  • Metamaterials operating in the terahertz frequency range show promising potential for use in highly sensitive microbial sensors that are capable of effectively detecting microorganisms in the ambient environment. We were able to detect extremely small numbers of microorganisms by measuring the differential transmission spectra (DTS) of the metamaterial resonances. This was possible because their sizes are on the same scale as the microgaps of the terahertz metamaterials. DTS depend critically on the number of microorganisms placed in the gap area, and their dielectric constant. In addition, these metamaterial microbial sensors are reusable, because the microorganisms can be completely removed by fungicide solution. Finite-difference time-domain simulations successfully reproduce our experimental data.

  • In this paper, the metamaterial transmission line (TL) based on the complementary spiral resonators (CSRs) and interdigital structure is presented for reducing the phase noise of the voltage-controlled oscillator (VCO). The metamaterial TL is realized by adopting the array of the CSRs etched on the ground plane and the interdigital transmission line on the signal plane. The interdigital TL on the signal plane has been used to obtain higher Q value than the conventional TL without the interdigital structure. The resonance properties and inherent saturation of Q value of the proposed metamaterial TL have been analyzed by varying the width of the TL on the signal plane, dimensions of the CSRs, current directions between the CSRs, number of the unit cell-pair of the CSRs, and whether or not there is the interdigital structure in this paper. The phase noise and tuning range of the proposed VCO are -127.50~-125.33 dBc/Hz at 100 kHz and 5.744~5.852 GHz.

  • This paper discusses how to change the electromagnetic waves' property in the cut-off causing discontinuity existing in the guiding structure of the RF passive component by using the metamaterial and elaborates on its principle. Particularly, we find and explain, from the viewpoint of electromagnetics and circuit theories, the so-called tunneling condition that when the segment with an extremely narrow cross-section leading to blockage in the parallel-plate waveguide is given the ENZ(Epsilon Near Zero) for its filling material, the wave starts to propagate through the segment. The analysis method as a transmission-line theory taking the discontinuity and material change into consideration is shown valid through the comparison with other methods for analyzing parallel-plate waveguides, and provides the illustration of the S-parameters and impedance describing the characteristics of the tunneling.

  • In this paper, we suggest a design method of a metamaterial-based low-profile antenna working at 425 MHz for LEO/Cube satellites. Satellites play an important role in linking th remote nodes in a wireless communication network and covering wide areas of the globe. Especially, an increasing number of universities or individuals aspire having their own satellites and build low-budget structures such as cube satellites in LEO and the ways to reduce the sizes of their satellites. Since the antenna occupies a major portion of the satellite surface, the antenna should be miniaturized for lighter weight. The proposed metamaterial low-profile antenna, unlike the conventional patch antenna, produces such a zeroth-order resonance to create an omnidirectional radiation pattern. Also, it is connected to a UHF waveguide bandpass filter as the feeding system to examine the possible change in the situation that the antenna is combined with the system. The performances of the monopole and proposed metamaterial antennas are compared to one another.

  • This paper describes a miniaturezed metamaterial BT chip antenna for mobile devices. The size of the proposed antenna is $3.0\;mm(W){\times}2.0\;mm(L){\times}1.2\;mm(H)$. And it is fabricated by chip type. The zeroth-order resonant properties are analyzed by magnitude and phase distributions of the surface current using surface current scanning system. The antenna offers omni-directional radiation patterns and measured 3D average gain is over - 1.7 dBi.

  • In this paper, the design of a new bandstop filter with an ultra-wide stopband is proposed using the metamaterial CRLH-TL. Instead of conventional periodic structures and multi-staged CRLH-TLs, extremely small one-cell type is adopted to circumvent the setbacks of conventional filters such as the lengthened ${\lambda}_g/2$-resonator ones or alternating impedance lowpass filter, and relatively slow skirt. Besides, for a very broad stopband, a strong coupling structure including stepped impedances is suggested and the zero-order resonance is made for effective size-reduction. The validity of the proposed design is proven through the fabrication and measurement, showing the overall size less than ${\lambda}_g/10$, the stopband wider than 12 GHz, 0.7 dB of the insertion loss.

  • In this paper, highly linear power amplifier using bandpass filter based on metamaterial and Composite Right- / Left-Handed (CRLH) structure is proposed. The proposed bandpass filter consist of the series capacitor, series microstrip line and the parallel inductor, parallel microstrip line. The insertion loss is minimized at operation frequency and the $2^{nd}$ harmonic is suppressed by the bandpass filter using the CRLH structure. And we improved the Adjacent Channel Leakage Ratio (ACLR) using the characteristic of the proposed bandpass filter. At 2.14 GHz, we have obtained the output power of 38.83 dBm, the $2^{nd}$ harmonic of .61.33 dBc, the $3^{rd}$ IMD of .54.67 dBc, and ACLR of .51.33 dBc at 5 MHz offset, -56.50 dBc at 10 MHz offset, respectively.

  • A new high-gain Fabry-$P{\acute{e}}rot$ cavity antenna for wireless broadband internet(Wibro) base station antennas, which is covered with metamaterial superstrate presenting simultaneous negative values of permittivity and permeability, is proposed. To facilitate the fabrication process using the printed circuit board(PCB) technology of today, a new planar-type metamaterial superstrate is designed, which shows negative and low positive values of a refractive index near the Wibro service frequency band. And the principle of antenna gain enhancement is analyzed from the two different view points of effectively low refractive index and of the Fabry-$P{\acute{e}}rot$ resonance condition. Single square patch antenna is used as a feeder. The separation distance is determined by considering the reflection phases of the metamaterial superstrate and the substrate satisfying Fabry-$P{\acute{e}}rot$ resonance condition, respectively. Comparison between the prediction and the measurement shows good agreement, which verifies the validity of our design approach.

The proposed antenna, which proposed absorber is applied to conventional WCDMA indoor repeater antenna, has isolation over 85 dB. Isolation is improved more than 10 dB compared with the conventional antenna. The VSWR is lower than 2 at WCDMA band from 1.92 GHz to 2.17 GHz. The radiation patterns are $60^{\circ}{\pm}10^{\circ}$ E-plane and H-plane, respectively. And, the gain is more than 6 dBi. The volume of proposed antenna with absorber based on metamaterial is $90mm{\times}90mm{\times}44.8mm$.

  • The multi-band six-port phase correlator using metamaterial was designed and fabricated in this paper. The lumped metamaterial structure that can process the dual-band receiving signal was analyzed. Based on the analyzed results, the small-sized metamatrial six-port phase correlator for multi-band direct conversion method was proposed and fabricated. Also, the resistive power divider and $90^{\circ}$ hybrid coupler that comprises the six-port phase correlator were implemented based on the scattering parameters of metamatrial six-port phase correlator. The measured results of the proposed six-port phase correlator show the good agreement with simulation results. The performance of the six-port phase correlator shows the reflection loss below -20 dB in the dual-band. Also, the proposed six-port phase correlator got a good transmission characteristic within 1 dB gain difference and ${\pm}4.1^{\circ}$ phase imbalance, respectively.
