Land-surface and soil processes significantly affect mesoscale local weather systems as well as global/regional climate. In this study, characteristics of land-surface models (LSMs) and soil models (SMs) that are frequently coupled into mesoscale meteorological models are investigated. In addition, detailed analyses on three LSMs, employed by the PSU/NCAR MM5, are provided. Some impacts of LSMs on heavy rainfall prediction are also discussed.
Wind velocity is one of the primary variables for describing atmospheric state from GMS-5. And its accurate depiction is essential for operational weather forecasting and for initialization of NWP(Numerical Weather Prediction) models. The aim of this research is to incorporate imagery from other available spectral channels and examine the error characteristics of winds derived from these images. Multi spectral imagery from GMS-5 was used for this purpose and applied to Korean region with together BoM(Bureau of Meteorology). The derivation of wind velocity estimates from low and high resolution visible, split window infrared, and water vapor images, resulted in improvements in the amount and quality of wind data available for forecasting.

Cluster analysis with meteorological data allows to segment meteorological region based on meteorological characteristics. By the way, meteorological observed data are not adequate for cluster analysis because meteorological stations which observe the data are located not uniformly. Therefore the clustering of meteorological observed data cannot reflect the climate characteristic of South Korea properly. The clustering of $5km{\times}5km$ gridded data derived from a numerical model, on the other hand, reflect it evenly. In this study, we analyzed long-term grid data for temperatures and precipitation using cluster analysis. Due to the monthly difference of climate characteristics, clustering was performed by month. As the result of K-Means cluster analysis is so sensitive to initial values, we used initial values with Ward method which is hierarchical cluster analysis method. Based on clustering of gridded data, cluster of meteorological stations were determined. As a result, clustering of meteorological stations in South Korea has been made spatio-temporal segmentation.

Snowfall is an important natural hazard in Korea. In recent years, the socioeconomic importance of impact-based forecasts of meteorological phenomena have been highlighted. To further develop forecasts, we first need to analyze the climatic characteristics of each region. In this study, homogeneous regions for snowfall analysis were classified using a self-organizing map for impact-based forecast and warning services. Homogeneous regions of snowfall were analyzed into seven clusters and the characteristics of each group were investigated using snowfall, observation days, and maximum snowfall. Daegwallyeong, Gangneung-si, and Jeongeup-si were classified as areas with high snowfall and Gyeongsangdo was classified as an area with low snowfall. Comparison with previous studies showed that representative areas were well distinguished, but snowfall characteristics were found to be different. The results of this study are of relevance to future policy decisions that use impact-based forecasting in each region.
Characteristics of precipitation and temperature in Ulleung-do and Dok-do were analyzed with hourly accumulated precipitation and mean temperature data obtained from Automatic Weather System(AWS) for latest four years(2005~2008). In Ulleung-do, total annual mean precipitation for this period is 1,574.4 mm, which shows larger amount than 1434.2 mm of whole Korean peninsula for latest 10 years(1999~2008) and 1,236.2 mm at Ulleung-do on common years(1971~2000), shows that the trend of precipitation gradually increases during the recent years. This amount is also 1.4 times larger than the total annual mean precipitation of 660.1 mm in Dok-do. Mean precipitation intensity(mm $h^{-1}$) at each time of a day in each month at Ulleung-do represents that the maximum values larger than $3.0\;mm\;h^{-1}$ were shown in May and on 0200 LST, whereas these were found in August and 0700 LST with $3.1\;mm\;h^{-1}$ in Dok-do. The difference of the precipitation amount and its intensity between Uleung-do and Dok-do is explained by the topological effect came from each covering area, and this fact is also identified from similar comparison of the precipitation characteristics for the islands in West Sea. The annual mean temperature of $14.0^{\circ}C$ in Dok-do is $1.2^{\circ}C$ higher than that of $12.8^{\circ}C$ in Ulleung-do. Trends of monthly mean temperature in both islands are shown to increase for the observed period.
In this study, two-step statistical approach including Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and Multiple Linear Regression (MLR) was employed, and main meteorological factors explaining the high-PM2.5 episodes were identified in two regions: Seoul and Busan. We first performed PCA to isolate the Principal Component (PC) that is linear combination of the meteorological variables observed at two levels: surface and 850 hPa level. The employed variables at surface are: temperature (T2m), wind speed, sea level pressure, south-north and west-east wind component and those at 850 hPa upper level variables are: south-north (v850) and west-east (u850) wind component and vertical stability. Secondly we carried out MLR analysis and verified the relationships between PM2.5 daily mean concentration and meteorological PCs. Our two-step statistical approach revealed that in Seoul, dominant factors for influencing the high PM2.5 days are mainly composed of upper wind characteristics in winter including positive u850 and negative v850, indicating that continental (or Siberian) anticyclone had a strong influence. In Busan, however, the dominant factors in explanaining in high PM2.5 concentrations were associated with high T2m and negative u850 in summer. This is suggesting that marine anticyclone had a considerable effect on Busan's high PM2.5 with high temperature which is relevant to the vigorous photochemical secondary generation. Our results of both differences and similarities between two regions derived from only statistical approaches imply the high-PM2.5 episodes in Korea show their own unique characteristics and seasonality which are mostly explainable by two layer (surface and upper) mesoscale meteorological variables.

