Heavy Metal (Zn, Cu, Cd, Pb) Distribution and its Form of the Sludges on Keumho River and Her Branches (금호강(琴湖江) 및 그 지류(支流)의 하상(河床) 퇴적오니중(堆積汚泥中) 중금속(重金屬) ( Zn, Cu, Cd, Pb) 분포(分布)와 그 형태(形態))

  • This study was carried out to determine the heavy metal contents in sluges of Keumho river and her branches. The heavy metal contents of sludge are the highest in Sincheon, Kongdancheon and Dalseocheon among the branches. The large part of heavy metal exists in $0{\sim}5cm$ from sludge surface. The sequential extraction with various reagents showed that the residual and organically bound fraction were the most abundant pool. Decomposition of organic matter caused sludge to release heavy metals. On the extraction of sludge with various solution having different pH, it was found that the lower the pH, the more heavy metal was extracted. However, considerable amount of heavy metal was not extracted even with pH 3 solution.

  • Dimensionally stable electrodes are one of the important components in electrochemical water treatment processes. In the manufacturing of the dimensionally stable electrodes, the type of metal catalyst coated on the surface of the metal substrate, the coating and sintering methods substantially influence their performance and durability. In this study, using Ir-Ru-Ta ternary metal coating, various electrodes were prepared depending on the coating method under the same pre-treatment and sintering conditions, and its performance and durability were studied. As a coating method, brush and spray coating were used. As a result, the reduction in the amount of catalyst ink was achieved because more amount of metal could be coated for the electrode using spraying with the same amount of catalyst ink. In addition, the spray_2.0_3.0 electrode prepared by a specific spray coating method shows the phenomenon of cracking and the uniform coating of the ternary metal on the surface of the coating layer, and results in a high electrochemically active specific surface area, and the decomposition performance of 4-chlorophenol was superior to the other electrodes. However, it was found that there was no significant difference in durability depending on the coating method.

Development of Thin, Transparent Oxo-Biodegradable Film with Antibacterial and Freshness Agent (항균, 신선도 기능을 부여한 투명 산화생분해 필름 개발)

  • This article described the development of transparent antimicrobial oxo-biodegradable (AOB) film with the function of enhanced freshness of food by employing oxo-biodegradable masterbatch (MB) and antimicrobial MB together with organic metal salt, organic acid, or unsaturated fatty acid. Antibacterial test of the AOB film with the different contents of the antimicrobial MB resulted in the significant freshness extension of plum. Tensile strength and elongation rate of the AOB films before UV treatment were similar to those of polyethylene films used as control. The reduced mechanical properties of AOB film after UV treatment (340 nm) suggested that the AOB film could be degraded by oxo biodegradation. The developed AOB films can effectively prevent decomposition of food by providing antibacterial function and preserving freshness.

Formation and Role of Acid Sites of Heteropoly Acid Catalysts (헤테로폴리산 촉매의 산점 형성과 역할)

  • The role and the formation of surface and bulk acid sites of heteropoly acids were studied by examining ethanol conversion and MTBE (methyl t-butyl ether) decomposition reaction. In ethanol dehydration diethylether was formed on the surface acid site of 12-tungstophosphoric acid, whereas ethylene was formed in the bulk acid site of the catalyst. It was revealed that water reinforced the bulk acid site of the catalyst, while organic base decreased the bulk acid function of the catalyst. The formation of acid sites of metal salts was due to hydrolysis of crystalline water and/or partial substitution of metal, and with hydrogen treatment, the acid site was reappeared. Also catalyst design as a selective oxidation catalyst was possible by controlling acid function of heteropoly acid catalyst.

