  • The objective of this paper is to compare the variation of surface properties by hydrochloric acid pre-treatment and of metallic potassium and their salts loading effect for activated carbon after surfaces transformation by acid. From the results of nitrogen adsorption, each isotherm shows a distinct knee band, which is closely related to the characteristic of microporous carbons with capillary condensation in micropores. In order to present the causes of the differences in surface properties and $S_{BET}$ after the samples were treated with hydrochloric acid, pore structure and surface morphology are investigated by adsorption analysis. X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns indicate that activated carbons show better performance for metallic potassium and potassium salts by pre-treatment with hydrochloric acid. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) pictures of potassium/activated carbon particles provide information about the homogeneous distribution of metal or metal complex on the surface. For the chemical composition microanalysis for potassium treatment of the activated carbon pre-treated with hydrochloric acid, samples were analyzed by energy disperse X-ray (EDX). Finally, the type and quality of oxygen groups are determined from the method proposed by Boehm. A positive influence of the acidic groups on the carbon surface by acid treatment is also demonstrated by an increase in the contents of potassium salts with increasing of acidic groups calculated from Boehm titration.

  • In the sewage structures and wastewater facilities, concrete is exposed to hydrogen sulfide ($H_2S$) which acts as an acid material in a solution, and a strongly acidic sulfate ion ($SO{_4}^{-2}$) is generated by a sulfuric bacteria. Hence, a degradation of concrete with biochemical corrosion would be accelerated. Finally, durability of concrete and concrete structures may be greatly reduced. In this study, in order to remove the hydrogen sulfide which is used by the sulfuric bacteria organic-biologically, the antibiotic metal and metallic salt powders were mixed to concrete, and a suppressing performance of the sulfate ion was assessed. For the sulfuric acid bacteria, a comparative evaluation of antimicrobial performance on neutralized concrete specimens were carried out, also by a rapid chloride penetration test, chloride penetration depths and diffusion coefficients were measured for antibiotic concrete in accordance with the amount of metal and metallic salt-based antibacterial agents. Eventually, by an observation of the biochemical state of the surface of concrete specimens exposed outdoors, the performance and applicability of antibiotic concrete were confirmed.

  • Reaction of organic chlorine containing ester, alcohol, and acids with metallic tin and zinc in dimethyl formamide solvent gave a good yield of organo metallic complex. The same reaction under a mixed U.V. irradiation could not give an appreciable yield of the complex except in the case of an elevated reaction temperature. The solvation effect of dimethyl formamide of the metallic complex formation was markedetly increased as compared to the reaction in toluene and cyclohexane. In case of chlorine containing carboxylic acid, the formation of organo chloro zinc complex of the salt was observed. The reaction of organo zinc complex with a carbonyl precursor gave the addition product together with a dimerized product. Especially the aldehyde species enhanced the formation of zinc complex. The addition reaction was simple and convenient, but the yield was not high.(30-40% for the acid, 73% for the ester, 14.6% for alcohol). The result was discussed on basis of solvent effect and the procedures were described.

  • It is to review the current status of magnesium smelting. Raw materials for magnesium source, worldwide production and producers of metallic magnesium, Korean magnesium markets and some important extraction technologies were reviewed. The magnesium extraction technologies were described according to the two major reduction methods: the fused salt electrolysis and the thermal reduction method. Also, the research on the extraction of magnesium from magnesite which has been being carried out at KIGAM was briefly introduced with discussing the related topics on the recycling of the chlorine and the hydrogen chloride gas used in the process.

  • Electrochemical reductions of $UO_2$ at various anode-to-cathode distances (1.3, 2.3, 3.2, 3.7 and 5.8 cm) were carried out to investigate the effect of the anode-to-cathode distance on the electrochemical reduction rate. The geometry of the electrolysis cell in this study, apart from the anode-to-cathode distance, was identical for all of the electrolysis runs. Porous $UO_2$ pellets were electrolyzed by controlling a constant cell voltage in molten $Li_2O-LiCl$ at $650^{\circ}C$. A steel basket containing the porous $UO_2$ pellets and a platinum plate were used as the cathode and anode, respectively. The metallic products were characterized by means of a thermogravimetric analyzer, an X-ray diffractometer and a scanning electron microscope. The electrolysis runs conducted during this study revealed that a short anode-to-cathode distance is advantageous to achieve a high current density and accelerate the electrochemical reduction process.

  • Corrosion resistance and basic physical properties of solid tantalum are not comparable to most of the structural metallic materials. The relative high cost and melting temperature of tantalum are obstacles to be widely applied to general engineering processes. Electrodeposition in molten salt enables compact and uniform tantalum coating. In this study, Ta was coated onto base metal (SUS316L) with different current densities (0.5, 5, $20mA/cm^2$) by using MSE (Molten Salt Electrodeposition). In this study, it showed that deposition efficiency and microstructure of Ta coating layer were strongly depended on current density. In the case of the current density of $5mA/cm^2$, densest microstructure was obtained. The current density above $5mA/cm^2$ caused non-uniform microstructure due to rapid deposition rate. Dense microstructure and intact coating layer contributed to significant corrosion resistance enhancement.

  • Silicate mineral serpentine with magnesium and calcium was selected as a mineral carbonation mediators for carbon dioxide storage. Serpentine has various metallic elements as an oxides form of magnesium, iron, calcium, aluminium etc. Magnesium and calcium could be carbonation salt preferentially than other metal component within serpentine. Systemic thermochemical treatment for serpentine could change physicochemical properties like a surface area and pore dimensions. Due to the rapid chemical reaction rate depended on dimensional values, carbonation formation could determined by surface property change of thermochemical treated serpentine.

  • Contact lines are necessary to supply electric locomotives with electric power. As most railways are gradually electrified with modernized electric cars, the demand for catenary wires and their facilities are also increased. Catenary wires made by metallic materials are generally used in the open air. They are exposed to the marine area with air-borne salt or severely polluted industrial area with much corrosive emission gases depending on the railway locations. In urban area, acid rain may cause a degradation of catenary wire system. Corrosion of catenary wires can make their actual lifetime shorter than that originally designed. Thus, the messenger wires, a kind of catenary wire system, were investigated with respect to corrosion, which include new and the used one collected at the field. They are also vibrated with some amplitude everytime the train passes through the railway. The frequent cyclic load on the wire any result in a fatigue damage, Surface damage by corrosion can make fatigue crack initiate with ease. In the present study, the fatigue life of the used wire was measured 40 to 50% shorter than that of new one in average.

  • The electronic structures of the new organic conducting salts, the β'- and β''-phases of (BEDT-TTF)2[(IBr2)0.2(BrICl)0.1(ICl2)0.7], were examined by calculating their electronic band structures, Fermi surfaces and HOMO-HOMO interaction energies using the extended Huckel tight binding method. On the basis of these calculations, we probed why the β'-phase is semiconducting while the β ''-phase is metallic.
