  • Since metallic foam will increase the performance of heat exchanger, it have caused many researcher's attention recently. Our research base on the model that metallic foams applied to heat exchanger. In this case, there is three kind of heat transfer mechanisms, heat conduction in fibers, heat transfer by conduction in fluid phase, and internal heat change between solid and fluid phases. In this paper, we first discuss the acceptance of applying thermal equilibrium among the two phases. then to calculate the dimensionless temperature profile along 7 metallic foams. The 7 samples have different characteristics, such as area ratio, effective conductivity, porosity, etc.

  • The essential element of brake device for railway vehicle is in demand for higher performance along side the trend of railway vehicle size and speed. Essential element of brake device for high speed train is composed of metallic friction material and brake disc. Thus, brake distance, duration and brake stability shall be determined due to friction materials and friction characteristics. Also friction characteristics are influenced by metallic friction material's properties of matter, manufacturing process and component parts. Various materials and configurations of metallic friction materials are currently being implemented to railway vehicles, For this reason study of friction characteristics in accordance with materials is necessary, but study of these important elements are not actively being accomplished. Therefore, in this study, wished to study the graphite's friction characteristic comprised in friction material in accordance with particle size and amount of volume through lab-scale test.

  • Band engineering of a nanowire is related to the question what is the minimum size of a nanowire-based device. At the subnanometer scale, there has been a long standing problem whether it is possible to both control an energy band of an isolated nanowire by a dopant and measure it using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES). This is because an extra atom in the subnanometer wire plays as a defect rather than a dopant and it is challenging to assemble isolated subnanometer wires into an array for an ARPES measurement. We demonstrate that only one of multiple metallic subnanometer wires canbe controlled electronically by a dopant maintaining the whole metallic bands of other wires, which was observed directly by ARPES. Here, the multiple metallic subnanometer wires were produced on a stepped Si(111) surface by a self-assembly method. The selective band engineering proves that the selectively-controlled metallic wire is nearly isolated electronically from other metallic wires and an electronic structure controlcan be realized down to subnanometer scale.

  • The preparation of $Ti_{50}Cu_{28}Ni_{15}Sn_7$ metallic glass composite powders was accomplished by the mechanical alloying of a pure Ti, Cu, Ni, Sn and carbon nanotube (CNT) powder mixture after 8 h milling. In the ball-milled composites, the initial CNT particles were dissolved in the Ti-based alloy glassy matrix. The bulk metallic glass composite was successfully prepared by vacuum hot pressing the as-milled CNT/$Ti_{50}Cu_{28}Ni_{15}Sn_7$ metallic glass composite powders. A significant hardness increase with the CNT additions was observed for the consolidated composite compacts.

  • Metallic glasses are amorphous meta-stable solids and are now being processed in bulk form suitable for structural applications including impact. Bulk metallic glasses have many unique mechanical properties such as high yield strength and fracture toughness, good corrosion and wear resistance that distinguish them from crystalline metals and alloys. However, only a few studies could be found mentioning the dynamic response and damage of metallic glasses under impact or shock loading. In this study, we employed a small explosive detonator for the dynamic indentation on a Zr-based bulk amorphous metal in order to evaluate the damage behavior of bulk amorphous metal under impact loading. These results were compared with those of spherical indentation under quasi-static and impact loading. The interface bonded specimens were adopted to observe the appearances of subsurface damage induced during indentation under different loading conditions.

  • Recently, IEC published new standards about the requirements and tests for lightning protection system(LPS) components. If components are used for LPS, they should comply with the IEC standards. This paper, we collected six specimens for the metallic connection components using in domestic, and it tested for withstand lightning current which according to the IEC 62561-1. As a result, only one specimen meet this performance requirement. The specimen is the metallic connection component with four bolts fixed. Therefor, when designing of LPS in domestic, the metallic connection components shall be taken into account for the selection of the withstand lightning current. In addition, we need to develop for LPS components product and the national standards.

  • Frictional characteristics of two different types of automotive friction materials were studied. They were non-asbestos organic and semi-metallic friction materials. The two friction materials were tested using an inertial brake dynamometer to investigate friction stability, rooster tailing phenomena, temperature change during drags and stops. Results show that the level of the friction force is strong functions of time, temperature, and speed regardless of the type of friction materials. In particular, rooster tailing effects are pronounced in the case of semi-metallic friction materials compared to non-asbestos organic friction materials. The phenomena appear strongly dependent on raw materials contained in the friction materials.

  • In this study, the plastic fan with high efficiency and low noise was designed and the capacity of the wind and the wind pressure were analysed and verified by CAE. After designing the metallic mold using the metallic mold design data, and the the metallic mold design was reformed by analysing the process of the material stream and injection filling by CAE. Also the metallic mold cutting data were formed using the metallic mold design data. These cutting data was used to produce the fan electrode by a machining center and then this electrode were used to manufacture the metallic mold by cutting the fan cavity by an electrical spark machine. The purpose of this study is to find out the sub-optimal condition on the productivity and improvement in quality of the plastic fan by integrating a series of this process with a computer.

  • Since non-corrosive Fiber Reinforced Polymer(FRP) tendons have been in increasing use for underground and coastal structures constantly contacted with fresh water or sea water because of their superiority to metallic ones in corrosion-resistance, new non-metallic anchoring system for FRP tendons has been developed and investigated to verify the effectiveness of tendon force, which consist of mainly FRP pipes and Highly Expansive Mortar(HEM). The major factors considered in this experiment were expansive pressures of HEM during its hydration, sleeve lengths and types, and anchoring methods of tendon. New anchoring system were investigated from the pull-out tests. The pull-out procedures of the FRP tendons in the various pipe filled with HEM were analyzed and improved ideas were suggested to develop novel non-metallic anchoring system for FRP tendons The pull-out tests for the FRP tendon and new non-metallic anchoring system were conducted. The results show that non-metallic anchoring system for the FRP tendon has been more stablized due to the gradual expansive pressrure of HEM, as tims goes. Since tile lower stiffness of FRP pipes causes the weakness of anchoring force, it requires the increase of stiffness using a carbon fiber or an increased section area.

  • This paper describes the state of the art for the development of metallic armor materials which are mainly used as armor plates of the combat vehicles. Several important micro-structural features affecting ballistic properties of the metallic armor are discussed. Optimization of the strength and toughness balance of the metallic armor is necessary for the improvement of the ballistic performance resulting from maximizing the resistance to the penetration of the bullet and also to brittle failure of the plates. Understanding and control of the adiabatic shearing phenomenon developed remarkably during high strain rate deformation is needed to prevent brittle failure of the metallic armor materials.
