecasting model coupled with Chemistry) model. It is assumed that aerosols are composed of five major components (i.e., sulfate, organic matter, black carbon, mineral dust, and sea salt). Both methods calculate similar representative hygroscopicity parameter values of 0.2~0.3 over the land, and 0.6~0.7 over the ocean, which are close to estimated values in previous studies. Simulated precipitation, and meteorological variables (i.e., specific heat and temperature) show good agreement with reanalysis. Spatial patterns of precipitation and liquid water path from model results and satellite data show similarity in general, but on regional scale spatial patterns and intensity show some discrepancy. However, meteorological variables, precipitation, and liquid water path do not show significant differences between OSM and KK simulations. So we suggest that the relatively simple KK method can be a good alternative to the OSM method that requires various information of density, molecular weight and dissociation number of each individual species in calculating the solute effect.
The local wind systems in the Pohang region were categorized into wind sectors. Still, thorough knowledge of wind resource assessment, wind environment analysis, and atmospheric environmental impact assessment was required since the region has outstanding wind resources, it is located on the path of typhoon, and it has large-scale atmospheric pollution sources. To overcome the resolution limitation of meteorological dataset and problems of categorization criteria of the preceding studies, the high-resolution wind resource map of the Korea Institute of Energy Research was used as time-series meteorological data; the 2-step method of determining the clustering coefficient through hierarchical clustering analysis and subsequently categorizing the wind sectors through non-hierarchical K-means clustering analysis was adopted. The similarity of normalized time-series wind vector was proposed as the Euclidean distance. The meteor-statistical characteristics of the mean vector wind distribution and meteorological variables of each wind sector were compared. The comparison confirmed significant differences among wind sectors according to the terrain elevation, mean wind speed, Weibull shape parameter, etc.
A better approach for assessing meteorological drought occurrences is increasingly important in mitigating and adapting to the impacts of climate change, as well as strategies for developing early warning systems. The present study defines meteorological droughts as a period with an abnormal precipitation deficit based on monthly precipitation data of 18 gauging stations for the Han River watershed in the past (1974-2015). This study utilizes a Bayesian parameter estimation approach to analyze the effects of climate change on future drought (2025-2065) in the Han River Basin using the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6 (CMIP6) with four bias-corrected general circulation models (GCMs) under the Shared Socioeconomic Pathway (SSP)2-4.5 scenario. Given that drought is defined by several dependent variables, the evaluation of this phenomenon should be based on multivariate analysis. Two main characteristics of drought (severity and duration) were extracted from precipitation anomalies in the past and near-future periods using the copula function. Three parameters of the Archimedean family copulas, Frank, Clayton, and Gumbel copula, were selected to fit with drought severity and duration. The results reveal that the lower parts and middle of the Han River basin have faced severe drought conditions in the near future. Also, the bivariate analysis using copula showed that, according to both indicators, the study area would experience droughts with greater severity and duration in the future as compared with the historical period.
Guyed mast structures exhibit characteristics such as high flexibility, low mass, small damping ratio, and large aspect ratio, leading to a complex wind-induced vibration response mechanism. This study analyzed the time- and frequency-domain characteristics of the wind-induced response of a guyed mast structure using measured acceleration response data obtained from the Shenzhen Meteorological Gradient Tower (SZMGT). Firstly, 734 sets of 1-hour acceleration samples measured from 0:00 October 1, 2021, to 0:00 November 1, 2021, were selected to study the vibration shapes of the mast and the characteristics of the generalized extreme value (GEV) distribution. Secondly, six sets of typical samples with different vibration intensities were further selected to explore the Gaussian property and modal parameter characteristics of the mast. Finally, the modal parameters of the SZMGT are identified and the identification results are verified by finite element analysis. The findings revealed that the guyed mast vibration shape exhibits remarkable diversity, which increases nonlinearly along the height in most cases and reaches a maximum at the top of the tower. Moreover, the GEV distribution characteristics of the 734 sets of samples are closer to the Weibull distribution. The probability distribution of the structural wind vibration response under strong wind is in good agreement with the Gaussian distribution. The structural response of the mast under wind loading exhibits multiple modes. As the structural response escalates, the first three orders of modal energy in the tower display a gradual increase in proportion.
The radiative properties of atmospheric aerosol are determined by the mass and chemical characteristics, and optical properties such as aerosol optical depth (AOD), ngstr m parameter ( $\alpha$) and single scattering albedo (SSA). In particular these aerosol optical properties also determine surface temperature perturbation that may give some information in understanding the regional atmospheric radiative forcing. For understanding the radiative forcing and regional surce of aerosol, this paper summarizes and compares the aerosol optical properties results from and compares the atmospheric aerosol optical properties results from two different experiments: Anmyeon 2000 and Jeju 2001. Korea Global Atmosphere Watch Observatory (KGAWO) at Anmyeon island and ACE-Asia super-site at Gosan Jeju island have measured the radiations and aerosols since the year of 2000. The sites are located in the mid-west and south of Korea peninsula where it is strongly affected by the Asian dust coming from China region in every spring. Aerosol optical properties over both sites were measured through the ground-based sun and sky radiometers were analyzed for understanding the radiation and climate properties. Number concentration and chemical components of aerosol were additionally analyzed for the source estimation in the transportation. The frequency distributions of aerosol optical depth are rather narrow with a modal vaiue of 0.38 at both sites. However, the distributions of show one peak (1.13) at Jeju but two peaks (0.63 and 1.13) at Anmyeon. In the cases of Anmyeon, one peak around 0.63 corresponds to relatively dust-free cases, and the second peak around 1.13 characterizes the situation when Asian dust is presented. The correlation between AOD and resulted high correlation on the wide range with high values of optical depth at Anmyeon, otherwise a narrow range of with moderate to low AOD at Jeju. In dust free condition SSA decrease with waveleneth while in the presence of Asian dust SSA either stays neutral or increases slightly with wavelength. The change of surface temperature shows the stronger positive correlations with aerosol optical depth increase at Anmyeon than Jeju. In the chemical properties the aerosol are related to high concentrations in inorganic matters, SO$^4$, NO$_3$, CA2+ in fine and coarse.
Constantly enhancing positioning accuracy by the Global Positioning System (GPS) technique is of great importance, but challenging, especially after the GPS positioning technique has been improved considerably during the past two decades. The associated main error sources have been reduced substantially, if not eliminated. Troposhpeic influence with its highly temporal and spatial variability appears to be one of the major error sources. It is hence an increased interest among GPS researchers to reduce the tropospheric influence or delay. Two techniques have been commonly implemented to correct the tropospheric impact. The first technique, known as parameter estimation, characterizes the path delay with empirical models and the parameters of interest are determined from the GPS measurements. The second strategy, termed as external correction, involves independent path delay measurements. The present study is an integration of both techniques in which the parameter estimation as well as external correction are used to correct the path delay for $110{\sim}210$ km range baselines. Twenty-four parameters have been obtained in 24 hours solution by setting the cutoff angle at 3 and 15 degrees for parameter estimation strategy. Measurements from meteorological instruments and water vapor radiometer (WVR) are applied in the GPS data processing, separately, as an external strategy of present research work. Interesting results have been found, indicating more stable repeatability in baseline when the external correction strategy is applied especially with the inclusion of WVR observations. The offset of an order of 1 cm is found in the baselines determined by the two strategies. On the other hand, parameter estimation exhibits more stable in terms of GPS height repeatability. The offset in the GPS height determined by the two strategies is on the order of few centimeters.