In this study, characteristics of fog at Mokpo as the west coastal area of Jeonnam were investigated, using statistical analysis of observed fog and meteorological data. Higher frequency of the fog occurrence at Mokpo was showed in spring(32%) and summer(34%) due to the seasonal high atmospheric pressure. Regional characteristics as radiation cooling, advection of fog and water vapor from surrounding sea and Yeongsan lake, and frontal fog had major effect on the coastal fog at Mokpo on the meteorological conditions of north-west/south wind and calm($0{\sim}2m/s$). Also, as the results of analyzing data of before and after the construction of Yeongsan dam, the frequency of annual mean fog days increased 41 %, specially increased 178% in autumn. The increase of fog days mainly resulted from evaporation during colder seasons and from temperature inversion during warmer seasons over the water surface of Yeongsan lake. The construction of Yeongsan dam had a little effect on the meteorological conditions concerning fog occurrence, because Yeongsan dam which only supplies the water for use do not always carry out outlet of the cold water. In addition, the sea fog at Heuksando located in offshore had not effect on the occurrence of fog at Mokpo.
Based on the observation of the microwave radiometers at Cheongju, Hapcheon and Daegwallyeong in Korea, the precipitable water vapor and liquid water path have been analyzed for spatio-temporal characteristics. The observed datas have been validated by comparing precipitable water vapor between the microwave radiometer and the radiosonde near the sites. It resulted in the correlation coefficient of more than 0.8 in all three sites. For three regions, the precipitable water vapor shows similar seasonal variation and diurnal cycle, and that amount of precipitable water vapor increases from around 1000 LST and has a maximum value at 1900 LST. On the other hand, the liquid water path of microwave radiometer has regional differences for its seasonal variation, which seems to be caused by the geographical characteristics including the frequent fog and clouds in Daegwallyeong, a high mountain region (834 m from sea level), almost flat land in Chengju, and Sobaek Mountains in Hapcheon that blocks the westerly clouds.
The characteristics of the typhoon's extratropical transition (ET) over the western North Pacific area were investigated using the cyclone phase space (CPS) diagram method suggested by Hart (2003). The data used in this study were the global data assimilation prediction system (GDAPS) and NCEP data set. The number of typhoons selected were 75 cases during 2002 to 2007, and the three parameters were analyzed : the motion relative thickness asymmetry of the storm (B), the upper thermal wind shear and the lower thermal wind shear. Comparing the best-track data provided by the Regional Specialized Meteorological Center /Tokyo, the time of the ET based on CPS was 2~6 hours earlier than the best-track data. And it was shown that the 400- km and 30 kt wind radius of storm for the CPS method were better agreement than the previous suggested radius 500- km.
Characteristics of meteorological disasters in the southern coast of Korea were analyzed for 20 years from 1989 to 2008 using the Korea meteorological administration's data. The main results are summarized as follows. Yearly mean number and the total number of meteorological disasters in the southern coast of Korea during 20 years are 7.5 and 149, respectively. The highest number appears in July followed by August and the third is September. The meteorological disasters from July to September occupied about 42%. The seasonal mean number is most in summer(about 39% of all), the next orders are the autumn, winter and spring. The meteorological disasters in summer are mainly caused by typhoon and heavy rain. The meteorological disasters of a great scale occurred by typhoons(for example, 9112 GLADYS, 0215 RUSA and 0314 MAEMI) which strike in the southern coast of Korea.
