The subject of this study is a zeolite generated as a by-product of recycling LAS (lithium-aluminum-silicate) resources, a kind of glass and ceramic produced by induction. The zeolite by-product is modified into Mg-zeolite using Mg as a cation to absorb Pb, a heavy metal generated from water pollution caused by recent industrial wastewater. An ion-exchange method is used to carry out the modification process, from zeolite byproduct to Mg-zeolite, and simultaneously absorb the Pb in the heavy-metal solution (99.032 mg/L). It is found that the sodium zeolite in the raw material residue can be modified to magnesium zeolite by reacting it with a mixture solution at 1 M concentration for 24 h. As a result, it is found that the residual Pb (0.130 mg/L) in the heavy metal solution is shown to be absorbed by 99.86%, with successful formation of a Mg-modified zeolite.

Although many metals contaminated sediment from coastal area contain both anionic and cationic heavy metals, the current remediation technologies are not effective for stabilize heavy metals of both anionic and cationic elements from contaminated coastal region. the present work investigated the efficiency and mechanism of immobilization of Fe, Zn, Cr, Cu, Pb and Cd metal solutions in modified zeolite based biostimulant ball. Biostimulant ball containing acetate, nitrate and sulphate which are enhance the activity of marine microorganisms and it can act as electron donors and electron acceptors. Modified zeolite and chelating agent is greatly enhance the metal stabilization due to increased immobility of the analysed metals. The XRD, FT-IR and SEM of modified zeolite which cheating agents containing heavy metals were investigated. The results indicated that heavy metals could be effectively immobilized in modified zeolite and chelating agents in BSB added sediment. The immobilization of heavy metals in modified zeolite and chelating agents along with BSB could be due to stabilize of heavy metal cations. Immobilization of heavy metals using BSB with modified zeolite and chelating agent has lower cost effect and enhance the sediment quality.
Objectives: The most commonly detected heavy metals in rocks and soils, including Pb, Cd, Cu, Fe, Mn and As, are representative pollutants discharged from abandoned mines and have been listed as potential sources of contamination in drinking water. This study focused on increasing the removal efficiency of heavy metals from drinking water resources by surface modification of natural adsorbents to reduce potential health risks. Methods: Iron oxide coating and graft polymerization with zeolites and talc was conducted for bipolar surface modification to increase the combining capacity of heavy metals for their removal from water. The removal efficiency of heavy metals was measured before and after the surface modification. Results: The removal efficiency of Pb, Cu, and Cd by surface modified zeolite showed 100, 92, and 61.5%, respectively, increases compared to 64, 64, and 38% for non-modified zeolite. This implies that bipolar surface modified natural adsorbents have a good potential use in heavy metal removal. The more interesting finding is the removal increase for As, which has both cation and anion characteristics showing 27% removal efficiency where as non-modified zeolite showed only 2% removal. Conclusions: Zeolite is one of the most widely used adsorptive materials in water treatment processes and bipolar surface modification of zeolite increases its applicability in the removal of heavy metals, especially As.

Natural zeolite is widely used as sorbents and bio-media materials because it is cheap as well as it has efficient porous structures and large cation exchange. In this study, the effect of metal cations $(Na^+,\;Ca^{2+},\;Mg^{2+},\;Al^{3+})$ adsorbed to natural zeolite on the microorganism attachment was investigated. Metal-modified zeolites (MMZ) were prepared with 0.01 M, 0.02 M and 0.1 M NaCl, $CaCl_2$, $MgCl_2$ and $AlCl_3$ solutions respectively, which concentrations were equivalent to 10%, 20% and 100% of cation exchange capacity (CEC) of natural zeolite. Pseudomonas putida was used as microorganism which was cultivated in Beef Extract Medium at $26^{\circ}C$. The microorganism attachment to MMZ was increased more than natural zeolite. The amount of bacterial adhesion to MMZ and natural zeolite were $Mg^{2+}>natural>Na^+>Al^{3+}>Ca^{2+}$ under 10% of CEC, $Mg^{2+}>Ca^{2+}>Al^{3+}>natural>Na^+$ under 20% of CEC and $Ca^{2+}>Mg^{2+}>natural>Al^{3+}>Na^+$ under 100% of CEC. Especially, Mg-modified zeolite (Mg-MZ) showed the highest amount of bacterial adhesion, which increased the microorganism attachment 60% higher than natural zeolite under 10% of CEC. However, the amount of bacterial adhesion was decreased as the concentration of metal cations modified to zeolite were increased, showing that the increased amounts were 60% under 10% of CEC, 50% under 20% of CEC and 10% under 100% of CEC in Mg-MZ. Additionally, the effect of $Mg^{2+}$ in solution on the bacterial adhesion was investigated in order to compare it with the effect of $Mg^{2+}$ adsorbed to zeolite. The maximum quantity of bacterial adhesion to Mg-MZ was not different from the amount of microorganism attachment to the natural zeolite when $Mg^{2+}$ solution was added.