Composting Characteristics of Food Waste - Poultry Manure Mixture Inoculated with Effective Microorganisms (유용미생물처리 음식물쓰레기와 계분 혼합물 퇴비화 특성)

  • This study investigated the evaluation of maturity, stability, nutrient and heavy metal from rotating drum composter of food waste amended with poultry manure composting inoculated with effective microorganisms(EM). Composting were performed for the first, drying reactor($15m^3$) 3 hours and the second, composting reactor($30m^3$) 24 hours, and parameters monitored this period included moisture content, NaCl, pH, electrical conductivity(EC), C/N ratio, organic matter(OM), nutrient content and heavy metal. Changes in compost temperature during composting were maintained constantly in the range of $60{\sim}80^{\circ}C$ using firewood boiler(450 MJ/h). We examined physicochemical parameters and heavy metals in order to assess their effectiveness as stability and maturity, nutrient and harmful indicators such as seed germination rate<60%, potassium 1>%, dm and NaCl>1%, dm at the end of the final compost. The finished compost obtained after decomposition phase at the end of the 2nd composter could not be utilized for land improvement or reclamation.

Ozone-Enhanced Remediation of Diesel-Contaminated Soil (II): A Column Study (Ozone에 의한 유류오염토양 복원 연구 (II) : 토양 컬럼상에서의 오존 산화)

  • Column experiments were conducted by using soil columns, to investigate feasibility and efficiency of in-situ ozone enhanced remediation for diesel-contaminated soil. The injection of gaseous ozone into soil column revealed the enhanced decomposition of ozone due to the catalytic reaction between ozone and metal (e.g., Fe, Mn etc.) oxides as evidenced by as much as 25 times shorter half-life of ozone in a sand packed column than in a glass beads packed column. Substantial retardation in the transport of and the consumption of ozone were observed in the diesel contaminated field soil and sand packed columns. After 16 hrs ozonation, 80% of the initial mass of diesel (as diesel range organic) concentration of $800{\pm}50mg/kg$, was removed under the conditions of the flow rate of 50mL/min and $6mg-O_3/min$. Whereas, less than 30% of diesel was removed in the case of air injection. Analysis of the residual TPH(total petroleum hydrocarbon) and selected 8 aliphatics of diesel compounds in the inlet and the outlet of the column confirmed that diesel nonselectively reacted with ozone and then shifted to lower carbon numbered molecules. Water content also was found to be an important parameter in employing ozone to the hydrocarbon-contaminated soil.

Spatial Variability and Contents of Metals in the Surficial Sediments of Youngil Bay, East Coast of Korea (한국 동해안 영일만 표층 퇴적물의 금속 함량과 공간 변화 특성)

  • Bottom sediments from Youngil Bay, East Coast of Korea, were analyzed for grain composition as well as elemental compositions and total organic carbon (TOC) content in order to investigate the spatial variability and content of metal elements. Grain size distribution of the sediments seems to be controlled by anticlockwise current pattern with bottom topography of the study area. Spatial variability of TOC and all elemental contents reflects those of grain size, but an exception was found in the harbor area (Old-Port): their contents are high in the central part of the bay with the muddy sediment and decrease toward the sand-dominated coastal zone. However, contents of Ca, Sr, K are high in the sand-dominated coastal zone and contents of some heavy metals (Cd, Cu, Zn) are high in the Old-Port area and the mouth of Hyeongsan River. The correlation matrix and R-mode factor analyses reveal that four important factors controlling the distribution of metals in the bay are sediment grain size (or quartz dilution effect), the formation of sulfide minerals associated with decomposition of organic matters under anoxic geochemical environment, calcium carbonate (mainly shell fragments) and coarse-grained feldspar mineral. According to the metal content of labile fraction an CER (concentration enrichment ratio) value, high accumulation of some heavy metals in the harbor area seems to result not formed by early diagenetic processes under anoxic environment.