In this study, $CO_2$ adsorbent was produced for minimizing energy loss due to ventilation within the building. For improved selectivity about low concentration of $CO_2$ in multiple-use facilities, the ball type adsorbent was modified from a commercial zeolite, alumina, alkali metals and activated carbon with mixing LiOH, binder, and $H_2O$. We measured specific surface area, pore characteristic, and crystal structure of the modified adsorbent. Effects of alkalization on the absorptive properties of the adsorbents were investigated. Continuous column tests (2,000 ppm) and batch chamber tests ($4m^3$, 5,000ppm) showed that the modified adsorbent indicated about the selectivity of $CO_2$ more than 9.7% (0.613 mmol/g) compared with ordinary adsorbents and $CO_2$ removal efficiency of 88.8% within l hour, respectively. It was estimated that the modified adsorbent was applicable to indoor environments.
To see the effect of magnesium on adhesion to natural zeolites, a series of batch tests were performed in this research. Mixed bacteria were sampled from the digestion tank at a local sewage treatment plant in Seoul. Magnesium-zeolites were synthesized by mixing natural zeolites with 0.096 M, 0.24 M, and 0.48 M of MgCl2 solution. For comparison, manganese and trivalent ferric zeolites were also prepared. Two grams of 0.2 mm $\sim$ 0.3 mm sized zeolites(non-treated, Mg, Mn and Fe(III) treated zeolites) and 20 mL of water were mixed in a Corex 25 mL tube. Five milliliters of culture solution including bacteria was added to the tube. The tubes were equilibrated in a shaking incubator at mesophilic temperature $(30{\pm}2^{\circ}C)$. The bacterial concentrations were measured with a Microluminometer (New Horizons 3550i) and total organic carbon (TOC) spectrophotometer (Multi NC-3100).
In the skeletal isomerization of 1-pentene over various solid acid catalysts, we have studied catalytic reactivity, selectivity, reaction mechanism and the relation between acid strength of catalysts and catalytic activity. Natural zeolite shows highest activity among the all catalysts and the modified ${\eta}$-alumina with fluorine and sulfuric acid shows higher activity than unmodified ${\eta}$-alumina. The yield of isopentene increases with increasing temperature and increasing contact time. However the cracking products increase at the high temperature and very high contact time. In addition, the activity of natural zeolite exchanged with metal cation decreases and shows good relation with the polarizing power of metal cation. According to the result of ammonia TPD, the acid strength of catalysts has an effect on catalytic activity.

In order to minimize a building energy consumption with ventilation, a development of smart ventilation system is very important. In this study, a dry adsorbent that is main element of smart ventilation system was developed for removing indoor $CO_2$, and evaluate the adsorption performance. Specific surface area, pore characteristic and crystal structure of the modified sorbent was measured to analyze physical properties. From this analysis, it was found that the developed absorbent has a low specific surface area, due to mesopores of substrate was filled with metal contained raw material. Additionally, through analysis of the adsorption properties, the developed adsorbent was shown a adsorption form of mesopore (type IV), which means adsorption amount was rapidly increased at the part of high-pressure. Order to applying for the field, chamber test was performed. Continuous column tests (2,500 ppm) and batch chamber tests ($4m^3$, 5,000 ppm) showed $CO_2$ removal efficiency of 95% and 88% within 1 hour, respectively.

The catalytic conversion of ethanol to aromatic compounds ETA was studied over ZSM-5 heterogeneous catalysts. The effect of reaction temperature, weight hourly space velocity (WHSV), and addition of water and methanol, which are the potential impurities of bio-ethanol, on the catalytic performance was investigated in a fixed bed reactor. Commercial ZSM-5 catalysts having different Si/$Al_2$ ratios of 23 to 280 and modified ZSM-5 catalysts by addition of metal (Zn, La, Cu, and Ga) were used for the activity and stability tests in ETA reaction. The catalysts were characterized with ammonia temperature programmed desorption ($NH_3$-TPD) and nitrogen adsorption-desorption techniques. The results of catalytic performance revealed that the optimal Si/$Al_2$ ratio of ZSM-5 is about 50~80 and the selectivity to aromatic compounds decreases in the order of Zn/La > Zn > La > Cu > Ga for the modified ZSM-5 catalysts. Among these catalysts from the ETA reaction, Zn-La/ZSM-5 showed the best catalytic performance for the ETA reaction. The selectivity to aromatic compounds was 72% initially and 56% after 30 h over the catalysts at reaction temperature of $437^{\circ}C$ and WHSV of $0.8h^{-1}$.