The Effect of Thermal Stability of Cu(I) Precursors on the Deposition in the Metal Organic Chemical Vapor Deposition (MOVCD에 있어서 구리(l)전구체들의 열적 안정성이 증착에 미치는 영향)

  • Metal organic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) of copper using three Cu( I ) precursors. (hfac)Cu (VTMS) (hfac= hexafluoroacetylacetonate, VTMS= vinyltrimethylsilane), (hfac)Cu(VTMOS) (VTMOS= vinyltri¬methoxysilane) and (hfac)Cu(A TMS) (A TMS= allyltrimethylsilane) was studied. The thermal stability and the gase¬ous phase reaction mechanism of Cu( I ) precursors were identified using $^1H$-, $^I3C$-NMR and Fourier transform infra¬red spectroscopy. It was found out that thermal stability of liquid phase (hfac)Cu(VTMS) and (hfac)Cu(VTMOS) were better than that of (hfac)Cu(A TMS) using FT - NMR. From in-situ FT - IR experiments, the disproportion reaction of Cu(hfac). the decomposition reaction of Cu(hfac), and cracking of free hfac ligand were observed. Also the effect of gaseous phase reaction on the deposition rates and film properties was investigated. The minimum temperature that deposition of copper films from (hfac)Cu(A TMS) was as low as 60$^{\circ}$C and such a low deposition temperature compared with those of other Cu( I ) precursors is believed to be related with weaken Cu- A TMS bond.

Plasma-assisted Catalysis for the Abatement of Isopropyl Alcohol over Metal Oxides (금속산화물 촉매상에서 플라즈마를 이용한 IPA 저감)

  • This work investigated the plasma-catalytic decomposition of isopropyl alcohol (IPA) and the behavior of the byproduct compounds over monolith-supported metal oxide catalysts. Iron oxide ($Fe_2O_3$) or copper oxide (CuO) was loaded on a monolithic porous ${\alpha}-Al_2O_3$ support, which was placed inside the coaxial electrodes of plasma reactor. The IPA decomposition efficiency itself hardly depended on the presence and type of metal oxides because the rate of plasma-induced decomposition was so fast, but the behavior of byproduct formation was largely affected by them. The concentrations of the unwanted byproducts, including acetone, formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, methane, carbon monoxide, etc., were in order of $Fe_2O_3/{\alpha}-Al_2O_3$ < $CuO/{\alpha}-Al_2O_3$ < ${\alpha}-Al_2O_3$ from low to high. Under the condition (flow rate: $1L\;min^{-1}$; IPA concentration: 5,000 ppm; $O_2$ content: 10%; discharge power: 47 W), the selectivity towards $CO_2$ was about 40, 80 and 95% for ${\alpha}-Al_2O_3$, $CuO/{\alpha}-Al_2O_3$ and $Fe_2O_3/{\alpha}-Al_2O_3$, respectively, indicating that $Fe_2O_3/{\alpha}-Al_2O_3$ is the most effective for plasma-catalytic oxidation of IPA. Unlike plasma-alone processes in which tar-like products formed from volatile organic compounds are deposited, the present plasma-catalyst hybrid system did not exhibit such a phenomenon, thus retaining the original catalytic activity.

Electrical Properties of $Bi_4Ti_3O_{12}$ Thin Films dependant on Oxygen Partial Pressure during Annealing (열처리 산소 분압에 따른 $Bi_4Ti_3O_{12}$ 박막의 전기적 특성 변화)

  • $Bi_4Ti_3O_{12}$ (BiT) thin films were well developed on the Pt/Ti/$SiO_2/Si$ substrate by a metal organic decomposition (MOD) method. Oxygen was effective on the crystallization of the BiT thin films during a rapid thermal annealing process. The electrical properties of the BiT films dependant on the oxygen partial pressure were investigated. No crystalline phase was observed for the BiT film annealed at $700^{\circ}C$ under oxygen free atmosphere. However, its crystallinity was significantly evolutionned with increasing oxygen partial pressure. In addition, its dielectric and piezoelectric properties were enhanced with increasing oxygen partial pressure to 10 torr. Especially, the BiT film, annealed at $700^{\circ}C$ and 10 torr oxygen pressure, showed good dielectric properties: dielectric constant of 51 and dielectric loss of 0.2 % at 100 kHz. Its leakage current and piezoelectric constant ($d_{33}$) was also considerably improved, being as 0.62 nA/$cm^2$ at 1 V and approximately 51 pm/V, respectively.
